Happy New Year Nerds! It's our podcast house-rule that we always take the first week of the year off. Usually we upload a trailer and season preview, but that's coming next week! This week, we have a very special live show recording. In October of 2024, we teamed up with some other podcast friends to host a round of Family Feud at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo. Jokes were made, hosts were embarassed, pride was forfeited. This is that recording. We're running a Listener Survey for the first time ever! We'd love your input. If you have 5 minutes, check it out here: https://forms.gle/AQBnkg1C83hkkap28 Special thanks to PRGE for having us and Sam, Jennasis, and Toasty for joining us! Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. Everyone's back in the house once again this week, and we've got all sorts of gaming goodies to dive into, so let's get rolling! Kevin gets things starts off with some more thoughts on his time with UFO 50, now that he's fired up every game in the collection. Randall keeps the retro theme rolling after that, as he discusses his recent trip to the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, and spotlights a handful of his Sega snags. John wraps things up with a few arcade-y indie games that he's been firing up on the ol' Steam Deck — including Genome Guardian, FLERP, and Whackerball. Rather than swelter in the Austin sun listening to music or attending one of the many festivals in town, I decided to pony up a few bucks and fly to Oregon to attend the Portland Retro Gaming Expo. I expected a giant convention where I'd spend too much money on retro goodies, check out a panel or two and see my pals at Gamer's Week host a competition. What happened was infinitely more impactful and special. Join me as I share a full recap of the weekend that was including on-the-floor interviews, spicy hot takes and a surprisingly emotional conclusion I never expected. This year, Gamers Week was invited to host the Blockbuster World Video Game Championships IV at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo 2023! Now fresh off our flights home, we recap our entire crazy experience -- the good, the bad, and the unexpectedly heartwarming. We'll also be talking about how Sony has finally confirmed the heavily rumored PlayStation 5 slim for this holiday season, how Activision hired James Corden to host an employee meeting with Bobby Kotick, and how Super Mario Bros Wonder devs were allowed "to prioritize content over schedule" - so they ended up with 2,000 sticky notes of inspiration. We love our sponsors! Just in time for Portland Retro Gaming Expo (kinda), we present episode 141! This time, instead of the usual booing from people listening, the boos we here are from the spooky creatures that come herewith and thereto and therein with two creepy-themed games. Join us for our usual reviews, commentary, and side-splitting hair-raising banter!
With co-host Kelsey Lewin leaving the Video Game History Foundation, we will be putting the show on pause for the rest of the year. We want to thank Kelsey for everything she's given to this show, to VGHF, and to our team and we all wish her great success in her future endeavors. As for the Video Game History Hour, we've decided to take the rest of the year to refresh, rethink, and redefine what this show looks like. You might still hear from us occasionally throughout the rest of 2023, but we will be taking a break from the regularly scheduled content. When we return in early 2024, we're confident the format of the show will still be every bit as wonderful as what you've all come to know and love if not even better. In the meantime, if you're planning to attend Portland Retro Gaming Expo this weekend, please stop by our museum and say hello! Hey folks, this is a quick announcement that's also a bummer. Earlier in the year we'd said that we planned to return to the Portland Retro Gaming Expo. We submitted a proposal for our panel, and waited, and waited, and waited... only to learn just recently that we'd been rejected. Without doing a live panel it doesn't make sense for us to spend the money and time to make an appearance at the show. We apologize sincerely if you'd already made plans to attend... Gary will still be around, and it's still a fun show to attend (even if just to see the Retronauts, who will be doing a panel this year). In the podcast episode attached to this post we talk about what we asked for, and what our plans for live appearances will be. In short, we're looking at attending other shows in other parts of the country. So if you know of any video game expos or conferences, let us know about them, but more importantly, ASK THEM TO BOOK US. Reaching out on social media makes a difference, for real. We are also looking at doing another Duckfest, if that ends up making sense. This is a little rough because obviously we have very normal brains and aren't sensitive to rejection at all. But we soldier on, and are grateful for all of your support, which makes these ups and downs easier to weather. Thanks! Kole
Floppy Days 126 - Interview with Bob Frankston, Co-developer of Visicalc Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/FloppyDays Sponsors: 8-Bit Classics Arcade Shopper Hello, everyone! Welcome to episode 126 of the Floppy Days Podcast, with yours truly, Randy Kindig, as the host. Everyone, and I mean everyone, listening to this podcast has surely heard of the ground-breaking application (for its time) Visicalc. Visicalc was the first spreadsheet computer program for personal computers, originally released for the Apple II by VisiCorp on October 17, 1979. It is considered the killer application for the Apple II, turning the microcomputer from a hobby for computer enthusiasts into a serious business tool, and then prompting IBM to introduce the IBM PC two years later. More than 700,000 copies were sold in six years, and up to 1 million copies over its history. Initially developed for the Apple II computer, VisiCalc was ported to numerous platforms, both 8-bit and some of the early 16-bit systems, such as the Commodore PET, Atari 8-bit, TRS-80 (TRSDOS), CP/M, MS-DOS, and even the HP Series 80. VisiCalc was later replaced in the market by Lotus 1-2-3 and eventually by Microsoft's Excel, which is the dominant spreadsheet today. Spreadsheets, along with word processors, and presentation tools are still today considered one of the key applications for computing. Bob Frankston, along with Dan Bricklin, are the co-inventors of VisiCalc. This month, we have an interview with the aforementioned Bob Frankston. Bob was kind enough to take time to talk with me about what it was like to create such a ground-breaking tool. Before doing that, I have a few new acquisitions to discuss and I'll tell you about upcoming computer shows. My guest today is co-director of the Video Game History Foundation, the non-profit dedicated to preserving, celebrating, and teaching the history of video games. In 2017, after graduating college, my guest helped curate an Atari-themed pop-up exhibition at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo. Two years later Game Informer enlisted her as a volunteer to digitize the magazine's entire archive at its Minnesota headquarters. After five weeks of intense work, she became the Video Game History Foundation's co-director. Described by the New Yorker magazine as “compact and laser focussed”, since then she has sifted through thousands of old documents, discs, magazines, and prototypes in an effort to rescue the video game medium's history from oblivion. “Once institutions can see that putting effort and funding behind video game preservation in a useful, sustainable way is possible — I think they'll do it,” she recently wrote. “We're working on it, but the work is just beginning.” Welcome, Kelsey Lewin. Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. We've got the usual trio in the house tonight, and a whole slew of video gaming goodness to dive into, so let's get right into it... This week, we kick things off with some additional thoughts on a few of the games that we've discussed on recent episodes of the podcast, before kicking the ball over to John for his first impressions on Splatoon 3 — after just saying he wasn't going to pick it up a couple weeks back. From there, we all dig into our impressions of the heavily retro inspired Panzer Paladin, and inevitably end up praising some of our favorites from Tribute Games in the process. Finally, Randall closes things out with his adventures at this year's Portland Retro Gaming Expo, which was his first time getting a chance to go back to the show since 2014! Welcome back to The MinnMax Show! On this week's episode, Ben Hanson is joined by Jacob Geller, Janet Garcia, and Kyle Hilliard to talk about the first five hours of God of War: Ragnarok without spoiling any story details. Then Jacob Geller unloads his thoughts on Infinity Ward's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and he and Kyle try to share their odd appreciation of Scorn. Jeff Marchiafava joins the show as we all talk about Gotham Knights from Warner Bros. Montreal and why it misses the mark. Welcome back Skele-friends! This week Derek and the Deuce go over the trials and tribulations of 16-player Faceball 2000 for the original GameBoy. The weekend was absolutely packed with Faceball 2000 related nonsense, but they still went to Portland Retro Gaming Expo and dish on their experience. Then it's Patreon question time, which prompt a minor existential crisis. It's Stop Skeletons From Podcasting! There was no time to Resident Evil this week, which can't be right, right?? I'm shocked and shook. As always, thank you so much for supporting the show, and don't forget to rate us 5 stars wherever you get your podcasts! Stay Powerful! Grace

*Insert train whistle here* It's Spooktacular Express week 3 and we're getting High Concept. There aren't many better (betterier?) ways to celebrate spooky season than curling up with your boo for a scary slasher flick. We've produced plenty of movies here at DT!HQ but none of them have been slashers. Opportunity knocked and we answered with web-based, stick figure-centric, flash game-inspired pitches to decide which flash game would make the best kitschy slasher movie! Todd comes in strong but it doesn't take long for him to pizza himself into a bad time. Matt has a bone to pick with 2001's Donnie Darko. Kyle sets a new record for longest walk on shortest pier which, on this show, is honestly the most impressive thing. We made a lot of new friends this weekend at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo! If you're one of those new friends, welcome! Also, the show notes keep going, keep scrolling. Spooktacular Review-a-thon: Step 1: Review the podcast on Apple Podcasts, Podchaser, Goodpods, or anywhere else you can write reviews! Step 2: Take a screenshot of your review, post it to social media, and tag us @debatethiscast Step 3: We'll read your review in a spooky voice during the October ad breaks! If we get 20 new reviews this month, we'll make Todd play Doki Doki Literature Club live on Twitch! Spooktacular Patreon Bonus: Everyone who joins our Patreon at patreon.com/debatethiscast will score a free Halloween-themed, Debate This! chotchkey! *Insert train whistle here* It's Spooktacular Express time y'all! Gear up for our month-long, Halloween-themed content adventure as we bored the train for a mythical mall in Colorado. We may not have an almost-zombie daughter, a goblin mask, or a bunch of NPCs to escort to the safe room, but we're still talking Dead Rising. It's time to slay some zombies because this week we're trying to make the best combo weapon with a video game item and a real world thing! (Keep scrolling for some Spooktacular Patreon Info) Andrew is on the defensive this week. Kyle may not understand how carpet works. Todd seems like he might have picked up a jewelry sponsorship but don't worry, he has to tell us.
