Fools Fest is KCSU's annual punk festival, always set to happen around April Fools Day! Every year, KCSU gathers local punk and punk-adjacent bands to play on Colorado State University's campus, creating a unique and exciting event for all to enjoy. KCSU's music directors, Mia Templien and Ria Janapati, had the opportunity to sit down with a few of the bands performing for some in-depth interviews.Slag got their name from an unhoused man repeating the word "slag" as he walked by Clay Childress at The Atrium; after having a conversation with him, Childress decided it was fate. This spacey/shoe gaze/noise rock/indie band consists of twins Clay and Coleman. Childress, Caleb Shaver, and Andrew Jussila. Much of their inspiration comes from the DIY scene, with bands like Duster, Fugazi, and Built To Spill being some of their favorites. Slag's next show will be at the FoCoMX music festival at the Art Lab at 8pm on 4/19.

What is stopping IVF labs from becoming fully automated? Tune in to this week's episode of Inside Reproductive Health, as Griffin Jones sits down with Eva Schenkman and Helena Russell of ARTLAB to breakdown the six main barriers to automating the IVF lab. Listen to Hear About: Why automation isn't happening in certain areas of the IVF lab. Risk and inefficiency of data entry. Lack of trust that comes from business intelligence software. Lack of adoption of the Vienna consensus. Which metrics are meaningful for safety that don't necessarily improve clinical outcomes, but are required to improve safety and productivity. Delivery vs operations- what needs to be prioritized now vs. what should be prioritized for the future
One of the most common experiences in any creative practice is the dreaded inspiration dry spell. Join me on this week's episode of Art Lab to explore the concrete practices you can experiment with to rediscover your creative flow again. In this episode, we'll dig into how you can get curious and figure out what's actually causing problems with your creative inspiration. We'll look at four basic “diagnoses” that can halt creative momentum, and unpack some symptoms to look for in each of them, so that you can pivot faster and find what works for you. Relying on ideas If you feel like you're only able to work when the idea is *just* right, it puts a limit on when and how you can engage in the creative process. By trimming the idea down to the essentials and setting aside concept-heavy work for a while, you can pull inspiration from areas that don't require a knock-out idea to get started.Getting stuck in ‘Ugly Valley' The common advice for getting through the messy middle is to simply get to the other side, but that's definitely easier said than done. Instead, we'll try to narrow the focus, look at creativity through an objective lens, and learn to rely on an internal compass to guide the creative process. Needing a break Give yourself permission to have blocks of non-productive time. When you have space to follow other curiosities and interests, you enrich yourself in new ways that often show up in your creative practice when you're feeling ready to go back to it. The idea itself is ‘bad'Even though it's not as common of a diagnosis as the previous three, the reality is that there are times you might be stuck on the wrong idea. Here we'll learn to recognize the symptoms of this de-inspiration challenge, so that you can recognize it and treat it accordingly.Listen to the episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, or on your favorite podcast platform.Get in TouchSign up for the newsletter: kendyllhillegas.com/newsletter-sign-upWatch video episodes: youtube.com/kendyllhillegasFind me on Instagram: @kendyllhillegas
Instead of judging the ebbs and flows of creativity, we're going to approach it with a sense of compassion and curiosity. We'll explore the common threads between emotion and art, and expand on these themes with concrete practices that you can incorporate into your creative process today. We'll also connect with other creators and even mental health practitioners who are deeply passionate about the topic. In each episode, we'll explore the specific places where creativity and feelings overlap – art block, your inner critic, a fear of failure – all the hang-ups we face as creatives. We'll then experiment with concrete tools and practices to try when facing these challenges. Through testing these tools, and observing how they impact your own creative process, my hope is that you will tap into practices that help you cultivate a satisfying and consistent creative process, one in which you can keep making art, even in the midst of difficult feelings. If you're a beginner who's looking for that push to get started, an artist who wants to pick back up, or an established creator who wants to learn more about what makes you tick, Art Lab is the podcast for you! Sailors' Snug Harbor is a collection of nineteenth-century buildings on the north shore of Staten Island in New York City. It was founded as a retirement home for sailors using funds bequeathed by Captain Robert Richard Randall when he died in 1801. Sailors' Snug Harbor opened in 1833 and expanded over the years to more than 50 buildings. It was said to be the richest charitable institution in the United States with farms, a dairy, a bakery, a chapel, a hospital, a concert hall, recreation areas, and more. Looking west along the fronts of the five northern buildings comprising "Temple Row" at Sailors Snug Harbor, Staten Island, NY. Wikimedia Commons photo by Dmadeo. The sailors' home relocated in the 1970s and the not-for-profit Snug Harbor Cultural Center was formed in 1975 to operate the buildings, and the Staten Island Botanical Gardens managed the gardens. The two organizations merged in 2008 to form Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden. The cultural center includes the Staten Island Botanical Garden, the Staten Island Children's Museum, the Staten Island Museum, the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art, and the Noble Maritime Collection, as well as an Art Lab and Music Hall. Sailors' Snug Harbor today consists of 26 buildings including “Temple Row,” five interlocking Greek Revival buildings. The grounds also include a chapel and a sailors' cemetery. Circa 1930s postcard of Sailors' Snug Harbor Bruce Weir is a descendant of sailors, sea captains, and military veterans with an interest in maritime and military history and genealogy. Most thyroid issues can NOT be prevented so it is important to isolate any issues related to it early and then begin a good support protocol using natural pathways. Hey team, no new interview today as I'm working on episode 100 and the ARTLAB speech needs a lot more time in the editing process than I originally planned so this week's episode is a short solo show. Listen to me gush about Bo Burnham's latest special and Kool A.D's new music. I also incoherently ramble about Baudrillard and social media for a bit. Enjoy.
