In this episode, featured poet Theta Pavis (0:03:00) speaks with Ann Wallace about her new chapbook, The Red Strobe, which just came out from Finishing Line Press. Theta's work is marked by grief and pain, but also love, family, protection, and a fierce kind of resilience—as can be seen in the garden her mother created many years ago, a garden which is now Theta's, in her Jersey City yard. Follow Theta online at ThetaPavis.comRandi Eckel returns for a brand-new Ask Randi segment about NPSNJ's upcoming BioBlitz, (0:34:31) to celebrate National Native Plant Month. Randi describes how volunteers, scientists, and naturalists collaborate to document as many native species as possible in a specific area within a set timeframe. Kim Correro is then joined by Bobbie Herbs, (0:41:36) co-leader of the NPSNJ Southwest Chapter. Bobbie has played a crucial role in establishing the IGC Committee, which aims to encourage independent nurseries throughout New Jersey to stock native plants. Together, Kim and Bobbie talk with award-winning author and pollinator conservationist Heather Holm. Heather is an expert on the interactions between native pollinators and native plants, and she will teach a four-week course for NPSNJ beginning in April. In the final segment, Kim and Ann speak with Paula Whyman (1:09:57) about her new book, Bad Naturalist: One Woman's Ecological Education on a Wild Virginia Mountaintop, which was released this winter by Timber Press. Blending memoir, natural history, and conservation science, the book chronicles her efforts to restore a former mountaintop farm to its natural habitat.

FULL SHOW NOTESToday's guest is Alison Young, Co-Director of the Center for Biodiversity and Community Science at the California Academy of Sciences. Alison has a background in marine biology, including a MA in Marine Biology from Humboldt State University and a BA in Biology from Swarthmore College. At the Cal Academy, Alison is a driving force behind the City Nature Challenge, which is a 4 day global BioBlitz event that had over 1.25 million nature observations in 2021 across 400 different global locations. Mark your calendars! This year it runs from April 29 to May 2 local time, and I hope all of you plan to participate! I know my calendar is full of fun and unique events all four days!Today Alison and I discuss the community, science, and fun that is the City Nature Challenge, and how you can participate in this year's event. Whether you live in a city or not, in northern or southern latitudes, or are stuck at home, you can participate, and Alison offers wonderful insights for all of those scenarios. We discuss the goals of the challenge, and of course, exactly what it is. Alison also tells us how the City Nature Challenge grew from what was initially thought to be a one-time competition between two rival cities - Los Angeles and San Francisco, to the massive annual event that it is today. And Alison offers several tips for making useful observations in iNaturalist, taking good photos, and how to make the City Nature Challenge a fun and enticing event even if the season or weather isn't what you'd consider optimal for your area. You can get more information at citynaturechallenge.org, and follow the city nature challenge at citnatchallenge on both twitter and instagram. And follow Alison at alisonkestrel on Twitter and Instagram, or just kestrel on iNaturalist.FULL SHOW NOTESLinksPeople, Events, OrganizationsGreat Southern BioBlitz - an event for the Southern HemisphereJulia Butterfly Hill - lived in a Redwood tree for 738 days to draw attention and prevent cutting of rare old growth redwoodsLila Higgins, Senior Manager, Community Science at Natural History Museum of LA CountySnapshot Cal Coast - A California Coast bioblitz event BooksThe Song of the Dodo: Island Biogeography in an Age of Extinction by David Quammen. Star Warsologies: A Podcast About Science and Star Wars

This episode of Star Warsologies explores the world of conservation biology.   Joining us in our discussion of wildlife conservation in the galaxy far, far away is Sam Wynns, a conservation biologist and science educator for Cabrillo National Monument in San Diego. In a huge galaxy, how would you select which places and species to protect? With all the interplanetary travel, are there any native species left? How do sarlaccs reproduce? Is there a real world explanation for why wampas and tauntauns are so large? We also learn why New Zealand is tops in protecting their unique habitats, and see who can make better tauntaun sounds! Check out this episode on Star Wars & conservation biology and find out!     In Star Warsologies, hosts James Floyd and Melissa Miller combine their love of Star Wars with their keen interest in all things academic, scientific, or technological by asking experts about how their field is represented in a galaxy far, far away.
