Brovember concludes with some mid-30s male ennui in the mid-90s, “Beautiful Girls”. Despite the stacked ensemble cast of Oscar winners and nominees, only Rosie O'Donnell gets to steal the show for a couple minutes while Uma Thurman, Mira Sorvino, Annabeth Gish, Lauren Holly and Martha Plimpton get to play girlfriends and love interests and Natalie Portman is the literal girl next door in a very uncomfortable subplot that truly signals our retreat from bro movies next month. https://youtube.com/live/_pP90qYQStM Alex Van Halen gets candid about brother's health struggles, tension with David Lee Roth. The world knew him as Eddie Van Halen, guitarist extraordinaire. But to Alex Van Halen, he was Edward, maybe Ed, but never Eddie. He was also a best friend, the sensitive soul who “couldn't filter out criticism” and a reluctant guitar hero with a boyish grin. And he was a brother, born 20 months after Alex, with whom he would form one of the most influential rock bands in history. In “Brothers” (out Oct. 22, Harper Collins, 226 pages, $32), Alex Van Halen unloads his love for his sibling and the consuming grief he still experiences since Ed died of cancer in October 2020. Their story includes the two-week boat ride from their native Holland to America in 1962 – the Van Halen family would settle in Pasadena, California – the brothers shunning their piano lessons to play rock ‘n' roll after hearing The Beatles and the Dave Clark Five and Alex's migration to the drums and his idolization of Cream's Ginger Baker. As a band, Van Halen pioneered musical techniques (just listen to Eddie's then-unheard-of finger tapping on “Eruption” or Alex's engine-purring double bass drum opening on “Hot for Teacher”) while blitzing rock fans with “Jamie's Cryin',” “So This is Love?” “Beautiful Girls” and MTV staples “Jump” and “Panama.” Alex, 71, doesn't scrimp on entertaining anecdotes, such as how the roar that opens “Runnin' with the Devil” entailed ripping the horns out of their cars, and when on tour with Ozzy Osbourne, the British rocker wandered into the wrong hotel and slept for two days. Alex is also unvarnished when discussing frontman David Lee Roth, whom he thinks was “angry at Ed for being too talented” and expressing his own anger when Ed agreed to play an uncredited guitar solo on Michael Jackson's “Beat It” (“Why would you burn up creativity on someone else's record?”). In an interview with USA TODAY, Alex Van Halen plunged deeper into some of the topics in the book, such as his own addiction issues and Ed's health struggles, while also extending humor and thoughtfulness.
Prepare to immerse yourself in the 1980s rock scene as we explore the electrifying world of Van Halen. Matt and Samer take you on a fascinating journey through the band's evolution, sharing personal insights and experiences that bring the music to life. Learn why the band's famous concert rider demanded no brown M&Ms and how this quirky detail ensured the safety of their elaborate stage setups. As we reminisce about our favorite Van Halen tracks, you'll discover the stories behind unforgettable hits like "Beautiful Girls" and "Everybody Wants Some!!". Feel the energy of Eddie Van Halen's iconic guitar riffs and Alex Van Halen's masterful drumming that turned their live shows into legendary rock experiences. Whether you're a lifelong fan or new to their sound, Samer's fresh perspective will make you appreciate the band's legacy in a whole new way.Witness the dramatic shift in Van Halen's musical style as we discuss the transition from David Lee Roth to Sammy Hagar. We delve into the band's search for their new frontman, exploring their surprising approaches before landing on Hagar, and how this change influenced their sound from edgy rock anthems to synth-driven, relationship-focused tracks. We also examine the band's later years, including the impact of albums like "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge" and "Balance," culminating in a tribute to Eddie Van Halen's lasting legacy in rock history.https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/intro-to-van-halen/pl.u-ygAVHbq4xE1. We're podcasters, not astronauts, so give us some slack if we don't shoot for new heights with "The Beautiful Girls." A Mad Men episode with ample hijinks and comedy mixed with dramatic workplace sexism and Don Draper constantly disappointing the women in his life. Because, well, this is Mad Men. And the Mad Men "Men" never know what's going on... In case this is your first time digging into our podcast, we recap Mad Men from the perspective of a first-time watcher, someone who only watched the show once while it was airing, and a superfan who watches excessively instead of having a functional social life. Discussion Points: What is "The Beautiful Girls" truly saying about sexism underneath it all? Does this episode feel too much like a redux of previous Mad Men episodes? What drives Joan and Roger and to do what they do after getting mugged? Can we give it up for Ms. Blankenship, Queen of Perversions, first of her name and protecter of the realm, an astronaut if there ever was one? Is Sally really Don's weak spot? Speaking of spots, why did Don put Faye on one? Why does Faye struggle to connect with Sally? Is this the springtime of Peggy's youth? Extra credits: Matthew Weiner created Mad Men, which aired on AMC from 2007 to 2015. Michael Uppendahl directed “The Beautiful Girls” and Matthew Weiner co-wrote the script with Dahvi Waller. The show stars Jon Hamm, January Jones, Elisabeth Moss, Vincent Kartheiser, Christina Hendricks, John Slattery, Robert Morse, and many more. Our intro music is “Mad Men Men” by Tom Davidson, which is an original remix of the show's opening theme “A Beautiful Mine” by RJD2. Podcast illustration is by Jon Negroni. Our podcast hosts include Jon Negroni (Podcast Editor of InBetweenDrafts), Will Ashton (cohost of the Cinemaholics podcast), and Michael Overhulse (a guy who's addicted to working at startups).See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Meek Mill's gone from hero to zero in one post—how did he go from saving the city to looking downright goofy? Then, we're calling out the elephant in the room—NSYNC's downfall. Is Justin Timberlake really the star he thinks he is, or has his ego brought the band down? In a twist of tech and talent, Eminem has embraced AI. What does this mean for the future of music and the rap legend's legacy? The Secret Service is under fire, and we're not holding back. Are they really protecting the President, or is there more to the story? From music to mayhem, Sean Kingston finds himself behind bars in a million-dollar scam. We'll break down the facts and discuss the urgent need for change. Stay tuned, because The Kasabian Lavoe Show starts now, and we're diving deep into these hot topics!" #Subscribe #kasabianlavoe
Grammy-nominated singer and songwriter Sean Kingston, famous for his hits "Beautiful Girls" and "Fire Burning," has recently been indicted, along with his mother, in a $1 million fraud scheme. The case marks a significant fall from grace for Kingston, who emerged on the music scene in 2007 with chart-topping hits that earned him international acclaim.Details of the indictment reveal the alleged complex web of fraudulent activities spun by Kingston and his mother. The duo purportedly carried out deceptive practices to acquire high-end goods without paying for them, causing significant losses for multiple businesses in the process. In other news, business tycoon and multi-platinum artist Sean "P. Diddy" Combs has returned the "Key to the City of New York" as per the request of the Mayor. Acclaimed for his revolutionary contributions to the music industry and philanthropic endeavors, Combs originally received the key as a recognition of his influence and for his significant role in the city's cultural landscape. However, the reasons behind the Mayor's unprecedented request for its return remains undisclosed. In a separate development, pop sensation Billie Eilish has written herself into the record books by becoming the youngest singer to reach 100 million Spotify monthly listeners. The fiercely independent and distinctive singer-songwriter achieved this remarkable feat at just 19 years old, solidifying her place in the pantheon of music legends. These three stories underscore the unpredictable pathways of fame, the serious consequences of unlawful actions, the potential change of public recognition, and the extraordinary achievements that young talent can attain in the music industry today. Through both their triumphs and tribulations, these artists continue to shape and navigate the ever-evolving world of entertainment.

My friend Dan Neumann (Pediatrician, age 36, married father of 2, RM, lives in Roy Utah, no longer active in the church) joins us to share his powerful story. Dan talks about growing up in Elgin, IL, being very active in the Church, and knowing he was attracted to boys — but always expecting it would go away. Dan talks about silently suffering during these years with depression and suicidal ideation, while trying to compensate by being an overachiever. Dan talks about how, because of his same sex attractions, his relationship with God struggled greatly. He felt that God is “not pleased with me”, that he “never could measure up”, that “God is mad at me”, and that he “never felt acceptable to God." Dan asks, “if I hate who I am, how can God love who I am?” These are sobering insights into how the things we say about queer people deeply affect how they feel about themselves as well as how they believe God must feel about them. Dan talks about the work he is doing to take away shame, to be honest and authentic, and to move forward in his life. Dan also talks about being open about his sexual orientation while dating women, including with his wife, Anna, as they were dating. Dan talks about being very active in the Church during med school and residency in Chicago and in the first few years in his pediatric practice in Utah, but eventually deciding (about 2 years ago) to no longer be active. He was open and transparent with his Bishop who reacted positively and has a very good relationship and ongoing communication with Dan. Dan talks about supporting his wife and kids in being active in the Church, and he also accepted a calling as a ward choir pianist. If you are feelings shame about your sexual orientation or gender identity, please listen to Dan's story. It will help you. And if you are looking to better support queer Latter-day Saints, Dan's story will open your heart to how we can do better. No one should feel shame for who they are. We need to learn to proactively say kind things about queer Latter-day Saints. You are a good man Dan. Respect for concurrently navigating your sexual orientation, getting through medical school/becoming a pediatrician, and starting a family. You are one of my new heroes. Thanks for all you do to make this world a better place. Annabeth Gish (IG:@annabeth_gish)(TW:@annabethgish) who is currently in Succession is a versatile actress who weathered the transition from child actor to adult, with a variety of dramatic and comedic roles on film and television. Anne Elizabeth Gish was born on March 13, 1971 in Albuquerque, New Mexico and moved with her family to Cedar Falls, at the age of two. Her parents were both teachers; her father, Robert Gish, was an English professor at the University of Northern Iowa, her mother, Judy, taught at Malcolm Price Laboratory School. Performing in community theater productions throughout her childhood, Gish began her professional acting career, at the age of eight, by appearing in a number of commercials. She made her screen debut, at the age of 13, in the teen film, Desert Bloom (1986), opposite Jon Voight, and, in following years, has found success in film and television. Gish starred in the films, Hiding Out (1987), with Jon Cryer, Mystic Pizza (1988), with Julia Roberts, and on Shag(1988), opposite Phoebe Cates and Bridget Fonda. She also played the lead role, as rape victim "Lyn McKenna", in the TV movie, When He's Not a Stranger (1989). Gish went on to graduate from Cedar Falls' Northern University High School in 1989. In addition to acting, Gish took time to focus on her academic career and attended Duke University. Studying English as well as theater, she graduated with honors, in 1993, with a BA in English. Gish returned to screens in the mid-1990s, with appearances in supporting roles, in films Wyatt Earp (1994), The Last Supper (1995) and critical praise biopic, Nixon (1995). Annabeth Gish (IG:@annabeth_gish)(TW:@annabethgish) who is currently in Succession is a versatile actress who weathered the transition from child actor to adult, with a variety of dramatic and comedic roles on film and television. Her parents were both teachers; her father, Robert Gish, was an English professor at the University of Northern Iowa, her mother, Judy, taught at Malcolm Price Laboratory School. Rosie O'Donnell is a beloved comedian, celebrated actress, and talk show legend. Despite all these professional accolades, it is perhaps her generosity of spirit, her tireless advocacy on behalf of children and families, and her heartfelt commitment to the health of the American theater that most definitively define her impact on popular culture.Born in Commack, New York on March 21, 1962, Rosie O'Donnell embarked on a career as a standup comedian right out of high school, and in short order found herself enjoying a five show winning streak on the iconic television series, “Star Search” Shortly thereafter, she scored additional major appearances on television, including a regular role as Maggie O'Brien on NBC's popular sitcom, “Gimme a Break” and a high profile run as a VH1 VJIn 1992, Rosie was cast alongside Tom Hanks, Madonna, and Geena Davis in the smash hit “A League of Their Own.” She went on to further success on the big screen, starring in twelve films between 1992 and 1996, including 1993's “Sleepless in Seattle,” 1995's “Now and Then,”and 1996's “Beautiful Girls.”Her most monumental break came by accepting NBC's offer to host a variety daytime television show, “The Rosie O'Donnell Show” in 1996. Rosie's innate love of all things show business and her easy rapport with the celebrities she had grown up idolizing translated into a unique and hugely popular TV phenomenon. “The Rosie O'Donnell Show” ran for six seasons and went on to win a variety of Emmy awards, leaving a memorable mark on American television before ending production in 2002.In the past 20 years, Rosie's dedication to her artistic endeavors and charitable interests have continued unabated. She has been a regular fixture on television, on Broadway, and, in recent years, has gotten rave reviews for her powerful performances in Showtime's “SMILF” and HBO's “I Know This Much is True.” She can currently be seen in the Showtime original series, “American Gigolo.”-bio adapted and edited from Rosie.com

Today on the show we have legendary film producer Cary Woods. Cary Woods is a film producer best known for producing worldwide blockbusters such as Scream and Godzilla, the beloved independent films Kids, Cop Land, and Gummo, and modern classics like Rudy and Swingers.Woods is also responsible for producing the breakthrough features of such notable directors as James Mangold, Doug Liman, M. Night Shyamalan, Alexander Payne, Harmony Korine, and Larry Clark, as well as the screenwriting debuts of Jon Favreau, Kevin Williamson, and Scott Rosenberg.Woods' filmography features a lineup of A-List actors, including: Robert Downey, Jr., Robert De Niro, Sylvester Stallone, Marisa Tomei, Christopher Walken, Harvey Keitel, Mike Myers, Laura Dern, Heather Graham, Ray Liotta, Burt Reynolds, Drew Barrymore, Matthew Broderick, Courteney Cox, Timothy Hutton, Andy Garcia, Neve Campbell, Sean Astin, Michael Rapaport, Jean Reno, and Steve Buscemi.Born and raised in the Bronx, Woods graduated from the USC Gould School of Law before beginning his career at the William Morris Agency (now WME). As an agent, Woods represented - and in many cases introduced audiences to - the likes of Gus Van Sant, Uma Thurman, Jennifer Connelly, Milla Jovovich, Charlie Sheen, Matt Dillon, Todd Solondz, and most prominently, Gregory Peck.At WMA, Woods also represented many of the industry's most successful stand-up comedians including Sam Kinison, Andrew Dice Clay, Gilbert Gottfried, Sandra Bernhard, Tommy Davidson, and Jackie Mason. After developing the Indie favorites Heathers and Drugstore Cowboy as an agent, Woods accepted a position at Sony Pictures Entertainment (the parent company of Columbia Pictures and TriStar Pictures) as a Vice President - Office of the Chairman, reporting directly to Peter Guber. Woods later segued to a production deal at Sony, resulting in the release of a succession of iconic films, including So I Married An Axe Murderer, Rudy, Only You, and Threesome. After starting his own production company - Independent Pictures - the explosive release of the 1995 cultural phenomenon Kids (starring then-newcomers Rosario Dawson and Chloe Sevigny) began a streak of culturally significant, critically-acclaimed independent films produced by Woods under his banner. The next few years saw the releases of Citizen Ruth (the first film from future two-time Oscar winner Alexander Payne), Beautiful Girls (which introduced American audiences to Natalie Portman), and Swingers (springboarding Vince Vaughn to comedy mega-stardom).His 1996 film Scream (the most successful film of "Master of Horror" Wes Craven's career) marked a turning point for the entire genre, grossing over $170 million and setting a box office record that would stand for 22 years. The film instantly and single-handedly pivoted horror toward postmodernism, spawning a massive billion-dollar franchise (consisting of successful sequels, a TV series, toys, and Halloween costumes), as well as inspiring countless knock-offs in the years since.Gummo - the directorial debut of Kids' screenwriter Harmony Korine - received the FIPRESCI Prize at the 1997 Venice Film Festival. Bernando Bertolucci, the famed director of Last Tango in Paris, praised the film, calling it "The one revolutionary film of the late 20th century."In 1998, the first US-produced entry of the iconic Godzilla film franchise would become Woods' and Independent Pictures' single highest-grossing film, earning nearly $400 million.Woods would go on to serve as co-Chairman, and Chief Creative Officer of Plum TV, in which he was a founding partner. Broadcasting in the nation's most affluent markets (i.e. Aspen, the Hamptons, Miami Beach), the luxury lifestyle network would go on to earn eight Emmy Awards.Enjoy my conversation with Cary Woods.
