In the first podcast Football Ruined My Life has done since the untimely demise of Patrick Barclay, Jon Holmes and Colin Shindler are joined by the Daily Telegraph sports columnist Jim White. Forced to restart the episode because the Producer had failed to press the record button first time round, eventually the panel turn to the “the poisoned chalice”. They consider the story from the sad night of defeat on penalties in Turin to the singularly appropriate day in 2000 when Kevin Keegan resigned the job in the toilets at Wembley Stadium after a 1-0 home defeat by Germany. In between came the nadir of Graham Taylor and the oh-so-nearly efforts of Terry Venables before Glenn Hoddle was defeated by the players' decision to embrace his original tactics but reject his rather strange insistence on utilising the assistance of a faith healer called Eileen Drewery. This month, we revisit the epic last 16 match between England and Argentina from France 98. It was a match layered with history – the ‘Animals' game from 1966, the Hand of God in 1986, not to mention the Falklands War. England, managed by Glenn Hoddle (a veteran of 1986) had already had a campaign full of talking points – Eileen Drewery the faith healer, the axing of Gazza from the final squad, the omission of David Beckham from the Tunisia match, and the belated use of Michael Owen. Led by Hoddle and his boundless self-confidence, the Three Lions faced an Argentina side, managed by Daniel Passarella (the winning captain from 1978). Argentina, with a 100% record and a defence that hadn't conceded a goal yet in the World Cup, were packed with superstars – Batistuta, Veron, Ortega, Zanetti et al. On paper, it was a promising game and it turned out to be an electrifying classic, great goals, great drama, heroic individual performances, an infamous red card followed by an infamous fallout, and, as always with England, a penalty shootout.National anthems by https://nationalanthems.info/ TWITTER/X@MatthewOkot@WorldCupRamble Subscribe to World Cup Rambling on your podcast platform.

In this episode of Talk2TheHand, we take a deep dive into Glenn Hoddle's controversial tenure as England manager—a period marked by tactical innovation, high expectations, and dramatic downfall. Appointed in 1996 after Terry Venables, Hoddle was seen as the man to take England to the next level. But while his reign showed flashes of brilliance, it was ultimately overshadowed by off-field controversies and strained relationships within the squad. Under Hoddle's leadership, England produced some memorable performances, including a dominant display against the Netherlands at Euro '96 qualifiers and an impressive World Cup run in 1998. But Hoddle's reign wasn't just about tactics. We explore the off-pitch issues that defined his tenure—most notably his decision to involve faith healer Eileen Drewery, which baffled players and the media alike. We discuss the tension this created within the squad, the rift with key players like David Beckham, and how his management style—often described as distant and inflexible—alienated parts of the dressing room despite his footballing acumen. The 1998 World Cup in France is central to Hoddle's story. We talk about the infamous World Cup diary and his relationships with key players. We reflect on the controversy that ultimately led to his dismissal: his comments on disability and reincarnation during a newspaper interview. We discuss the fallout, the FA's decision to sack him, and how his managerial legacy remains one of "what ifs." Was Hoddle ahead of his time, or was he his own worst enemy? Tune in as we unpack one of the most fascinating chapters in England's football history. Talk2TheHand is an independent throwback podcast run by husband and wife, Jimmy and Beth. Football's Greatest continues to bring you some of the best moments from the series so far. This episode focusses on the some of our favourite stories we've heard about disagreements and rivalries. Glenn Hoddle reminisces about David Beckham's red card against Argentina at the 1998 World Cup, gives his thoughts on how their relationship was handled in the ‘Beckham' documentary and how he feels about it all now. Matthew Le Tissier recalls his bruising encounters with Arsenal hard man Martin Keown from his 'Top 5 Toughest Opponents' episode, what made Keown so annoying to play against and how it felt scoring against the Gunners in the final game at The Dell. Phil Thompson talks about losing the Liverpool captaincy to Graeme Souness, how he found out about it from his team-mates and what happened when he confronted their legendary manager Bob Paisley. Joleon Lescott explains why many Manchester City players were happy to see Roberto Mancini leave the club in 2013, despite the success they'd enjoyed together including their epic Premier League title win the year before.
As a writer for The Times, Matt Dickinson has been an original and trusted voice on the key sporting events and characters of the last 25 years. He came to prominence as the reporter behind the interview with then England manager Glenn Hoddle in which Hoddle's remarks on reincarnation ultimately led to his sacking. Matt recalls how being involved in such a high-profile story affected him, what it's like to watch sport for a living and picks out the most compelling sporting figure he ever came across. He remembers the drama in the Nou Camp in 1999 when he had to rewrite his story in a matter of minutes and explains how he's come to realise that his obsession with sport is actually less about the action on the pitch and more about a fascination with what makes extraordinary people tick. Which might explain why he's now moving into psychotherapy. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

We're pumped to bring you this heart-stopping instalment of Join the Docs, where our intrepid hosts, the ever-eloquent Professor Jonathan Sackier and the delightfully droll Doctor Nigel Guest, discuss cardiac arrest. With their trademark blend of wit and wisdom, they dissect the causes of this heart-stopping phenomenon and the absolutely crucial role of CPR and defibrillators in ‘staying alive'.Anyone a football fan? Joining them is none other than the football legend Glenn Hoddle, who recounts his own tale of survival. Picture this: one minute, he's fine, the next, he's floored by a cardiac arrest, saved by the swift actions of a quick-thinking bystander with CPR magic in their hands. It's a story so gripping, you'll need to remind yourself to breathe! You can heart-ly believe your eyes! As our hosts expertly navigate the treacherous waters of cardiac troubles, they illuminate the stark differences between the sneak-attack of a cardiac arrest and the slow-burn drama of a heart attack. The Docs also introduce the catchy and life-saving mnemonic "5 H's and 5 T's," which sounds like a dance move but could actually help you save a life. You aorta listen! But what can you do? Professor Sackier and Doctor Guest, in their infinite jest, remind us that laughter might be the best medicine, but regular health check-ups are a close second. But it's not all in vein - The Docs champion the superhero potential in all of us through the power of CPR, turning each listener into a potential heart-throb hero. So, strap in for an episode that's equal parts educational, entertaining, and utterly exhilarating. Remember with Join the Docs, you're in for a heart-racing good time, and who knows? You might just learn to save a life.
In this witty and informative episode of Join The Docs, Professor Jonathan Sackier and Doctor Nigel Guest delve into the world of Achilles tendonitis. They kick off the show by tracing the condition back to its mythological roots: when Achilles was dipped in the River Styx, if his mum had done a better job, The Docs might be out of a job! “I didn't think I was going to play ever again.” The Docs welcome a true sporting legend, Glenn Hoddle, sharing his personal battle with tendonitis. Hoddle, known for his magical touch on the football pitch, discusses how tendonitis affected his career. With his trademark wit, he recounted the days when his tendons were more bothersome than a referee on match day. A Tottenham Hotspur legend, Glenn also played for other clubs including Monaco, then went into management at Swindon, Southampton, Wolves, his beloved Spurs and, some “other” London club and also managed the England national team. Now a TV football pundit, Glenn is delighted to join The Docs to tell his story and help others. The Docs then dissect the tendon itself, a topic that leads Jonathan to challenge Nigel's perspectives on human anatomy. Talk of diagnosis waxes and wanes from fact to a comedy routine with the duo describing various tests and treatment, with the role of cold vodka carefully considered. They segue into treatments, covering how RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) has changed to PEACE & LOVE…..And if that makes no sense, listen to Join the Docs!"But wait, there's more! If you call within the next ten minutes, we'll throw in a free set of crutches!" Surgical options discussion turns into a mock infomercial, with Dr. Guest pretending to sell the idea of surgery as if it were a set of steak knives. Do you really have to warm-up before every bit of exercise? Professor Sackier shares a personal anecdote about the time he mistook a dance-off as a suitable warm-up and ended up doing the "robot" for a week straight due to stiffness. Doctor Guest chimes in with his own tale of using interpretive dance to explain tendonitis to a confused group of medical students. The conversation takes a turn to the role of general health in preventing tendonitis, with Dr. Guest suggesting that eating carrots might not help your tendons, but at least you'll see them better. How did that happen? Sharing personal experiences turns into a comedy of errors as they recount their most memorable tendonitis cases, including the time Dr. Guest diagnosed a case of "guitar hero wrist" and Prof. Sackier treated a "selfie elbow."Ring, ring! The evolution of sports medicine is likened to the evolution of the mobile phone, with The Docs joking that tendon treatments used to be as big and clunky as a 1980s cell phone. The Docs wrap up the episode with tongue-in-cheek advice on tendon care, including a suggestion to avoid activities that involve chasing mythological creatures. —--DISCLAIMER: The views and opinions expressed on Join the Docs are those of Dr. Nigel Guest, Jonathan Sackier and other people on our show. Stamford Chidge & Jonathan Kydd are joined by Clayton Beerman to look back at a great turnaround away to Crystal Palace on Monday night. In part one, we discuss a horrible first half, but was it all down to Silva starting? With Enzo all over the place, Caicedo hapless, Madueke consistently inconsistent and only Gusto showing up, Chelsea found themselves 1-0 down at half-time. Thanks to Palace playing Bob Marley's 'Three Little Birds' while waiting for referee Michael Oliver to come out after the break, Chelsea supporters gave a full throated rendition of it for much of the second half - reminiscent perhaps of Chelsea v Napoli back in 2012. But did this give the players the lift they needed? Conor Gallagher scored two great goals at the beginning and end of the second half and Enzo's goal was the cream on top of the cake in a 3-1 win. A shout out to Petrovic too for some great saves that kept Chelsea in it but perhaps the biggest shout out should go to the away fans, for some great vocal support epitomised by Disasi leaping in to the Chelsea away section and getting mobbed. Shame JK got trampled under foot in the process! In part two we welcome back old friends Ceri Levy and Garry Hayes, from the Blueprint podcast to talk about the forthcoming release of more epsiodes of their superb series on Chelsea, including the full interviewswith Glenn Hoddle, Colin Hutchinson, Roberto Di Matteo, John Terry and Joe Cole. The series is part of a new platform called The Sideline, bringing fans, players and journalists together. Joe and David chat to TV Presenter John Fendley (the artist formely known as Fenners) about all things Soccer AM and all the footballing legends he has met over the years. Joe can't believe that John has a signed shirt from Pele and has also met his hero Glenn Hoddle. Fenners tries to sell them a phone case and a pair of his shoes. David drops in a series of not so quick fire questions for John including which footballer smells the best. John tells them how his wife got a sniff of David Beckham who smelt particularily good. They also come up with several new podcast ideas one of which is actually good. John promises to send David and Joe a signed shirt and they toy with the idea of starting a WhatsApp group. This is a long ep because none of them wanted to leave - part 2 is coming out as a Bonus ep on Friday 9th Feb. Joining Michael Dawson and Paul Miles is our legendary former midfielder, Micky Hazard!Hazard, a name etched in the annals of our storied history, embarked on his Spurs journey when he moved to north London from his hometown of Sunderland in his teenage years. Despite bouts of homesickness, he soon settled into his new home and went on to establish himself as a key player with technical prowess at a time when the likes of Glenn Hoddle and Ossie Ardiles were senior players to mentor and hone his ability. From that moment, the midfield maestro's time at the Club was marked by his role in the 1981 FA Cup triumph and then added another layer to his legacy when he played a pivotal part in our 1984 UEFA Cup victory
Ray played 15 years for Arsenal. And he was there for the arrival of the great Arsene Wegner – and he would go on to bring some of the greatest players to ever grace the Premier League - Dennis Bergkamp, Thierry Henry, Patrick Viera to name a few. In the 97-98 campaign, Ray was playing exceptionally well – maybe the best year of his career – and it was only natural that the national team – coached by that Tottenham legend – Glenn Hoddle - would give him a look. Coach Arsene himself lobbied the coach that there is no better winger in all of England. Glenn Hoddle was a believe in: ‘faith healing' – and the team had an appointed faith healer – a woman named Eileen Drewery. As Ray was on trial with the Three Lions, he had pulled his calf. And coach Hoddle sent him to see Miss Eileen for 'treatment'. Eileen sat him in the chair, walked round to his back and began rubbing Ray's scalp. Ray being Ray goes, 'Allright Love, take a little off the the sides and the back, but leave the length on the top' (this is a slight paraphrase, but you get the gyst) Unbeknownst to him, Ray had deeply offended Mr Hoddle with this, and would miss out on playing in the 98 World Cup as a result. But his smile was big as he recalled this story – as was mine – and it was a real joy to hear him tell me so many others – I hope you enjoy them as well - here on the soccerPod #14. Here's another chance to hear my interview with Jody Morris from season one.It was a true pleasure to chat with Jody, a man whose adoration for the beautiful game is matched by his astuteness and articulacy. He possesses a remarkable insight into the role of the pivotal midfielder. Troy and Jermain reflect on the first rollickings they ever got from a manager.Troy talks about how Sean Dyche reacted after Troy failed to listen to his instructions, and how Dyche tested him every single day at training. Jermain discusses how Martin Jol "came for him" at half time of a game, leading Defoe to throw a water bottle. And the pair compare notes on the worst rollickings they've seen in a dressing room, including one done through an interpreter. Plus, they discuss David Beckham and Glenn Hoddle, why Marco Silva is ruthless, and what made Fabio Capello so scary.
A Spurs legend and a man of a footballing dynasty joins us on the podcast this week

"We went into our meeting with Tottenham Hotspur riding high at the top of the table, while our opponents had ensured a miserable start to the campaign and sat in 13th, with Glenn Hoddle dismissed as manager, and director of football David Pleat installed as caretaker. Our Champions League campaign had also finally burst into life thanks to Ashley Cole's 88th-minute diving header to earn a 1-0 win against Dynamo Kyiv and ensure Highbury would be buzzing for the arrival of our neighbours." Harry Maguire is in the headlines once again, though this time he has spoken out about his recent lack of playing time at Manchester United. Despite being linked with a move away to West Ham, the defender has now issued a warning to his club insisting he will not wait forever on the bench. We also debate what the game would look like if Paul Merson and Glenn Hoddle were making the calls inside the VAR room alongside Mike Dean… not pretty. So, should ex-professional football players have a say in how the law is interpreted, or even have a hand in the decisions on the pitch? And finally, a big thanks to everyone in our Telegram group who have given the boys a set of tough questions to go through! "Merson won two league titles and three cups with Arsenal, while playing some visionary football which he produced again for Aston Villa. He won 21 caps for England, played in the 1998 World Cup and, now, at the age of 53, he is a much-loved, or often cruelly mocked, member of Sky Sports' Saturday Soccer panel alongside his close friend Jeff Stelling. Merson said, “People talk about being brave on the football pitch. Being brave and clever for me is getting the ball and putting your head up and trying to open up the game. Glenn Hoddle always said: ‘See the picture'. Some players have all the skill in the world, but they can't see that picture. I could. I'm not saying it happened all the time. I had some shocking games. But I was so much better in football than life.” Original Piece by Donald McRae: Paul Merson: ‘Gambling is a horrible addiction. Your career passes you by'
As Chelsea started to establish themselves at the top end of English football with a flurry of major honours in the late 1990s, change was awaiting them on the horizon. The Blues had not long fielded the Premier League's first starting XI that featured overseas players only. It was symbolic of English football's transition to becoming more cosmopolitan, but the appointment of Claudio Ranieri in September 2000 saw the Italian take things back to their roots... he wanted to build his Chelsea team around a spine of homegrown talent. Step forward from the Chelsea youth ranks John Terry, a player whose career was at a crossroads. Within one match, Ranieri identified the talent that would lead Chelsea all the way to becoming European champions. And alongside him, another youngster from across London, Frank Lampard. Chelsea's journey on the road to Munich 2012 was just starting. This episode takes you behind the scenes at Stamford Bridge to understand how Ranieri and Colin Hutchinson lay the foundations for Roman Abramovich and Jose Mourinho to build a dynasty. It's a story played out before the threat of financial ruin and one game that changed it all against Liverpool in May 2003. In this episode you will hear from: John Terry, Ken Bates, Claudio Ranieri, Colin Hutchinson, Ruud Gullit, Glenn Hoddle, Frank Leboeuf, David Lee, Tore Andre Flo, Jody Morris, Jesper Gronkjaer, Neil Barnett (Spy), Rick Glanvill (Chelsea FC historian) and Alex Leith (Ranieri's translator). Glenn Hoddle has a decision to make. As the England team's new manager, it's time to select his 1998 World Cup squad. Include Gazza, and he'll have to take drastic action to stop him going off the rails. But exclude the star player and the country could well turn against him. Gazza played a blinder in the qualifying matches, but will it be enough to get him to France? If you or someone you know needs mental health support, call Samaritans on 116 123 or email jo@samaritans.orgSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
