How Dan's work evolved from painting to sculpture, and what helped her to develop her artistic voice.2. The moment Dan knew it was time to take a leap of faith and pursue an art career full-time.3. Why it's so important to create without judgment and to continue trusting yourself.About Dan -Instagram sensation Dan Lam's tactile, technicolor sculptures use unconventional materials to playfully tread a line between allure and repulsion. Made of painted polyurethane foam and often covered in spikes, her blob-like pieces that appear to melt and drip have brought Lam hordes of social media fans. Lam began experimenting with the possibilities of foam after receiving her MFA from Arizona State University, and she has continued to test its limits by scaling up. While her pieces appear otherworldly, Lam steadily draws inspiration from the everyday, taking cues from nature and the human body.Website: bydanlam.comIG: @sopopomo

Today I am joined once again by the one and only Wolf, Cole DaSilva! On this episode we're going to have another Q&A session with our online coaching students. Our first question comes from Mckenzie and Jeff. Mckenzie tells us, “I feel like I'm doing really good, but then there are these moments where I have feelings of not knowing what I'm doing any more. I almost feel like I'm right back where I was a year ago when I started my business. What do you do when you feel like you're starting all over again from the bottom?” Mckenzie has worked through the 10K Academy over the past year, and now she's started in the Mastermind program. This has given her feelings of being “a small fish in a big pond.” She sees other coaches making advances and progress, and this in turn makes her feel like she isn't performing at the level she should be. My response to Mckenzie, and to all of you, is if you are the smartest person in the room, you are in the wrong room. What I mean by this is once you've reached the top, you've outgrown your environment. It's time to move on to new challenges. You want to scale your online coaching business and keep growing. The ultimate goal is to get to Dan Lam levels of income with over $100,000 a month. You can't get there by staying in the same place. (Listen to episode #516 and learn how to get the right mindset to build your business!) I've Been There. I've Done That. Now Learn with Me. I know all the ins and outs of online fitness coaching. I've made mistakes and I've had successes. But I've never given up. That's how I was able to open my own gym and start an online coaching business that has not only brought me success, but also benefited over 600 other online fitness coaches. I love to share my knowledge. So, when you work with me, you learn with me. I'm ready to help you shed those 9-5 shackles and enjoy the freedom, satisfaction, and yes, money, you'll get from being an online fitness coach. From today's guest, Dan Lam: "If “now me” could tell “18 year old me” he’d be a photography website business owner someday (let alone a business owner at all), “18 year old me” would not have believed “now me” for one second! (“18 year old me” was pretty risk averse…) But, after 10 years in accounting out of college, life threw a curveball and I was given an opportunity to join ProPhoto. Then, another 10 years and curveball later, I had the opportunity to take over as owner of ProPhoto.I don’t think I need to tell anyone that being a small business owner is hard, right? What drives me the most though is that I love helping people out. I love teaching, encouraging and fixing problems. I want to buck the tech support norm (“Can you try restarting your computer for me?”). I want photographers to feel great about their websites and their businesses to succeed. It’s why I got into this and why I’m still doing it today!Aside from running the ProPhoto global empire from my Michigan home office, I am an Enneagram 9 that thoroughly enjoys being a husband to my delightful wife and dad to my amazing kids. I’m into all of the standard active/outdoorsy things…running-check, biking-check, hiking-check. If I’m listening to anything, it is usually a theology podcast or hip-hop. DAN LAM. What a pinch-me-moment it was to have her on the show. SO many interesting topics got touched on in this conversation: how and why beauty is easily dismissed in art, Dan’s thoughts on a recent negative comment and the issue of gatekeeping in the art world, the stigmas she’s protesting (like fun! and psychedelic use!), how she’s dealt with copying, advice for creating strong work and tons more. It was powerful to talk to someone with so much experience who’s holding down very healthy and important perspectives for the whole art community. In fact, I almost titled this episode “Dan Lam is Awesome,” (true story) because that was how I walked away feeling from our chat. I know you all are going to appreciate it as much as I did. WE TALKED ABOUT… Dismissing beautiful work Balance and self care Destigmatizing psychedelics Gatekeeping in the art community Copying vs Influencing Advice for artists BIO Dan Lam’s work straddles the line between numerous dichotomies. By navigating the realm between attraction and repulsion, organic and inanimate, seriousness and playfulness, soft and hard, Lam conjures up her idiosyncratic vision. As a result, the work strikes a deft balance between seemingly disparate concepts, subsequently inspiring a range of emotions and ideas from the viewer. Known for her bold and unique sculptures, she rose to popularity and prominence through social media, particularly Instagram. Her body of work ranges from gallery exhibitions to large scale installations to brand collaborations. She exhibits in the US and internationally. Lam was born in the Philippines while her family was immigrating from Vietnam to the United States. She was raised in Texas where she received her Bachelor in Fine Arts from the University of North Texas in 2010. She received her Masters in Fine Arts in 2014 from Arizona State University. We cover a lot of ground in this week's episode with Fort Works Art's Lauren Childs—gallery owner, artist, mom, and constant supporter of the arts. Her gallery quickly became one of my favorite places in Fort Worth when it opened 2016, first for its unique roster of artists but eventually for its continued dedication to bringing international attention to Texas artists. In Episode 106, we talk about some of my favorite artists from previous Fort Works exhibitions (Dan Lam, Marshall Harris, Kate Simon), as well as a few of my favorite things: art activism, Art Basel, the Burning Man experience, and how we can help one another as we navigate these uncertain times. We also explore the collective nature of the Fort Worth arts scene, the state of art in 2020, and how she's remained busy organizing fundraising efforts for the city's creative community through her nonprofit foundation, Gallery of Dreams.
