The American Revolution Went Way Outside of America, Pulling in Caribbean Colonies, African Forts, and Chinese Trading Houses

History Unplugged Podcast

The thirteen colonies that became the United States were just half of the British colonies that existed in the 18th century. The empire stretched from New England, south to Georgia and Florida and the islands of the West Indies, east to India, Scotland, and Ireland, and south again to British forts on the West coast of Africa. Because of this, the revolution of 1776 wasn’t isolated to the North American eastern seaboard. It was a world-historical crisis that swept up American Indian nations, Caribbean islands, West African forts, Indian cities, Scottish drawing rooms, German principalities, Cuban harbors, Chinese trading houses, and a fledgling colony in Sierra Leone. The result is a Revolution that was on the one hand a political struggle for the 13 colonies, but it was also a genuinely global catastrophe in which Indigenous nations, enslaved Africans, German soldiers, French philosophes, Caribbean planters, Indian merchants, and Spanish generals all fought for their own competing visions of what "freedom" actually meant. Today’s guest is Sarah Pearsall, author of Freedom Round the Globe. We see how the fight for liberty went far outside the borders of the American colonies. When the British Parliament imposed the Stamp Act in 1765, the protests and violent crowd actions that erupted were not confined to Boston or Virginia, they broke out with equal fury in St. Kitts, Nevis, Antigua, and other Caribbean colonies. But they chose to stay loyal because they feared slave uprisings more than they resented Parliament. The French alliance that saved American independence at Yorktown drove France itself toward bankruptcy and revolution. And there were at least two would-be fourteenth colonies (British Florida and Quebec) courted by Americans but believed their fortunes were better served in other places than the Revolution. The Revolution was not a contained colonial rebellion. It was a world war, and the Treaty of Paris in 1783 settled the claims of dozens of nations, most of whom had nothing to do with the thirteen colonies.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today host Aaron Millar is sharing a bucket list bit of madness — literal adventure insanity he got up to about 15 years ago in the Scottish Highlands. It's called the Glen Nevis River Race, and it involves hurling yourself down two miles of white-water rapids with nothing but a novelty inflatable for company.Picture part extreme white-water adventure, part Monty Python's Navy — competitors arrive bearing giant inflatable swans, killer whales, dinosaurs and, for one unfortunate soon-to-be husband, a blow-up doll. It's one of those rare, acutely British moments when only the preposterousness of your situation matches the bravado required to see it through. And Aaron has never, ever laughed so hard in his life.Highlights include:Hearing what it feels like to stand on the edge of a thundering 40ft waterfall, inflatable lilo in hand, with a crowd screaming at you to jump.Discovering what it feels like to be swept into a churning cauldron of white-water with nothing but an inflatable air mattress to keep you afloat.Finding out about the world's most wonderfully ridiculous outdoor adventures — including World Bog Snorkelling, Gloucestershire Cheese Rolling, and the Frozen Dead Guy Days festival.FIND OUT MOREThe Glen Nevis River Race is an annual summer event held in Glen Nevis, Scotland, raising money for the Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team. In this episode of the Oxford Policy Pod, MPP Student from Saint Lucia in the Caribbean, Rahym R. Augustin-Joseph, sits with Hon. Mark Brantley, Premier of Nevis, and Leader of the Opposition in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, in the Eastern Caribbean. Premier Brantley serves as Premier of Nevis and Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly of Saint Kitts and Nevis. Brantley previously held the post of Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2015 to 2022. Before entering politics, he built a career as an attorney engaged in international litigation. In this episode, we address the known fact, which is that the Caribbean and Small States, are deleteriously affected by global shocks between world powers, not of their making, such as climate change, wars, geopolitical tensions, policy shifts, and a growing rightward trend among states that affects migration, international multilateral assistance and the rules based order that have protected their sovereignty. However, one cannot as said in the Caribbean, ‘lay down and play dead', but instead, the Caribbean must employ a suite of policy and diplomatic measures that can insulate them from these global shocks, while using these windows to transform their societies. This episode addresses some of these measures that Premier Brantley believes can be done, while still focusing on what he has attempted to do in Nevis to transform.

Everyone in wealth management is talking about artificial intelligence, but the more important question is what happens when it stops being just another feature and starts becoming the operating layer for the firm. Not just a notetaker. Not just a chatbot. Something that can actually help advisors scale capacity, reduce operational drag and make the tech stack feel a whole lot less fragmented. In this episode of The WealthStack Podcast, host Shannon Rosic chats with Mark Swan, CEO and co-founder of Nevis, to explore what it really takes for AI to move beyond point solutions and into the core infrastructure of a modern RIA. He unpacks the difference between horizontal AI tools and vertical AI platforms, why voice may become the next major interface in advisor technology, and how firms can start thinking about AI not as a collection of disconnected tools, but as a system for orchestrating work across the front, middle and back office. Key takeaways: Why the real bottleneck in wealth management is advisor capacity, not demand The difference between AI point solutions and a truly unified platform What lessons from digital banking can teach wealth firms about scaling and reducing costs Why voice could become a much more natural way for advisors to interact with their technology  How lowering the cost to serve could make professional financial advice accessible to more clients Resources: Listen to WealthStack on Wealth Management Subscribe and listen to WealthStack on Apple Podcasts Subscribe and listen to WealthStack on Spotify Connect with Shannon Rosic: Shannon Rosic WealthStack website Wealth Management Connect with Mark Swan: LinkedIn: Mark Swan LinkedIn: Nevis Wealth Website: Nevis Wealth About Our Guest: Mark Swan is the CEO and Co-founder of Nevis, an AI platform built specifically for wealth management firms. In this episode, Beth and I reflect on our recent Nevis to St Kitts swim, a brilliant open water adventure that reminded us what it really means to be Battle Ready. We talk about the event itself, the experience of swimming across open water in a stunning setting, and what we learned from it. Then we shift gears into a more personal topic. I share why, after years of resisting it, I've decided to start taking statins. It's not medical advice, but an honest conversation about health, ageing, and the difference between being fit and being truly healthy for the long term. Key Points The Nevis to St Kitts swim experience A 2.5-mile open water swim in warm Caribbean waters, inclusive, well organised, and accessible to a wide range of swimmers. Adventure vs preparation You don't need perfect preparation to take on meaningful challenges, but the experience highlighted where more specific endurance work would help. Battle Ready in action Being consistently fit allowed us to step into an event like this with confidence and enjoy the experience. Fit doesn't equal healthy You can look strong, perform well, and still have underlying health risks that aren't visible on the surface. Why I changed my stance on statins After years of resisting medication, a combination of medical advice, real-life examples, and perspective on long-term risk led me to rethink my position. 3 Takeaways Train for life, not just events Being Battle Ready means you can say yes to opportunities without needing perfect preparation. Don't confuse fitness with health Performance metrics don't tell the full story. What's happening “under the hood” matters just as much. Play the long game Whether it's training, lifestyle, or medical decisions, the goal is to keep doing what you love for decades, not just today. Born in the UK to Nevisian parents, Martin visited the island in 1994 and never left, trading a career in graphic design for a lifelong mission to share Nevis with the world.Martin has steadfastly positioned Nevis as a "luxury barefoot destination" — a deliberate alternative to mass-market Caribbean tourism. There is no cruise port, no traffic lights, no fast-food chains, and strict building height limits. Yet historically, Nevis looms large: it is home to the Bath Hotel (the first hotel in the Caribbean), the region's first Five Diamond resort (Four Seasons, since 1990), and the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton. "The size of the island is just a number," Martin says. "We are larger than life in a real sense."During COVID-19, a production company stumbled onto Nevis after travel restrictions blocked their original destination. Over two years, nine films were shot on the island, employing roughly 150 locals and appearing on Amazon and Netflix — all while the rest of the hospitality world stood still. Appointed Film Commissioner in August 2023, Martin turned that accident into a strategy. The Nevis Film Commission officially launched in June 2025 and has since hosted approximately eight additional productions, with US streaming and TV network partnerships set to release in 2026 and 2027. Her pitch to filmmakers highlights the island's speed — you can reach any location in 10–15 minutes — free access to heritage sites, seamless permitting, and incentives in the form of accommodation and dining credits. On the tourism side, Nevis leans hard into experiential travel. Visitors can cook organic food harvested from the ground with local farmer Ras Iroi, soak in natural thermal hot springs at the historic Bath Hotel, or follow storytelling tours tracing Hamilton's Nevisian roots. The annual Mango Festival — now drawing 4,000+ visitors across four days in July — showcases 44 local mango varieties through 50 participating chefs. The Nevis-to-St. Kitts Cross Channel Swim, ranked among the world's top 100 open water events, targets 750 international swimmers for its March 2026 edition.Martin's vision extends beyond visitor numbers. She serves on the advisory board of the government's Girls Mentorship Program, and the NTA actively partners with the Nevis Historical and Conservation Society to preserve heritage sites — including an ongoing effort to secure UNESCO World Heritage status for the Bath Hotel. Looking ahead, Martin is focused on expanding brand awareness into untapped markets, including the affluent African American demographic, while cautiously embracing AI and vertical filming technology for the Film Commission. "We have to embrace it," she says, "but carefully — so it doesn't hide the authenticity of Nevis.More Travel NewsSupport the showTripCast360 --- It's all about travel, lifestyle and entertainment.Web: TripCast360.com.Twit: https://twitter.com/TripCast360FB: https://www.facebook.com/TripCast360Insta: https://www.instagram.com/tripcast360/

Send us fan responses! Ever feel like the system is built to keep you compliant and broke? We go straight at the root: status, contracts, and how to build a private life the state doesn't control. From the way schools train obedience to the way courts extract value, we unpack how your identity is treated like a business—and how to take the driver's seat with trusts, DBAs, and clear boundaries that protect your assets and time.We map a practical blueprint. Start by formalizing your family trust and placing a holding company in a protective state like Nevada or Wyoming. Use DBAs for children's names, separate roles to avoid commingling, and learn the key signals that shift jurisdiction—like reserving rights and declining to contract in court. Then layer on finance: fund the trust, leverage cash value life insurance for lines of credit, and consider offshore jurisdictions such as Nevis or the Cook Islands for advanced asset protection. This isn't about hiding; it's about lawful structure and tax avoidance the way corporations have done for decades.Along the way, we explore identity, language, and power. Tribal models in Africa, private communities, and even micronations in Nevada highlight how groups claim autonomy with bylaws, culture, and clear leadership. We connect that to modern tools—crypto, mobile money, and private IDs for specific travel contexts—to move fluidly across borders and systems. And we ground it all in mindset: truth as an energy saver, intuition as a compass, and daily rituals that turn intent into action. Freedom is a paperwork skill and a discipline. Tap in to learn how to stop asking for permission and start setting terms. If this expanded your playbook, follow the show, share it with someone who needs a structure upgrade, and drop a review so we know which topic to dig into next.https://donkilam.com FOLLOW THE YELLOW BRICK ROAD - DON KILAMGO GET HIS BOOK ON AMAZON NOW! https://www.amazon.com/Cant-Touch-This-Diplomatic-Immunity/dp/B09X1FXMNQ https://open.spotify.com/track/5QOUWyNahqcWvQ4WQAvwjj?autoplay=trueSupport the showhttps://donkilam.com

Nevis Sun Tours: The Caribbean's Most Awarded Luxury Travel Experience

Tucked between the shimmering waters of the Caribbean Sea, the twin-island federation of St. Kitts and Nevis has long been a well-kept secret among discerning travelers. Just two miles apart, these islands offer an extraordinary blend of volcanic peaks, colonial history, pristine beaches, and an intimacy that larger Caribbean destinations simply cannot replicate. Yet for years, one critical ingredient was missing: a tour operator capable of transforming these raw ingredients into truly unforgettable luxury experiences. Enter Nevis Sun Tours — and its visionary founder, Greg Phillip.Today, Nevis Sun Tours is not just a tour company. It has earned recognition as a luxury travel enablement platform, been named the home of Azamara Cruises' best tour worldwide, and is rapidly emerging as the defining voice of luxury travel in the Eastern Caribbean. This is the story of how it happened. His idea was to launch donkey-guided tours, an authentic, one-of-a-kind experience that would give visitors a different way to explore the island. This early instinct — to find what is genuinely local, overlooked, and underutilized, and transform it into a compelling experience — would become the philosophical backbone of everything Nevis Sun Tours would build. The tour also engages unflinchingly with the history of slavery — a topic too often whitewashed in Caribbean tourism. "The way we handle that is in the most honest way possible that anyone can really connect with," Phillip said. The result is a deeply moving experience: one actor from the original Broadway cast of Hamilton reportedly stepped away from the group mid-tour to have a private emotional moment, not wanting others to see him overcome with feeling. The Alexander Hamilton Island Tour may be Nevis Sun Tours' flagship, but it sits within a rich portfolio of experiences that showcase the island's lesser-known treasures. This fan-favorite experience brings travelers to the farm of Ras Iroy, a local Rastafarian whom Phillip has known since childhood. Guests harvest their own ingredients, then cook traditional Ital cuisine — the plant-based culinary tradition of Rastafarianism, often called the original Caribbean veganism — on open fires in hand-made clay pots. One recent group spontaneously declared a "New York vs. Chicago cook-off," a reminder that authentic experiences invite authentic human connection.Nevis Sun Tours' ambitions extend beyond delivering great tours. In June, the company will host the inaugural Caribbean Luxury Travel Mastermind at the Four Seasons Nevis — an invitation-only event for serious luxury travel advisors. The event centers on Phillip's proprietary "Caribbean Luxury Travel Sales Framework," a methodology designed to help travel professionals more confidently sell and book high-end Caribbean vacations.Nevis Sun Tours' ascent from a startup built on tamed donkeys to an internationally recognized luxury travel enablement platform is a masterclass in purposeful tourism entrepreneurship. Its success is rooted not in marketing spin but in a genuine philosophy: find what is authentically, uniquely local, develop it with rigor and creativity, present it with world-class hospitality, and build trust with the travel professionals who move the world's most discerning travelers.More Caribbean Travel GuidesSupport the showTripCast360 --- It's all about travel, lifestyle and entertainment.Web: TripCast360.com.Twit: https://twitter.com/TripCast360FB: https://www.facebook.com/TripCast360Insta: https://www.instagram.com/tripcast360/

If Bitcoin is the ultimate opt-out, why can a single border guard still ruin your whole plan?Mike Peterson sits down with Alex Recouso to get into dual citizenship, second citizenship, and global mobility from a Bitcoin maxi point of view. Alex explains why 2020 was the moment the lesson clicked. Bitcoin gives you permissionless money, but your body still moves through checkpoints, visas, and policies that can change fast. That is where geopolitical risk stops being background noise and becomes a daily constraint.Alex breaks down Flag Theory in a way that fits how Bitcoiners think, treating your passport, tax residency, companies, and assets like separate flags. You place them in jurisdictions that protect your freedom, lower your dependency, and expand your options. It is the same mindset as self-custody, applied to citizenship and mobility. Then they go deep on citizenship by investment, including what countries ask for, how KYC and source of funds get tricky when your wealth is on-chain, and why some jurisdictions make Bitcoiners jump through extra hoops. If you have ever tried to explain to a bank that your “paystub” is a UTXO history, this part will feel familiar. They close by comparing the El Salvador passport (Freedom Passport) with other second citizenship paths like São Tomé and Príncipe and Saint Kitts and Nevis. The conversation covers cost, speed, scrutiny, embassy biometrics, and what you are buying when you pay more, time, access, or a country that shares your values.Subscribe, share, and comment, and if you have ever been hit with a surprise visa rule at the airport, drop it below so Mike can add it to his collection.-Bitcoin Beach TeamConnect and Learn more about Alex Recouso and Citizen XX:  https://x.com/recousoX: https://x.com/CitizenXYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@recousoYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@citizenxpodcastLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/alexrecousoWebsite: https://recou.so/images/Website: https://citizenx.com/Support and follow Bitcoin Beach:X: https://www.twitter.com/BitcoinBeach IG: https://www.instagram.com/bitcoinbeach_sv TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@livefrombitcoinbeach Web: https://www.bitcoinbeach.com Browse through this quick guide to learn more about the episode:00:00 Intro02:00 Why do Bitcoiners want a second passport for global mobility?08:30 How does citizenship by investment work if your wealth is in Bitcoin?13:05 Why is the US passport getting weaker? She breaks down the difference between the supportive WAG sisterhood and the Potomac Housewives, where you can be bonding one day and on the chopping block the next, plus where she really stands with Gizelle and Wendy today. Before heading off to BravoCon, Dylan is back for another whackadoodle-time journey through this week's Bravo news. First up, he discusses a viral clip from Special Forces: World's Toughest Test, which makes it clear that Gia Giudice didn't fall far from the tree. Then, he locks in for an important RHOSLC recap, because we need to figure out WTF happened on the flight from hell. Are Meredith and Lisa lying about bullying Britani? Could Mary hear all the way from her seat? And most importantly, which movies did Meredith watch on the flight? Much to unpack. Later, he covers RHOP's last day in Nevis, which features another confusing crashout from one of the newbies.
