“We can't step into God's promise while still holding onto the idols of yesterday.” - @andrejosiah In the final week of our Vision Series, Ps. Andre spoke on his vision to see our church become a people who refuses to settle. Speaking from the life of Terah, we learnt that there are a couple of factors why we settle in our faith - out of familiarity, out of grief or loss, or out of fear. When we allow these things to have a hold on us, they hold us back from stepping fully into what God has in store for us. Are there any areas in your life where you have settled, thus preventing you from taking that step of faith to fully obey God's call? We pray that God will grant us the courage to submit those areas to Him, and refuse to settle for anything less than all of Him.

The Tower of Babel is one of those events that is incredibly important but often misunderstood. Today, we'll study Genesis 11 and see why this passage is in our Bibles and how it serves as a dark backdrop to the entire message of God's Word. Join us for a key study in the key chapters in God's Word! DISCUSSION AND STUDY QUESTIONS: Genesis 11 1. Read through Genesis 11 and place a box around any words or phrases that speak of man's unity. Place a triangle around any words or phrases that speak of man's disunity. How does man's inability to communicate contribute to the disharmony among people? 2.    Read through Genesis 11 and circle the names Shem (in verse 10), Eber (in verse 14), Terah (in verse 24), and Abram (in verse 26). Then draw a line that connects them all, starting from Shem and ending with Abram. What is the significance of these connections?  3.    How did the study suggest that Genesis 11 serves as a dark backdrop to the rest of the Bible? What is so dark in this chapter? What is the diamond at the end of it?  4.    In verse 4, what reason did the people give for wanting to stay in the land of Shinar? What command was this in direct disobedience to? What was the purpose of that command?  5.    Looking at how the people were reasoning in verses 3 and 4, would you say they were taking God's instructions into consideration or disregarding them? Why do you think they had this mindset? 6.    In verse 4, was their sin “building the tower” or something else? How is that significant to the plan of God given in Genesis 1:28 and 9:1? 7.    The people used God's blessings to sin against Him. How might a person still use their God-given blessings to sin against Him? What, instead, should we do with God's blessings? 8.    How did God's judgment redirect the people to obey His commands? What does this tell us about one of the purposes of God's judgment? 9.    Who is the key person mentioned in verse 26? According to Genesis 17:5, what was his name later changed to? What did this new name mean?  10.    The people who settled in the Plain of Shinar were doing what seemed good to them, but they completely disregarded God's commands. When you look at your approach to life, how do you make decisions? Do most of your decisions simply reflect what you think is best? Do you normally consult God's Word for what He says on that matter? Why or why not? 11.    Would the people who know you describe you as a person who is actively seeking live according to God's way? Are you a person who seeks to please God, obey Him, and glorify Him? Why or why not? 12.    What implication does the meaning of “Abraham” have for the kind of nation Abraham was to be the father of? What does the study tell us about God's plan for choosing Abram from among the nations? 13.    Although we ought to obey God, none of us do perfectly. None of us can fully obey Him in our own strength. As we end our study in Genesis 11, take a moment to seek God's transforming grace, so that He might transform your heart, mind, will, and actions to conform to His holy standard in submission to His Son, who is our Lord and God and King? Thank you for joining us for today's worship service! We have a tradition of making the first worship service of the new year a time of meditation and prayer for God's guidance and blessing on our church, our community, and on the ministries that God is calling us to do. In today's message, we consider Terah, recorded in Genesis 11 and 12, who was the father of Abram who later became Abraham. God blessed Terah and led him from his birthplace in Ur toward the land of Caanan, but Terah could only go part of the way in his grief over a son who died young. We see God's mercy and love given to Terah and his family even though Terah failed at the goal God had set for him. God's blessing are not conditional, and we do not earn God's blessings through what we achieve. God's blessings come to us not because of who we are but because God is love. If you prayed to make Jesus your Lord today, we want to rejoice with you! If you would want someone to pray with you, we are eager to do so! If you would like more information about our church, we're want to share. Please text the word "NEXT" to 407-77 so we can engage with you. Most of us believe Abraham was the first to leave Ur in response to God's call. However, Genesis 11:30 reveals that Terah was the original visionary, the one who began the journey to Caanan. Something stirred within him, compelling him to leave Ur behind. Although the journey wasn't easy, the joy of fulfilling a vision was far greater than all the hardships he would endure. However, in the place called Haran, tragedy struck—Terah's son Haran died. This loss broke the spirit of the visionary. The one meant to carry his legacy was gone, and with him, Terah's motivation to fulfill his calling. Terah, now broken in spirit, settled in Haran. *A man defeated on the inside cannot defeat things on the outside.* There is nothing more frustrating for a man to see the glimpse of how glorious his life can be but never but never walk into it. It was here that the Lord spoke to Abraham in Genesis 12:1, reminding him that he wasn't created to perish halfway. The calling comes to him because he was meant to finish the journey his father began. Child of God, you were not meant to give up half way or in mediocrity; you are called for something more greater and glorious. We are not a generation of just beginners but we are a generation who will finish what God has started in us. Do not abort God's will and assignment over your life. God doesn't consult your family's history before calling you—the Word qualifies you! With all your getting, get the Word! You don't become a great nation by being surrounded by people or wealth; you become a great nation at the arrival of the Word. The Word transforms, qualifies, and equips you. When the Word comes, everything required for the journey comes with it. “and I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:”‭‭Genesis‬ ‭12‬:‭2‬ Out of all the people God could have chosen, He picked a family full of disadvantages. Despite being surrounded by evidence of his limitations, Abraham refused to trust what he saw in the natural and chose to believe God's Word. Now God takes the greatest disadvantage and produces glory out of it. Only God can take your weakness and turn it into a strength. Can you believe God and follow Him as if what you're trusting Him for has already happened? Can you walk as though you are already in the Promised Land? Faith isn't an emotional decision; it's a deep conviction. Faith takes a lot of planning and deliberate, intentional choices. Terah took a break when he should have kept walking, while Abraham arrived in Canaan because he didn't repeat his father's mistake. In transition, don't take a break—rest can become a trap for the soul. Keep walking; we don't take a break from the will of God; we don't rest from the assignments of God. When called to greatness, the temptation is not failure but little success. For Joseph, Potiphar's house was a bigger trap than the prison. Small success is what destroys greatness. The key to transition: Do not take a break till you arrive! There is a reward for obedience. When God appeared to Abraham and promised him the land, Abraham's first response was to build an altar. In the midst of those who claimed the land, Abraham raised an altar of ownership. Abraham makes an invisible contract in the realms of the Spirit by raising an altar unto the Lord, he was marking the territory as his own. When God speaks, many believers don't know how to immortalize the promise. Seal the Word with an altar! In the realms of the Spirit, the word is established. God grants ownership by speaking the Word; you enter into that ownership by raising an altar and entering into covenant with the Lord. A stranger became an owner through a covenant. 2025 is the year of possession—exit transition and take possession of the Promised Land.

You choose: your calling or your comfort."When they came to Harran, they settled there." Ge 11:31 NIVThe Bible says, "Terah took his son Abram... and together they set out from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to Canaan. But when they came to Harran, they settled there" (v. 31 NIV). A Christian author writes: "Terah accompanied Abram for part of the journey to Canaan, but then he stopped...Terah and his family begin their story in Ur, the great center of wealth and education and the land of idols. Then they continue on this road, which passes through the city of Harran and then down into Canaan…For Terah, the father of Abram, the road ends in Harran. Now we know from other passages in the Bible that Harran was a city a lot like Ur. There was a lot of wealth there. There were idols there. What's going on? It may well be that... Terah thinks to himself, 'If I were to go any farther than this, I could lose everything I have. For sure, I would have to give up my idols. So he chooses comfort. But Abram chooses to say yes to his calling." That's a choice you will have to make too. And you will have to make it more than once. As your circumstances change, and the seasons of your life progress, you will have to decide whether to walk with God into the unknown or settle for the security of what you know. Terah settled; Abram moved on. What are you going to do? You don't have to do anything to be worthy of God's love and grace; those are gifts. But to walk in God's blessing, you have to choose your calling over your comfort. You choose: your calling or your comfort Walk with God—or settle.Share This DevotionalSend us a textSupport the showChanging Lives | Building Strong Family | Impacting Our Community For Jesus Christ!

These are just two of the staggering facts we've learned about heir property from writer and author Terah Shelton Harris. Terah chats with new host Tenee' Frazier about her recent novel, Long After We Are Gone. It's about a family trying to save their ancestral land from being taken from them – shining a light on the damaging effects of heir property. She explains what heir property is, the detrimental effects it has on property ownership in African American communities, and the steps heirs should take to avoid land loss. Terah also shares her journey to becoming an author and the life events that helped shape her writing style.

In this lecture, Daniel discusses the biblical story of Abram, focusing on the themes of calling, identity, and the pursuit of a meaningful life. He opens with a reading from Genesis that details Abram's lineage, emphasizing his connection to Terah, and how Abram's family history unfolds in the land of Ur of the Chaldeans. Daniel highlights the early struggles of Abram, particularly his wife Sarai's inability to conceive, before detailing their journey from Ur to Haran and finally to Canaan.Daniel introduces the idea that the call from God is fundamentally an invitation to leave behind one's former life. This notion is illustrated through Abram's departure from his homeland and family, signifying a monumental shift not only in physical location but also in spiritual purpose. The lecture provides context to this call by exploring the societal implications of leaving one's land and family and the inherent risks involved in following a divine summons. The theme of meaning, or "Vocatio," is prominently discussed, as Daniel points out that today's society may reflect a 'meaning crisis'—a phenomenon where material wealth does not necessarily equate to a fulfilling life. Instead, the Christian narrative asserts that God seeks us and offers inherent meaning in our existence. Drawing parallels to various societal criticisms, Daniel suggests that the quest for identity and purpose should begin with understanding our innate belonging to God as created beings.Throughout the discussion, Daniel emphasizes the transformative aspects of God's call. He defines the calling not just as a personal invitation but as a communal and universal one, where God seeks to bless not only the individual but all nations through them. The repeated declaration of blessings in God's message to Abram reinforces the idea that divine favor is generously bestowed upon those who follow His path, irrespective of their past.Daniel also incorporates personal anecdotes and contemporary cultural references, such as discussing Omar Ahmed's disqualification from a race, to illustrate that one can strive earnestly yet still miss the mark, thus highlighting the importance of aligning one's ambitions with God's calling. This brings forth a deeper examination of what it means to respond to God's call: leaving behind not only sinful ways but also seemingly good aspects of life that may hold one back from fulfilling their true purpose. To enrich the theological discussion, Daniel addresses the internal struggle of trusting in God amidst the unpredictability of life. By referencing Abraham's journey and his faith despite the lack of immediate results, he illustrates that the essence of responding to God is a journey of trust, one that requires relinquishing control and embracing uncertainty in favor of divine promise.Ultimately, Daniel wraps up the lecture by reinforcing the significance of this call: that it is an invitation to cultivate a relationship with God, which unfolds in a communal experience among believers. He encourages listeners to deeply contemplate personal responses to their divine calling, urging them to consider where God might be inviting them to trust more fully. The closing prayer acts as a meditative reflection, prompting attendees to listen for God's invitation in their lives and to embrace the transformative journey of faith as they gather around the metaphorical table of God's family.

Join Ocean House owner and author Deborah Goodrich Royce for a conversation with author Terah Shelton Harris to discuss her novel Long After We Are Gone.  About Long After We Are Gone: “A big, beautiful, devastating, and ultimately hopeful novel.” – Erica Bauermeister, New York Times bestselling author of No Two Persons An explosive and emotional story of four siblings–each fighting their own personal battle–who return home in the wake of their father's death in order to save their family's home from being sold out from under them, from the author of One Summer in Savannah. “Don't let the white man take the house.” These are the last words King Solomon says to his son before he dies. Now all four Solomon siblings must return to North Carolina to save the Kingdom, their ancestral home and 200 acres of land, from a development company, who has their sights set on turning the valuable waterfront property into a luxury resort. While fighting to save the Kingdom, the siblings must also save themselves from the secrets they've been holding onto. Junior, the oldest son and married to his wife for eleven years, is secretly in love with another man. Second son Mance can't control his temper, which has landed him in prison more than once. CeCe, the oldest daughter and a lawyer in New York City, has embezzled thousands of dollars from her firm's clients. Youngest daughter Tokey wonders why she doesn't seem to fit into this family, which has left an aching hole in her heart that she tries to fill in harmful ways. As the Solomons come together to fight for the Kingdom, each of their façades begins to crumble and collide in unexpected ways. Told in alternating viewpoints, Long After We Are Gone is a searing portrait on the power of family and letting go of things that no longer serve you, exploring the burden of familial expectations, the detriment of miscommunication, and the lessons and legacies we pass on to our children. Genesis 11 recounts the story of the Tower of Babel and the descendants of Noah's sons after the flood. The chapter begins by describing a time when all the people of the earth spoke the same language. As they journeyed eastward, they settled in the land of Shinar and decided to build a city with a tower that reached to the heavens, hoping to make a name for themselves and avoid being scattered across the earth. God observed their actions and, concerned that their unity in language made them capable of great things, decided to confuse their language. This confusion made it impossible for the people to understand one another, resulting in them abandoning the construction of the tower and scattering across the earth, as God intended. The city came to be called Babel, which means “confusion.” The latter part of Genesis 11 provides the genealogies of Shem's descendants, leading up to Terah, the father of Abram (later known as Abraham). Terah's family, including Abram, Sarai (later Sarah), and Lot, began a journey from Ur of the Chaldeans toward the land of Canaan, though they initially settled in Haran. This chapter reflects themes of human pride, unity, and divine intervention, as well as the origins of languages and the spread of nations across the earth. It also sets the stage for the story of Abram, who will become a central figure in the unfolding of God's covenant with humanity.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sendme-radio--732966/support.

And Joshua said unto all the people, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Your fathers dwelt on the other side of the flood in old time, even Terah, the father of Abraham, and the father of Nachor: and they served other gods. And I took your father Abraham from the other side of the flood, and led him throughout all the land of Canaan, and multiplied his seed, and gave him Isaac. And I gave unto Isaac Jacob and Esau: and I gave unto Esau mount Seir, to possess it; but Jacob and his children went down into Egypt. I sent Moses also and Aaron, and I plagued Egypt, according to that which I did among them: and afterward I brought you out. And I brought your fathers out of Egypt: and ye came unto the sea; and the Egyptians pursued after your fathers with chariots and horsemen unto the Red sea. And when they cried unto the LORD, he put darkness between you and the Egyptians, and brought the sea upon them, and covered them; and your eyes have seen what I have done in Egypt: and ye dwelt in the wilderness a long season. And I brought you into the land of the Amorites, which dwelt on the other side Jordan; and they fought with you: and I gave them into your hand, that ye might possess their land; and I destroyed them from before you. Then Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, arose and warred against Israel, and sent and called Balaam the son of Beor to curse you: But I would not hearken unto Balaam; therefore he blessed you still: so I delivered you out of his hand. ...

Passage: 1 Joshua assembled all the tribes of Israel at Shechem and summoned Israel's elders, leaders, judges, and officers, and they presented themselves before God. 2 Joshua said to all the people, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Long ago your ancestors, including Terah, the father of Abraham and Nahor, lived beyond the Euphrates River and worshiped other gods. 14 “Therefore, fear the Lord and worship him in sincerity and truth. Get rid of the gods your ancestors worshiped beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt, and worship the Lord. 15 But if it doesn't please you to worship the Lord, choose for yourselves today: Which will you worship — the gods your ancestors worshiped beyond the Euphrates River or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living? As for me and my family, we will worship the Lord.” 16 The people replied, “We will certainly not abandon the Lord to worship other gods! 17 For the Lord our God brought us and our ancestors out of the land of Egypt, out of the place of slavery, and performed these great signs before our eyes. He also protected us all along the way we went and among all the peoples whose lands we traveled through. 18 The Lord drove out before us all the peoples, including the Amorites who lived in the land. We too will worship the Lord, because he is our God.” 19 But Joshua told the people, “You will not be able to worship the Lord, because he is a holy God. He is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgressions and sins. 20 If you abandon the Lord and worship foreign gods, he will turn against you, harm you, and completely destroy you, after he has been good to you.” 21 “No! ” the people answered Joshua. “We will worship the Lord.” 22 Joshua then told the people, “You are witnesses against yourselves that you yourselves have chosen to worship the Lord.” “We are witnesses,” they said. 23 “Then get rid of the foreign gods that are among you and turn your hearts to the Lord, the God of Israel.” 24 So the people said to Joshua, “We will worship the Lord our God and obey him.” 25 On that day Joshua made a covenant for the people at Shechem and established a statute and ordinance for them. -- Joshua 24:1-2,14-25 (CSB) Song: Holy Forever (https://open.spotify.com/track/1Cll5XrepsCJgUFMj4sQH3?si=9975357b2b10422b) by Brian Johnson, Chris Tomlin, Jason Ingram, Jenn Johnson, and Phil Wickham, sung by Chris Tomlin and the band CAIN Lyrics: A thousand generations falling down in worship To sing the song of ages to the Lamb And all who've gone before us And all who will believe Will sing the song of ages to the Lamb (Jesus) Your name is the highest Your name is the greatest Your name stands above them all All thrones and dominions All powers and positions Your name stands above them all And the angels cry Holy All creation cries Holy You are lifted high Holy Holy forever If you've been forgiven and if you've been redeemed Sing the song forever to the Lamb If you walk in freedom and if you bear His name Sing the song forever to the Lamb We'll sing the song forever and amen Hear Your people sing Holy To the King of Kings Holy You will always be Holy Holy forever You will always be Holy Holy forever Prayer: Almighty and everlasting God, who governs all things in heaven and earth: Mercifully hear the supplications of your people, and grant us your peace all the days of our life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. -The Gregorian Sacramentary

Joshua 23:1-4 - Chosen to Serve

Joshua 24 could be called Joshua's farewell address! These are his final words to the nation just before he dies (Joshua 24:29). In chapter 23, Joshua called the leaders of the people together at either Shiloh where the tabernacle was set up, or at Ephraim the home of his inheritance.   In Joshua 24, Joshua gathers all the tribes of Israel and leaders to come to Shechem and present themselves before God (v. 1). It is there in this ideal location that he gives this moving farewell address reminding the people one final time of the importance of remembering their history going back to Abraham.   It was at Shechem that God promised Abraham that his descendants would inherit the land (Gen. 12:6-7). This is the place that Jacob built an altar after he returned to Canaan. Genesis 33:20, “Then he erected an altar there and called it El Elohe Israel.”  The literal meaning of this name is, “God, the God of Israel.” Shechem was located between Mt. Ebal and Mt. Gerizim, and you might remember this is where the people of Israel had reaffirmed their commitment to the Lord in Joshua 8:30-35. Shechem was indeed "holy ground" to the Israelites.   In Joshua 23, the key words appear to be “nation and land” in Joshua's first address. But here in Joshua 24, the name LORD (Jehovah), is the major focus in this second address. Joshua refers to the LORD twenty-one times. In fact, in 24:2-13, it is the LORD who speaks as Joshua reviews the history of the nation.   Another key word is “serve” in Joshua 24. This word is used fifteen times in this address. Jehovah gave them their land and would bless them in their land if they loved Him and served Him. God didn't give them this “good land” just to set back and enjoy all the blessings of it for themselves. They were to serve the LORD God of Israel and make His name great to all the nations of the earth. This reminds us that we have been saved to serve the Lord Jesus Christ and share Him with the nations today!   In Joshua 24:2-4, Joshua begins his review of the history of Israel by reminding the people of how God chose and called their fathers, Terah, Abraham, and Nahor, who were idol worshippers on the other side of the River. (Gen. 11:27-12:9). And how God led Abraham to this land of Canaan and multiplied his descendants. And how God gave Abraham Isaac, and to Isaac He gave Jacob and Esau.   Stephen in his own farewell speech declared in Acts 7:2, "The God of glory appeared unto our father Abraham," reminding the Jews that their national identity was an act of God's grace. Abraham didn't seek after God and discover Him; it was God who came to Abraham! There was nothing special about the Jews that God should choose them (Deut. 7:1-11; 26:1-11; 32:10); and this fact should have kept them humble and obedient.   "You did not choose Me," Jesus told His disciples, “But I chose you and appointed you that you should bring forth fruit…." (John 15:16). Believers were chosen in Christ "before the foundation of the world" (Eph. 1:4) and are called "God's elect" (Rom. 8:33; Titus 1:1). I personally believe this calling and election is for service, not for salvation. Ephesians 2:10 I am born a citizen of our country, but I get chosen and elected to serve in a position of leadership. Every born-again believer is called to serve and bring forth fruit for the glory of God (John 15). I believe that the Scriptures teach that God desires that every person can and should experience His great salvation: “The Lord is not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9). “Jesus tasted death for every man” (Hebrews 2:9). “…God our Savior, who will have all men to be saved, and to come to the knowledge of the truth” (1 Timothy 2:3-4). Paul proclaimed, that “Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:13).   Today, do you know Jesus as your Savior? Today, are you serving Him?

"And Terah took his son Abram and his grandson Lot, the son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, his son Abram's wife, and they went out with them from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to the land of Canaan; and they came to Haran and dwelt there. and they went out with them from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to the land of Canaan; and they came to Haran and dwelt there." Genesis 11:31  I  declare that I will fully enter into my promised land, I will take up my place and dwell in the inheritance the Lord has given me. I will not stop at Haran when Canaan is the ultimate destination. My life will collide with the mark that God has set for it in the name of Jesus. After all, almost Canaan is still not Canaan. Through the winding hills and valleys, I will insist on Canaan.  Roller coaster journey or not, I am Canaan bound. How easy it is to set forth for Canaan and like Terah wind up in Haran and eventually end up living and dying in a place that you never intended to be?  I declare I will not die in a place that was meant to be a rest stop. I will not set up camp  where I was meant to simply pass through. Father deliver me from the many  distractions that are set up en route to Canaan. Take away the spirit of indecisiveness from me.  My mind and heart are in agreement with you, And the rest of my body says Amen. So help me spirit of the living God. This is Sassy and I pray the release of the Kingdom of God into your life. Amen! Philadelphia Christian Church with Pastor Omar Thibeaux

Pastor Omar took us on a profound journey through the book of Jasher, focusing on the life of Abraham. We discovered fascinating insights about Abraham's early years and his deep commitment to the Lord. We learned that Abraham was mentored by Noah and Shem, gaining wisdom and understanding of God's ways. Upon returning home, Abraham confronted his father Terah about his idolatry, displaying a fervent zeal for godliness that eventually led him into serious trouble. Abraham's unwavering faith brought him before the formidable King Nimrod, who, in a fit of anger, cast Abraham into a fiery furnace. This gripping narrative revealed that Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were not the first to face such a trial; Abraham's story prefigures their miraculous survival. In an astonishing turn of events, the only thing that burned in the fire was the rope that bound Abraham, leaving his clothes and life unscathed. Pastor Omar's message reminded us that our trials and struggles can be the very instruments of our liberation. Just as Abraham emerged from the furnace unharmed, our own challenges can set us free, refining our faith and strengthening our spirit. Join us as we continue to delve into these ancient texts, uncovering timeless truths that inspire and transform our lives.

A startling 41 million American adults - roughly 1 in 6 - have some college credits but no degree. Crews powerfully argues that ignoring this population exacerbates enrollment, workforce, and wage gaps across society. ReUp takes an innovative approach, partnering with universities and state governments to re-engage stopout students and support degree completion. Their statewide "marketplaces" centralize these efforts, removing disincentives for student transfers between schools. Crews discusses ReUp's groundbreaking work in New Jersey, having already re-enrolled thousands of students in just the first two terms. The conversation explores AI's impending impact on the workforce, creating urgency to upskill this population. Crews emphasizes higher education must evolve to better serve adult learners through improved user experiences, drawing lessons from intuitive consumer platforms like Amazon.
