Gladiators in the Colosseum. Sideshow performers. Reality television. We've always loved to gawk at the misery or majesty of others. But this week, we ask the question: What's it like when the tables are turned and all eyes are on you? Prologue: Ira talks to Joel Gold, a psychologist and author, about a strangely common delusion known as the "Truman Show Delusion," in which patients believe that they are being filmed, 24/7, for a national reality television program. (6 minutes)Act One: Producer Stephanie Foo speaks to Nasubi, a Japanese comedian who, in the 90s, just wanted a little bit of fame. So he was thrilled when he won an opportunity to have his own segment on a Japanese reality TV show. Until he found out the premise: he had to sit in an empty apartment with no food, clothes or contact with the outside world, enter sweepstakes from magazines… and hope that he won enough sustenance to survive. (23 minutes)Act Two: Writer Ariel Sabar tells the story of Roger Barker, a psychologist who believed that humans should be studied outside the lab. So Barker dispatched an army of graduate students to follow the children of Oskaloosa, Kansas, and write down every single thing they did. Sabar wrote a book - a Kindle Single - about Roger Barker, called "The Outsider." (8 1/2 minutes)Act Three: Charlie Brill and Mitzi McCall were a comedy duo back in the mid-1960s, playing clubs around Los Angeles, when their agent called to tell them he'd landed them the gig of a lifetime: They were going to be on The Ed Sullivan Show. The only problem was that their performance was a total fiasco, for a bunch of reasons, including one they never saw coming. David Segal reports. (17 minutes)Transcripts are available at thisamericanlife.org
No one on earth may regard the LORD's righteous one, but the LORD sees and knows. He will not fail to judge the idolatry of His people, particularly among the leaders. Those who follow idolatry only fall into all kinds of perversion and wickedness. Although they look to their idols for help, their idols will not save them. Those who are contrite and lowly in spirit, however, will receive the LORD's comfort and help. This is found in Christ, the Righteous One who has died and risen for us, in order to give us righteousness and restoration and peace. Rev. Sam Beltz, pastor at St. John Lutheran Church in Oskaloosa, IA, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Isaiah 57:1-21. "The Fifth Evangelist” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through Isaiah 40-66. Though Isaiah lived one hundred years beforehand, he writes to the people of God in exile in Babylon to assure them that their God reigns and will rescue them through the work of His servant. These promises are fulfilled in Jesus Christ, whose work Isaiah proclaims vividly seven hundred years beforehand.

These experiences deepened her understanding of the crucial role listening plays in supporting and understanding others, inspiring her to focus on teaching listening as a skill. The episode delves into Deb's CORE method of listening: Calm, Outcome, Relate, and Empathy, providing listeners with a practical framework for improving their listening abilities. Rev. Sam Beltz, pastor at St. John Lutheran Church in Oskaloosa, IA, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Hebrews 8:1-13. The author of Hebrews makes his point plainly: Christ is the high priest who serves as our minister in the holy places, seated at God's right hand. The tabernacle given to Moses was intended to provide an earthly image of this heavenly reality. Because Jesus has obtained this ministry that is much more excellent than what was given to Moses, the old covenant is passing away. This is made plain by the prophet Jeremiah, who spoke ahead of time of the new covenant that the LORD would make with His people. Because Jesus has come, that new covenant is here. “The New Covenant in Christ” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through the book of Hebrews. The book of Hebrews is best understood as a sermon preached to those who have gathered for the Divine Service, exhorting them to continued faithfulness to Jesus. As the Son of God and our Brother, Jesus is both our exalted King and faithful High Priest who is truly present with us so that we might fix our eyes on Him.

Rev. Sam Beltz, pastor at St. John Lutheran Church in Oskaloosa, IA, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Ecclesiastes 2:18-26. Solomon keeps speaking directly concerning the vanity of this life under the sun. When Solomon reflects on the toil of this life, he sees the futility in working hard all life long only to leave everything to someone who may be a fool. This calls for reflection on the part of Christians and a daily return to the purposes God has given us in our work, lest we fall into a great evil. When we approach life in this true fear of God, He gives to us true joy in the midst of our eating and drinking and toiling. “Wisdom for Life Under the Sun” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through the book of Ecclesiastes. Solomon's favorite word in Ecclesiastes paints a bleak picture: “Vanity of vanities! All is vanity!” Apart from God, life is nothing but vapor that does not last and can never be grasped. Yet Solomon does not leave us in despair. He shows us that life does have meaning in the faith and fear of God, from whom all things come to us as a gift.

In July 2000 Floyd Bledsoe was convicted of the murder of his 14-year-old sister-in-law in the small Kansas town of Oskaloosa. His older brother Tom had originally confessed to the killing, but later changed his story, accusing Floyd of the crime. A committed Christian, Floyd spent the next 15 years fighting his conviction, and wrestling with the Bible's teaching to forgive those who have done us wrong. Could he forgive Tom for what he had done? Or his parents, who had sided with one son over the other? Mike Wooldridge speaks to Floyd about his ordeal and about his struggle to do the right thing by his faith. Mike also hears from a volunteer prison chaplain who helped Floyd resolve his dilemma, and from a family friend who stuck by Floyd when others in his own church turned their backs on him. Rev. Sam Beltz, pastor at St. John Lutheran Church in Oskaloosa, IA, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Joshua 14:1-15:12. As Joshua begins to allot the land on the west side of the Jordan River, Caleb receives his inheritance first. The faithful spy lived by faith in the promises of the LORD throughout his eighty-five years. The LORD brought Caleb out of slavery in Egypt, sustained Caleb during the wilderness wandering, and now is bringing Caleb into the Promised Land. Caleb's patience and courage serve as an example to Christians. As the land continues to be allotted, Judah receives their portion as the tribe through whom the promised Messiah will come. “The Promised Land Delivered” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through the book of Joshua. After the death of Moses, the LORD remains with His people to bring them into the Promised Land under Joshua. Throughout the book, the LORD proves that not one of His Word falls unfulfilled. Today, the Church has the same confidence that all of God's promises find their “Yes” in Christ.
