I had the absolute pleasure of interviewing Lesa Ashford who recently set the female World Record as the fastest woman to circumnavigate Australia. Lesa set off on March 08 2023, from the Wheel in Brisbane, then connected 19 waypoints around mainland Australia with a total distance exceeding 14,000kms. 92 days, 6 hours and 33 mins later she arrived back in Brisbane, setting the official record as first female. Lesa discusses her motivaions to set off on this challenge, and the obstacles which she had to overcome. Flooding and cyclones which damaged infrastructure and roads threatened to derail her attempt, but with a display of grit and determination, Lesa didn't give up.It was evident that setting an official record not only takes a lot of training and dedication but also the assistance from an amazing support team and we talk about this in detail.Check out the details of the official record Lesa set.You can also read Lesa's account of her record breaking ride in more detail. David Sutherland on VMI's Civil War Legacy for more information visit WWW.ChicagoCWRT.org In June 1920 just after World War I then US Army Colonel George C. Marshall, a VMI graduate, persuaded his mentor, General of the Armies John J. Pershing, a West Point graduate, to visit the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia. VMI's superintendent hosted General Pershing, toured him around the Institute and the VMI cadet corps held a full dress, review parade in Pershing's honor. After the parade General Pershing addressed VMI's cadets and spoke of the role Institute alumni had played in the Civil War and the Great War and he remarked on sharp the cadets had appeared earlier that day at parade. Pershing then added that while he had often heard VMI called the "West Point of the South," having just witnessed the VMI cadets parade that perhaps West Point should be called the "VMI of the North." The Civil War greatly impacted VMI and the Institute's alumni profoundly influenced Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. Evidence of VMI's Civil War legacy is still visible around the post and VMI's Civil War heritage has shaped VMI alumni for generations. West Point came of age during the Mexican-American War. VMI came of age in the American Civil War. During the American Civil War ninety-three percent of VMI's then living alumni served in the war. This presentation will discuss VMI's Civil War legacy and how this legacy affected the Institute and today continues to shape VMI alumni. Dave Sutherland was born in Chicago, Illinois, grew up in Northwest Indiana and is a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute and the Indiana University School of Law - Indianapolis. A three time, past president of the Indianapolis Civil War Round Table, Dave is a life-long student of the Civil War and has traveled to and walked scores of Civil War battlefields. He is also a US Army veteran who served in Korea. He lives in Brownsburg, Indiana, just outside Indianapolis, and has practiced law for 35 years.
John Reen talks to local Writer Emma Pitt about her writing career in film and TV and the release of her award winning film "The Ballard of a Haunted Man." Emma Pitt was born in Oxfordshire and grew up in the Somerset village of Stogumber where her parents still live. From there, she moved to South East London to study for a Communications and Sociology degree at Goldsmiths University and has lived there ever since. Her work mentor once asked her ‘what do you really want to do?' so with that in mind she enrolled on a TV Script Writing Course at City Lit in Central London. She'd done Script Writing as part of her first degree and often thought about being a writer. Jim Hill taught the course. Jim has a lengthy TV career; he created Boon and directed Lovejoy, Casualty and Minder. 5 minutes into that class, Emma knew this was for her. Jim encouraged her to enrol onto the TV Script Writing MA, which he ran, at De Montfort University in Leicester. It was a 2-year part time course so she moved into a part time role in the Regulatory Performance Team at Kings: a job she is still in. She achieved a Distinction in the MA and won the Media Film and Journalism Prize for Best Project. She then secured an agent, Rebecca Watson at Valerie Hoskins Associates and has since been commissioned to write for Jed Mercurio's ‘Critical' on Sky 1 and has had projects in development with a number of TV companies including Red Productions and ITV. She's also won a number of short play competitions, and one of these plays was a short horror called ‘The Ballad of a Haunted Man'. Emma met TV cameraman Dan Shoring during her MA. In 2017 they decided to turn ‘The Ballad of a Haunted Man' into a short film. Dan organised the crew and Emma assembled the cast: she already knew Helen Lederer, Emma's husband suggested Shane Attwooll, who he knew from the local music scene – Shane had just played George Cornell opposite Tom Hardy in Legend. Helen suggested Eliza Leonard to play her daughter. Thankfully they all loved the script. The film was made with no budget and a lot of good will. Emma also directed and co-produced with Dan. It's now screened at festivals across the world and won a number of awards, including Best Actor for Shane at The Twin Tiers International Film Festival in New York, Best Horror Film at The Mediterranean Film Festival in Cannes and Best Woman Filmmaker for Emma at the Los Angeles Independent Film Awards. In total it's received 3 Best Actor awards, 7 Seven Best Actor nominations, 5 Best Film awards and 17 Best Film nominations. It was released online on Sat 7th March after a 2-year festival run. Her new short film, The Boy Who Thought He Could Fly is just starting on the festival circuit. It stars Shane Attwooll, Jenna Russell and Archie Sanders, and is focused around the themes of grief, loss and of how important it is to talk and to listen. It's already won the Silver Spotlight Award for Best film at Spotlight Film Awards in Atlanta and Best Actor Under 18 at the monthly Gold Film Awards in London for Archie. Emma had a one act play, Invisible String, staged last year at an Off West End Theatre by Get Over It Productions who also staged her short play Ever Changing Skyline at the Chiswick Playhouse earlier this year. Ever Changing Skyline has just been selected by Kibo Productions to be staged as part of their new showcase at the Omnibus theatre in Clapham. She is also developing her own TV project with BBC Drama. Emma is married to Americana/Country singer Dave Sutherland whose music you can hear on both films. The Ballard of a Haunted man has now bee released on Youtube and can be found on the links below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Ma19wOk3-o www.maritimeradio.co.uk

The Long Now Foundation in Colorado (start time 5:02): People often measure “success” as fifteen minutes of fame, or a blockbuster financial quarter. This focus on short term results doesn’t always build the skills needed to solve long-term problems, such as reducing disease outbreaks or maintaining species diversity. So some visionaries have created a playfully serious way to think ahead, and those “ways” include projects here in Colorado. Shelley Schlender tells us about the Long Now Foundation who are developing programs to foster long term responsibility and long term thinking. Wild Boulder (start time 10:t28): Boulder is launching a new citizen science project. The project, called Wild Boulder, will allow people in Boulder to use their smartphones to record wildlife observations, including photos, and share this information with local land managers and open space experts. To find out how this program works, and how it will benefit the community, we spoke with Dave Sutherland and Melanie Hill. Dave Sutherland is an Interpretive Naturalist with theCity of Boulder's Open Space and Mountain Parksprogram. Melanie Hill is Director of Communications for the WILD Foundation, which works to protect wilderness while balancing the needs of human communities.
