When Mark Doering-Powell, ASC was hired as the DP of Freeform's grown-ish after season one, he knew the show had to expand the storylines of each character's college experience. He was excited to take more of an anthology approach to some of the episodes, and get creative shooting each chapter with multiple looks. A single camera half-hour comedy such as grown-ish takes about four days to shoot, creating an extremely tight schedule between prepping and shooting. Mark thinks it's imperative to be in touch with post and the dailies colorist at the end of each day, so everyone can stay on top of the workload. On a rapid schedule it can be challenging to make the show look cinematic, but finding each character's point of view helps consolidate the work and keeps each shot economical. Mark favors using “swingles” on grown-ish, where the camera swings back and forth between characters on single shots, saving setup times. With a focus on each college-age character's personal life and position on social issues as they navigate their early 20's, the lighting on grown-ish is intended to make the cast look their best, and sometimes Mark employs classic Hollywood portrait lighting techniques using crisp, controllable hard light. Mark also likes to splash hard light onto the set, letting it naturally bounce off of something that is already in the room. He's learned to focus on lighting the people and then the space- lighting the space can aid lighting the people. Mark went to art school in New York, studying painting and graphic design until he found the film department and changed his major to film. He then worked as a Photo-sonics technician, which is a special high speed camera for shooting slow motion, on several commercials in the 1980's and 90's. But Mark wanted to focus more on filmmaking, so he quit, moved out to L.A. and started working for Roger Corman's studio in Venice, including camera assisting on Corman's famously unreleased 1994 version of The Fantastic Four. A documentary about the production called Doomed: The Untold Story of Roger Corman's The Fantastic Four was made in 2015. If you had the technology available to you and the money to pay for it, would you make a holographic image of yourself to share with loved ones once you're gone? I mean, just because you can doesn't mean that you should. Right? That's where we're at on this one. We talk about holographic images, sci-fi feeling possible futures for us, and how we feel about social media (again). We also go into the past, how it looks on recorded videos, our fascination with recording our own history, etc. We also go into parenting, what it means to sacrifice, and looking for purpose. Today on The Leaders' Brief - India's decision to stay out of the RCEP has experts divided. The Indian government has maintained that the multilateral trade agreement between all ASEAN members, China, Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea is biased and does not resolve the core issues which India wants to address. Instead, as part of its intent to increase bilateral economic relationships, India's next potential target is Africa, an untapped market for Indian exports. IT giant IBM has raised alarms on potential hackers targeting the COVID-19 vaccine cold chain supply process. According to the US-based company, firms which are critical to distributing the vaccines are becoming increasingly vulnerable to digital spies. Scientists from the UK's royal society recently conducted a research showing how streaming HD videos contribute to climate change. The report states “HD video streaming on a platform generates about eight times more emissions than streaming in standard definition”. The total contribution of digital technology to carbon emissions ranges between 1.4% to 5.9%. In conjunction with the exhibition 'Topographic Resolutions II' at local artist-run initiative Kuiper Projects, the IMA and Kuiper presented a panel discussion and screening that considered the relationship between landscape and computer-generated imagery, both in contemporary art and wider culture. Curator Kyle Weise and artists Baden Pailthorpe and Kathryn Brimblecombe-Fox discuss their relationships to digital depictions of landscape and its entanglement with militarism, a theme also found across the late filmmaker Harun Farocki’s practice. The discussion was followed by a screening of one of Farocki’s final films, Parallel I-IV (2012-14, 45 mins) which incorporates found footage including that from video games The Legend of Zelda and Grand Theft Auto V to comment on the genre of computer animation and the history of style in computer graphics. A discussion on “How Long Should Tech Last” starts with the realization that the hardware and software you buy today is, sooner or later, going to be obsolete. That may seem obvious when it comes to computers, less so when talking about smart speakers, home automation hardware, and other electronics. The panel of Charles Edge, Ken Ray, Brett Terpstra, and host Chuck Joiner dig in from both the hardware and software angles. The expectations of consumers are often different than those of consumers. The first part of the conversation talks about those issues, the “invisible contract” that we all sign regarding upgrades, and some personal experiences with now out-of-date hardware. FireConnect Since almost the beginning we have been looking for ways to ditch wires. They are a pain to run across rooms, create unsightly bulges in carpet or even require drywall cutting. There are a few technologies that have been out for some time now. We have AirPlay by apple, Chromecast by Google, Bluetooth, and few other lesser known technologies. They all work pretty well and have support from various receiver manufacturers. A newer technology was brought to our attention by a listener called FireConnect. FireConnect is the brainchild of San Francisco based Blackfire Research Corp. Fireconnect has the usual feature list but goes beyond what the typical wireless protocols support today. Features: High-res and multichannel - Streaming of up to 24-bit/192kHz audio, and multichannel 2.1, 5.1 or 7.1 audio. Lossy or lossless BT and Aux Input Rebroadcast - Auxiliary inputs and Bluetooth devices will be rebroadcast wirelessly. Multi Source Play - You can sync zones or play them independently. Video streaming - Currently if you want to stream video you need an add on device. FireConnect is hoping to make streaming video as simple as sending it to your A/V Receiver or TV. Their spec supports the ability to stream HD Video and lossless 24-bit/192kHz Studio Quality HD audio to any device. Google Cast included - Why not? It's open to the world! To keep everything running smooth and in sync, Fireconnect gets down to the packet layer of your network data. RPM (Real-Time Packet Management) Delays in receiving packets is one of the most challenging issues in real-time video delivery over wireless networks. A late packet becomes useless for the decoding and display even if it is received correctly at the receiver. RPM allows Fireconnect devices to stream HD Video and lossless 24-bit/192kHz Studio Quality HD audio to any device in any room - it's how they make sure that there are no gaps or drop-outs in your music and video. TIS (Traffic Independent Synchronization) No matter how busy your network is, your content stays in sync. Delays are adjusted in real time so that a speaker in the family does not drift too far off from the rest of the zones. These adjustments are happening constantly and are not noticeable by the listener. DSB (Dynamic Stream Balancing) When streaming to multiple devices, DSB keeps it all in balance. - Not quite sure what this is but keeping things in balance is always a good idea! The goal is to wirelessly transmit your audio and video to your media devices, which include Multi-Room smart speakers, A/V Receivers, smartwatches and smart TVs across different manufactures so long as they use the Fireconnect technology. The technology will be able to turn your smartwatch into a music hub that can wirelessly send audio to your wireless headphones or music zones throughout your house. Video does not have to be point to point. You will be able to stream a video signal to multiple screens. So you'll be able to watch the same video throughout your home whether it's on the big screen or tablet. Where can I get it? Pioneer and Onkyo have receivers that support this tech. Pioneer VSX-1131 7.2-Channel AV Receiver with MCACC built-in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi $539 - Firmware update required Onkyo TX-NR555 7.2-Channel Network A/V Receiver $449 Firmware update required. Multi-room audio enabled by this technology requires an optional Onkyo wireless speaker scheduled for release in late 2016. Onkyo cannot guarantee the compatibility of its A/V receivers with other devices featuring FireConnect. Uh-Oh!! HTC One Play music simultaneously to multiple Blackfire compliant speakers from HTC One M9. As far as speakers go we couldn't find any. That's not saying there aren't any, but a simple search revealed nothing. So pretty much as best as we can see it. You'll be able to send audio from your HTC One to an Onkyo or Pioneer receiver and have it play through your wired speakers. This technology was announced in 2010 and may only be coming on the scene. We'll keep our eyes on it for you and see how it develops. But right now we have a hard time seeing how it will be able to beat Google and Apple's entrenched technology.

DJI and 3D Robotics introduce new quadcopters, more FAA exemptions, EASA looking at RPAS regulations, and export control implications for drones. News The World's Largest Drone Company Unveils Newest Product DJI Phantom 3 DJI introduced the Phantom 3 in two models, the Professional at $1259 and the Advanced at $999. The Professional offers a 1080P 4K camera. Both come with the Lightbridge Technology offering real-time HD Video from up to a mile away. The DJI app now includes a flight simulator. 3D Robotics teases stylish drone with pro features 3D Robotics released a teaser video for a new quadcopter to be introduced April 13th. It looks like the styling team took a page from the DJI Phantom book. Engadget believes it will have first person view out of the box, a pre-programmable flying route, perhaps follow-me settings, and a new gimbal design. 3D Robotics Launches DroneKit, Its API For Building Drone Apps A few weeks ago, 3D Robotics launched “DroneKit,” an open-source API for writing drone apps. It works with any drone that uses its APM autopilot. With the API, developers can write web-based and mobile apps, as well as apps written in Python that run on the drone itself. FAA Grants 30 New Commercial UAS Exemptions The FAA approved 30 more commercial UAS exemptions, including exemptions for insurance companies USAA and AIG. In a press release (FAA Approves Drone Petition), USAA says, “The Federal Aviation Administration approved USAA's petition on April 2 to conduct research and development on its new unmanned aircraft system (UAS) program to better serve members, especially after catastrophes.” The FAA approved USAA's use of a PrecisionHawk drone for daytime, line-of-sight flights under 400 feet with a trained pilot. USAA will work with PrecisionHawk to develop best practices, safety and privacy protocols, and procedures for future operational use. In another press release (It's Wheels Up with ‘Transformative Technology') written before the petition was submitted, USAA provides some examples of the applications they have in mind: “We're constantly seeking ways to better serve our members, especially during catastrophes, when getting into neighborhoods immediately after can be dangerous to human life, and applying new technologies is one way we can do that,” says Alan Krapf, president, USAA property and casualty insurance group. USAA has teamed up with Texas A&M University to research and develop how to effectively put UAS to work for its members. This is being conducted with the University's Roboticists Without Borders and Center for Robot-Assisted Search and Rescue (CRASAR). Also granted exemptions were AeroVironment for agriculture, aerial survey, and patrol applications, and senseFly for precision agriculture. The total number of approved exemptions is now 99. The FAA has received 700 applications. EASA Presents its Vision for the Future of the Aviation Regulatory System EASA (the European Aviation Safety Agency) published an ‘EASA Opinion' with proposals for the future of the aviation regulatory system. They include proposals for Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPASs). As part of implementing a General Aviation Road Map, EASA proposes to amend existing regulations to introduce, “...the necessary flexibility for small, low-risk GA as well as for Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPASs) by introducing provisions which will allow possible deviations from existing requirements, where appropriate.” US policy on the export of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS): a detailed look and analysis The U.S. Department of State conducted a UAS policy review and has issued a new policy that governs the export and subsequent use of commercial and military unmanned systems. The new policy could allow export of weaponized UAS to U.S. allies, under certain circumstances and uses. The policy also could also allow export of more types of commercial UAS to other countries,
