In this episode, we explore a critical issue in many divorces with a focus on uncovering hidden money and financial mischief that may arise during this challenging time. My guest is Tracy Coenen, a seasoned fraud investigator and forensic accountant for over 25 years, shares her expertise on navigating the murky waters of financial distrust during divorce. We discuss the nuanced world of hidden assets in divorce. Tracy introduces her innovative Divorce Money Guide, designed to equip individuals with straightforward, actionable steps to identify financial discrepancies without needing an accounting background. She emphasizes that understanding your financial situation is paramount, even if you have limited knowledge of your marital financial issues.Throughout the episode, Tracy highlights practical examples, such as detecting secret bank accounts or unusual withdrawals and making financial conversations approachable for everyone. She also touches on more complex issues like overseas accounts and cryptocurrency, providing insight into how the courts handle these matters. Tracy's advice is straightforward: gather account statements, follow a structured process, and, if necessary, work with your attorney to ensure all assets are accounted for.Tracy's Divorce Money Guide and her numerous online resources empower individuals to take charge of their financial future during divorce. Join us for an enlightening discussion that could make a significant difference in how you navigate the financial challenges of divorce. Tune in, take notes, and prepare yourself with the knowledge you need to protect your assets.About the Guest:Tracy Coenen has been investigating fraud for more than 25 years, but she didn't always want to be a forensic accountant. With a dream of one day being a prison warden, Tracy went to Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI to get a criminology degree. A class on financial crime investigations reminded her how much she loved Encyclopedia Brown books as a kid. She continued her criminology degree, but added accounting and economics courses so she could become a CPA… and here Tracy is, finding money in cases of corporate fraud, high net worth divorce, and other financial shenanigans. For Tracy's complimentary resource: https://divorcemoneyguide.com/plan/To connect with Tracy:Website: https://www.divorcemoneyguide.comAbout the Host: Mardi Winder-Adams is an ICF and BCC Executive and Leadership Coach, Certified Divorce Transition Coach, Certified Divorce Specialist (CDS®) and a Credentialed Distinguished Mediator in Texas. THROUGH THE EYES OF A FORENSIC ACCOUNTANT'S POINT OF VIEWHOST: Beverly Price, Divorce & Empowerment CoachGUEST: Tracy Coenen, Forensic Accountant and Fraud Coach for Divorce SUMMARY:Are you worried about hidden money and concealed assets in your divorce process or are you entangled in a complex financial situation where transparency is crucial? Navigating these circumstances can be overwhelming, leaving you with questions about the whereabouts of undisclosed funds, the total value, and the extent of expenditures. Getting a clear picture of your financial situation and seeking professional help to address these concerns is essential in ensuring a just and equitable settlement and the much-needed peace of mind during this challenging period. In this episode of Her Empowered Divorce, your Host, Beverly Price, talks to Tracy Coenen, Forensic Accountant and Fraud Coach for divorce. Together, they discuss how you can find hidden money in your divorce, how to identify red flags, and the nontechnical ways to gain insight into your financial situation independently. Divorce doesn't have to be a death sentence. With the right support and guidance, you can move through the process with knowledge, skills, and confidence. If you'd like to schedule a complimentary private consultation, reach out to Beverly at: https://beverly-price.as.me/Consultation. Visit https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/her-empowered-divorce/id1635143315 to access the entire archive of Her Empowered Divorce episodes, and while you're there, please subscribe, rate, and review our show! KEY TAKEAWAYS:● Knowledge is power, and you should not sign a settlement without having a clear picture of your financial situation. Even if you are not suspicious and want the divorce over with, you still need all the facts before you sign the settlement agreement because you only have one chance to get the right settlement.● “I just wanted to be done” is a common statement after divorce that often comes from the biggest mistake most women make: letting the emotions hijack them to the point of throwing off their hands, taking whatever is on the table, and settling it.● “Let's save money. We don't need an attorney.” When your spouse tries to rush you into the agreement without an attorney, this is a big red flag. You need someone on your side to help you evaluate things objectively.● There is a whole laundry of red flags, but some of the most common in a divorce situation is a behavior change, which could be a change in schedule and whereabouts, how they are spending money, how they are paying for things, and not giving you access to money and financial information.● If you are thinking about filing a divorce, the first thing you should do is to gather information. Information is your friend; get all the statements for your joint accounts before you say anything to your spouse. NOTABLE QUOTES:● You might trust your spouse and think that those couple of accounts you don't have the statements for aren't a big deal, but why is he not disclosing the statements to you if they weren't a big deal and there is nothing to worry about? (Tracy)● Money and finance are the biggest concerns for people in divorce, and one of the biggest expenditures is going to be for your attorney,...

And I don't want to shame anyone, because I believe women are still victims of the historical narrative of how we've been trained mentally. That we should be nurturers and kind and not talking about money and all that stuff, because somehow that's looked upon as being anti-feminine. I still think there's a lot of that around. I still hear to this day, which is shocking to me, that people say the minute you get married you should comingle everything. I say that's absolutely not what you should do. You should be intentional about what you do comingle, but you should also keep your eye on the ball of what all the marriage includes."“What should we be doing to try to protect ourselves before we get to this sort of bad situation?”“You're right that it really is hard to protect yourself when it comes to that company. You can't control what they're going to do with that company. What I can say is if you have financial information that you have access to and you collect that and keep it, that is one step. But because we can't control what they're doing with the company, I like to say the better way to protect yourself is thinking about, ‘What can I control? I can have a bank account that is in my name only that I can put money in, that no one can ever close without my permission, that no one can ever access that money without my permission. I can take a step like making sure that you have a credit card in your name only. No one else can charge on that card, no one else can close that card. That is going to be your safeguard if you ever do need to leave or get divorced.”

Business Succession from a Forensic Accountant's PerspectiveIn this episode we had the pleasure of interviewing Ryan Stremater, Senior Manager at SDK CPA's and forensic accounting specialist. Ryan's job puts skepticism before all else. He's an expert at digging deep into the details of the story that financials tell about a business and he's been an expert witness in some very interesting litigation situations. What we know after talking with Ryan is that any seller of a business would never want to be faced with the kinds of situations he sees on a regular basis and preventing those from happening and living with regret is simply a matter of hiring the right advisors well before a liquidity event!Post closing disputes happen often, and the most common that Ryan sees are in adjustments to Working Capital and Earn Outs after the closing. Ryan said that Earn Outs are "Today's disagreement over price that becomes tomorrow's litigation over outcome".  In other words, be very careful with Earn Outs, and make sure you have the right team of advisors to structure it properly, should you have to go that route in a sale. Lots more to learn: listen to the episode now and connect with Ryan Stretmater hereThank you to our show sponsors!
