Teneise will be making her way back to Broadway to perform in Wicked as Broadway reopens in the Fall. You'll hear in our conversation why Teneise's return to Broadway will be shorter than her original debut, and I'm so excited to see how this next chapter of her life unfolds for her. Teneise spent five years performing with the Philadelphia Dance Company known as Philadanco, she's performed at Radio City Music Hall as a Rockette, and after her final performances of Wicked, she's now heading into the next chapter of her life with her family and career in Georgia where she and her husband just purchased their forever home! Teneise talks me through her decision to take a leap of Faith on herself as she moves to a new city, trusting that things will fall into place from all of the hard work she's done and the path she has created for herself up to this point. Week four of the Performing Arts Industry Series brings us Caskey Hunsader! The first three episodes of this series involved performers that take center stage when it comes to a show. Today, we're going behind the curtain and talking to an individual that makes everything happen far beyond the curtain rising on opening night. Caskey Hunsader is a native Midwesterner that went to college for musical theater performance. He came to New York with a job lined up, and it was that job as a production assistant at Radio City Music Hall that allowed our paths to cross many years ago! Caskey's job as a production assistant in the Christmas Spectacular soon came to a close as it was a seasonal job, and he found himself looking for work. Thanks to his work ethic and having a few connections in the industry, Caskey learned what it was to be a stage manager as he soon took this position in another show. You'll hear more about the importance of this position and just how much goes into it as Caskey talks us through it all. If you're in the industry, you know exactly how important this job throughout a contract. If you're not, well — keep in mind that as with any job, it's all a team effort, and stage management is part of that team. Enjoy growing on the go with Caskey Hunsader! Today we are joined by Rick Tjia! As a man of many trades, Rick has been a talent scout for Cirque du Soleil for many years. He's also the co-founder of a company called Choreography Online, and he's graced many stages as a professional dancer throughout his career. You’ll hear all about Rick’s journey that led him to where he is living in Canada today. I think it’s extremely important to take a moment and recognize that we all have our very own special path in life. What we think may take us to one place in life may actually be preparing us to go elsewhere. Life has this amazing way of working things out for us when we show up for ourselves. Today we are joined by Allie Christensen! Allie is a movement expert and founder of Align Fitness by Allie. She’s also the creator and host of Beyond The Pointe Podcast! Growing up, I killed myself in dance class after dance class always hoping to get stronger as a dancer, but somewhere along the lines I feel like I sort of plateaued and didn’t understand what it would take for me to get to the next level in my training. It was almost as if I was beating a dead horse without realizing that overtraining was going to take a toll on my body. Looking back, there was a smarter way to go about it, but I just didn’t know what that was. In my book, a dancer is an athlete. There’s no way around it! And it’s so important for athletes and people of all natures to train smart rather just as hard as we can, in my opinion. Allie helps people, dancers to be specific, do exactly that. She helps dancers create a solid foundation to build upon throughout their training whether they want to become a professional dancer or not. As a younger dancer, Allie saw herself dancing professionally when she got older. While she didn’t necessarily set out to help other people get the most out of their dancing initially, an injury in life later led her to doing exactly that. I am absolutely fascinated by Allie and her passion for what she does, and I can’t wait for you to listen to this episode. Not to mention the major pivot, there’s that word again, she had to make during quarantine. I’m a firm believer that dance can teach us more than just how to use our bodies, and in this case — I was right. Dancers, if we’re lucky to become a professional one day, don’t have as long of a professional career as our bodies are our instruments we aren’t able to perform at peak capacity up until we’re fifty-five to sixty years old. The years we are able to perform in our prime are so extremely special, and we have to do everything we can to protect our bodies and stay in the game if we wish to dance as long as we can. I wish I had known just how important strength training and fueling my body were back when I was fifteen. There’s a lot to unpack here, but I’m so grateful Allie took the time to make this conversation. Let’s get to growing on the go with Allie Christensen! As always, please feel free to share this episode if it resonated with you in any way! If you have an extra minute, drop a rating + review for me here. Today's guest is Claire Wasserman, the founder of LADIES GET PAID! Ladies Get Paid is a global organization of OVER 75,000 women, a community, and it also happens to be a book that Claire has authored to help women do exactly that: GET PAID! Claire is all about helping women advance personally, professionally, and financially all the while feeling empowered to do so. The current wage gap has continued to fuel Claire in her mission to help women, and she’s spending her days taking the taboo out of talking about money. When is the last time you had to to negotiate for yourself regarding your salary, your paid time off, or maybe even your freelance rates? I find myself doing some of these things more often than not as I’m making career changes, and honestly — I wish I had more of these tools in my back pocket as well as some of the extraordinary confidence Claire has as I started out in the professional world many moons ago. I’ve learned quite a bit over the last decade, but advocating for myself still has yet to come easy. We’ll call it a work in progress! The more we do it, hopefully — the easier it gets. If we’re not advocating for ourselves, who will? I’ve followed Claire via social media for a while as her confidence in this area has drawn me in and made me realize that the only person who can speak up for me is me! Today we are joined by the Editor in Chief of Dance Media Publications, Jennifer Stahl! If you’re anything like me or you’ve ever been a dancer, you may have special memories of growing up reading magazines like Dance Spirit or Dance Magazine. These publications, among a few others under the Dance Media umbrella, helped shape my youth and allowed me to believe in the possibility of becoming a professional dancer at some point in life. I reached out to Jennifer in hopes of having a conversation that may inspire younger generations wanting a professional career in the dance industry. I also wanted to talk to her about being a dancer that chose a professional career combining a love for dance as well as journalism. I love Jennifer’s story about how she ended up where she is today, and I think she’s truly doing her part to have and print the hard conversations needed in the dance industry and beyond right now. Shannon Buth, Founder of House of Shan, joins us for episode 38 today! What started out as a blog has now essentially become a community that is all about empowering others to 'live what you love' on a daily basis and never quit your day dream! After stumbling on Shannon’s website, I quickly learned that her company is all about connection, empowering women, spreading positivity and giving back to women’s charities. With a background in fashion, Shannon has designed apparel that includes an imperfect heart on every piece, and this heart signifies a daily reminder to 'live your passion, laugh everyday, love deeply, and never quit your day dream'. In other words, 'LIVE WHAT YOU LOVE'! Not only does this reminder resonate with me, but I can absolutely support a company that donates $5 from every purchase to a women’s charity. Today’s guests include the founder of Project Purple, Dino Verrelli, and Project Purple Community Member, Keelin Hodgkins DiMario! Project Purple is a non-profit organization created to raise awareness, support patients and families affected by the disease, and fund research efforts to defeat pancreatic cancer. The non-profit organization came to fruition after Dino’s father was first diagnosed with pancreatic cancer back in 2008. Today we're joined by Ruka, The Artist. I always like to ask guests how they personally like to be introduced or what title they may use to describe themselves. As someone who has worn the educator, director, teacher, dancer, and hat of many professions, it’s no question to understand that Ruka truly is an artist in all senses of the word! A Florida native, Ruka obtained his Masters in Dance after performing with the Miami City Ballet. Ruka went on to dance with various companies such Philadanco, Armitage Gone! Dance, and Limon Dance Company as well as serving as the dance captain with Royal Caribbean as he sailed the seas making a living as a professional dancer. Ruka now serves as the Director of the Berklee Commercial Dance Intensive at Boston Conservatory at Berklee. I not only spent the week teaching alongside Ruka last week at the Commercial dance Intensive, but I spent yesterday morning enjoying a cup of coffee and talking to Ruka about his life’s journey up to this point. I could truly talk to him for hours, and I feel like there’s a great deal of depth within the conversation. I look forward to the next time we can connect, and I hope you enjoy growing on the go today with Ruka White. SOCIAL: @sarahgrooms @onthegopodcast Ruka White: @rukasaar (Instagram)
Devin Buchanan, a professional dancer and group fitness instructor, is a long-time childhood friend of mine. We were fortunate enough to spend many days and nights dancing together throughout our childhood, and I've been inspired by every step of Devin's professional career along the way. We reminisce on our glory days as students at our hometown dance studio growing up, and we're able to talk about how those younger years shaped who we are as we stepped into our professional careers. After having toured with Giordano Dance Chicago for 9 years, Devin decided it was time for a new chapter in his life. Now in his 30's, Devin talks us through how he has successfully created a life he enjoys post performing all the while giving back to his community in the process. Devin is a true representation of hard work and ambition going a long way, and I hope you look forward to growing on the go with him through episode 30! Kelley Hoag is a behavioral health advisor and the founder of Root To Rise Health. Having been someone who started and enjoyed therapy sessions as early as first grade, Kelley always thought she’d grow up to be a psychologist or therapist. After later realizing she was fascinated with human behavior, she went on to receive a Master’s Degree in Applied Behavioral Analysis. With multiple bicoastal moves under her belt, Kelley found that schedules and strict work boundaries were something that didn't best serve her in every day life. Flexibility is key for her, and she’s able to live a life that is aligned best to her. Kelley and I dive in today to hear how she’s taken her own internal overwhelm and created a life that allows her personal peace as well as the ability to help others create a lifestyle that is best aligned to them. I believe that alignment begins internally at the root of our core. It often manifests within and translates into how we rise into the truest and most centered versions of ourselves. Danielle Pascente is the creator of the Danielle Pascente Training Guides where she runs her online business and has built her community. We met via an ambassador program and were able to connect through social media, and I’ve been enamored by her work ethic, transparency, and her drive to always bring her clients and community more each and every single day. Something I look for, especially within individuals in the fitness industry, is an honesty and transparency through their work. I’ve long admired Danielle's honesty in how tough it can be to run a business from being both the face of a company as well as the person running everything behind the scenes. It’s not always rainbows and butterflies as an entrepreneur, and she also shares her journey up to this point. Happy growing on the go with Danielle Pascente! Lauren Benbassat is the CMO and Co-Founder of Mēle Shake! Mēle Shake was built on the foundation that food should empower us through every day life. It’s common knowledge that many products on the market are currently packed with artificial ingredients and added sugars, and they lack the proper nutrients to help us through our day. So, Lauren and her co-founder Elise set out to change that! As a wellness enthusiast and former dancer, Lauren's taken her flexibility and carried it over into her entrepreneurial aspect of life. She’s paving the way with Méle Shake as she brings balanced meals in the form of a shake made from fruit, vegetable, and nut proteins. In today’s episode, the first-time mother talks us through her life and career up to this point, and she even spills the tea on some news within the company! We also talk through how her company is pivoting during a global pandemic as well as how she's able to give back to the frontline workers. Mēle Shake has partnered with Food Bank NYC to provide 5 meals for every dollar donated through their company. I absolutely love to see companies doing their part to give back to the community, and I made a donation shortly after this conversation. Emily Merrell, Founder of Six Degrees Society, worked in the fashion industry prior to quitting her 9-5 job back in 2014. She loved her gig, but she knew it wasn’t her end-all-be-all. Emily took life by the reins and made moves. Since then, she has created a network of women in various industries that are able to come together through networking events. Think less business and more casual all while making lifelong connections, and honestly, life long friends. Emily’s focus in the events is personal, professional, and lifestyle development. She has reinvented networking and made it a place where women can come together and connect on more than just what they do for a living. Whether you have a current full-time job, side hustle, or you’re working on passion project - there’s no reason not to step outside of your comfort zone.
