The construction industry has digitized, but the insurance industry hasn't kept up. Most carriers still price risk based on outdated proxies, ignoring the massive amount of real-time safety and operational data available through tools like Procore and Samsara. This disconnect means safer, tech-forward contractors are subsidizing the premiums of their higher-risk competitors. My guest, Danil Kolesnikov, Founding Engineer at Shepherd, joins me to discuss how they are using technology to fix insurance pricing. We dive into Shepherd's thesis that contractors who use software to manage their jobsites are inherently better risks and should be priced accordingly. Most agencies treat employee benefits as a secondary revenue stream - a product to be sold rather than a risk to be managed. They silo their commercial and benefits teams, leaving the client with a disjointed strategy that fails to address their second-largest line item after payroll. My guest, Kevin Handzlik, Director of Employee Benefits at Ellerbrock-Norris, joins me to flip the script. Coming from an actuarial background at Milliman, Kevin brings a data-driven perspective to the brokerage world. In this episode, we break down why pharmacy costs have skyrocketed to 40% of claims spend, how to apply commercial risk management principles to health plans, and why self-funding is a vehicle, not a product. Losing a big account hurts. Your natural instinct is to get defensive, blame price, and block the other broker on LinkedIn. But what if the secret to your future growth lies in picking up the phone and congratulating the person who just beat you?My guest, Ruth Manka, Executive Director of Intersure, advocates for a radical strategy called "coopetition." In this episode, she explains why the most successful independent agencies are sharing their secrets with rivals rather than guarding them. "You look too young. You can't talk to me about my benefits." That was the feedback Stephanie Handschuh received from a CFO early in her career. It is a bias that plagues the insurance industry, where the average age is pushing 60 and the "old guard" still holds the keys. With a massive wave of retirements on the horizon, the industry is in the middle of a culture clash between the traditional "golf and drinks" crowd and a new generation demanding tech, resources, and rapid growth. My guest, Stephanie Handschuh, Principal at Palmer & Cay, joins me to discuss how to navigate this generational divide. In the insurance industry, we are taught that value equals output. We measure success by how hard we grind, how many calls we make, and how much revenue we personally drive. But there comes a point where your hustle becomes the bottleneck that chokes your agency's growth. If you are doing everything, your team can't do anything. My guest, Tim Leman, CEO of Gibson, learned this the hard way. After years of operating as a high-octane "sales jockey" and player-coach, he realized that to truly scale, he had to stop equating his self-worth with his daily productivity. In this episode, Tim reveals how doing less operational work allowed him to help his company grow more. Most producers claim they want to dominate in 2026, but they are waiting for permission. They wait for the "perfect time" to invest in themselves, or worse, they wait to see if their "boss will pay for it." This mindset is a one-way ticket to mediocrity. If you aren't willing to bet on yourself when the chips are down, why should anyone else?In this special joint episode, I am joined by my own mindset and performance coach, Christina Lecuyer. We strip away the fluff and deliver the hard truths you need to hear before the new year. We discuss why high achievers struggle so much with self-worth, the danger of waiting for a "guaranteed ROI" before taking action, and why confidence isn't a feeling - it's a muscle you build by keeping promises to yourself. Most agency owners treat profit as an afterthought; it's just whatever is left over at the end of the year. "Efficiency is the new equity." In the traditional agency model, growth usually means hiring more people to do more manual work. This linear relationship eats into your margins, complicates your operations, and ultimately caps your agency's valuation. There is a dangerous myth in the industry that building a personal brand means you never have to pick up the phone again. Most employers are wasting money on "cost containment" solutions that nobody uses. The Seattle Seahawks cruised to a 38-14 victory over the Washington Commanders in front of a national audience on Sunday night. The gruesome injury late in the game to Jayden Daniels soured the win and we hope Ernest Jones and Josh Jobe come out of the game ok for our Seahawks. Sam Darnold was on point for Seattle and Jaxon Smith-Njigba continued to dominate, supported by a well-balanced offense orchestrated by Klint Kubiak. The defense stifled Washington's offense and controlled the game from start to finish. Mike Macdonald made the right call on defense with Devon Witherspoon and Josh Jobe getting the start and Nick Emmanwori demonstrating why he should never be on the bench. Without Cooper Kupp on the field, Tory Horton hauled in a couple touchdowns to make his case for future WR2 on the team and Cody White jumped up from the practice squad to add a long touchdown of his own. Most independent agencies lack a compelling story, have no true specialization, and fight to be seen as anything more than a commodity that can be replaced by a cheaper quote. It's a constant struggle to prove your value in a crowded market where trust is everything. But what if your agency's unique story was your greatest asset? My guest, Andor Tobelem from Miami Insurance Brokers, joins me on The Broker's Voice to share the game plan his family agency used to thrive. We get into their incredible journey from Venezuela to Miami, how they built a powerful brand by specializing in the international market, and why their goal is to be on every client's "speed dial" next to their lawyer and doctor. This is a lesson in how to build an agency that is impossible to forget and even harder to replace.▶▶ Sign Up For Your Free Discovery Callhttps://calendly.com/aneary/strategy-sessionCONNECT WITH ANDY NEARY
