Colin Lee talks to Martin Lawes about his musicology-oriented approach as a Nordoff-Robbins trained music therapist, and about the newly published Oxford Handbook of Queer and Trans Music Therapy which he edited. The podcast begins and ends with music. To start with, a composition by a music therapist commissioned to begin the handbook. To conclude, an improvisation from a music therapy session where Colin explains his musical decision-making as a therapist. Colin Andrew Lee studied piano at the Nordwestdeutsche Musikakademie and subsequently earned his postgraduate diploma in music therapy from the Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy Centre, London, UK. Colin was awarded the Music Therapy Charity research fellowship completing his doctoral thesis on the analysis of improvisations with people living with HIV/AIDS at London Lighthouse, a center for people facing the challenge of AIDS. He continued his clinical work at Sir Michael Sobell House Hospice, Oxford, UK. After immigrating to North America, Colin taught at Berklee College of Music, Boston, USA, and later at Wilfrid Laurier University, Waterloo, Canada. Following the publication of Music at the Edge: The music therapy experiences of a musician with AIDS (1996, 2016), he subsequently created the theory of aesthetic music therapy that was the subject of Colin's monograph, The Architecture of Aesthetic Music Therapy (2003). Colin recently edited The Oxford Handbook of Queer and Trans Music Therapy (2024), and is currently editing The Oxford Handbook of Improvisation in Music Therapy. His research interests also include the analysis of postminimalist composers and their influence on the study of applied health musicology. References Lee, C. A. Colin Lee from Inspire Realty is attempting to be a catalyst for structural change in the property advising industry through his bespoke approach to creating individual investment portfolios.Colin's management approach as he scales his business has been formed from years of experience and as he says ‘I'm still figuring this out”. As we all are. I thought it was clever and astute how Colin connected his role as visionary to purpose and making sure his team understand the impact their roles have on the client outcome. It requires building trust and an open and honest environment to allow the business to flourish. It's interesting that the last two conversations I've had the business was started as a result of an unexpected event impacting on the individual. In Colin's case it was a redundancy and in Chris Olufeso's in Episode 46 it was a choice to leave a toxic environment, but both Chris and Colin had the idea, I'll say, in reserve, and the event was the catalyst or enabler for them to make the change, and potentially if that situation hadn't presented itself, the businesses would not have been created and therefore their value possibly would not have been uncovered and they would not now be making their impact on the world.I see this happening with business owners where it's not a redundancy but an event that causes them to think differently about their business. And sometimes it's too late to recover from. And like Chris and Colin they never thought it would happen to them. Inspire Realty founder Colin Lee had always dreamed of starting his own business, but it wasn't until fate threw a curveball that he found the courage to take the leap.
Welcome to Episode 88 of our podcast, Courageous Conversations, hosted by Leanne Pilkington. In this episode, our guest is Colin Lee, Founder and CEO of Inspire Realty and a Property Advisor and Buyers agent Colin Lee had always dreamed of starting his own business, but it wasn't until fate threw a curveball that he found the courage to take the leap. In November 2019, he was heading up a major division of a property investment services company in Sydney when he was unexpectedly made redundant due to a business restructure. At the time, his wife was seven months pregnant, Christmas was fast approaching, and Colin was faced with one the biggest decisions he would make in his life. He could scramble to find another job or take the plunge into entrepreneurship, drawing on the skills accumulated in a 13-year property management, sales and property investment career. Faced with uncertainty and doubt, but keenly aware of the ambition burning inside him, Colin notes it was a tough and scary decision to make. Ultimately, he would make it with the assistance of a mentor, starting Inspire Realty in 2020 just before Covid hit. In a Courageous Conversation that's all about getting the right help when you need it, Colin discusses the value of having a mentor who asks the right questions to allow you to come to your own conclusion. It's a story about finding courage when you need it, taking the risks required to fulfil your dream, and finding the strength to go for it when it could be far easier to play it safe. Colin also shares why it's critical to surround yourself with good people when making a major decision, how a mentor was the perfect person to assist, and why he has come to be one since. He also notes often you have laid the foundations for success long before you have the courage to take a life changing leap. “I plucked up a bit of courage and I said, ‘you know what? This is it. I have one life. I might as well live it to my fullest'. I kind of felt like I'd started early. I'd been in business for so many years and I kind of take the analogy of the bamboo tree. It takes five years to grow its roots and then for the next five weeks, it just grows by twenty-five metres.” – Colin Lee Don't forget to subscribe to the podcast via Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify or Google Podcasts.

The Chelsea FanCast looks back, season by season, to 50 Years of Chelsea history from 1970 to the present day.Stamford Chidge is joined by Jonathan Kydd and Clayton Beerman to look back at the 1979-80 season.Chelsea enters the last season of a very turbulent decade, back in Division Two and as the song says, “we won't be here for long”. Well, that was the thinking anyway!England's 1966 World Cup final hat-trick hero, Geoff Hurst is appointed manager with his West Ham side kick Bobby Gould as assistant. When Chelsea hammered Leyton Orient 7-3 it looked like some of Hurst's goalscoring magic was rubbing off on the players. In fact, by the end of December, Chelsea were sitting top of the division and were still top with only one month of the season to go.Bolstered by Clive Walker's goals in a fine season for the winger who was Chelsea's POTY, Chelsea had to beat Oldham in their final match to secure promotion. They did, but sadly, Birmingham and Sunderland both drew which was enough to leave Chelsea agonisingly 1 point off the promotion places. Had Mickey Droy not hit the post in the 1st match of the season v Sunderland, we'd have been promoted.Still, we had the antics of Petar Borota our mad Yugoslavian keeper to keep us entertained and with Colin Lee, Colin Viljoen and Colin Pates debuting in the season, how many teams could lay claim to having three Colin's in the team?To help us celebrate 50 Years of Chelsea we've partnered with 3Retro who have a superb collection of Chelsea retro gear and are offering 10% OFF when you use the 3RETRO10 code and if you order over £50 of merch you get FREE UK delivery. David Duchovny – Gestureland Gestureland is a melancholy, occasionally noisy but ultimately beautiful affair, and another creative triumph for its architect: Musician-actor-author David Duchovny. While fans may know him best for his screen work (The X-Files, Californication), Duchovny has carved out a larger creative role over the years, authoring four books and releasing three albums while earning raves (and a dedicated fanbase) for his live shows. While the feelings on Gestureland are intimate, the music is expansive: It evokes 70s California pop, alternative rock, folk and country. “Nights Are Harder Than Days'' serves as a rollickin' album opener (shades of Neil Young here), while “Holding Patterns” is softer and orchestral. And ballads such as “Pacific Coast Highway,” “Tessera” and “Sea of Tranquility” find the singer in a more plaintive realm. In its own right, it's timeless music. “I wouldn't go about imitating anyone,” says Duchovny. “But for me it's about classic rock, the British Invasion, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Aimee Mann — you fall in love with certain sounds.”Most of the album written during a fraught time in our country, reflected most directly on the early single “Layin' on the Tracks,” an urgent rocker the singer released just before the presidential election. Here, lines like “This civil war we've been fighting in/Since before the flood/Yeah, there's part of us that's always been/At home in the blood” feel damn prophetic. “I'd never written a song like that,” he admits. “Politics is not my style, but I leaned into it this time. But it's also personal at the same time — it's both what I need to change myself and where the country is at. And I do believe the personal is political — there's no ‘theme' to the album but I'm always the same animal riding through the songs.”With his two earlier releases (2015's Hell or High Water and 2017's Every Third Thought) Duchovny earned critical acclaim; Allmusic called his music “eloquent, alt-rock-kissed country-folk in the vein of Wilco and the Wallflowers,” while the Boston Globe praised Duchovny's voice, noting “he sings with a parched resonance and just a hint of rasp. He is rather heartfelt.” Duchovny — a songwriter on record with a healthy sense of humor in real life — nods at the compliments but follows his own modest methodology: “I'll finish a record, then I'll sit and listen, and go, yeah! That's really nice melodic stuff. What else do you want?” Helping achieve all these sounds: Colin Lee, Mitch Stewart and Pat McCusker, three former college friends from the Berklee College of Music and longtime studio musicians who have worked with Duchovny on all of his records. “David is so joyful about making music, and his lyrical approach and his way of looking at songs is like poetry,” says Lee. “He creates stuff that excites us as musicians.” “The more we've all worked together, the more we're all taking risks and tapping into new influences,” adds McCusker, pointing to the unique arrangements on the new track (and album standout) “Tessera.” During the pause before the new album's arrival, Duchovny released a new novel, Truly Like Lightning, now in development at Showtime. But like all good musicians, he's anxious to get back on the road and perform these new songs live. “David has so much energy and charisma, it's easy for him to carry the show,” says his bandmate Stewart. “I always get such a kick playing live,” adds the singer. “We make our show into a whole evening, and take people on a journey. I can't wait to do a version of this album for a tour.”
