Join the Deep-dive team as they discuss Towards an Institutional or Apostolic Vision by Alejandro Rodríguez, a long-time member of Youth With A Mission (YWAM) since 1989. The book is addressed to fellow "warriors" in YWAM, encouraging them to reflect on the organization's vision and remove practices that are commonplace in ministry but do not align with God's expectations.Become a paid subscriber to The Kingdom Reformation leader's community and download the book for free! Sign up at https://kingdomreformation.org The book argues that YWAM is best understood not as a Christian organization but as an "apostolic mission.". This distinction is important because it impacts how the organization and its members see themselves. Rodríguez warns against falling into a "Para-church" mentality, where YWAMers view themselves as separate from or superior to the local church. Instead, YWAM should be "part of something greater" -- namely, the global church. An apostolic vision, according to the sources, has several key characteristics:It involves recognizing that God has already been at work and that YWAM has "a glorious inheritance" to build on and pass on to future generations It requires seeing YWAM as a family, not just a hotel where people come and go as they please It prioritizes discipleship, which is "a lifestyle," not just a six-month or one-year programIt calls for "passing on a legacy," not just delegating tasksIt means impacting society beyond just church activities, striving to be "relevant in society"It involves dependence on God, not moneyOne of the biggest threats to this apostolic vision is the tendency to become "institutionalized". Rodríguez draws contrasts between an institutional and an apostolic approach to various aspects of YWAM life and ministry:Institutional vs. ApostolicChristian Organization vs. Apostolic Mission [4]Looking Out for One's Own Ministry vs. Being Part of Something Greater [7]Bases vs. Missionary Communities [17]Leaders vs. Pastors/Spiritual Parents [18]Training vs. Discipleship [19]Staff Members vs. Servants of God [20]Pastoral Care vs. Pastoral Life [21]Delegating a Task vs. Passing on a Legacy [22]Students vs. Disciples [23]Institutional Presence vs. A Mission that is Relevant in Society [14]Ministerial Activities vs. A Vision to Follow [24]Bound to Money vs. Depending on God [16]Rodríguez uses numerous examples and anecdotes to illustrate his points. These range from personal experiences in YWAM Argentina to biblical stories. Notably, he emphasizes the role of families in YWAM, highlighting the challenges and opportunities they face [25, 26]. He also stresses the importance of recognizing "openings, opportunities, and urgency" in missions [27]. By responding to these, YWAM can truly make a difference in society and be part of God's work of transforming nations. The sources conclude with a call to action, urging YWAMers to reflect on what they have read and to allow the Holy Spirit to renew their lives and ministries [28]. Drawing from his personal experiences with Youth With A Mission (YWAM) and stories of individuals like John, a cardiologist, and Mandisa, a former American Idol contestant, Dave illustrates how integrating discipleship into vocations can transform lives and communities. He challenges pastors and church leaders to support their congregants in their professional fields, fostering spiritual growth and societal impact. Buehring starts by introducing himself and thanking the participants, mentioning his background with Youth with a Mission (YWAM) and being discipled by its founder, Lauren Cunningham. He emphasizes the connection between disciple making and societal impact, outlining his early realization that discipleship extends beyond personal spiritual growth to influencing different vocations such as media, government, and business. Buehring presents his belief that a significant part of the United States' current issues stems from ignoring Jesus's commission to make disciples, particularly in key sectors like media and government. He suggests that society's transformation occurs not through yelling or solely praying but through influencing these sectors with godly principles.   He shares several stories of individuals he's discipled, highlighting the changes in their personal and professional lives. For instance, he talks about John, a cardiologist who learned to balance his immense professional skill with relational sensitivity. Another story involves Darren, who worked in the White House and learned to integrate the fear of the Lord into his operations, avoiding manipulation. Similarly, Sarah, an emerging artist, learned the value of servanthood in her music career. Buehring contrasts two mentalities within churches: convening (building-centric, program-oriented) versus mobilizing (impacting the community, relationship-oriented). He urges churches to adopt a culture of equipping and releasing members to serve in their vocations. Additionally, he provides a model for understanding discipleship stages, ranging from foundational discipling for new believers to vocational and leadership discipling for those influencing their respective fields. A significant part of his message is about integrating vocational disciple-making into church culture. This includes practical steps such as initiating conversations with vocational leaders in the church, creating vocational teams, and using Sunday sermons to discuss vocational applications of discipleship. Buehring also addresses the importance of redefining the metrics of church health beyond 'nickels and noses' (attendance and giving). Instead, he suggests evaluating the presence of God, community, disciple-making, and outreach within the church. He concludes by emphasizing the necessity of recognizing and supporting the unique callings of individuals within the church. This includes commissioning them into their vocational roles and ensuring the church is making a tangible impact on its community. Through various anecdotes and practical advice, Buehring underscores the pivotal role of discipleship in transforming both individual lives and broader societal structures. He encourages church leaders to view their congregants' vocational callings as integral to their ministry, thus fostering a more holistic approach to disciple-making.   Follow us at Discipleship.org!

With almost 30 years of ministry experience, Cal and Chrissy Krahn have often been drawn to those outside of the church walls. As urban workers with Mission Canada, based in Montreal, Quebec, they care for those around them who are lonely, hurting, or in need of a friend. This can be through involvement at the local food bank, sharing a meal or a coffee with someone, connecting newcomers to Canada with helpful resources, or simply giving a granola bar to a person who's hungry. In the words of Loren Cunningham, founder of Youth With A Mission (YWAM), "When you take up residence among them, you have an opportunity to do things for transforming that community and those people not only spiritually, but it will change their lives economically, socially, and educationally, and all the things that follow. YOU can make a difference in the world.” In a province where less than 1% of the population attend an evangelical service on a Sunday morning, and where many do not trust religion or have been hurt, Cal and Chrissy desire to embody "the Jesus way" by living their lives based on the example of Christ - full of generosity, hospitality, and love.

Join this week as we continue to look back on some of the most moving moments of 2023 on The Voice of the Martyrs Radio: Brother Maksud became a Christian as a young man but was afraid to tell his parents. He expected his father might disown him but was shocked at his father's response. Pastor Hanna remembers when he learned that a member of his church, Rami Ayyad, had been martyred. He says our faith won't be tested when everything is going fine, but in difficult times. After Sister Jane's husband was martyred in the Middle East, she prayed God would raise him from the dead. God didn't answer that prayer—but used the sacrifice to build his Kingdom. Susanne Geske suddenly received public attention after her husband was murdered in Turkey. She used the opportunity to echo Christ's words from the cross: “Father, forgive them.” Soon after Ronnie Smith was killed in Libya, his widow, Anita, had an opportunity to express God's forgiveness to his killers–in English and Arabic. (This interview with Anita was recorded as part of the Hearts of Fire Virtual Event. You can view the event—featuring four women who have suffered for their faith—online now for free.) When their parents were martyred serving the Lord in Uganda, Saul and Ezra Pett were angry with God. But in the years since God has brought healing and now the brothers are ministering in the very place where their parents were killed. As a young man, Brother Mansour made plans to burn down a church. Instead, he became a Christian trying to share God's Word with Iranians all over the world. Dr. Hormoz Shariat shares the story of a taxi driver in Iran who Jesus healed from cancer; today he shares his testimony with every passenger that gets into his taxi. John Samara shared a prayer request for his co-worker who'd been kidnapped by terrorists in the Middle East. God answered those prayers before his episode was aired on VOM Radio. Susi Childers told us the story of meeting Nigerian widows learning to forgive and pray for their persecutors. Listen to how Susi shared God's love for these women through jewelry. Brother Enfu told us how church leaders are still being trained in China, in spite of Communist Party restrictions, and gives us a specific way to pray. When VOM met Pastor Pan and members of the Mayflower Church, they had fled China and were seeking asylum in Thailand. Following the broadcast of that episode, church members were granted entry to the US. Loren Cunningham, founder of Youth With A Mission (YWAM), passed away on October 6, 2023.  News of his passing was particularly difficult for MANY former members (YWAMers) because he escaped a long-overdue reckoning to account for the years of exploitation, manipulation, and spiritual and financial abuse he designed and presided over throughout the decades of Youth With A Mission's history.  Tracey and Sharon share their own experiences with this systemic model of abuse and manipulation due to the close ties between Keith Green and Loren Cunningham and between Last Days Ministries and Youth With a Mission back in the early 1980's.  Loren Cunningham exploited both youth and nations with a program that functioned much more like a multi-level marketing scheme (MLM) than a true ministry. We share the dark side of his  ‘legacy' that you won't often hear because Loren Cunningham and other high-level YWAM leaders worked hard to remove and silence people and bury and hide important and heart-breaking stories of abuse and corruption.  References for this episode: Tyler Morning Telegraph Newspaper article  – History of Ministries in East Texashttps://tylerpaper.com/lifestyle/faith/christian-pioneers-make-east-texas-a-hub-for-worldwide-ministries/article_3bfb0beb-9f0a-578c-8236-8549236a5233.htmlThe Cross and the Switch Blade Movie Trailer starring Erik Estrada (who starred in the TV Show CHiPs in the 1970's)https://youtu.be/w4ANAyIQi8Y?si=YWzERVCizDfyYFdpThe Book used by YWAM to emphasize the principle – “Do not come against God's anointed.”The Tale of Three Kings– by Gene Edwards Sharon mentions visiting the home of the Anastasis Ship in 1982:  Loren Cunningham had a long-time vision of a ship ministry, which was finally realized in 1979. What do you do when you are diagnosed with Cancer at just 33?Tune in to today's episode of What's The Story where our special guest Becky Carr shares her story of being diagnosed with Breast Cancer as a young mum of two and her journey of discovering who God really is and finding His peace and presence in the toughest moments of life. Becky's story is one of faith, hope, and resilience in the face of adversity and is sure to encourage you in your own faith journey! Here's a summary of this week's story:Becky grew up in a Christian family and had experiences with God, but it was during her gap year with Youth With A Mission (YWAM) that she had a personal encounter with him. She later pursued a degree in theology and married her husband Jared soon after. They then moved to the US and made a life there.Becky was diagnosed with breast cancer at 33, which was shocking as it is not common for women to get it at such a young age. She had to undergo a mastectomy and breast reconstruction. However, three months later, she was rediagnosed with a different type of breast cancer that was very aggressive and had never before been treated. She had to undergo chemotherapy and radiation for almost a year. She talks about the intense challenges she faced during her breast cancer treatment, including missing her son's first day of school due to surgery and caring for her son during a medical emergency while undergoing her own treatment.Becky found support and comfort from her church community during her battle with breast cancer. She struggled with disappointment and anger towards God, but eventually found hope and peace in his presence and the belief that he walked with her through her struggles. She learned to value God's presence and promise to be with her through difficult times rather than just seeking a specific outcome or reward. She realized that the reward is ultimately Him, and that she needed an internal renewal more than an external healing. She found clarity and focused on her values and priorities after going through cancer, making significant changes in her life, including creating margin and focusing on what matters to her, and making the most of the time she has now.ABOUT BECKY:Becky Carr is a Brit living in the USA with her husband Jared and 2 littles, Gabe (8) & Ayla (5). She attends the Mile High Vineyard church near Denver and is an elder there. She also works for Vineyard USA as the Executive Assistant to the National Director. She is a recent breast cancer survivor, enthusiastic tea drinker, and loves to snowboard and hike in Colorado's Rocky Mountains where she calls home.

Henry Jarju joins host Steve Teel on this edition of Very Bold Radio. Be inspired every Saturday by difference-makers on Very Bold Radio and Podcast. Henry Jarju Part 4 Steve and David Teel both introduce Part 4 talking about how Henry's setbacks, experiences, and challenges parallel the apostle Paul's many experiences. Henry's reading of the Bible and Acts has a depth of understanding that most of us could not fathom. 0:00-8:00Back to the Mediterranean Sea and the sinking boat where Henry and other refugees think this is the end. Help finally arrives as the refugees get to international waters and a rescue team arrives on jet skis with life jackets. It takes a full day once they are on the big rescue boat to make it to Italy. 8:00-17:00 Arriving in Italy … finally! July to November he remains in Italy. His mom on the phone tells Henry that before he passed, his dad had declared that Henry would make it to Italy. This affirmation lifted his heart. Italy does not seem to be the promised land he had hoped. He determined to leave Italy although he does not have proper documents to go on. He tries to cross Switzerland but is detained and sent back to Italy. There he is soon hospitalized for 2 months with tuberculosis. Although this is challenging Henry is then granted humanitarian documents giving him accessible documents to travel to other countries he did not previously have. 17:00-27:00Henry learned Italian at that time in school. David asks Henry to share how many languages he is fluent in (3 different Gambian languages, plus French, Arabic, Italian, Dutch, English = 8!)Steve points out the incredible mind Henry has. During this time Henry plays semi-professional football (soccer) and goes to school. A childhood friend of his is living in Italy and they decide to leave Italy together. However his friend does not have the documents to travel. The friend suggests they should go to The Netherlands. They are stopped from entering France by the police and given to Italian authorities. The Italians encourage them to try again and give them a better strategy. They try that very day in the snow and succeed. They find a Red Cross center that provides them a place to stay for a few days before sending them to The Netherlands. Henry lives on the streets while his friend seeks asylum there. He finds food at a church they provides meals for the homeless. By God's providence Henry meets a woman at the church who learns Henry was educated as a teacher and is good working with children.   27:00-38:00 Henry begins to help this angel-woman on Mondays, telling kids stories, doing music with them and time on the playground. This friend and soon to be benefactor asks Henry what would you like to do in The Netherlands? He says he would like to be a missionary, even though he is unsure what that may even entail. Henry feels at this moment that he wants to know God in a committed Christian community. This woman finds out about Discipleship Training School (DTS) at Youth With A Mission (YWAM) in Amsterdam. He was still living on the street at this time but this woman helps him find a hostel to live in instead. Determined to go to this school Henry finds out the fee to learn about God seems out of reach (2000 Euros). He knows he cannot pay this fee. This woman and her husband decide to sponsor Henry's YWAM DTS. This was in January 2020.   38:00-46:00 In closing this penultimate episode, David Teel explains the basic mission and purpose of YWAM and its global presence. 46:00-50:00See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

About Our Guest: Coni Gelep Beck is an Ordained minister with the Assemblies of God and has faithfully served the Lord for more than 37 years. In addition to serving in leadership at her local church for many years, Coni served as a full-time missionary with Youth With A Mission (YWAM) for eleven years.  While serving, she had the opportunity to help lead teams and preach in more than a dozen nations.   Coni grew up with an abusive step father, who tormented her mother, two sisters and her for 14 years.  Her response to the abuse was to turn to drug and alcohol use.  Living at times in her car and on the streets to avoid arrest, Coni was sexually assaulted several times and lived in fear for her life.     At 21, after nearly 7 years of running from Jesus, Coni committed her life to the Lord, only to find out a few weeks later, that she was half way through a pregnancy. These years taught her how to trust in the goodness and Fatherhood of God and depend on Him for supernatural provision.   Coni now serves as the Pastor at a local men's homeless shelter and continues to disciple the broken and downtrodden.  Her heart is to see the captives set free and build the Kingdom of God!   Facebook: Harbor House Coni Beck

Danny Lehmann is a leader in Youth With A Mission (YWAM), an international missions and church planting thrust that has had a tremendous world-wide Kingdom impact. In this podcast, Danny will be talking with us on the subject of vision. Specifically, we’ll be talking about a Biblical pattern for seeing and receiving God’s vision for our lives and ministries. Danny is keen on the subject of church life as well, having served for many years with Pastor Bill Stonebraker at Calvary Chapel Honolulu. YWAM has been, from its inception, big on hearing God's voice, obeying His voice, and persevering through the word commanded by that voice. YWAM founder Loren Cunningham has modeled that approach, and YWAMers have sought to emulate his pattern. Danny Lehmann has written four books on evangelism: Go! The Excitement of Personal Evangelism, For the Gospel’s Sake, Bringin’ Em Back Alive, and Beautiful Feet. He has also written on the subject of spiritual discipline: Before You Hit the Wall, as well as STOKED! Firing Up Your Passion for God. His latest book is entitled The Next Big Thing: How Little Choices Can Make a Big Impact. Danny lives in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, with his wife Linda and now serves as part of the leadership team for YWAM Kona. NOTES from Danny's 5 Points about asking for, receiving, and implementing the vision the Lord gives us: 1) The PRAYER FOR THE VISION. Nehemiah 1:1-10 … his vision was initiated by God and prayed through by Nehemiah. Also Habakkuk 1:2-4; 12-17 … he cried out to God because of the injustice in the land and the LORD’s seeming indifference to it all. 2) THE POSTURE FOR RECEIVING THE VISION. (we must do the possible) Habakkuk 2:1 I will stand my watch and set myself on the rampart, and watch to see what He will say to me, and what I will answer when I am corrected. 3) THE PROPHETIC WORD THE DETAILS OF THE VISION. Habakkuk 2:2 “Write the vision and make it plain upon tablets that he that reads it may run.” 4) FOR THE PROLIFERATION OF THE VISION. The vision must cast so that others may run with it. Habakkuk 2:2-3 Then the Lord answered me and said: “Write the vision and make it plain on tablets, that he may run who reads it. For the vision is yet for an appointed time; but at the end it will speak, and it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it; because it will surely come, It will not tarry. 5) PERSEVERANCE TO OBEY THE VISION. Often there is a “death of a vision,” so that God’s will and word can be resurrected.

Mitch and Juliette Anderson are two of the most filled-with-faith followers of Jesus that I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. They have successfully raised five children, all now young adults, who are also wonderful people. Their youngest child is Katrina, the subject of this episode's amazing story. Katrina is a young woman with special needs--she was born with Down Syndrome. Down Syndrome is a condition wherein a person has an extra chromosome. Chromosomes are small "packages" of genes in our bodies and they determine how we form during pregnancy and how we then function as we grow both in the womb and after birth. Down Syndrome babies have an extra chromosome. This additional genetic material alters the course of the baby's development and causes characteristics associated with Down Syndrome. For several decades Mitch and Juliette have been leaders in the Christian organization, Youth With A Mission (YWAM). Youth With A Mission is a global movement of Jesus followers from many cultures, age groups, and Christian traditions, dedicated to serving Jesus throughout the world. One of the joys those who have participated in YWAM speak of is the ability to work with people from all over the world. Mitch and Juliette are originally from California, but have lived on the YWAM base in Pichilemu, Chile, in South America, that they founded in the early 1990s. They base trains and disciples thousands of Christians each year. As you'll hear in this episode, Mitch and Juliette are excellent surfers (one their daughters actuall surfs on the international pro circuit). This story is about Katrina who, despite her challenges, is a competent surfer and excellent swimmer. It was a Good Friday and Juliette had taken her daughter out to surf. Unexpectedly, Katrina was sucked into a powerful rip current and was pulled into a set of massive, dangerous waves well offshore. Miraculously, Katrina survived. And as you'll hear, her survival involved a unusual pod of dolphins and two mysterious men in white robes. More on the Anderson's and their YWAM base in Pichelimu is found at ywampichilemu.com. Raised in the Russian culture and language, he continued his education at the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned his BS in electrical engineering and material science. Peter joined Youth With A Mission (YWAM) in 1976, and has been able to cross barriers throughout the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe with his ministry. Peter has traveled and ministered in over seventy-five countries across Asia, South America, Australia, and throughout Eastern and Western Europe. Currently he is the North American Director for YWAM. He and his wife Luba have four children and live in Jefferson, Oregon. He has authored a book, Out of the Far Corners, recounting the story of his father’s emigration from Russia. Vanya Iliyn’s formative years were spent on the move, traveling the far corners of the world—Russia, Central China, and the Americas—amid seemingly impossible hardships. His journey crossed the landscape of his heart as well. Orphaned and alone, Vanya could look only to God for protection, guidance, and grace. His remarkable story speaks to the power and majesty of God.
