The unexpected demise of a witch on All Hallow's Eve prompts her faithful assistant to seek the answer to the question, “Who killed Edith Evilez?” Genre: Horror Excerpt: “Who killed Edith Evilez?” the slightly malnourished young—or perhaps old—woman asked, as she thrust a dusty umbrella at a passing passerby. The asker's name was Trudy Trubbeld. And she had been standing at the corner, asking the question—or rather accusing the question—to various passersby since the death of her mistress and mentor, the aforementioned Edith Evilez, known to her enemies as Edie, and to her friends by no name, as she had no friends to call her by any name. Partial view of an obituary in a newspaper seen from a slight angle. At right is the image of a woman seen from shoulders up, wearing a collared cloak, face in three-quarters profile facing right, one brow and one corner of the mouth raised in a smiled, hair in a low bun at her neck. She holds up her left hand. The top half of a bat seems to be emerging from her palm. Another bat with outstretched wings facing forward appears just above her palm. At left, partial view of a column with text. The top reads “Obituary.” Below it reads “Edith Evilez.” The following text is visible, with ellipses representing parts that are cut off as they are out of frame. “…vilez passed in terror and fright on the night of October 31…is yet to be determined according to one of three profane…she might have followed. Chris Baty joined Figma as their first ever UX writer. Now he is the Head of UX Writing, leading a team at the intersection of content, UX and product design. Chris talks to Kristina about growing the UX writing team at Figma, the business value of UX writing and using data to inform your work and decisions. He also accidentally founded National Novel Writing Month, which you likely know as NaNoWriMo and used to work at Dropbox. All of these experiences are connected and discussed in the latest episode of the Content Strategy Podcast.
Today I talk about every writer's favorite (or most dreaded?) month of the year: National Novel Writing Month! Formed by Chris Baty in 1999, National Novel Writing Month (or NaNoWriMo) "is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that believes in the transformational power of creativity. We provide the structure, community, and encouragement to help people find their voices, achieve creative goals, and build new worlds—on and off the page." You are in for such a treat! Today's show features the music of Zemer Levav and an interview with Shimrit Hanes. She sings beautifully and plays the harp too! Also she just wrote her first book, The Dreamers, the Terra Colony Project Book 1.Shimrit is a songwriter/vocalist/harpist and never intended to become an author. A home school mom of five, her three adult daughters challenged each other to write a book in a month. Desiring to be helpful, she read “No Plot, No Problem” by Chris Baty aloud to her busy middle daughter while she worked. Suddenly an incredible story idea came to mind. Now she had a plot, and a problem. This was her girls thing! MOM!At the end of the month she and one other daughter had their manuscripts finished. After three years of re-writes and fine tuning, Shimrit had a finished book, and outlines for a second and third! Thus “The Terra Colony Project” series was born.Enjoy!!
Last month, I spoke wth Chris Baty from Figma - and we talked about how Figma is helping UX writers enter the design process. This month we continue that conversation with the creator of a copy management system. Jasper Platz is NOT a UX writer or content designer. He says that straight up. However, he quickly discovered a love for content design when building other products. So much so, that he decided UX writers need software of their own to manage the copy process. We talk about that in this episode, but we also talk about: How software can democratize design for UX writers What would product managers look like if they came from design? Why is content design getting so much attention? …and more. This was a great chat, so I hope you enjoy it! —————————- Get 20% off courses at the UX Writers Collective! Just use the code PODCAST20. One of the biggest challenges for UX writers is figuring out how to embed themselves within the design process. Tools like Figma are making that easier. After all, being able to edit a design without any specific software makes it harder not to give writers access. Which means it’s easier for us to do our job. Chris Baty is the Principal UX Writer at Figma, and was previously the head of UX writing at Dropbox. He’s also the founder of NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). He’s a busy guy. He’s also an exceptional champion for all types of writers everywhere. Including content designers. In this episode we talk about him joining Figma, the work he’s doing there to make Figma an exceptional tool for UX writers and content designers, and what it’s like working as a team of one. And so much more. -------------------------- Get 20% off courses at the UX Writers Collective! Just use the code PODCAST20. Since 1999, National Novel Writing Month has exploded in popularity, becoming one of the most creatively productive events in the world every November. Participants buckle down and write a 50,000-word novel in a month, many enjoying the social support from the NaNoWriMo community. Founder Chris Baty joins us to talk about what he's been up to lately, as well as share some thoughts gained from his writing career. We talk about creativity, the power (or not-power, depending on your inclination) of narrative, what we would contribute to a post-apocalyptic team, and the anxiety of wanting to contribute more. Special Guest: Chris Baty.
An interview with NaNoWriMo founder and writing teacher Chris Baty, where we discuss plot, pantsing, not nipping good ideas in the bud, celebrating a hot pile of garbage, and the cult of busyness.
It’s NaNoWriMo prep season—and its 20th anniversary, so this week’s episode celebrates some of the organization’s achievements and milestones, and Brooke and Grant talk about word counts, community, and what keeps them writing. We’re reairing last year’s fabulous interview with NaNoWriMo’s founder, Chris Baty, which is sure to inspire anyone thinking about doing NaNoWriMo to jump in with both feet this November. We hope you will.

I Chris Batys bok "No Plot?
