“I've given myself the title of ‘cat with nine lives.'” In this inspiring episode of the Project Purple Podcast, host Dino Verrelli talks with Toni Bravo, a pancreatic cancer survivor and student at the University of Notre Dame, to share her incredible cancer journey. Toni opens up about the shocking moment she was diagnosed during her junior year of college. The diagnosis came after an accident where she was hit by a car in a crash. Despite an initial CT scan missing the tumor, Toni's instincts told her something was wrong. Two months later, a follow-up CT scan revealed the truth. Toni reflects on how her life changed when she received the diagnosis alone, away from home. Her personal mantras, “Everything happens for a reason” and “Focus on the things you can control,” helped her navigate the challenges she faced. “I've always looked at everything as a redirection of my life. I've always had a pretty optimistic outlook,” she says. Drawing on childhood lessons, like adaptability, Toni shares how her experience taught her to cherish time. Throughout the conversation, Toni talks about the impact cancer had on her life as a young adult, processing the surgery to remove the tumor, how it changed her college career, grappling with mortality at just 20 years old, and finding peace. Her story is a powerful testament to hope, resilience, and strength. Subscribe to the Project Purple Podcast for more powerful stories from the pancreatic cancer community. After losing his mother to pancreatic cancer in 2011 as well as several other people he was close to, Gord Townley began his mission to help fight for a cure. That's when he combined his passion for cycling with his goal of helping to improve pancreatic cancer survival rates to form 7 Days in May - a charity ride that circumnavigates all of Lake Ontario in 7 days. After raising approximately $20,000 Canadian in its first year, the event has grown to raise approximately $1.4 million Canadian all-time, becoming one of Pancreatic Cancer Canada's largest independent fundraising groups. On this week's episode, Gord and Project Purple Founder & CEO Dino Verrelli discuss the story of “7 Days in May” and share a little bit about what it's like to run an endurance-sports-focused pancreatic cancer charity. Today’s guests include the founder of Project Purple, Dino Verrelli, and Project Purple Community Member, Keelin Hodgkins DiMario! Project Purple is a non-profit organization created to raise awareness, support patients and families affected by the disease, and fund research efforts to defeat pancreatic cancer. The non-profit organization came to fruition after Dino’s father was first diagnosed with pancreatic cancer back in 2008. After chemotherapy and a handful of procedures, his father John, was in the clear only to find out that the cancer had come back in 2010. Keelin and her family have also experienced a handful of hard losses with pancreatic cancer over the years, and you’ll hear first hand how horrible this disease is from both guests today. As pancreatic cancer has no early detection, it’s up to us to continue spreading awareness and raising funds to fight this disease as best we can! Here’s to growing on the go with Dino and Keelin today. On this episode of The Extra Mile podcast, I take a walk on a beautiful New York City day with the founder of Project Purple, Dino Verrelli. Founded in honor of his father who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2008, Project Purple was created to raise awareness, support patients and families affected by the disease, and fund research efforts to defeat pancreatic cancer. Through their fitness events, Project Purple has made a massive impact on patients and their families and has funded over $1 million in pancreatic cancer research. I love how Dino is honest about absolutely hating running at first. But when he got the idea to make Project Purple's first major event series- 13 half marathons in 13 months- he just knew he had to commit to it. Flash forward to his current passion for running (and more importantly running for a cause) and his story is even more inspiring. It was an honor to walk with Dino and I am thrilled to welcome Project Purple into the Charity Miles family. Thank you for your amazing work!
