In the season finale of Season 1 of Buddy Check, I interviewed my ex-boyfriend who taught me to climb and with whom I lived in that slide-in Lance camper on the back of our red 1992 Chevy pick-up truck. I asked him the questions I asked of others this season. Questions like - why did you originally want me to learn to climb, was it difficult for you to always have to be the leader in our climbing, and what does climbing mean to you? We close out the season the way we started - back to heterosexual romantic relationship dynamics and their overlap with our climbing ones. Back to why I started down this road in the first place.
Episode 2 of Buddy Check looks at two ways of thinking differently about navigating our climbing partnerships that overlap with our romantic ones. First, what can we learn from queer partnerships, where traditional gender norms are already subverted to some extent? And then, a conversation with a couples counselor about better communication strategies to increase equity in heterosexual romantic climbing partnerships in order to acknowledge and address the tendency to limit ourselves within traditional gender roles.Resources:@frontrangequeerclimbers on InstagramDorian Evers, therapist based in Boulder, CO: http://www.cultivategrowththerapy.com/

In the first episode of season 1 of Buddy Check, Freddie tells her story of how she first learned to climb. Then, we dive into the preliminary findings from Céline Hequet's PhD research on the climbing community. Céline is a sociology PhD student at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. She is observing and interviewing rock climbers who identify as men about their experience with mentorship and mentoring others, their romantic relationships within climbing, and about how they perceive and understand their own masculinity. Her research will help to explain a pattern we're seeing in climbing today, where many more women are participating in the sport and many attribute at least part of their mentorship to a heterosexual, romantic relationship.Resources:Donnelly, Peter Alexander, "The Subculture and Public Image of Climbers” (1980). Pelle Arthur/ SGTInstagram: @the_bougie_soldierTiktok: pelleinthegymHi! I'm Pelle and I'm a Sergeant in the army. I'm a 68C (practical nurse). I'm from Juneau, Alaska and make frequent visits back to see family. I have a variety of interests but here's my top three: staying fit, travel and anime! I've been to over 20 countries thanks to the military and have been incredibly lucky during my contract. I'm third generation Army and have been in myself for 5 years now! I hope to continue my education and become either a nurse practitioner or physician. Being in the medical field I am acutely aware of importance of mental health and how it's treated in the military. I hope by sharing a little bit about my own background I can contribute to a more constructive environment for others with trauma or other issues that are either currently serving or retired.Always do a buddy check!!Buddy Check numbers800-273-8255 - Suicide HotlineGermany 08001810771Belgium 02 648 40 14Italy 800860022Poland 5270000Korea 080-8555-118800-931-2237 - Eating Disorder Hotline800-656-4673 - National Assault Hotline800-222-1222 - Poison Control Hotline800-799-7233 - National Domestic Violence Hotline877-565-8860 - Transgender Suicide Hotline202-498-4009 - SHARP Crisis LineText 838255 (Veterans Crisis Hotline)Text HOME to 741741Or you can download the WeCare app for contact and resources. other resources:www.militaryonesource.milwww.ptsd.va.gov/under...NCPTSDwww.mentalhealth.gov/get-help/veteranshttps://linktr.ee/Extraduty--- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/joushua-maria7/messageSupport this podcast: https://anchor.fm/joushua-maria7/supportSupport the show

Left to Right: Eric Peterson of Project Headspace & Timing, Jake LaMore, host of Kankakee Podcast. On Saturday, August 14th, 2021, we recorded our very first live episode of Kankakee Podcast at Heroes, Hogs, & Hot Rods in Manteno, IL. Considering this was the first time I had ever done something like this, I think it went well! If you were one of the people that attended, thank you fro coming! Heroes, Hogs, & Hot Rods is an event put on by the non-profit organization, Project Headspace & Timing, which assists veterans with finding the mental health services they need in Kankakee County. You may already know this since the group's founder, Eric Peterson, was the guest on the first episode of Kankakee Podcast. Not only does this live episode include the return of Eric, but it also contains conversations with Mike Totten, a veteran who has benefited from Project Headspace & Timing's services, and Kelly Frey, president of Buddy Check 22. Special thanks to our sponsors for helping make this live episode happen! Much Love, Jake LaMore
