Interview with David Greelish, Apple Lisa Documentary Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/FloppyDays Sponsors: 8-Bit Classics Arcade Shopper FutureVision Research Hello, and welcome to episode 150 of the Floppy Days Podcast for April, 2025. My name is Randy Kindig and I'm the host for this journey through the annals of home computer history. This month, I'm going to step aside from the ongoing series of episodes about the HP 97/67 programmable calculators to bring you a timely interview with a good friend about an interesting topic. That friend is David Greelish, a computer historian, and the topic is his recent publication of a film documentary about the Apple Lisa, called "Before Macintosh: The Apple Lisa". David tells us all about the film, why he produced it, why the Apple Lisa was an important part of home computer history, who he interviewed for the film (he had some amazing guests) and much more. It's a great film and should interest a lot of the listeners, so please consider going out and purchasing the film in order to support David's efforts. For upcoming shows, we do have one more episode in the series on the HP97 with HP calculator historian Wlodek Mier-Jedrzejowicz. I will air that episode very soon. Episode Notes In this episode, Libba chats with computer historian David Greelish about the rise and impact of the personal computer, vintage computer collecting, the history behind computing technology, and thoughts on the future of communication technology. It's a fascinating discussion, and we look forward to David joining us to present on the history of computers during our May 22nd Homeschool Day: The Information Age. David Greelish is the author of Classic Computing, which includes all ten issues of the groundbreaking computer history “zine” (newsletter/magazine) Historically Brewed & Classic Computing in one professionally bound volume. Classic Computing also includes the personal background story of David Greelish, Publisher and Editor (writer for many of the stories, too.) David has also written numerous articles including those for Time Magazine and Forbes, and he has produced a great documentary titled Before Macintosh: The Apple Lisa which explores the history, technology, people, stories and industry influence of this lesser-known personal computer. A lot has changed since then, but also not much has changed since then. But we are now almost a decade wiser (and, yes, maybe we’ll do another milestone episode in a year, when the podcast itself becomes, by some definitions, "retro"). So, this might be an opportune time to look back on what has happened in the past nine years in the retrocomputing endeavor. How has your own relationship to it changed personally? Welcome to episode 56 of the Floppy Days Podcast where old computers come to life again. I’m Randy Kindig. I want to thank Ian Baronofsky and Rick Reynolds for providing their thoughts and memories of the TI-99 computer. This is the fifth and final installment in a series of episodes on the TI-99/4A home computer. This episode will cover TI-99 ads, user groups and shows, emulation, buying one today, community, and Web sites. My very special co-hosts for this episode are again two well-known figures in the TI-99 community: Chris Schneider, who produces the SHIFT838 newsletter and Rich Polivka, who manages the popular 99er.net Web site. They provide a ton of information about the amazing TI-994/A home computer. I hope you enjoy this. The TI-99/4A - History, with Jim Fetzner and Mark Wills This is the second in a multi-part series on the TI-99/4A computer. For this history segment, I was lucky enough to find a couple of people who have an incredible history with the TI-99, Jim Fetzner and Mark Wills. Jim has an extensive, multilingual library of all things TI and possesses some very interesting hardware items related to the TI-99. Mark is the author of TurboForth for the TI-99/4A and has been involved in the TI-99/4A scene pretty much since 1983. He’s also English, living in the UK, so he has a rather British take on the home computer wars. I will cover TI-99 history with the help of these two gentlemen. I think you will find this very interesting!
