While it's totally okay to mourn the loss of an event and community you once loved, I'm here to remind you that you do not need NaNoWriMo to write your books and create your best writing life.

In this episode I briefly discuss the bullshit that is war of any kind and I pay brief homage to Matthew Perry (R.I.P.) before reflecting on some favorite passages from Rainer Maria Rilke's Letters to a Young Poet and Mason Currey's Daily Rituals: How Artists Work. In reflecting on what Rilke calls "the happiness of being a beginner," I announce my intention to begin writing a novel this month—and to complete 50,000 words of it—as a first-time participant in NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). And in sharing some gems from Daily Rituals, I discuss some of my own sacred routines, as well as some words of wisdom on discipline and inspiration from Gustave Flaubert, Steve Reich, Samuel Beckett, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, and Bernard Malamud.

National Novel Planning Month (that should be a thing)

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 13, 2023 22:03

I'm a fan of NaNoWriMo—National Novel Writing Month, in which the plan is to write 50,000 words of a novel in November. It's about 1666 words a day, a little more if you take off for Thanksgiving, and it's do-able to get to 50K words. But realistically, most people's result, even if they “win” isn't a draft of a novel. It's usually the rambling draft of the first half or two-thirds at best. Because even if your preferred method of writing is to “pants” (As opposed to plot), getting a novel draft to actually END is perhaps the most difficult part. Even the “murky middle” is easier to draft than those concluding scenes. But NaNoWriMo can—and has, for many people—end in an actual draft that becomes a novel. There's something about the energy of the month and the challenge of imposing those 1666 words on days that are already full of countless things that really works for many of us. The Chicken Sisters began (after years of noodling) as a NaNoWriMo project in 2018, and plenty of other authors also attribute their first drafts to NaNo. I drafted Playing the Witch Card during November, too. The key is to make a plan and stick to it (and not abandon it if it bleeds into December, either). There's nothing I love more than making a plan—so here are my keys to NaNoWriMo success.First: Recognize if this is for you. For me, the combined challenge of confining the draft to a month and the ridiculousness of making it November—hello, Thanksgiving, all the things—actually makes me more determined. Tell me I can't do a thing and watch my dust. I love the sheer ridiculousness and arbitrariness of shoehorning this in. It fits perfectly into the model of things I've achieved in the past. So that's the question: when have you been successful at seeing a project through to the end? Did it look like NaNoWriMo? Or maybe it was similar, with more or less accountability. Did it have a set schedule, did you tell people about it or keep it secret? Do you thrive on self-imposed deadlines or loathe them?If this whole game feels wrong or burdensome to you—but you still want to draft a book—then quit this right now and make your own game, but don't let yourself off the hook. The reason most people never write a book, even if they dream of doing it, is… they never write a book, they just dream of doing it. Go ahead and reject NaNo if it's not for you—but use this moment to find a way of getting it done that is. (You might give Sarina's Episode 352, how to write a novel in 3 months, a listen.)Second: It's not cheating to know what your book is about, it's smart. If sitting down on day one and writing it was a dark and stormy night and going on from there has worked for you, go for it. Most of us need more (and if you've never FINISHED a book by starting off that way, it's safe to guess you need more). In a perfect world, you'd go through the processes we describe during summer 2023's Idea Factory (Episodes 366-373) AND the Blueprint for a book series (Episodes 322-330). If nothing else, you should know these three things: What's the book about (the plot), why are you writing it/why does the world need it (the emotional arc) and where does the story start, peak and then end. Those last can be vague if you prefer—the killer traps her and her dog in a mountain cabin, she manages to escape and returns for revenge—or much more specific if you know who the killer is, or why the couple splits and then reunites. On the one hand I do better with specifics; on the other, those specifics are nearly always wrong. So go figure.Third: You need a plan for what you will write when. Most of us noodle around wildly in the beginning of a book and then get stuck in the middle and hit that 50K without grappling with the end. I try to force myself to stick to a schedule: Week one: the beginning, Week two: the first half of the middle, Week Three, finish the middle and Week four: write to the end. If I'm not there—and I never am, it's impossible—I “prewrite” to the next place I need to be. That means a scrawl of what needs to happen and it's truly gibberish. Because I love y'all, and because I don't think people often imagine writers are exaggerating when we talk about “shitty first drafts”, here's a picture of some pre-writing/outlining from my current project. The bar is LOW. Why why why, indeed.Fourth, let's say I get to 50K and the end of November—yay!—but I didn't write The End. Keep going forward—do not revise until you've ended this draft somehow unless you've successfully finished other novels by revising before you hit the end. It doesn't have to be the right ending. It probably isn't the right ending. But until you write it (or at the very least pre-write it but it has to include the actual things that happen and are felt and said, not just end this somehow), you can pretend everything is going in the right direction when it probably isn't. When we revise before we finishing, we're almost certainly revising the wrong thing. And if you don't “win?” Revise that schedule, re-make the rules, take a mulligan and keep going until you do. Don't abandon that book. Even if it's the worst book ever. We all write the worst books ever, and sometimes we fix them and sometimes we don't, but until you prove to yourself that you can finish a draft, you'll never write a better one. Finally, keep this mantra in mind. Cross-stitch it on a pillow, put it on a post-it, get a tattoo. Good writing comes last. Don't polish that sentence until you know it belongs, don't perfect that scene until it's earned its place in the book. One last word on NaNoWriMo: If you want to do it, if you wish you could do it, if you've always dreamed of doing it… do it. It's 2 hours a day for 30 days. You can find them. You can make it happen. But… you're the only one who can. If the idea of being a book coach niggles at you every time you hear anything about our sponsor, Author Accelerator, I have good news: they've fully revised and updated both the fiction and non-fiction book coach certification program. With more than 100 hours of training, videos, case studies, and worksheets, Author Accelerator's program teaches you the key editorial skills, client-management strategies, and tools needed to help writers reach their goals and to help you start a thriving book coaching business. But maybe you've got no doubt it's a great program—you're just not sure if book coaching right for YOU, or if you can pull it off. Well, Author Accelerator wants it to be the right call for you, too. They're offering a $99 5-day challenge all about getting your business idea out of your head and onto the page—but #AmWriting listeners get it for half off. Head to bookcoaches.com/podcast and enter the code PODCAST at checkout for 50% off. bookcoaches.com/podcastAnd if you're asking yourself—so why charge for the challenge, if they want it to be right for me too? Because if you pony up, you'll really DO it. So if it's time to stop dreaming and start acting, there you go. I've been through this, and I can tell you that this is more than just an online course. You'll take the skills you learn and apply them with real-life clients through three practicums designed to help you practice helping authors go from confusion to clarity with their novel idea. Yes, you work with real writers, yes it's terribly nerve-wracking—but the author I worked with during one of my practicums just got a book deal with that project! This is real, kids—and it works.  This is a public episode. If you would like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit amwriting.substack.com

Though Gene and I met in the theatre world, in this episode we talked about writing, the road through novel-writing and getting his publishing deal, the myth of life balance, gaining confidence in yourself, and finding support from others. Here's what we talked about: How his love for writing stemmed from a group project in school, not from a very young age What it felt like on Day 1 of writing a novel in a month Scheduling time for creativity and putting in the work Letting your art take up space in your mind Finding support and confidence from family, friends, and Facebook groups Redefining how you think about yourself - finding the confidence to say “I am a writer / (Insert your art form)”

If you enjoy this podcast, consider buying me a coffee: https://adamstoner.com/support World leaders have an uncanny knack for making even the most exciting of things thoroughly depressing. Given their rhetoric, you'd be forgiven for thinking that humankind is in no better position at the end of this year than we were last, but that's not the case at all. Here's a reminder of what happened: JANUARY: A riot at the US Capitol, a new President of the United States. I pledge to learn more about space, planets, and the movement of the stars and then quickly forgot about it. 86 countries sign a treaty to ban nuclear weapons. The coronavirus vaccine programme begins in earnest in the UK. FEBRUARY: NASA's Perseverance and Ingenuity rovers land on Mars. I sign up to HEY, the email service from Basecamp, and it totally revolutionises the way I work and communicate. I kit the home out with Philips Hue lightbulbs, Eve cameras, and more smart-tech. MARCH: Ever Given jackknifes itself in the Suez Canal. The remains of a woman butchered at the hands of an off-duty police officer causes outrage across the country, reigniting conversation around violence against women. I get vaccinated; a syringe symbolising the slow-at-first-then-all-at-once return to some kind of normal. With the team behind The Week Junior's Science+Nature magazine, we make Mysteries of Science. APRIL: I play croquet. I take up a bunch more freelance work. The number of confirmed COVID cases passes 150 million; the number of vaccinations surpass 1 billion. Prince Philip dies. MAY : Netherlands orders Shell to align its carbon emissions with the Paris Climate accord. The Eurovision Song contest reunites nations around the continent; it's the first since the UK exited the EU. We come last. I visit Adam Henson's Cotswold Farm Park, SEA LIFE, do an at-home escape room, take on an assault course, do archery, ride a heritage railway, and walk in a forest used as a set for some of the biggest movies in the world. I turn 26 and take some time offline… JUNE, JULY & AUGUST: Restrictions ease. Football fever grips the nation. The number of vaccinated people exceeds three billion. I lay the foundations for a log cabin in my garden and bury a time capsule within its concrete base. Massive floods devastate large regions of Europe. The event is attributed to a slowed jet-stream caused by climate change. The IPCC unequivocally states that climate change is human-caused, widespread, rapid, and intensifying. Two decades of foreign policy fail as the Afghan government surrenders to the Taliban; the US withdraws, ending 20 years of occupation. I come up with an idea that fulfils my new year's resolution to learn more about space and spend the next quarter planning for it. SEPTEMBER: I visit the Science Museum, We The Curious in Bristol, the Royal Observatory Greenwich, all for this project that launches in four days time. I sold my car. El Salvador becomes the first country to accept Bitcoin as an official currency. Inspiration4 is launched by Space X and becomes the first all-civilian spaceflight. I come back online and write a piece for Science+Nature all about the Overview Effect. OCTOBER: I go to the cinema for the first time in two years to see James Bond. I visit a wedding. I stroll through history by walking the Ridgeway, treading a route that's been used by thousands for millennia. NOVEMBER: World leaders gathered in Glasgow for the COP26 climate conference and emit nothing but hot air. I try NaNoWriMo – National Novel Writing Month – and tap out 14,000 words all about humankind and its attempts to project our condition into the universe. DECEMBER: News of a new coronavirus variant seizes headlines once more. World leaders begin to hermit their kingdoms again. Vaccination efforts intensify, case numbers quintuple. I go to two Christmas parties and get a booster jab. The biggest space telescope ever built opens a new era in astronomical exploration. Our collective human story has always been marred with setbacks and challenges but 2021 is proof that the wheels of human progress will restlessly turn. It was also a reminder that it's up to us to steer the vehicle. You'll next hear from me in just a few days time on Tuesday, January 4th 2022 where I'm going to tell you about that exciting project I mentioned. Happy New Year.

The excuses that we tell ourselves tend to be the number one reason we don't move forward toward our goals.   Do these excuses sound familiar? I don't have the money to buy the equipment I don't have the time to spend on that project right now I can't start a business in this economy I don't know how to use X software/hardware/etc. I'm not smart enough/thin enough/fast enough etc. to be able to do the thing that I want, so why try?   Instead of getting caught up in these limiting thoughts, ask yourself instead: What one thing can I do today that will take me one step closer to my goals?   You don't have to wait around until things are "perfect" for you to start working toward your goals. Instead, start where you are and you'll eventually chip away at your goals until you achieve them.   (Transcript Below)   Episode Notes & Links:   Ever wanted to write a book? I'm your host, Jennifer Jelliff-Russell.   Today's show is focused on how to start where you are with your goals, no matter what your goals are.   No matter what your goal is, there is always some small step that you can take toward achieving it. It's very easy to let fear rule us and allow us to make excuses for why we're not moving forward with working toward our goals. Fear can manifest as excuses like: I don't have the money to buy the equipment I don't have the time to spend on that project right now I can't start a business in this economy I don't know how to use X software/hardware/etc I'm not smart enough/thin enough/fast enough etc to be able to do that thing so why try?   The common denominator here is that these thoughts come from a place of fear and negative thinking. It's easier to tell ourselves that we don't have what it takes to complete our goal than it is to make ourselves push toward achieving it.   And don't get me wrong, positive thinking is not going to suddenly drop a million bucks in your lap or fix the economy so you can open a business. However, flipping the script on this way of thinking and saying, "Okay, I don't have x equipment, but what can I do to make still make this happen? Will take you one step closer to your goals than if you do nothing.   Let's talk about starting a podcast as an example. It's true that there is a ton of advice out there on what kind of equipment you should buy and there can be a lot of upfront costs - but only if you decide to incur those costs. If you really want to start a podcast, all you need is a smart phone and occasional access to the internet. In most places, you can access both of those things. There are several free podcast hosts and free podcast recording apps for your phone.   So if your excuse to not get started is that you don't have the "right" equipment, then that's truly what it is, an excuse to not start.   One of my lame excuses for not starting to podcast was that I didn't have a quiet space to record. However, after looking up free ideas for recording spaces, I found tons of people were using their closets! I didn't need to spend big bucks just to buy a mini recording studio. Now, I'm very lucky that my husband and I are in the process of renovating our old farmhouse, and my husband converted one of the closets into a more sound proof room. However, it's just an unfinished closet with extra insultation! I don't' even have a door on it yet. I'm just using a double layer of moving blankets nailed to the doorway. Super fancy, right? But for now, for the most part, it works. I've been able to record 20 episodes so far in this space with fairly good sound quality.   So why am I blathering on about this? Because the excuses we tell ourselves tend to be the number one reason we don't move forward toward our goals.   If you've listened to some of my recent interviews, you'll hear that most of my guests say that they didn't get external pushback on their ideas, but dealt more with internal negative dialogues that they had to reframe in order to get started moving toward their goals.   Rather than coming from a space of "I can't do X," or I don't have the money, or equipment, or the right body or whatever, instead, ask yourself: What is one step I can take today to move forward toward my goal?   If you've been stuck in moving forward, take a moment to write down your end goal. It doesn't matter how big your goals is. It could be this big, hairy, audacious goal of doing something huge, but you still have to start with small steps.   Next, break down your goal into actionable and realistic steps.   For example, one of my personal goals is to write 20 books in the next five years. If I break down this goal down into actionable and realistic chunks, that means I need to write 4 books a year. And that number breaks down to writing 1 book every 3 months.   After writing a few books, I know that I'm usually able to write 1000-1500 words a day within a 1-2 hours span. And that idea to write only 1000 words a day for 3 months means I'd have a good sized first draft of 90,000 words. But saying, I'm going to write 90,000 words in a 3 months is overwhelming. So instead, I'll stick with telling myself that realistic goal of writing 1000 words a day.     Remember that the steps you're going for here need to be realistic. If I said, I'm going to write a book in a weekend! That  would be, for the most part, pretty unrealistic for my personal abilities as a writer. And if I told myself I was going to do that, then I would quickly become overwhelmed by the prospect of having to complete a book in a weekend and would promptly quit writing.   But let's say you have other goals. Maybe you want to visit every country in the world. You have the pretty simple excuse right now that you can't travel anywhere because of the pandemic. And you wouldn't be wrong to say that, right? But instead, if you say to yourself, "I know I can't travel right now, but what can I do to prepare for travel?" You might realize that this is a great time to apply for your passport if you don't already have it. Or a good time to check out free books from the library to start researching the next country you plan to visit when things do open back up.   If you're goal is to open a business but you don't have the funds, what are the things that can do right now to move one step closer to your goal? You could start researching what kind of paperwork you need to complete in order to get your business started. You could start researching government grants that might apply to your business. You could meet virtually with a small business administration or SBA representative and get free coaching on how to build your business plan.   So I want you to ask yourself, what is one thing that you can do today that will take you closer to your end goal?   I'd love to hear what steps you take toward your goals today! You can tweet them to me @GFOPodcast! Or if you're stuck, let me know and maybe I can help you come up with actionable step you can take today!   Alright, join me next week when I interview Yolanda Russell, who is a business and branding coach helping women achieve their entrepreneurial dreams!   That's it for today! KWL Director Mark Lefebvre interviews bestselling author M.L. Buchman (“Matt”) about his non-fiction title specifically targeted for writers and other creators, Estate Planning for Authors: Your Final Letter (and why you need to write it now), a step by step guide on how authors can make sure their legacy remains profitable for decades for their heirs after they are gone. During the interview, Mark and Matt discuss: The approximate 120 titles that Matt has written (about half full length books, the other half short stories) in the past several years The 20 “sweet romance” versions of his romance titles that were re-drafted to remove the adult situations and adult words for a more “wholesome” audience. Described as: “This “Sweet Version” is the exact same story as the original, with no foul language and the bedroom door—even when there isn't one—tastefully closed.” How Kristine Kathryn Rusch, after hearing Matt state that he couldn't write short, commissioned him to write a short story for an anthology she was editing (Fiction River: Christmas Ghosts) – showing the power that a good editor can have a pulling excellence out of a writer The way that the short fiction Matt writes can help funnel readers into the various series novels he has written The free short stories that Matt posts to his website for free on the 15th of every month (called “the Ides of Matt”) and how he uses that to earn money (both the individual short stories available on all retailer websites as well as in compendium editions later on) How Matt's book on estate planning came out of the fact that his wife and child were terrified about how they might manage his IP should something happen to him A will might control who gets what, but it doesn't usually include instructions on how to manager that person's IP (Intellectual property) The examples of estates that were not necessarily handled well as well as examples of estates that were managed spectacularly (how Priscilla Presley turned a near-bankrupt Elvis estate into a multi billion dollar legacy The 14 page letter that explains, “in English” (ie, explaining publishing industry concepts that most non-publishing people don't understand) how to manage the various elements of an estate, particular one that includes assets from an author publishing digitally How this process and the “final letter” works not only for writers, but for anybody who has an IP that can be passed along to heirs After the interview, Mark reiterates the importance of thinking about the future and about the long term and reminds authors the importance of putting a plan in place to ensure that their heirs are equipped to properly manage their IP when they are no longer around. He then reminds writers of the forthcoming NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) and encourages writers to take advantage of such “global” activities where writers can mutually support and cheer one another on to get that first draft of a novel written in a 30 day period.   Links of Interest M.L. Executive Vice President of Publisher Relations and Content at Kobo, Pieter Swinkels introduces a live on stage at Kobo “Kobo in Conversation” interview of Robert Harris about his latest book, Conclave. (As an interesting aside, Pieter was, at one time, Robert's publisher in the Netherlands). Robert is interviewed by Toronto pop culture columnist, film journalist and television personality, Johanna Schneller. In the interview Johanna and Robert discuss: Brexit and how, though the public events surrounding Brexit are possible fodder for a forthcoming Robert Harris novel, he prefers to wait perhaps 10 or 20 years after such an event, because after such time, you can more properly see the patterns a lot more easily when you're not as involved in them The research involved in writing about a papal conclave, the oldest, most secretive election in the world, starting with the request for permission to see the places that aren't normally open to the public The overwhelming majesty of the setting of the Sistine Chapel and the Apostolic Palace The bunker-like setting that the cardinals are sequestered in and the similarities to an Agatha Christie cottage mystery setting The enormous power of the internet when it comes to researching a book such as this one, and how the entire process of gathering that research being hugely sped up The writing routine that Robert Harris employs, starting with research How this particular novel was written between January and July of this past year Harris's daily writing routine of starting sometime around 7 or 8 AM and then finishing at about half past noon, and his belief that one can do only about four hours or so of hard creative work A reference to the Stephen King quote about the “boys in the basement” who are hard at work for a writer when the writer is not sitting at their writing desk Harris's strong belief in deadlines and how the fear and adrenaline helps him produce A look into one of Harris's earliest books, the non-fiction title Selling Hitler, an investigation of the “Hitler Diaries” scandal, which was published in 1986, and how it led to the author's evolution into writing novels   Kobo Writing Life Director Mark Lefebvre then talks about something Robert Harris mentioned in the interview – the concept of the deadline and how he saw that fear and adrenaline as important elements in the creative process for him as a writer. Lefebvre talks about his own experience writing to deadline on his own non-fiction works and then considers the concept of NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) and that 30 day deadline to write a prescribed number of words (50,000). He talks about the critical nature of that imposed “deadline” and how it can help a writer actually sit down and get words written.   LINKS OF INTEREST Robert Harris's website Johanna Schneller on Twitter Robert's books on Kobo
