Drawing from his personal experiences with Youth With A Mission (YWAM) and stories of individuals like John, a cardiologist, and Mandisa, a former American Idol contestant, Dave illustrates how integrating discipleship into vocations can transform lives and communities. He challenges pastors and church leaders to support their congregants in their professional fields, fostering spiritual growth and societal impact. Practical steps and considerations for fostering a disciple-making culture within churches are also explored. Buehring starts by introducing himself and thanking the participants, mentioning his background with Youth with a Mission (YWAM) and being discipled by its founder, Lauren Cunningham. He emphasizes the connection between disciple making and societal impact, outlining his early realization that discipleship extends beyond personal spiritual growth to influencing different vocations such as media, government, and business. Buehring presents his belief that a significant part of the United States' current issues stems from ignoring Jesus's commission to make disciples, particularly in key sectors like media and government. He suggests that society's transformation occurs not through yelling or solely praying but through influencing these sectors with godly principles. He shares several stories of individuals he's discipled, highlighting the changes in their personal and professional lives. For instance, he talks about John, a cardiologist who learned to balance his immense professional skill with relational sensitivity. Another story involves Darren, who worked in the White House and learned to integrate the fear of the Lord into his operations, avoiding manipulation. Similarly, Sarah, an emerging artist, learned the value of servanthood in her music career. Buehring contrasts two mentalities within churches: convening (building-centric, program-oriented) versus mobilizing (impacting the community, relationship-oriented). He urges churches to adopt a culture of equipping and releasing members to serve in their vocations. Additionally, he provides a model for understanding discipleship stages, ranging from foundational discipling for new believers to vocational and leadership discipling for those influencing their respective fields. A significant part of his message is about integrating vocational disciple-making into church culture. This includes practical steps such as initiating conversations with vocational leaders in the church, creating vocational teams, and using Sunday sermons to discuss vocational applications of discipleship. Buehring also addresses the importance of redefining the metrics of church health beyond 'nickels and noses' (attendance and giving). Instead, he suggests evaluating the presence of God, community, disciple-making, and outreach within the church. He concludes by emphasizing the necessity of recognizing and supporting the unique callings of individuals within the church. This includes commissioning them into their vocational roles and ensuring the church is making a tangible impact on its community. Through various anecdotes and practical advice, Buehring underscores the pivotal role of discipleship in transforming both individual lives and broader societal structures. He encourages church leaders to view their congregants' vocational callings as integral to their ministry, thus fostering a more holistic approach to disciple-making. Follow us at Discipleship.org!

Dave Buehring shares his journey from limited teaching on the Holy Spirit in a Lutheran upbringing to deeper understanding through Youth with a Mission (YWAM). He highlights the Holy Spirit's crucial role in discipleship for personal growth and teaching others. The discussion covers listening to the Holy Spirit in daily life and prayer, the importance of immediate obedience, and avoiding grieving or quenching the Spirit. Practical examples, like interactions with Mandisa, illustrate discipling in various vocations and the transformative power of the Holy Spirit. Dave Buehring begins by sharing his journey from growing up Lutheran in Minnesota, where he received little teaching about the Holy Spirit, to joining Youth with a Mission (YWAM) and learning from its founder, Lauren Cunningham. This experience gave him a fresh understanding of the Holy Spirit as the third person of the Trinity. Emphasizing the Holy Spirit's central role in his 40 years of disciple-making, Dave describes the Spirit as a partner and transformer in spiritual growth. He highlights the importance of helping people recognize the Holy Spirit's presence and follow His lead, especially when feeling stuck. The speaker shares a story about guiding Mandisa, a disciple for 22 years, in learning to wait on the Lord and follow the Holy Spirit's guidance. He discusses the broader impact of discipleship, which extends beyond church walls to vocations like government, arts, business, media, and education, integrating faith into professional lives to make a societal impact. Throughout today's episode, practical aspects of discipling others by paying attention to the Holy Spirit's work are emphasized. Dave recounts two biblical stories: Philip and the Ethiopian Eunuch (Acts 8:26-40): An angel instructs Philip to go to a desert road where he meets an Ethiopian official reading Isaiah. Prompted by the Holy Spirit, Philip explains the Scriptures and baptizes the eunuch, highlighting the importance of being sensitive to the Spirit's guidance. Peter and Cornelius (Acts 10): Peter receives a vision while praying, leading him to visit Cornelius, a Gentile centurion. Despite initial hesitation, Peter obeys the Holy Spirit, shares the Gospel, and Cornelius and his household convert, underscoring the importance of prayerful listening and immediate obedience. The speaker draws three key observations from these stories: Listening on the Way vs. Listening While Praying: Philip's encounter shows the need to be attentive to the Holy Spirit during daily activities, while Peter's experience highlights the importance of waiting on the Lord in prayer. Immediate Obedience: Both Philip and Peter obey the Holy Spirit without hesitation, crucial for effective disciple-making. God's Knowledge of Our Gifts: The Holy Spirit knows each believer's gifts and positions them for Kingdom purposes. The episode also discusses grieving and quenching the Holy Spirit: Grieving the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:30): This occurs when the Holy Spirit says "no," but we proceed to say "yes," causing grief. It's often related to unloving conduct and relational sins. Quenching the Holy Spirit (1 Thessalonians 5:19-20): This happens when the Holy Spirit says "yes," but we say "no," stifling divine influence. It involves resisting promptings towards joy, prayer, thankfulness, and prophecy. Dave gives practical advice for discerning the Holy Spirit's voice in disciple-making including asking clarifying questions and listening attentively to the person being discipled. Communal discernment and confirmation from spiritual leaders are also emphasized. In conclusion, the episode calls for a balanced approach to disciple-making that integrates both the Word of God and the active leading of the Holy Spirit. The speaker encourages listeners to cultivate a life of continuous listening and immediate obedience, trusting that the Holy Spirit will lead both them and their disciples into deeper transformation and effective witness in their vocations and communities. Overall, this episode offers a rich and practical exploration of partnering with the Holy Spirit in making disciples who are knowledgeable in Scripture and sensitive to the Spirit's guidance in all areas of life. On today's show, we chat with two - time guest, Jordan St. Cyr! It was when Jordan St. Cyr was a teen and served with Youth With a Mission (YWAM) that he found the inspiration to pursue music as a career. He eventually released an EP, and in the years that have followed, he has released more music and has received numerous life-changing opportunities to work alongside many talented songwriters, producers, and artists, all of whom have encouraged him along his journey. From playing numerous events of all sizes and meeting people from many different walks of life, humanity's deep desire for meaningful connection has been revealed to him and the hope to find something more vibrant than our current reality. St. Cyr dropped his first full-length self-titled album in the spring of 2022 with Seattle-based label, BEC Recordings. The project features the chart-climbing radio hits "Fires" and "Weary Traveler" - both of which offer a pursuit of hope, even in our darkest moments, to know that God gives us stories to share and encourage one another through our fires and weary travels, to give us strength in the midst of them. And it was “Fires” that quickly put St. Cyr on the map, hitting the airwaves on major networks and stations for nearly 18 months straight and reaching millions weekly and going top 5. “Weary Traveler” followed, which also became his first No. 1 hit single, taking the top spot on all radio charts. 2022 continued to be an astounding year for St. Cyr. While he continues to create music and tour, Jordan St. Cyr is really just getting started. We have to build our life on something, if we don't we will fall. Jordan St. Cyr's sophomore album, My Foundation, resonates with those building their foundation on solid rock. He speaks through personal experiences that touch the hearts of all who have weathered storms. “The idea of my foundation has never been physical,” Jordan explains. “It's always been this understanding of God as my heavenly Father; being the foundation on which I build my life on and the home I get to participate in building with Him for my wife and kids.” With all that Jordan has experienced the last few years, he praises the Lord for the outcome, “I now rejoice for all the gifts He gave us through the process.” 'My Foundation' is out today! jordanstcyr.com @jordanstcyr christianmusicguys.com @christianmusicguys --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/christianmusicguys/message

When Jeff Woodke said those words, he didn't know that he would be taken hostage from his home in Niger in 2016. But Woodke, a long-term relief and gospel worker in West Africa, did know there were risks. Risk wasn't such a big issue in the early years of the ministry of Jeff and his wife, Els, in Niger with Youth With a Mission (YWAM). They worked in church planting, discipleship, and evangelism among the Wodaabe people. Niger was an open country, with churches throughout. What Christian persecution there was came from family members or neighbors who opposed following Jesus. However, over time the rise of Salafist Islam changed Niger—and increased their risk. Listen as Jeff recalls the night he was kidnapped and how the image of orange flashes from the guns which killed his guards are seared into his memory. Naked and bloody, Jeff was forced into the back seat of a truck and driven away, not knowing who his captors were or how long his captivity might last. Over the years, Jeff was transferred into the custody of multiple terror groups, beaten and mistreated. As a Christian who refused to embrace Islam, Jeff was seen as an animal. Some of his guards were only 12 years old. Yet Jeff says renouncing his faith in Christ and becoming a Muslim to get better treatment was never an option. Jeff shares what helped him during those difficult days and how he knew the Lord was with him. Listen as he tells why forgiveness was key and how he took opportunity daily to express it to his captors. Please pray for Jeff and Els as they continue to recover from the more than six years of Jeff's captivity and come back next week as Jeff continues to share more of his experience being a hostage and his eventual release and freedom.

Paul Dangtoumda, a part of the global eldership counsel for Youth With a Mission (YWAM) and the leader for YWAM's work in Nigeria, comes from a family with a history of Christian persecution. In fact, he bears the scar of persecution his parents faced even before he was born. Listen as he shares the amazing testimony of God's protection over him and his parents—and how their example inspires his ministry even today. Hear how Paul began working in Nigeria and how today he and YWAM are helping widows—Women of Honor—to persevere in life and faith despite the loss of their husbands. “We had to teach the [women] how to go to the cross,” he says. “Because when they realize that it is God who can save them, then this is the beginning of true counseling.” Paul will also share about a Bible translation effort called Oral Mother Tongue, an effort that YWAM founder Loren Cunningham focused on in the final days of his earthly life. Listen as Paul describes the process from start to finish—and the reaction of people hearing the Bible in their own language for the first time. Paul will suggest ways listeners can pray for this translation effort.
“Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.” Loren Cunningham, with his wife Darlene, founded Youth With a Mission (YWAM) in 1960 with a vision to equip and send young people out all over the world to fulfill this God-given command to go and proclaim. Loren passionately continued God's work even into his final days on earth, preaching and discipling even with lung cancer. When he died last October, he left an amazing, inspired legacy for YWAM. Paul Childers, a long time YWAM worker and member of the ministry's global eldership team, returns to VOM Radio this week to share how Loren's legacy is propelling YWAM forward, especially with an emphasis on providing God's Word to as many as possible through a Bible translation effort called Oral Mother Tongue. He will share the process to rapidly translate the Bible, through spoken word, into many more languages using the local people to help with the process. Paul, founder of Word by Heart, shares the amazing work of Oral Mother Tongue and how they translated the entire New Testament for 30 languages in six months! Even local non-Christians are included in this work, excited by the stories they are helping to translate and the effort to maintain their heart languages. Even a Hindu priest suggested, “The government needs to pay for this translation work! It's so important to encapsulate our language going forward.” The process also adds credibility to the work in each community as people want to listen to a project to which their family members and friends contributed. Please also pray for YWAM in this season of transition as they continue Loren's legacy impacting the world for Christ and his kingdom.

Leah Hatefi, wife to Aaron and mother of Evelie and Noah, is a vocational missionary with Youth With a Mission (YWAM). YWAM equips young adults to go into all nations and make disciples of all peoples groups. After leading many teams to other countries, sharing the Gospel, and serving with various long-term mercy-ministry projects, Leah felt Jesus asking her to return to the US and answer the call to serve within the local church. After returning, she was invited to help establish a YWAM School of Biblical Studies in Atlanta. Leah became part of the leadership team to launch that school in 2022. Her prayer is that their students discover the truth of God's word and deepen their understanding through the love of the Holy Spirit while they study, then take what they learn into the world so that others may know God through their life example. In this final episode of the For God So Loved the World Podcast Series, I chat with Leah about being a vocational missionary and how raising young children has influenced how she (very gracefully in my opinion) integrates motherhood into her work. From the mid 1960s to early 2000s, Cambodia experienced war and political turmoil, the legacy of which still impacts its people. But God is changing a country that was known for killing to be known for His life-giving power, and now for training and sending out workers to restricted nations all over southeast Asia—nations where Christian persecution is common. Garth and Caroline serve in a YWAM training center in Cambodia focused on training local leaders to serve in their own country and into surrounding nations. Listen to hear about their work, and about how God is opening doors to impact people around them—even Buddhist monks. Garth and Caroline will also describe how God led them to serve full time with YWAM and how they train gospel workers who may face persecution for their witness. Garth tells the story of a close friend's time in jail for his Christian faith—and the surprising reason for his release! They will help listeners pray for Cambodia and describe how it boosts their faith to hear the stories of persecuted Christians and their faithfulness to Jesus.
There's no question that walking through something as painful as watching your child suffer will cause you to question your faith in God. Jordan St. Cyr, Canadian Worship Leader and artist, tells us about his daughter, Emory, and the health trials she's encountered since joining us here on this earth.Jordan's testimony is actually one of encouragement for all of us who have or are currently walking through a time of testing. He addresses that difficult time frame right between the blessing or miracle and when we're just believing in faith for that miracle. It's a beautiful place to exist, but it can cause us to fall away or draw closer to our Creator.Matthew 22:37-40 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'[c] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.'[d] 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”- - - - - - Sponsor InformationWorship Leader Institutehttps://www.worshipleaderinstitute.com/Additional Linkshttps://www.jordanstcyr.com/https://www.instagram.com/worshipleader/https://worshipleader.com/all-podcasts/https://authenticmedia.company/https://worshipleader.com/all-podcasts/our-host/- - - - - - Please subscribe to our social channels for more information and great content surrounding building a lifestyle of worship. It was when Jordan St. Cyr served with Youth With a Mission (YWAM) as a teen that he found the inspiration to pursue music as a career. He eventually released an EP, and in the years that have followed, he has received numerous and life-changing opportunities to work alongside so many talented songwriters, producers, and artists, all who have encouraged him along his journey. From playing numerous events of all sizes and meeting people from many different walks of life, humanity's deep desire for meaningful connection has been revealed to him and the hope to find something more vibrant than our current reality. Now in 2022, after releasing more music along the way, Jordan St. Cyr has debuted his first full-length album with Seattle-based label BEC Recordings - a self-titled ten-song project that was released on March 4th.

Join Lauren on this episode as she sits down in the studio with Mercy Kouri. Mercy grew up in Canada and forsook the standard college route, opting instead to attend Discipleship Training School (DTS) through an organization called Youth with a Mission (YWAM). This would take her to New Zealand where she met her now-husband, Aaron Kouri. Mercy discusses how learning to make disciples was an answered prayer for Aaron and her as they embarked on their new married life together. She shares the struggles of wanting to be savior to everyone around her, as well as the difficulties of discipling in a pandemic. Mercy is quiet, yet speaks with boldness, and you'll be glad you listened. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/great-awakening-by-b2g/message
Eric Demeter and I talk about Christian dating on this episode of the podcast. He clarifies that there isn't one right way to date as a Christian-- the Bible isn't clear about it-- but there are some wrong ways. He encourages us to be curious about other believers and date for the purpose of marriage. A little bit about the guest: Eric is a relationship and conflict resolution specialist with advanced studies in mediation, peacemaking and negotiation from the Korbel School of International Studies at the University of Denver and Peacemaker Ministries. He is currently a missionary with Youth With a Mission (YWAM) based in Athens, Greece where he disciples young people from the Middle East, and teaches conflict resolution and healthy relationships to YWAM staff and missionary students. His experiences growing up listening to heavy metal, working alongside ex-convicts, and being raised in the Roman Catholic tradition give him the ability to connect well with people of diverse belief systems. He considers every reader a friend and challenges everyone to become more like Christ in everything they do. Support the podcast through Patreon Join our mailing list Check out our website Resources: How Should a Christian Date? by Eric Demeter Eric is reading Culture Making by Andy Crouch. He is being refreshed by time with friends in Colorado. Noteworthy quotes: “Don't date someone you have to disciple.” 15:27 “God gives us a big yard to date and you just have to find what works for you.” 22:26 “God cares.” 26:31 Questions for consideration: If you're in a dating relationship, are you seeking the counsel of others? If not, who are a few people who you can invite into your relationship?

He also served for years as a missionary with Youth With a Mission (YWAM), going from desperate places like Colombia to Cambodia to… California! Danica grew up in Bowral, NSW. She loved God, but grew up feeling angry towards Him for various reasons. After finishing uni, she decided to go on a missions' trip to Mazatlan, Mexico, with Youth With a Mission (YWAM) for five months. Little did she know that she would put down roots there, find her husband and create a family with two sweet boys, while making it their mission to spread the Gospel to the city of Mazatlan and beyond. Seven years in, she sits down to chat with me about her change of heart toward God, how God asked her to give up her life of comfort and how evangelism is so much more simple than we make it out to be. Paul and Susi Childers have spent more than two decades working to spread the gospel to the nations at Youth With a Mission (YWAM). Listen as Susi shares how God called her from a career in photography to go as a missionary—and how He turned her camera into a bridge-building tool for sharing the gospel. “Don’t think because you don’t have a typical ‘Christian’ job that you can’t be used [in missions],” she says. Susi started out by committing to serve for one year, a commitment that has now been renewed for 24 years! She will offer advice if you sense God may be asking you to get involved in spreading the gospel to the world. Paul and Susi will also tell us how they think about risk—for themselves and for each other—and how they involve their children in sending and praying as they answer God’s call to go into all the world.

The one where we talk with Mary Somers-Harris about disability in the church, charismatic evangelicalism, and the abuse problem at Youth with a Mission (YWAM).Mary shares about her experience growing up as a missionary kid in YWAM Japan, her experience at YWAM’s discipleship training school (DTS) and the ableist and spiritual abuse she experienced here. YWAM is a major missions organization with 25,000 young people participating each year globally. Sadly, abuse is rampant at YWAM schools all over the world and as an institution has not addressed the problem or come up with prevention guidelines. If you’ve experienced abuse at YWAM, know that you’re not alone and that there are supportive resources available. On Facebook, you can join the private group “Spiritual Abuse in YWAM”. Paul felt God speaking to him, and the message was clear: “Get off this bus. Right now!” Paul obeyed, and his obedience saved his life. Jesus told His followers to deny themselves, take up their cross and follow Him. God still calls His children to the uncomfortable, and even the dangerous. Paul, who leads the work of Youth With a Mission (YWAM) in Nigeria, shares this week on VOM Radio how God called him to minister in a difficult and dangerous part of Nigeria—a place where Christian persecution is a constant reality. He’ll also share how God protected him as he answered God’s call—including getting him off of that bus. Today, many of Paul’s coworkers in gospel work are former radical Muslim persecutors of Christians miraculously transformed by the love of Jesus. We’ll also hear from Paul Childers, who leads YWAM’s University of the Nations in Kona, Hawaii. Childers offers an encouraging update on what God is doing around the world from his front-row seat to missions work in many nations. He’ll talk about a move of God that’s raising up a generation of people willing to truly take up their cross and follow God’s call to any place on earth, no matter how difficult or dangerous. Paul Childers has been a guest before on VOM Radio. You can hear that interview here. You can also listen to our conversation with Loren Cunningham, the founder of YWAM.
Hey folks! We’ve got a special episode today where Mack Donahue is talking about his six month trip to Australia. Mack went on a trip with Youth With a Mission (YWAM) to learn how to be a disciple of Christ’s love and to put those skills to the test with the people who need it most. Notes: At 37:40, Mack referred to Matthew 9:37b, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few.” (NKJV). Tyler is an idiot who’s obsessed with John and mistook the verse that Mack referenced for John 4:35b, “Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest!” (NKJV)Mekane Yesus means “Place of Jesus.” Mack already knew that. Oops.YWAM advertises over 1,200 bases worldwide, on their site, https://ywam.orgWe are not sponsored by Google Translate, but it if we were, that would be really cool *suggestive eyebrow gestures*. We also are not affiliated with YWAM aside from Mack’s experience with them, but both of us (Mack and Tyler) would recommend giving them attention if you are looking into going on a missions trip and doing the Lord’s work.$1 USD = ~29.50 Ethiopian Birr as of the editing of this episode. We hope you enjoyed listening to this episode, and we especially hope that hearing Mack’s testimony of his mission has inspired you to be a steward of the Gospel as well. Obeying Jesus’ commands is important if you want to be His disciple. One of those is to go into all the world and share the Good News. Bevin Ginder joins the show to talk about mobilization and its role in the Great Commission. For him, whenever he is working with other believers, he is discipling. Growing up on the mission field, Bevin felt called to be a mobilizer through a dream, a concert, and a class. Now, he and his wife live in Cambodia and serve as leaders with Youth With a Mission (YWAM). His hope is to see churches learn how to send out missionaries and join in God’s work all over the world. Is anyone outside the reach of God’s grace? Listen this week to hear stories of radical militants in Nigeria meeting Jesus and committing their lives to His service—even at great cost. Paul Childers leads The University of the Nations for Youth With a Mission (YWAM). He’s trained Christians all over the world to tell the gospel story of Jesus’ love, and reminds us that Jesus’ gospel “still works” to change peoples’ hearts. YWAM workers are seeing that in Nigeria—literally seeing thousands of former militants now following Christ. Paul will also tell about finding the courage to go to hard places to share Jesus’ love and encourage His followers. Listen to hear how the book of Revelation came alive in a new way as he ministered alongside persecuted Christians. He’ll also offer advice to those God may be calling into missions, and give us ways to pray for the work of YWAM around the world. You can hear more about the early days of YWAM from the ministry’s founder, Loren Cunningham, in this episode of VOM Radio.
In this episode of Sacred Tension, Scientology survivor Chris Shelton comes back onto the show to help me figure out if Youth With a Mission (YWAM) is a destructive cult. Youth With a Mission is one of the largest Christian mission organizations in the world, and I was a member for two painful years. In the process we talk about the marks of a destructive cult, trance states, the ubiquity of destructive ideas, and gay conversion therepy.
Choreographer, Jolene Konkel, joins us to tell her story about finding God but discovering a lack of acceptance in the Christian culture that welcomed her dance talents. This led her to be a pioneer in merging the arts and faith in new ways that broke down walls her peers had about concert dance being used to reflect the heart of God. This also led her to her mission of equipping and encouraging "the orphaned artist" to discover there is a place and purpose for them for God to use their gifts. Jolene has an undergrad degree in Christian studies(emphasis in theater) from North Central University and an M.F.A. in Performance and Choreography from Univ. of Milwaukee. She is the founder of Youth With a Mission(YWAM's) global Univ. of the Nations School of Dance Studies. She is choreographer and adjunct faculty in the University of Northwestern's Theater program and has choreographed over 30 local musical productions. She has been showcased in the DanceMakers series at UWM, Choreographer's Evening at the Ritz Theater, Jazz Here, Jazz Now at the Univ. of MN and Rhythmically Speaking at The Southern Theater. Her most recent work was presented at the 2016 MN Fringe Festival.
Listen in this week as we converse with two ministry leaders. First, we’ll share the second half of our conversation with Loren Cunningham, the founder of Youth With a Mission (YWAM). Listen as he talks about getting the Scriptures into every remaining language on earth (www.EndBiblePovertyNow.org) and about the legacy words that are driving him forward with the ministry of YWAM all over the world. Then we’ll hear from Charles Morris, President of Haven Ministries (www.HavenMinistries.org). Charles has just returned from northern Iraq, including villages recently liberated from ISIS control. What’s left of those villages? What challenges await Christians hoping to return to the homes ISIS kicked them out of? Listen in as Charles answers those questions and advises us on specific ways to pray for Christians and non-Christians in Iraq right now.
Loren Cunningham is the founder of Youth With a Mission (YWAM), an organization that has equipped and sent more than five million people on short-term mission trips. God called him to ministry at age 13, and later gave him a vision to call and equip waves of young people to wash up on every continent on earth to share the gospel message. Listen as Loren shares about how God called him, and some of the amazing things he’s seen (and eaten!) over his years of ministry. He’ll also offer advice for those listening for God’s call now, and share how YWAM prepares workers to go to the world’s hardest places with the gospel. Finally he’ll share how the Bible lays the foundation for great spiritual awakenings, which is the reason VOM and YWAM are distributing Bibles all over the world. Listen and learn from one of the great missions leaders of our time, this week on VOM Radio.

I’ve been anticipating this interview with Corben Barber for a few weeks. He’s a recent graduate of a Discipleship Training School (DTS) with the Nashville base for Youth With a Mission (YWAM). After completing his DTS, Corben went on a two month trip to Uganda. Never lose sight of the Gospel, with Corben Barber (https://twitter.com/intent/tweet?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwp.me%2Fp4gNwM-8t&text=Never%20lose%20sight%20of%20the%20Gospel%2C%20with%20Corben%20Barber&via=engagingmission&related=engagingmission) Corben graduated from high school last year and went almost directly into Youth With a Mission (YWAM). After completing the study portion of his Discipleship Training School (DTS), he and the team he was on went to Uganda. His team just returned to the States a few weeks ago and I’ve been hoping to get him on the show ever since. In past weeks, we’ve heard from people currently on the mission field, some who have transitioned into the marketplace, or who lead missions-related organizations in the US. But Corben is our first guest who just returned from a short-term mission trip. Key QuoteHow far am I willing to go before the Gospel isn't real enough? - Corben Barber (https://twitter.com/intent/tweet?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwp.me%2Fp4gNwM-8t&text=How%20far%20am%20I%20willing%20to%20go%20before%20the%20Gospel%20isn%27t%20real%20enough%3F%20-%20Corben%20Barber&via=engagingmission&related=engagingmission) ChallengesCorben shares with us what crutches and digestive problems have to do with a lady who wanted to receive the Gospel. I see other people and the Gospel doesn’t seem real to them. So why should it be real to me if it’s not real to them? (https://twitter.com/intent/tweet?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwp.me%2Fp4gNwM-8t&text=I%20see%20other%20people%20and%20the%20Gospel%20doesn%E2%80%99t%20seem%20real%20to%20them.%20So%20why%20should%20it%20be%20real%20to%20me%20if%20it%E2%80%99s%20not%20real%20to%20them%3F&via=engagingmission&related=engagingmission) RevelationTheir trip involved a service project with aquaponics but when they completed their project, they realized something that made them wonder why they were really there. Their discovery “destroyed” their plans for the rest of the trip but led to a personal revelation. Maybe our agenda isn’t God’s agenda. While he's in this time of waiting to see what's next, he wants to be focused on a couple of specific things. But he also realizes that just because he's in a holding pattern doesn't mean God can't use him right now. Level UpCorben mentions how just sharing lunch and having a real conversation as friends can encourage a missionary. That's something that we can do with anyone in our lives. Speed RoundHindsightCorben realized something when he returned that he wishes he would have known because it would have made re-entry easier. Corben Barber recently completed his Discipleship Training School with Youth With a Mission (YWAM). After three months of learning about the heart of God, he joined a team headed to Uganda, Africa. Join us as we learn about God's faithfulness throughout t
This week I’m really happy to bring you Brent Bazler (alias), who works with the Nashville base for Youth With a Mission (YWAM). In our time together, he shared some amazing stories of God’s faithfulness and offered a two-part framework for encouraging, supporting, and blessing missionaries in unconventional ways as well as the “M.L.P.” framework for making ministry decisions. Before becoming a missionary, Brent spent time as an educator, living for the summer mission trips until it finally became clear that he and his family needed to step into full-time ministry in order to be obedient to where God was leading them. Since that transition they have faced challenges and also seen amazing examples of God’s faithfulness. I so enjoy the way Brent delights in The Lord and trusts so fully. I’m sure that you will enjoy this interview. Key ScriptureThe LORD will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore. Ps 121:8 (https://twitter.com/intent/tweet?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwp.me%2Fp4gNwM-6J&text=The%20LORD%20will%20keep%20your%20going%20out%20and%20your%20coming%20in%20from%20this%20time%20forth%20and%20forevermore.%20Ps%20121%3A8&via=engagingmission&related=engagingmission) ChallengesHow a 16th floor apartment, and angel, and a roll of film are part of the same story What happened just before a dentist appointment How God confirmed that Brent’s children had the right idea when it came time for a significatn life change (and investment) RevelationHow God used a group of ladies from a church in California to challenge Brent and his family. And how that led to a new direction in their ministry. Are you preferring to be a martyr when you’re supposed to be a multiplier? And how he’s seen God’s faithfulness. Current MinistryHow ministry and children fit together for Brent and his wife. A fun way that YWAM Nashville is supporting their community (hint: you can find out more and even be involved if you sign up here (https://runsignup.com/race/TN/adams/runforthenations5k) before May 10, 2014) Some other exciting things that involve both Brent and YWAM Nashville What’s special about YWAM Nashville? There are a number of different missions organizations. Each tends to have their own focus and I believe that all are valuable. In our discussion, Brent offered up some things that he believes make YWAM unique. YWAM is an extremely flexible organization, willing to move on short notice YWAM Nashville is good at building and maintaining relationships. Find out what an umbrella and a C.U.P. have to do with worship and the ministry direction of YWAM Nashville. The “M.L.P.” framework for making ministry decisions. Ministry (What should I do?) Location (Where should I go?) People (Who should I be involved with?) Level UpBrent offers some great “outside the box” ideas for what people can do to encourage and support missionaries. He shares a couple of ways that people have helped him and his family in the past. And he offers a framework for being able to discover those unconventional ways to support and encourage missionaries. What is a heart need that a #missionary might be too embarrassed to ask for help in? I’m excited to bring you a special guest this week – my wife, Katherine Entzminger. Ordinarily, she wouldn’t be interested in something like this but she’s really felt God moving her to share some of the stories from her time as a missionary. Preach the Gospel at all times and when necessary, use words. (https://twitter.com/intent/tweet?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwp.me%2Fp4gNwM-6i&text=Preach%20the%20Gospel%20at%20all%20times%20and%20when%20necessary%2C%20use%20words.&via=engagingmission&related=engagingmission) Right now Katherine is a full-time homemaker but she spent about 4 ½ years as a missionary with Youth with a Mission (YWAM). While in YWAM, she traveled to Mexico and Central America, Africa, India, and Central Europe. She also spent time as part of the support staff on a YWAM base. After her time with YWAM, she went back to school and re-entered the marketplace. And that was all before she and I ever met. In this week’s interview, you’ll discover:One often-misattributed quote that has shaped how Katherine approaches both friendship and ministry How Katherine ended up lost on a street, faced with armed military and how God brought her and another missionary back to where they were safe One thing that God showed her that has released forgiveness in her life What’s exciting Katherine right now and what she’s looking forward to One thing you can do to encourage a missionary today Some advice Katherine was given that sets her up to receive help One thing that someone did to support her while she was a missionary and even while she was transitioning back into the marketplace Internet Resource: Facebook (http://facebook.com/) Book Recommendation: No Compromise Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1595551646/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=1595551646&linkCode=as2&tag=emrs-20) iBooks (https://itunes.apple.com/us/book/no-compromise/id614737027?mt=11&uo=4&at=11lxLQ) What Katherine would focus on for the first seven days in a new country and what she would do to ensure she wouldn’t be distracted from it.
