In this episode Anais has the pleasure of interviewing the lovely and talented Texas style and swing fiddle player Katie Glassman. Katie shares a few tunes and stories about how music has touched her life and so many others, especially since the pandemic. She advocates that it's never too late to pick up an instrument! Learn more about her online fiddle school at www.fiddleschool.com Follow Facebook https://www.facebook.com/Katie.Glassmanandsnapshot Instagram: @fiddle_school About Katie Glassman: Katie Glassman is that rare musician who possesses a combination of instrumental virtuosity and powerful musical expression. She is one of the country’s most renowned and decorated Texas-style and swing fiddlers, as well as an accomplished songwriter, singer, and a highly sought after educator. Based in Denver, Colorado, Katie toured and recorded with the renowned trio, The Western Flyers -- 2018 Ameripolitan Awards "Best Western Swing Group" and Western Music Association and the Academy of Western Artists "Western Swing Album of the Year" award for Wild Blue Yonder. Katie Glassman and Snapshot is her hometown swing quartet highlighting her original songs -- they have released two commercial records, Snapshot and Dream A Little Dream. As a vocalist, Katie won "Female Western Swing Vocalist of the Year" by the Academy of Western Artists in 2018. As an educator, Katie is the founder, owner, and primary instructor at the online fiddle academy, Fiddle School.com. Since Fiddle School opened in 2018, her thorough online curriculum has given fiddlers around the world the opportunity to learn, improve, and progress in Texas-style fiddling, Western Swing, and early jazz. Offering over 600 instructional videos and countless webinars on fiddling and improvisation, Katie is also an innovator, creating a modern curriculum for a traditional American art form. This is her fiddle pedagogy in a nutshell. She began teaching students of all ages in 1994, many of whom have gone on to become National and state fiddle champions themselves. The Fiddle School "Fiddle From Home" program has been an incredible outlet for fiddlers of all levels throughout the pandemic. As a fiddler, in 2017, Katie won her 4th National Swing Fiddle Championship in Weiser, Idaho. She also took first in both the Bob Wills and Open divisions at the Bob Wills Festival and Fiddle Contest in Greenville, Texas, and she is the seven-time Colorado state fiddle champion. Other notable victories were in 2013 at Rockygrass in Lyons, Colorado, Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas, as well as her two National Championship titles from 1998 and 2001. Katie holds a bachelor’s in performance with a jazz certificate from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and in 2007 spent a year studying jazz violin at the world-renowned Centre Musique Didier Lockwood in Dammarie-Les-Lys, France. And yet, her true musical education came at the feet of the Texas greats she heard and learned from during her decades of competing and jamming at fiddle contests. Jimmie Don Bates, Dale Morris, Wes Westmoreland, and Joey McKenzie are Katie’s living links to the great tradition of Texas-style fiddling. The familiar smell of jasmine in the Melbourne air usually means AFL finals are around the corner. For the Bulldogs players up north, there might not be that traditional scent, but finals fever is well and truly in their conscious. And what better three gentlemen to chat about the business end an AFL season than Bob Murphy, Marcus Bontempelli and Dale Morris.Bob and Bont catch up for the 22nd episode of The Barkly Street podcast to discuss the build-up to Saturday’s Elimination Final clash with St Kilda, reflect on the career of Tory Dickson and recognise the Dogs’ three All-Australian representatives. They also cover off the fitness of Aaron Naughton and Mitch Wallis, and give their take on the pre-finals bye week.Premiership hero Morris jumps onto the Zoom call from Melbourne to talk about his year so far, which included being unfortunately stood down as a development coach, before recently accepting a role in the Club’s commercial department.‘Moz’ also outlines how he rediscovered his academic skills as a remote learning teacher, found time to sneak in the odd weights session in the home gym, how he misses playing footy, and the difficult process of retiring from the game at the highest level.
Western Bulldogs Premiership defender Dale Morris chats to Sam Edmund.
Dale Morris caught my attention a few years ago on LinkedIn with his headline: "If you’re trying to think outside of the box, you’re still constrained by the box.” I thought for days about that. Although I believe constraints often lead to extraordinary creativity, many of us don’t think in the context of constraints. We don’t know what we don’t know, so we try things others might think were impossible. Our older son and I are perfect examples of that. when we get an idea in our heads, we don’t think about what wouldn’t work. We think about what WILL work. When it comes to the idea of thinking outside of a box, we’re more likely to think: “Wait. Was there a box? Was I supposed to do something with a box? Damn. A box?” Dale is one of those people who doesn’t even consider why something won’t work, he just moves forward with his idea. That’s why he’s so good at what he does, both in art and in IT work. We shared a great discussion about the possibility that certain diagnoses we call mental illness might actually be evolutionary shifts to address our very real over-stimulating environments. We also talked about how some people choose to see a diagnoses in the light of possibility - using that different way of thinking to be really good at certain tasks and jobs. I especially loved the part of our conversation about Dale’s art classes when he was in college. He had a literature professor who required an essay about a work by an American author within a specific time period. Because of his differently-abled mind, he struggled with the essay. She offered to adjust his assignment: Paint your feelings about a work of literature. He selected the protagonist from Steinbeck’s The Chrysanthemums. I won’t spoil the story by sharing it here, just listen. Connect with Dale on LinkedIn to learn more about his extraordinary talent in un-puzzling IT puzzles.

Known for his deeply Southern accent, Brady Dale Morris is a national HIV advocate and public speaker living in Nashville, Tennessee. After receiving an AIDS diagnosis in July 2009, Brady began a downward spiral into drugs, alcohol, and depression that led him down a path that ended in several suicide attempts. While recovering from his last attempt, an acquaintance approached him and told Brady he too had recently been diagnosed and needed help in what steps he should take next. That was Brady’s “light bulb” moment and from that day he has dedicated himself to helping those newly diagnosed with HIV and combating the stigma directly felt by others living with HIV. As an independent advocate, he uses his online reach to promote factual and accurate health information about UequalsU and Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP.) Additionally, Brady works in several large capacities with big organizations including: Tennessee AIDS Advocacy Network (TAAN,) Tennessee Association of People With AIDS (TAPWA,) Community HIV AIDS Partnership (C.H.A.P.,), is a founding member of the National Steering Committee for Prevention Access Campaign’s #UequalsU message, and has served as the Co-Chairman of the Nashville Regional HIV Planning Council for the past two years.
