Cosmic Frequencies: Doug McKechnie's Avant-Garde Moog Performance at Esalen (late 1960s)

Once again, we're diving deep into the Esalen archives to share a fascinating historical recording - this one featuring electronic music pioneer Doug McKechnie. In the late 1960s and early '70s, Doug McKechnie was at the cutting edge of musical innovation, harnessing the revolutionary Moog synthesizer to create mesmerizing sounds. McKechnie was a contemporary of iconic figures like Wendy Carlos, known for the 1968 record "Switched-on Bach," a collection of pieces by Bach that were performed by Carlos on the Moog synthesizer. This album, which won a Grammy for Classical Album of the Year, played a key role in bringing synthesizers to popular music. McKechnie was also tied to the Grateful Dead, contributing to the band's most experimental album, "Aoxomoxoa.” He also played at Altamont, not really a feather in anyone's cap, but it shows the breadth of his growing popularity, and that of the Moog synthesizer. Moogs are characterized by distinctive electronic timbres and pulsating rhythms, as well as hypnotic sequences. They are very much a part of the psychedelia of the late 1960s, fitting right in with the oil light shows, pop art, face paint and neon day glo colors of the time. The Moog's ability to generate evocative psycho-acoustic atmospheres allowed musicians like McKechnie to tap into the exploration of internal landscapes that seemed to naturally occur during psychedelic adventures. The performance you're about to hear was recorded live at Esalen in the late 1960s, preserved for decades on half inch to reel, then dusted off, digitized, and transported to you via the magic of podcasting. So sit back, relax, and let the Moog take you on a trippy auditory journey to a pivotal moment in musical and technological history.

There's widespread uncertainty among developers after a Department of Conservation wildlife permit was deemed unlawful. The High Court in Wellington made the decision over the Transport Agency having permission to inadvertently kill protected wildlife at the Mt Messenger project site. The decision broadly means nothing can be killed unless it has a disease, there is overpopulation - or something similar. Simpson Grierson partner Sally McKechnie says some permits may now be invalid. "It's a case by case basis that will depend on the given permit - but we've got clients, we know we've got colleague firms around town that have clients trying to work exactly that out." With the Trump administration signaling a potential overhaul of financial regulators and whispers of taxing credit unions, the stakes couldn't be higher. Will NCUA get swept into a bank-dominated regulatory merger? Could the credit union tax exemption be on the chopping block? John and Mark dive into the uncertainty, the risks, and what it all means for the credit union movement.Key Discussion Points:  Regulatory Consolidation Buzz: The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg report on merging FDIC and OCC into Treasury—what does this mean for NCUA and credit unions? John shares insights from Capitol Hill, including a revealing chat with Senator Tim Scott's staff.  The Share Insurance Fund Risk: How a consolidated regulator could swallow the credit union-backed fund into a bank-centric FDIC system.  Taxation Tensions: Banks push to tax “mega” credit unions—are we facing a divide-and-conquer strategy? John breaks down the political and economic arguments credit unions must wield.  Exam Burden Reality: NCUA's lighter touch vs. bank regulators—could credit unions face 35% more scrutiny under a merged system?  GAC Game Plan: Why this year's hill visits might be the most critical yet, and how credit union advocates can make their voices heard.  CFPB's Future: A leaner, less aggressive CFPB under Trump—good news or a distraction from bigger threats?Notable Quotes:  “The deck is being reshuffled right now, and I think credit unions should be concerned.” – John McKechnie  “If you eliminate the credit union tax exemption, you're raising taxes on 220,000 of your constituents.” – John McKechnie  “This GAC could be as important as any visit to D.C. the movement has ever had.” – Mark TreichelWhy Listen? With uncertainty as the word of the day, this episode is your insider's guide to the regulatory and legislative battles that could redefine credit unions. Whether you're flying into GAC or tracking policy from afar, Mark and John deliver the wisdom you need to understand the stakes—and what's next.

Iain McKechnie of the Advanced Services Group helps clients develop services-led strategies, improving circularity and outcomes for the businesses and their customers. The market for services, including rental, subscriptions and ‘X-as-a-service' is growing rapidly, both for business to business and business to consumer markets, and services can be a gamechanger for businesses looking to shrink their footprint and adopt circular strategies. It's all part of a shift from a culture of ‘ownership' to ‘usership', with services emerging as a way to provide more convenient, flexible options for customers, avoiding the burden and hassle of ownership. Meanwhile, businesses can benefit from the stability of recurring revenue, predictable income streams and easier financial planning; and improve sustainability by using resources more efficiently. And providing services helps businesses get closer to their customers, with many more opportunities for contact and dialogues, discovering more about what customers value, and how to improve things. The Advanced Services Group are specialists in servitization research and practice, with work that is grounded in the latest academic research, real industry insight, business know-how and experience. The Advanced Services Group helps manufacturing companies and technology innovators on their servitization journey to develop services-led strategies and ultimately transform their business model to compete through advanced services. ASG has worked with over 300 businesses, multinational companies and SMEs to develop their growth strategies through services. Iain tells us a bit about what Advanced Services Group does, and which kind of sectors are starting to move towards service-based models. Iain then explains how companies can transition from selling products, to moving along what ASG calls the 'Services Staircase', developing different kinds of services to create value for their customers. Iain talks about the kind of benefits these companies are seeing – and how this is better for their customers, too. We hear what typically holds companies back from switching to services, and how they might get started. Iain shares a couple of diagrams from the resources on ASG's website – the Transformation Roadmap and the Services Staircase, and I've included links to those in the shownotes.

Our take on what the merger might mean. From CUNA's webpage:CUNA President/CEO Jim Nussle and National Association of Federally-Insured Credit Unions (NAFCU) President/CEO Dan Berger Tuesday notified members of both organizations that the associations have signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) to merge and form into a single, powerful entity to serve credit unions more efficiently and effectively, without redundancies.Nussle will serve as the president/CEO of the new association – America's Credit Unions – should the merger take effect.“By bringing together these two powerful credit union associations we are doubling down on our commitment to ensure the growth and prosperity of all credit unions across the nation and the 137 million Americans they serve,” said Nussle. “We look forward to uniting CUNA and NAFCU in what will be an exciting new chapter ahead, and we're thrilled about the opportunities this will create for our members, employees, and business partners.”The Boards of Directors and Executive Committees of both CUNA and NAFCU voted unanimously in May to merge the two organizations. The merger will be subject to approval from the members of CUNA and NAFCU during a 60-day voting period, which is planned to begin later this month. Berger, who made the decision earlier this year to step aside to fulfill family obligations and pursue other opportunities, will remain at the association until year-end, working to bring the two organizations together and to ensure the merger is a success.“Both CUNA and NAFCU have worked together over the years to achieve victories for the credit union industry, and now the sky is the limit. I believe this is the best path forward for the industry,” said Berger. “A new, singular association under Jim's fervent leadership will be able to harness the combined talent of both organizations to provide outstanding value to our members and ensure every household in America has the best credit union to serve them.”Should members approve of the merger, America's Credit Unions will legally be established no earlier than January 2024, with the intent to be fully operational by early 2025. The new association will initially be governed by a 16-person Board of Directors. This Transition Board will include current board members from both CUNA and NAFCU, including members of each board's executive committee.By combining strengths into a single entity, America's Credit Unions will be a highly influential and effective voice for credit unions in Washington, D.C., and, in partnerships with the Leagues, across all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Guam.Additional details of the intent to merge, including a video message from Nussle and Berger and FAQs, can be found online. The associations will keep credit unions and other stakeholders informed throughout the process through frequent communications.

An ever-present spectre looming over the hearts of general surgeons everywhere! Please join our Emergency General Surgery team for a journal review about Clostridium difficile (C. diff) infection. Dr. Ashlie Nadler and Dr. Jordan Nantais are joined by guest Dr. Marika Sevigny, recent graduate of trauma and acute care surgery at the University of Toronto, as Dr. Graham Skelhorne-Gross prepares for his upcoming fellowship at Harborview. Paper 1: Ahmed et al. Risk factors of surgical mortality in patients with Clostridium difficile colitis. A novel scoring system. Eur J Trauma Emerg Surg. 2022 Jun. - Risk score development study using data from the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) - 525 adult (18-89) patients undergoing colectomy between 2012 and 2016 - Split data into training (80%) and testing (20%) datasets -  Identified mortality risk factors to create and validate a scoring system - Scores ranged from 0 to 37 with the highest score predicting an 83.9% risk of mortality - This scoring system appears relatively straight-forward and methodically sound but the lack of a currently available calculator limits use to some degree Paper 2: McKechnie et al. Total Abdominal Colectomy Versus Diverting Loop Ileostomy and Antegrade Colonic Lavage for Fulminant Clostridioides Colitis: Analysis of the National Inpatient Sample 2016-2019. J Gastrointest Surg. 2023 Apr 20. - Retrospective cohort study of adults (18+) in the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) admitted between Jan 2016 and Dec 2019 for C. difficile colitis, undergoing either a total abdominal colectomy (TAC) or diverting loop ileostomy (DLI) with antegrade vancomycin enemas - Focus on not only mortality and complications but also admission cost and length of stay - 886 TAC and 409 DLI patients were identified - Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed no difference in mortality or overall complications - TAC patients had shorter admissions (mean difference 4.06 days) and lower cost (mean difference $79,715.34) - Study was limited as it considered only the initial admission and is unable to provide data on outcomes and costs beyond this time - Furthermore, there is consideration for disease severity in the analysis, which may impede the ability to compare the two operative approaches Please visit https://behindtheknife.org to access other high-yield surgical education podcasts, videos and more.   If you liked this episode, check out our other Emergency General Surgery episodes here: https://behindtheknife.org/podcast-category/emergency-general-surgery/

The Reds lose today, managing just two hits off Pete Alexander, who contributes two doubles himself to the Phils offense. 1859 - At a racetrack on Long Island, about 1,500 fans become the first ever to pay to see a baseball game.
