Betrayal and familial loss And much, much more … Episode Notes She's “the most famous spy no one's ever heard of” – Why? Clouded by the tragedy of 9/11, Ana Montes was arrested on suspicion of espionage on September 21, 2001, as the Twin Towers smoldered. She had been spying for Cuba for almost two decades, sending secrets from the heart of American intelligence to Fidel Castro's regime. This week, author and investigative journalist Jim Popkin joins Andrew to discuss Ana Montes' story framed by his new book, Code Name Blue Wren: The True Story of America's Most Dangerous Female Spy—and the Sister She Betrayed. Jim debriefs us on how Ana was recruited, how she gathered and sent secrets, and how she ultimately the net closed in on her. And… The timing couldn't be better to discuss Ana Montes' story. Ana was released from prison two weeks ago on January 6th after serving 21 of her 25-year prison sentence. Why has Ana been released while fellow spies who caused tremendous damage, Robert Hanssen and Aldrich Ames, remain incarcerated? Tune into this week's episode to find out! Quotes of the Week “There's a haunting message that the FBI found on her laptop from the Cubans that said, ‘Thank you so much for revealing [Redacted.] We are waiting for him here with open arms.' So, she revealed the real name of someone who was headed to Cuba, the Cubans were aware of it, and, and they were, ‘waiting for him with open arms.'” – Jim Popkin. When you hear “a Doctor Who story set in the Jurassic period,” the picture you conjure in your head probably looks quite a bit different from Time-Flight. That's not necessarily a strike against it: The finale of Season 19 is notorious for being light on budget, so it's probably a blessing that they didn't even try to show a single allosaurus stomping around the barren plains of prehistoric London. Instead we get the Xeraphin, a telepathic race of morally conflicted humanoids that are almost interesting — at least until the Master uses them as the winner-take-all prize in his technobabble rap battle with the Doctor. Plus: A time-travel mystery! Cringey disguises! Not one, but TWO Concordes! That more than makes up for some absent dinosaurs, doesn't it? Doesn't it? This October, we will be exclusively interviewing spies to hear about their fascinating, and sometimes spooky lives as undercover agents. Our first guest is Christopher Burgess, the 30+ year veteran of the CIA, who was stationed in the Soviet Union during the Cold War at a time when spies on both sides were selling information to their country's enemies. BIO: Christopher Burgess is a 30+ year veteran of the Central Intelligence Agency and the recipient of the agency's Distinguished Career Intelligence Medal. He has appeared on CNN, News Nation, BBC, I24, China News, Bloomberg, CBS, NBC, and ABC proving his perspective on global security issues. He has also lectured and presented before government, academic, and business organizations around the world for the past 15 years. He is the Horatio Alger of the CIA. His first job was punching paper. He went on to be a Station Chief. He worked for every directorate. He lived in several continents. He was in the Soviet Union for six years. He was caught up in the molehunt for Robert Hanssen. He survived to tell his tale. Christopher is genial, hearty and now lives in the other Washington (the rainy state on the West Coast, not the rainy town in Northern England) in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, where he writes for our friends at Clearance Jobs. There have been many news reports in the past several months about nation-state espionage, and in particular nation-state cyberthreats and cybersecurity warfare attacks. So, what exactly are nation-state cyberthreats? What countries are the sources of the cyberthreats? What countries are launching cyberattacks? Russia? China? The USA? Others? Who should be defending against these cyberthreats? Government? Corporations? Individual citizens? In what ways have US citizens committed cyberattacks against their own country on behalf of other nation-states? Why is profiling based on an individual's nationality and heritage a very bad idea for defending against nation-state cyberattacks? And in what ways does it actually do much more harm than good, and does not protect against the actual nation-state cyberwarfare practices? Listen in as Christopher Burgess, a 30+-year CIA security expert, nation-state cyberthreats and cyberwarfare expert, writer, speaker and commentator on security issues, answers these questions and many more in an informative discussion with Rebecca. Follow Christopher on Twitter: @burgessct #Cybersecurity, #Privacy, #NationalSecurity, #NationStateThreats #CyberWarFare #NationalSecurity #CyberWarfareAttacks

ClearanceJob author Christopher Burgess provided a three piece series on Russian Spy, Peter Debbins. The timeline of events from 2011-2020 was particularly interesting with his movement around the defense and IC industry after being assessed and groomed by Russia. Burgess also provided insights on the Russian attempt to infiltrate Tesla's Sparks, NV facility with malware. Both stories highlight the need for ongoing OPSEC training and awareness. The biggest risk from the scramble to move to remote work at scale will likely be an increase in data exposed from misconfigured cloud storage buckets, says Christopher Burgess, a writer and speaker on security issues and former senior security adviser to Cisco. “You can choke a horse on the number of AWS storage regimes that have been misconfigured to allow the general public into data. Pick an industry and they’ve been affected by it.” But Burgess sees a silver lining outcome from the current crisis: “I think we’re going to also see a great deal of clever innovation on dumbing down the security infrastructure so that it can actually be understood.”
All 50 US states were targeted by hackers in the 2016 elections. Some claimed a few of the hacks successfully broke into voting systems. The 448-page Mueller Report contains many important points & findings, not only about these hacking activities & related intelligence operations against the USA elections processes and voting machines and systems, but it also points out many cyber security vulnerabilities & threats leaders need to address for voting machines & elections processes. • How long has nation state intelligence activities been occurring? • How many activities been launched through the internet & directly against computing devices and systems? • Are Russian elections hacking/tampering tactics different from USA & other countries' activities? If so, how? • What is the weakest link in voting & elections systems security? Tune in to hear Rebecca discuss these topics and more with Christopher Burgess, a 30+ year veteran of the CIA and information security expert.

Insider threats, whether malicious or accidental in nature, are one of the most pervasive and serious security issues every organization needs to address in order to adequately identify and mitigate the risk they pose to critical systems and data. According to the IBM Security Index (gated), more than 30% of data breaches are attributed to malicious insiders, and over 23% of breaches are due to insider errors. Furthermore, the SANS Insider Threat Survey (PDF) found that 40% or respondents rate malicious insiders as the most damaging threat vector they face, while 36% rate the accidental or negligent insider as most damaging. Alarmingly, fewer than 20% of respondents reported having a formal incident response plan that deals with insider threat. In this episode of the InSecurity Podcast, host Shaun Walsh is joined by special guest Christopher Burgess (@burgessct), an avid security author and former CEO of Prevendra, to discuss the nature of insider threats and what organizations need to do to address them.
