Ebbene sì, anche i tedeschi lasciano il loro Paese per motivi di lavoro. Oppure per godersi la pensione in un clima migliore. Secondo l'ente federale di statistica, è la Svizzera ad attirare il maggior numero di expat tedeschi. L'Italia nel 2025 risultava al settimo posto tra le mete preferite, con 36mila tedeschi stabilitisi a Sud delle Alpi. Lo Stalag X B è uno dei campi di concentramento dove i nazisti hanno radunato più di trentamila prigionieri di guerra.  Qui un gruppo di Internati Militari Italiani (fra i quali Brignole, Guareschi, Tedeschi e Natta) riesce a conoscere l'andamento della guerra e a seguire l'avanzata delle truppe Alleate, grazie a “Caterina”, una radio ricevente costruita in modo artigianale e tenuta nascosta a rischio della vita. Con questo rigoroso ma emozionante romanzo a sfondo storico, Fiorenza Pistocchi restituisce la parola a chi ha scelto di resistere e di dire no alla Repubblica di Salò. Una resistenza fatta non con le armi ma con le scelte. Tutti i protagonisti citati nel libro sono realmente esistiti, eccetto “Francesco”, la voce narrante, il soldato che per salvarsi accetta di spiare i suoi compagni. A lungo trascurata e poco conosciuta, la vicenda dei 650mila Italienische Militär-Internierte, gli Internati Militari Italiani (IMI), che dopo l'8 settembre del ‘43 si rifiutarono di entrare nell'esercito della Repubblica Sociale Italiana, fu la drammatica esperienza di migliaia di uomini che, abbandonati a se stessi, lontani da casa e privati della possibilità di combattere, vissero la loro “resistenza” tra il filo spinato dei lager. Non riconosciuti come prigionieri di guerra, trasformati in lavoratori coatti e sottoposti a condizioni molto dure, tra umiliazioni, botte, fame e malattie ‒ non fecero ritorno in 40mila ‒ molti di loro maturarono una nuova consapevolezza civile e personale, trovando nella solidarietà, nella cultura e persino nell'ironia strumenti per conservare dignità e identità. A Sandbostel furono internati il tenente di vascello della Regia Marina Giuseppe Brignole, ligure di Noli, eroe di guerra decorato con medaglia d'oro, che ricopriva il ruolo di fiduciario dei prigionieri italiani; l'attore e regista Gianrico Tedeschi, che allestiva continuamente nuovi spettacoli; il giornalista e polemista Giovannino Guareschi, che inventò dei “giornali parlati” per far sorridere i suoi commilitoni; il paleontologo Vittorio Vialli, appassionato fotografo che riuscì a documentare di nascosto la realtà dei lager; il futuro segretario del PCI Alessandro Natta; e, poi, poeti (Roberto Rebora), filosofi (Enzo Paci), musicisti (il compositore Enrico Cagna Cabiati, il cantante lirico Carlo Bergonzi), giuristi (Enrico Allorio e Rosario Scifo), ingegneri. Ma è Radio Caterina ad essere un vero e proprio personaggio in questo romanzo. Costruita con materiali di fortuna (pezzi di celluloide, ritagli di latta, stoffa, stagnola, cartone, spago, cartine di sigarette, monetine, filo di metallo, aceto dei sottaceti, magneti di una bicicletta) collegati tra loro in modo approssimativo dentro ad uno sgangherato contenitore di legno, l'apparecchio, smontabile in tutte le sue parti e nascoste in baracche separate, riuscì a sfuggire a tutte le perquisizioni.«Avevamo costruito degli apparecchi radio che non esito a chiamare miracolosi e che basterebbero a dimostrare come sappiano essere d'ingegno formidabile gli italiani quando debbono lottare contro le avversità. Ascoltammo milioni di parole in ogni lingua: non sentimmo mai una parola per noi nella nostra lingua»: così scriveva Giovannino Guareschi nel suo “Diario clandestino” (1949). Fondamentali per la realizzazione di Radio Caterina furono due piemontesi: il tenente Bartolomeo Carlo Martignago e il sottotenente Oliviero Olivero. Il primo, ingegnere idraulico, era veneto di origini ma visse e lavorò a Torino, dove la sua famiglia d'origine possedeva una ditta che installava tubi del gas. Il secondo era nato a Torino nel 1919 e sin da giovanissimo costruiva ingegnosi apparecchi di radiotrasmissione. Rientrato in Italia, divenne un ingegnere famoso nel campo della telefonia, brevettando molti suoi ritrovati tecnici originali. Morì nel 1999 a Firenze.Grazie alla loro audacia e perizia venne realizzato un oggetto con un potere enorme, quello di dare speranza ai prigionieri, di far loro scoprire che il mondo andava avanti anche fuori dal filo spinato, che la guerra aveva un andamento diverso da quello che si poteva immaginare in quel luogo di fango e sabbia, e che forse la libertà non era così lontana. “Il sottotenente Oliviero Olivero esce di corsa dalla baracca magazzino lasciando che la porta alle sue spalle sbatta rumorosamente. È sera, ma non è ancora buio, merito della latitudine di Sandbostel; fa caldo, ma non abbastanza da invogliarlo a togliersi l'ultimo dei tre berretti che durante la stagione fredda ha indossato uno sopra l'altro... anche perché quel berretto gli permette di tenere ben schiacciato sull'orecchio l'auricolare di Radio Caterina, lasciando libera la mano sinistra per la regolazione manuale della sintonia e la destra per la trascrizione delle notizie sui fogli che gli procura ogni giorno il tenente Martignago.” “Uno della mia baracca era impazzito: una notte era corso urlando verso il filo spinato e vi si era attaccato, nel tentativo di superarlo; il soldato sulla torretta gli aveva sparato... e lui era rimasto lì, immobile, impigliato nella recinzione, misera statua funebre di se stesso, reso visibile dai riflettori che illuminavano a giorno il filo spinato, finché dopo qualche ora, con la luce del mattino, alcuni tedeschi erano andati a staccare a fatica dai fili le sue mani irrigidite dalla morte e dal gelo, e l'avevano portato via. Uno dei nostri carcerieri, un polacco che sapeva qualcosa di italiano, aveva detto che i soldati in servizio sulle torrette ottenevano un giorno di licenza se uccidevano un prigioniero.” Fiorenza Pistocchi è nata a Savona, e vive a Pioltello, vicino a Milano, dove è stata insegnante e poi Assessore alla Cultura. The wound between women is not just interpersonal. It is neurobiological, historical, and deeply rooted in systems that were designed to divide us.
