Chris sits down with Congressman Jamaal Bowman! serving New York's 16th district since 2021. Bowman was a crisis management teacher in an elementary school in the Bronx, who eventually founded his own public school, the Cornerstone Academy for Social Action, a middle school in Eastchester. For years he maintained a blog on changing school policy and standardized testing, with a focus on being deeply involved in the opt-out movement to encourage families to not take the tests, as well as centering pedagogy on social emotional health and restorative justice.Congressman Bowman's team reached out to Human Restoration Project to talk about the More Teaching, Less Testing Act (linked below). The policy lessens the number of tests given each year in schools, limiting the number of tests all students take and finding other ways to gather data, such as through a smaller but representative sample size. Please note that Human Restoration Project is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and that this interview is not an endorsement of Bowman or his electoral campaign.More Teaching, Less Testing Act: https://bowman.house.gov/_cache/files/8/9/89180377-ee4a-4906-b170-f4ee28d3602e/0D579FD78ABAA89748EA157D3F31CAB1.more-teaching-less-testing-act-bill-summary.pdfA video of this conversation in available on our YouTube channel: https://youtu.be/y9Aw4EsH_yc Hosted on Acast. Across the country, there has been a wave of progressive victories in Democratic primaries over the past few years. In 2018, we saw Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ayanna Pressley, and a number of New York State Senate seats flip from the hands of incumbent Democrats to young, bold progressive voices fighting for a new status quo. This trend has continued in 2020 with Cori Bush, Marie Newman, and many others, including a man from the Bronx, NY. On June 23, Jamaal Bowman unseated a powerful sitting representative: Eliot Engel has been in Congress for 31 years and is the current Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Bowman won the primary by a resounding margin, beating Rep. Engel by nearly 15 percentage points and over 13,000 votes. It was a huge shock for many in the political world: how could an influential incumbent once again vastly underestimate their primary challenger? Bowman's campaign, however, knew that anything was possible with enough hard work and community engagement. A former middle school principal and founder of the Cornerstone Academy for Social Action in the Bronx, Bowman's background is in education. He says that his motivation for running for Congress came mainly from seeing firsthand how poorly those children were treated and how little resources they had available to them in order to live successful lives. There's a direct connection between those horrible outcomes [youth deaths and suicides] and the trauma our kids and families deal with and poverty and bad policy that often comes from Washington. Bowman also speaks about NY's 16th Congressional District, which is the area he will be representing come January 2021. He talks about the vast wealth inequality that exists both in America as a whole but also specifically in his district: the 16th consists of very poor areas in the Bronx but also extremely affluent Westchester suburbs. When it comes to squaring his support of Joe Biden's presidential campaign and his own progressive values and beliefs, Bowman believes it isn't an either-or situation. He fights for things like Medicare for All and a Green New Deal because his constituents voted for him. After Trump has been defeated, Bowman says, then the left can begin working with Biden to further progressive policy. For now, he and his team are focused on helping with the Census count in the Bronx and ousting the GOP incumbent in November.
Today, we are joined by Dr. Jamaal Bowman, who was recently elected as the Democratic candidate for Congress for District 16 in New York and is a former Bronx principal. Join us for a conversation with Dr. Bowman where we discuss how his experience as a principal using restorative justice practices, building community by connecting with students and families, and advocating for better student outcomes where there is space for real world learning, led him to running for Congress and the creation of the New Deal for Education and Reconstruction Agenda. We also talk about how it is the time for people who are really about change to step up and be leaders in this moment of revolution. Visit our Bronx ARTeam Website and connect with us on twitter @Bx_ARTeam! Today's hosts are Kris DeFilippis, Jermaine Dickerson, Adelia Gibson, and Kaitlyn Reilley. Guest Information: Dr. Jamaal Bowman was born and raised in NYC until the age of 16 when he moved to New Jersey with his family. Bowman graduated undergrad with a degree in Sports Management from the University of New Haven but chose to pursue education instead. He earned a Master of Arts degree in counseling from Mercy College and a Doctor of Education in educational leadership from Manhattanville College. He worked first as a crisis management teacher in an elementary school in the South Bronx. In 2009, Bowman founded Cornerstone Academy for Social Action, a high performing Middle School in the Baychester section of the Bronx. During his tenure as a school building leader, Bowman was an advocate against standardized testing, citing their connection to the perpetuation of inequality and ultimately reinforcing a negative relationship with what should be called bad education. After 10 years as principal, Bowman pursued the democratic candidacy and beat out long standing rep for the 16th congressional district, Eliot Engel. Jamaal currently resides in Yonkers with his wife and 3 children. For 20 years Jamaal advocated for the students in the schools he served and will continue to be a champion of children and working families when elected to Congress. What would it be like to have a former Bronx middle school principal in Congress? While education is mainly managed on the state and local level, the federal government has expanded its reach in recent years. Congressional Candidate Jamaal Bowman joins L. Joy for a discussion on how he believes Congress can make further investments in public education and more. Our Guest Jamaal Bowman has been a teacher, guidance counselor, dean, and the founding principal of a Bronx middle school. He was born and raised in New York City. He spent his early years in public housing and later in rent-controlled apartments. He didn’t have much growing up, but his mother provided him all that he needed: love, a stable family, and a sense of community. After seeing the failures in our education system, Jamaal started Cornerstone Academy for Social Action (CASA). Located in the Baychester neighborhood of the Bronx, CASA is an innovative public school with a strong emphasis on student voice, holistic education, cultural awareness, and love. Through his work in education, he has seen firsthand how low-income families are locked out of opportunity by a system that’s rigged for the wealthy and privileged few. Through his work as an advocate and a Principal, he has seen the results of inadequate housing, homelessness, mental health, the racist immigration system, the school to prison pipeline, food deserts, and trauma filled environments.

Several educators were recently sentenced to 7 years in prison on racketeering charges for their involvement in the infamous Atlanta school cheating scandals. According to prosecutors, more than 150 educators fed answers to students and changed answers on standardized tests under pressure to save their jobs and give the impression that the troubled school system was making improvements. Meanwhile, thousands of students across the country are opting out of standardized tests aligned to the controversial standards of Common Core. We examined the cheating scandal and questioned whether standardized tests and Common Core is hurting teachers, students and schools, featuring Jamaal Bowman, educator and school principal of the Cornerstone Academy for Social Action Middle School in the Bronx, NY
