In this episode, we dive into the not-so-wonderful world of Youth With a Mission, aka YWAM. We chat with our pal (and Lindsay's sister), D.L. Mayfield about the history and horrors of the cult-like organization that began with one white guy's vision of young people sweeping the globe for Jesus. (Totally not creepy, right?) Fast forward a few decades and YWAM is one of the largest missions organizations on the planet, with 1100 locations in 180+ countries and over 18,000 (unpaid!) staff.It should come as no surprise to our listeners that YWAM is super problematic.. We get into all the cultiest aspects of this organization - from their Discipleship Training School to the forced trauma bonding that they call “Plumbline”. YWAM's entire model is recruiting young people - before their prefrontal cortexes are fully formed - and they make it VERY hard to leave. If you do manage to escape the cult of YWAM, chances are you'll be left with zero real-life skills with a side of religious trauma. We'll be back in a few weeks with a part 2 where we hear from friends and listeners about their about their firsthand encounters with YWAM. Since 2004, I've had the privilege of teaching Bible students from around the world who travel to the nation of Taiwan for a five-month Discipleship Training School held there twice a year. I get to be with them for one week of their enrollment and conduct a three-hour, daily lecture. Every day, before introducing new material, I review the previous day's curriculum and try to address any questions that developed overnight as these students processed the instruction they'd received. They're exposed to a lot of content during class, so I always look forward to this opportunity to repeat and revisit things I've taught that they didn't fully grasp. But even then, I know there's only so much they'll be able to absorb. That's partly due to the limits of my communication skills, but also, because the deepest form of learning happens as information gets applied, and there's really no shortcut to that process. It takes time. And when I conclude my week of teaching, I always find myself wishing there was a way I could stay with my students through their journey of application that only daily living can make possible. So, I love what Jesus told the Twelve about the process of their spiritual development in John 14:25-26. Having just emphasized the importance of not only hearing his words but living them, he reminded his disciples they would not be abandoned to go it alone. He reiterated his promise from verses 15-18 that the Father would send the Holy Spirit to remain with them, reinforce his instructions, and enable them to recall what they'd been taught as their lives provided the opportunity to apply his teaching. I believe you're reading this because you want to be a faithful, diligent, and engaged student of the red ink – the color that many versions of the New Testament use to display the words of Jesus. But as you've probably already discovered, there's a lot of it. And I know it may seem a bit overwhelming. You may even be tempted to feel shame or embarrassment about what you perceive to be your slowness to absorb and grasp the Lord's instructions. But don't surrender to that. The Holy Spirit is a wise and patient teacher working within our uniqueness, enabling us to learn and live in the life-altering words of the Savior. As believers, each of us has access to a divine tutor guiding us in understanding and assimilating the truths Jesus taught. And he's not limited to a week of lectures. The Holy Spirit is with us 24/7/365 to ensure we're growing in the knowledge we need and can apply it in every circumstance we encounter. And that's not even close to the full measure of the Spirit's mission in our lives. As we explore the next chapter of this Gospel, we'll discover a much more expansive description of his role. But for now, let's choose to soak in, with gratitude, the light of this one aspect of his ministry to us. With grateful and responsive hearts, let's commit to being good students.

I’ve been anticipating this interview with Corben Barber for a few weeks. He’s a recent graduate of a Discipleship Training School (DTS) with the Nashville base for Youth With a Mission (YWAM). After completing his DTS, Corben went on a two month trip to Uganda. Desiree Godin reports on her year at YWAM Discipleship Training School, with special focus on serving in Bangladesh.

This song came from the Holy Spirit to me, in November 2004, whilst I was driving to my piano teacher’s house. When I go to my teacher’s house, I sang this song and recorded it onto my mobile phone. I did not really understand the words, and I thought that they were a bit self-righteous “Look into my heart, and you will see the beauty of my risen Lord”. But a couple of days later I understood why the Lord had given me this song. Exactly two days later a Christian friend asked me why I prayed to Mary. When I tried to explain why, he didn’t understand. And then I spoke to another Christian friend - who I thought had come to understand my Catholic beliefs – about my initial conversation, but she agreed with my other friend. By giving me this song, the Lord had prepared me for the discussions that I had with those two friends. At this time I didn’t have any (practising) Catholic friends, so I felt quite alone, and I didn’t have anyone to discuss this with. They were two of my closest friends who did not understand a part of who I am, and that was hard for me to accept. I had grown up with Mary being like a mother to me, since I was a child. And for my friends not to accept Mary, it felt like they were not accepting me. And there was nothing that I could do about this except place the matter into the Lord’s hands. I could have read information in books and on the internet to come to a decision based on facts or who argues their view-point better, but I didn’t have to, because the Lord had placed His truth in my heart, and that’s all I needed to know at that stage. Christ lives in my heart, and all I want to do is follow Him and become more like Him. And Mary helps me to do this. My Catholic faith helps me to follow Christ. Our Lord placed me into a Catholic church and that is where He wants me to be. This is where our Lord first taught me to know Him and to love Him. I love my Catholic faith, and I also love my Christian friends - I am very grateful to them for teaching me how to pray to the Lord from the heart out loud, how to praise God through worship music and for helping me to develop my gifts from the Holy Spirit! (A couple of years later I learnt of the Sion Community in Brentwood and I attended the Discipleship Training School there one summer, where I studied Catholic Apologetics. This helped to deepen my understanding of my faith and also taught me how to defend my Catholic faith based on scripture and tradition. John 8: 32 “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free” Romans 10: 8-13 ‘ “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart”, for if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For one believes with the heart and so is justified, and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved. For the scripture says, “No one who believes in Him will be put to shame.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all, enriching all who call upon Him. For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” ’

Mark Anderson Directs DTS “Something historic is happening in Kansas City in 2012. Missions and prayer are coming together as one expression. The Discipleship Training School is a key part. I’m looking for 80 that want to be part of this training - the beginning of young army that will affect the nations. I call them the NEW BREED.” A new Discipleship Training School (DTS) begins Jan 2012 in Kansas City. Mark Anderson, the President of the Call2All Movement and YWAM leader, will be personally directing this school.
