This week on The Professional Left:Weather woes! Driftglass and Blue Gal welcome some special guests - tornado refugees (the two younger kids!) - as severe weather interrupts podcast preparations.A "No Fair Remembering Stuff" segment takes us back to 2008's bizarre tire pressure inflation controversy - and why it matters as a "telling detail" in the trajectory of Republican politics.Science Fiction University returns with a look at a particular time travel novel and its eerie parallels to current events involving South African connections to the Trump administration. How has the GOP's disinformation playbook evolved but remains unchanged, and what is its real purpose? In this episode of The Professional Left Podcast, we return from our break to tackle the media's misuse of political vocabulary and how a certain pundit twists language to avoid placing blame where it belongs. We break down a prominent columnist's appearance on PBS that perfectly illustrates this problem, while examining how his myth of the "Sensible Center" continues to poison our discourse. Our news roundup covers troubling developments from the Trump administration alongside a few rays of hope from recent local elections and court decisions. Join us for vocabulary lessons, media criticism, and proof that in America's partisan divide, one side is clearly the problem.Stay in Touch! Blue Gal had a scheduling conflict today, so it's me and Driftglass for the hour. We talked about Donald's polling collapse and why people keep genuflecting to him. We talked about the recessionary GDP numbers. We talked about Donald's ridiculous interview with Terry Moran. We talked Andor Season 2, and a lot more. So stick around for this talk. We discuss Chicago politics as 26-year-old progressive influencer Kat Abughazaleh challenges veteran Rep. Jan Schakowsky, who may be announcing her retirement after 14 terms in Congress. Then we take a look at Trump's latest projection scheme as his DOJ targets ActBlue while conveniently ignoring WinRed's shady operations. Both sides don't! Only one for-profit fundraising platform skims millions off donations; we connect the dots on how money flows through our political system—and who's really pulling the strings. This episode might be shorter than usual as we prepare for a brief break, but we're packing in the analysis you won't hear anywhere else!Driftglass will be on the Bob Cesca Show AND the Bradcast on Wednesday 4/30, and we'll be back on the air next week! We replayed some of our talks last week, but this one is ALL NEW, recorded today, and it includes the breaking news about Donald backpedaling on his tariffs – for now. Time to dive into Donald Trump's tantrum-driven manufacturing policy and catastrophic tariff regime. We follow the destructive path of his administration as it systematically dismantles Biden's successful manufacturing initiatives - from shutting down EV charging stations to threatening billions in loans for electric vehicle factories. We explain how manufacturing jobs create a powerful multiplier effect (each job creates nine other jobs), and how Trump's policies are now subtracting jobs from the economy. Then it's time to give Driftglass space to deliver a scathing analysis of David Brooks' latest Atlantic article, "I Should Have Seen This Coming" - exposing how Brooks has been writing essentially the same column about the GOP "stumbling but recovering" for over 20 years while ignoring the cancer growing within the party.Plus, we share stories from our recent weekend trip to Chicago, discuss the ongoing manufacturing labor shortage, and highlight the absurdity of Trump administration officials like Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant, and Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins as they attempt to defend these disastrous economic policies.Join us for another no-holds-barred examination of how conservatives are deliberately destroying economic progress simply to erase Democratic accomplishments.More at proleftpod.com.Support our podcast work. If you're feeling nauseous right now, that's to be expected and you're not alone. Exactly one week after proclaiming it "liberation day" and a week of saying he wouldn't back down, today the orange one pulled a 180 and said "never mind," pausing the "reciprocal tariffs" for 90 days, except for China and 10% for everyone else. Huh?If you're confused, you're also not alone. But as I said on Monday after noting that RUMORS of him 'pausing' the tariffs caused the stock market the rebound temporarily, which let us know that there is a way to reverse the huge crash, there was a way to turn it around. I guess he was listening. But in the next breath, he said to stand by for huge tariffs on pharmaceuticals. (Where's that barf bag?)Today, we're joined by our pal Driftglass, one of the OG progressive bloggers who's still churning it out at driftglass.blogspot.com and co-hosting the Professional Left Podcast with his wonderful wife Bluegal Fran at proleftpod.com.

AKA There Is No Trump without Newt. In episode 888 of The Professional Left Podcast, hosts driftglass and Blue Gal dive into the political landscape of April 1st, 2025, where April Fools Day is effectively canceled at the Cornfield Resistance due to the real Fool occupying the Oval Office. The hosts examine how Republicans have weaponized language over decades, tracing the destructive path from Newt Gingrich's slash-and-burn politics through Rush Limbaugh's hate radio to Trump's presidency. They contrast this with Democrats' constant pressure to be "civil" and "bipartisan," recalling Senator Durbin's tearful apology for his anti-Gitmo torture comments while Republicans never apologize for anything. Also covered: Senator Cory Booker's filibuster against hate, the White House Correspondents' Association's capitulation by canceling comedian Amber Ruffin, Elon Musk's dangerous plan to replace the COBOL code running Social Security payments, and a news roundup featuring Trump's latest attacks on democracy—from Signal-gate to tariff impacts, DEI funding cuts, and threats to the Smithsonian.Don't miss this sharp, unapologetic analysis of why "talking to the other side" isn't viable when the other side has abandoned democratic principles entirely.More at proleftpod.com.Driftglass will be on The BradCast with Digby on 4/2/2025. Content warning: Contains strong language and adult themes. Not safe for work or children. In this spicy episode, Blue Gal and Driftglass explore the history and strategic importance of profanity in political discourse. They particularly focus on how the mainstream media's obsession with "civility" has been weaponized against progressives. They trace this phenomenon from David Broder's pearl-clutching about "vituperative" liberal bloggers to today's both-sides coverage of Trump's attacks on the press. The hosts examine how the media rushed to defend Fox News when Obama questioned their legitimacy while remaining largely silent as Trump systematically excluded mainstream outlets from coverage. They also cover significant developments, including Trump's lawsuit against CBS, mass firings of inspectors general, devastating proposed Medicaid cuts, and Elon Musk's expanding influence over federal agencies. The Professional Left is recorded live from the Cornfield Resistance. In this episode of The Professional Left Podcast, hosts Blue Gal and Driftglass discuss the impact of Trump's recent federal funding freeze on American farmers, particularly those who supported him in the 2024 election. They examine multiple news reports from across the country showing how farmers are facing financial hardship after Trump halted various USDA programs, including conservation projects and foreign food aid initiatives. The hosts analyze the viral story of Skylar Holden, a young Trump-supporting cattle farmer whose TikTok video about potentially losing his farm garnered significant attention, along with the measured response from veteran farmer Will Westmoreland. They explore the broader themes of accountability, political narratives, and the persistent "both sides" rhetoric that enables voters to avoid confronting the consequences of their choices. The episode concludes with an extensive news roundup covering recent actions by the Trump administration, including changes to military academy oversight, foreign policy decisions, and various executive orders. The hosts also discuss local politics in Illinois and share ways listeners can take action through initiatives like the 5 Calls app and postcard writing campaigns.Episode artwork by Bluegal with an assist from StableDiffusionWeb.comSubscribe to the show wherever you get your podcasts, and check out proleftpod.com for more info and ways to contribute.Become a Patreon at patreon.com/proleftpodRecorded February 11, 2025. The Professional Left Podcast #874: Federal jobs and local economies are in chaos as Trump and Musk wreak havoc at USAID and beyond. Driftglass and Blue Gal break down how Republican propaganda keeps winning despite their awful job creation record, and why some Never Trumpers can't quit bashing Democrats. The hosts dig into research showing Dems are way better at creating jobs (shocking, right?), while Republicans excel at... lying about it. From Trump's whiplash-inducing tariff decisions to his sketchy State Department picks, and from NASA scrubbing diversity mentions to protests at USAID - it's been quite a week at the Cornfield Resistance.Links for this episode: Pew Research on jobs: https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2025/01/07/what-the-data-says-about-federal-workers/Driftglass and Digby on the Bradcast 2/5/2025 https://bradblog.com/?p=15297Driftglass and Blue Gal on The Cliff Schecter Show https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Tb0TkDaY3M Episode artwork by BluegalSubscribe to the show wherever you get your podcasts or check out proleftpod.com for more info and ways to contribute.Recorded February 6, 2025. An exploration of how the “DEI madness” conspiracy is really just the GOP's latest excuse to scapegoat diversity while distracting from their own failures. In this week's Professional Left Podcast, Driftglass and Blue Gal dive into the aftermath of a tragic midair collision over Washington, D.C., and the farcical responses from Trump's administration. From blaming DEI hires to pointing fingers at everyone but himself, the fallout from the crash reveals the dangerous incompetence of Sean Duffy, Trump's unqualified Transportation Secretary. As the hosts dissect the chaotic response and Trump's penchant for politicizing tragedy, they explore the contrast between Republican and Democratic leadership styles, with special attention to the powerful pushback from Democratic governors against Trump's agenda. They also reflect on the moral and strategic challenges facing the Democratic Party as they navigate a long fight ahead—one that demands clarity, decisive action, and a refusal to compromise with fascists.Plus, there's an appearance by a certain internet kitty with a love for forklifts! In this episode, Driftglass and Blue Gal tackle claims that "the resistance is over" by drawing powerful parallels between current "resistance fatigue" narratives and similar premature declarations during the Bush era. No Fair Remembering 2010? Our SECOND episode from over 14 years ago. Before we were married! Driftglass was in Chicago, and Blue Gal was in Springfield, recording over Skype. This episode was recorded at a pivotal moment in recent American political history. The Supreme Court had just handed down its landmark Citizens United decision, fundamentally altering and corrupting the landscape of campaign finance. Meanwhile, the country was mere weeks away from the signing of the Affordable Care Act, a piece of legislation that would reshape the healthcare system and lead to Republicans losing their damn minds for years to come.Listening to our discussion from 14 years ago, you may be struck by the urgency and uncertainty of that moment.More at proleftpod.com.You can help us pay for DG's eye doctor expenses athttps://www.gofundme.com/f/help-ease-dgs-medical-financial-burdenBlue Gal's knitting podcast! https://www.youtube.com/@flangumOur podcast YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@ProfessionalLeftSupport the show:PayPal | https://paypal.me/proleftpodcastPatreon | https://patreon.com/proleftpodSupport the show

Sir, many people have told us that Trump might drop out. Several important people said that Trump should drop out of the race. Some people say he should flee the country. I've even heard one person say he's a flight "risk," and that's what they call it, a "risk"- that he'll flee the country. Many things we thought would last forever didn't. Democratic messaging on housing, pollution, autism. Driftglass notes, "I, too, am in Hell." Explore the critical role of media in shaping political narratives with a spotlight on Lawrence O'Donnell's blunt critique of media transparency failures. We compare the divergent coverage of the Hillary Clinton email scandal and the Trump campaign's secretive activities, underscoring the biased nature of media decisions. In addition, we touch on Hillary Clinton's compassionate engagement with autism issues and highlight the significance of urban planning initiatives, drawing lessons from the successful strategies in Arlington, Virginia, versus Chicago's past housing project failures.Links for this episode: Works in Progress: How DC [Arlington VA] Densified: https://worksinprogress.co/issue/how-dc-densified/ More at proleftpod.com.You can help us pay for DG's eye doctor expenses athttps://www.gofundme.com/f/help-ease-dgs-medical-financial-burdenBlue Gal's knitting podcast! https://www.youtube.com/@flangumOur podcast YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@ProfessionalLeftSupport the show:PayPal | https://paypal.me/proleftpodcastPatreon | https://patreon.com/proleftpodSupport the Show.
