Chris Haney is the CEO of DBBE connect out of Folsom California. This was an incredibly impactful conversation which I didn't want to end. Chris is a disabled veteran with an incredible back story. The thing that I loved about talking to Chris was his attitude about being of service to others looking for obstacles on a daily basis and clearly explaining to others what you don't know. The thing about Chris is it's not about what he does. It's about who he is. Chris gets to better the pond by helping veterans through the Suki Chris Golf Extravaganza, Community Connect and so many other venues. Chris creates impact. Ladies and gentlemen, we solute Mr. Christopher Haney.  DVBE Connect: https://www.dvbeconnect.com/ DVBE Media & Strategy: https://www.dvbemedia.com/ DVBE Pipe & Supply: https://www.dvbepipeandsupply.com/ E-mail: chris@dvbeconnect.com

A Canadian invention that sold for $80,000,000 to Hasbro in 1993. Now it is a worldwide sensation. Come on, you've played it. Dave Young: ... welcome to The Empire Builders Podcast, teaching business owners the not-so-secret techniques that took famous businesses from mom-and-pop to major brands. Stephen Semple is a marketing consultant, story collector, and storyteller. I'm Stephen's sidekick and business partner, Dave Young. Before we get into today's episode, a word from our sponsor, which is... Well, it's us. But we're highlighting ads we've written and produced for our clients, so here's one of those. [AirVantage HVAC Ad] Dave Young: Welcome to The Empire Builders Podcast. I'm Dave Young, and Stephen Semple is alongside, and we're talking about empires, empires that got built up by people that started businesses with an idea and a dream. And Stephen just whispered today's topic into my head, and... Through these headphones, and I'm blown away because the topic is Trivial Pursuit, and he told me that it was a Canadian company that started Trivial Pursuit. Instantly, I have a million questions, like did they just steal U.S. state secrets to make all these questions? Stephen Semple: I wish I had the recording on earlier when you were like, "They're a Canadian company?" Dave Young: You Canadians are smart. Nothing gets past you. Stephen Semple: We've done... God, what number are we at? We're 130 or 140, and you've never reacted with that level of surprise. I was like, "Damn. I wish I had that recorded." Dave Young: I mean, you stop and think about it, it kind of makes sense. Up in the frozen north, you've got to spend a lot of time on board games. Stephen Semple: There you go. Dave Young: When it's too cold to snowboard. Stephen Semple: That's it. That's it. It's never too cold to snowboard, that's the only problem. So it was created by fellow Canadians, yes, Chris Haney and Scott Abbott in 1981, and in 2008, Hasbro bought the full rights for $80 million. As of the most recent data I could get was, 2014, they had broke through 100 million games sold, in 17 languages. 1993, it was named the at the Games Hall of Fame, and basically it's sold over two billion copies worldwide. Dave Young: Amazing. I haven't played it in years. It's still around though, right? I mean, you still... Stephen Semple: Oh, yeah. And there's lots of different versions now. Dave Young: Well, I remember clearly the original version, whatever that was called. It was just called Trivial Pursuit- Stephen Semple: That's right. Yes. Dave Young: That's what it was. Stephen Semple: Yeah. Dave Young: And it had enough questions that you could play it a bunch of times before you really needed to buy an expansion pack kind of thing. Stephen Semple: Yes. Dave Young: That was what was fun. But I think I played it so much with friends, and classmates, workmates eventually, that nobody would play against me on that original version. Stephen Semple: Right, 'cause [inaudible 00:04:08] Dave Young: Then you get in, like, "Oh, the sports version. Nah, I'm no good at that." I might remember the name Gordie Howe. Actually, that explains that it was a Canadian company, 'cause there were a lot of hockey stars in a lot of the question answers. Stephen Semple: Yeah, yeah, absolutely. So the origin goes back to 1970, it took them a while to get it going. So it's the '70s, and the market's dominated by games for kids, there's no adult games out there. And Chris Hanley's a photojournalist, super creative guy. Scott Abbott's a sportswriter- Dave Young: Yeah. Stephen Semple: That might be part of the sports part to it. Dave Young: Probably Gordie Howe's cousin? Stephen Semple: There you go. And so one night they're going to play Scrabble, and it's missing some tiles, and they decide instead to do trivia.

The band Creed has become synonymous with butt rock and ham fisted power balladry, often mentioned in the same breath as Nickelback as one of the worst rock bands of the 2000's, if not ever. While this is a popular position on the internet nowadays, Creed's stratospheric album sales -- 53 million records sold worldwide, and 28 million in the US alone -- hint at a different story, that in fact, a whole lot of people liked them during their brief run from 1997 to 2002.   With nearly 20 years passed since the bands initial dissolution, how does Creed hold up today? Trent and Aaron attempt to answer this question, along with their friend Chris Haney, a regular Fort Worth Music Club participant and avid Creed fan. The conclusion? Creed was a much better band than they get credit for, and filled a melodic hole in an overly dreary post-grunge landscape with more range and songwriting prowess than most of their contemporaries.   Trent Jones Email: trent@marmaladecream.com IG: @marmalade_cream Web: https://www.marmaladecream.com   Aaron LaBoon IG: @aarondlaboon

When we are in distress either temporarily or chronically, we tend to shut down that connection. This break in our body-mind connection can lead to further pain and suffering. Our emotions take over; we dwell on thoughts in an attempt to control them. The resulting distress may be seen in such symptoms as anxiety, depression, addiction etc. However, if we are able to find ways to maintain our body-mind connection even in times of distress, we can open the door to so many more possibilities that in turn can help us whether its acceptance, taking action, seeking help from others, building resources etc. I have experienced success in finding ways to achieve and strengthen this connection using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness, and trauma informed yoga.

In this episode, Geoff sits down with one of his long-time colleagues and friends, Chris Haney, Director of Operations at Star EMS. Chris is a fixture of the first responder community in Oakland County, Michigan with over 37 years of experience in EMS. He enjoyed a full career at the Pontiac Fire Department prior to his time at Star EMS. Throughout his time on the job, Chris has been a part of pretty much every committee, work group and task force you can think of in our county, region and state EMS system. He's here for a down and dirty discussion about what the everyday EMS provider in Michigan should know about the current COVID rules, emergency orders and related protocols. Let’s face it, we’re all going through a LOT of COVID fatigue in the prehospital community. It’s hard to stay current on the “need to know stuff,” that “they” want us to know and do AND keep up with the constant barrage of COVID related calls. Not only is there almost too much information out there, but much of it seems like it contradicts one rule or another which just makes things more confusing. Trust me, we get it. To make it easy, clear and concise, Chris and Geoff thought it would be a good idea to just sit down and talk about the various “things” the boots on the ground should know. We also thought this would be a good chance to give everyone listening some background and context as to how the various medical control authorities, regional networks and the State of Michigan EMS system work in concert to share information back and forth to best serve the specific conditions of our diverse communities. The pandemic has given us an example to show how this giant state-wide system works and this talk may shed a tiny amount of light on a topic that isn’t always so clear. Now, there’s NO WAY you can teach someone how a state EMS system works in a 25-minute podcast and today we’ll just skim the surface. However, by the end of this episode I think you’ll find clarity regarding the general process of how EMS rules, protocols and directives cascade downward and upward in Michigan.
