Walaa’s life was forever changed when her home was set on fire in an arson attack, a moment that forced her to confront her deepest fears and the idea of surrendering to death. Yet, it was in facing her own vulnerabilities — the parts of herself she found most uncomfortable and “cringe” — that she discovered her path to healing. This profound self-acceptance led to the creation of “The Cringe Theory,” a powerful tool to help others transform their pain into growth. The birth of her daughter marked her true rebirth, as she found new strength and purpose in motherhood, realizing that through embracing life’s challenges, she could rise anew and help others do the same.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Gambling addiction is often seen as an individual problem, but its effects ripple far beyond the person placing the bets. For families, it can lead to financial instability, emotional distress, and fractured relationships. In this episode, Katie shares her personal journey of discovering her husband's gambling problem and how she and her children moved forward. Speaking as a parent and a teacher with twenty years of experience, Katie argues that more recognition is needed about how gambling problems impact families, especially young people. Noting a lack of resources and supports for children experiencing gambling harms, she developed a workbook. It's a tool for parents, family members, teachers and counsellors to help children understand and cope when compulsive gambling disrupts their lives. Katie's workbook is available on Amazon and is called All Bets Are Off: Hope and Healing When a Loved One's Gambling Addiction is Destroying Everything. Listen to this impactful interview with Katie and hear: What spouses and family members can do when a loved one isn't ready to stop gambling How to support children when a parent's gambling is negatively impacting the family What help is available for spouses, family members and chldren experiencing gambling harms To read a summary of this episode go to the blog at www.gamblingproblemhelp.ca. Paul Lisicky remembers when he first heard Joni Mitchell on the radio, and when he found one of her records in a bin at Korvettes. He was inspired by her musicality, her poetry, and her willingness to defy musical conventions. Nearly every one of her songs spoke to him in some way. As a budding songwriter whose music was widely performed in churches around the country, he was motivated by her superb tunings, phrasing, and melodies. Later, he focused more on lyrics and prose, hers and his own, eventually earning a master's in creative fiction and working in the world of professional writing. He continued to follow Joni's career and never got tired of her music, which helped him navigate the ups and downs of his life. Song So Wild and Blue: A Life with the Music of Joni Mitchell (HarperOne, 2025) is a beautiful memoir about the struggle of a gay writer intertwined with the life and career of the magnificent Joni Mitchell. Paul Lisicky grew up in southern New Jersey but has lived most of his adult life in Massachusetts and New York City. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees in English from Rutgers University and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop (1990). He authored seven books, including Song So Wild and Blue: A Life with the Music of Joni Mitchell, The Burning House, Famous Builder, Later, The Narrow Door, and Lawn Boy. His work has appeared in The Atlantic, BuzzFeed, Conjunctions, The Cut, Fence, The New York Times, Ploughshares, Tin House, and in many other magazines and anthologies. Inspired by everyone from Neil Young and Eric Church to My Chemical Romance and Green Day, he has architected a raw and real style of his own. No stranger to hard work, he has impressively balanced a full schedule at University of Mount Olive with an intense full-time job as a foreman for an erosion control company—all the while gaining traction on songs such as “Burning House” and “No Surprise.” He also notably attracted an audience one fan-at-a-time, gaining traction locally and magnifying his imprint on social media. Inking a deal with underscore works recordings / Warner Records in 2024, Wesko holds nothing back on his debut Lost Boys EP and more to come.Donate HERE to help the folks in Western North Carolina!Support the show
A guy in Georgia named Dylan Betts was driving home from work last month when he saw a house on fire, kicked in the front door, and got the owner out. STORY: https://www.fox5atlanta.com/news/winterville-house-fire-mcconnells
Brandon Washington, Pastor at Embassy Christian Bible Church and author of A Burning House, joins Autumn and Hunter on the podcast to discuss his recent book. In A Burning House, Washington contends that American Evangelicalism is a house ablaze: burning by its own hand due to an “in-house schism.” The stain of segregation has long tarnished the witness of Christianity and hampered our progress toward a Christ-like vision of Shalom—peace, justice, and wholeness—in the world. Common doctrine may unite black and white evangelicals. However, rifts such as social ethics and cultural influences still separate us, and we are in danger of embracing a truncated or partial gospel.Resources mentioned in this episode:

The contemporary sexual marketplace is witnessing a Mexican standoff between men and women. Women want men to "do better," and men want women to be reasonable. Both sides are increasingly comfortable remaining single until their demands are met. In this episode, I discuss the way out of this standoff by examining how the power differential between men and women changes as a function of time. The Pals x Oliver Cronin Episode 268 Following the release of “Hello Goodbye” earlier this year, a sold out debut headline tour, and being nominated for Best New Artist at the 2024 Shure Rolling Stone Awards, Australian dark-pop artist Oliver Cronin keeps the momentum going with the anthemic new single “Burning House” via Warner Records / Warner Music Australia. Taken from his to-be-announced debut album, “Burning House” hears the Sydney based artist stepping into a pulsating synth soundscape that is reminiscent of artists like Justin Bieber. Layering the upbeat production with confident and romantic lyricism, Oliver Cronin sings about even if everything goes wrong that you'll be fine as long as you're with the person you care most about. "My producer Skimmy played me the beat for it the first day I got to LA, and I immediately knew I wanted to use it for the album. We got distracted making the rest of the album but every time we got in the car I'd get him to play that beat for me again. We got to the last couple days of the trip and we decided to give it a go, at that point in time I didn't have enough love songs on the record so we went into it with that in mind. The fun thing about the process of this song is there was absolutely no pressure because we had basically already written the whole album, so we could just fuck around and have fun and see what we came up with. I wrote it with Mason Dane, Dan Elkayan and Matt Hall and the song is about sticking by a loved one, your partner, your best friend, your ride or die really, through thick or thin. We knew it was something special as soon as we made it.” Says Oliver Cronin on the song. 2023 was a year full of highs for Oliver Cronin which saw multiple viral successes with his TikTok remixes and livestreams that have seen him amass over 670K followers on the app. Interpretations of songs like “Paint The Town Red” by Doja Cat, “Escapism” by RAYE, and “3:15 (Breathe)” by Russ have introduced him to a whole new audience, while his livestreams have seen him creating new music and candidly showing viewers his creative process. He shared a couple of singles including the hypnotic “Speed Bump,” the tropical-pop collaboration “I Need You” with Lil Xxel, and the summer anthem “1,2,3” with Topic which highlighted a well-crafted sound and an excitement to experiment. He also dropped the three-track EP after midnight (demos),which was a collection of unfinished demos he's written on live streams and ones fans were requesting. He featured on Connor Price's viral track “RUBY,” and Canadian rising star Lum's “Temptation.” On the touring front in 2023, Oliver Cronin joined Nessa Barrett on her sold-out Australian and New Zealand tour in December which saw him performing in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Auckland. He also performed at the inaugural SXSW Sydney. 2024 is shaping up to be a massive year for Oliver Cronin following the release of “Hello Goodbye” and “Burning House”, his debut sold headline tour, and he's currently overseas on a whirlwind promo trip in UK, Germany, America and Asia. Stay tuned for more exciting news soon. Follow him at @olivercronin & us @thepalspodcast / @yourpalrick @danigalarneau

Fratello On Air is back with another listener-inspired show topic. This week, we talk about the three watches each of us would save from a burning house. Don't worry, we'll keep things light as a real fire is no joke. Of course, expect a bit of banter up front as we work up to the main theme.A fire at home is a terrible thought, so feel free to insert an emergency that would require a near-instantaneous choice of three watches from the collection. No more or no less can be taken. Of course, the family and pets are safe, so it's fine to focus on your prized possessions. We'll set a couple of rules below to help ensure we get to our absolute favorites.Handgelenks KontrolleBefore discussing the three watches that we would choose above all others, we turn to some brief banter. Never fear, we're going to do our best to keep it to ten minutes! Balazs mentions a great book called, "Soled Out: The Golden Age of Sneaker Advertising (A Sneaker Freaker Book)." He then mentions two television shows named, "Gangs of London," and "Godless." Mike brings up the "Mayor of Kingstown." As far as our wristwear, Mike is wearing a relatively new acquisition, the '30s Movado Curviplan. Balazs is sporting his gorgeous vintage Sinn Excelsior Park chronograph. It was the perfect watch for his recent visit to Sinn HQ.The three watches we'd saveIt's a tough topic to think about, but if we had to save three watches in our collection, what would we choose? Before we get to it, though, we are excluding any family heirloom watches if they aren't selected. The choices were tough and some familiar names made the list. A couple of surprises come along, though.Balazs:Angelus 215 L.E.Omega Speedmaster 145.022 TransitionalRolex GMT-Master Ref. 1675Mike:Breitling 765 CPPatek Philippe Calatrava Ref. 570Rolex Sea-Dweller "Great White" Ref. 1665What watches in your collection would you grab in a pinch? Thanks again to one of our listeners for suggesting this fun topic and thanks to everyone for listening. In this Best of Awake in the World podcast episode Michael begins by discussing death and Japan's earthquake. Using the image of the burning house and a father trying to save his children, he teaches how we need to leave our burning houses on our own steam, nobody can do it for us. The father in the parable, like the Buddha, uses skillful means to teach a path of freedom. And, is it ok to lie to uphold compassion? Recorded on March 29, 2011. The Awake in the World podcast is brought to you by the generosity of our amazing Patreon supporters, making it possible for us to keep Michael's archive of teachings available to the public. In a shocking revelation, Matthew Richards, a 41-year-old youth pastor from Shawnee, Kansas, is facing grave charges of attempting to kill his wife, five children, and committing arson at his own residence. Authorities have detailed the alleged events that transpired on the early hours of September 16. The Chilling Accusation According to the Shawnee Police Department, on September 16, firefighters and police officers arrived at Richards' residence on Goode Drive at approximately 3:47 a.m. This was in response to alarming reports of a disturbance paired with a fire. On inspection, a fire was identified in the basement and promptly doused by the responding firefighters. Subsequent investigations painted a horrifying scene. All members of the family, including Richards' wife, Stephanie, their 19-year-old child, and four younger children, sustained laceration injuries, with the police noting the injuries were of "varying degrees." In connection with this, Richards now stands charged with five counts of attempted premeditated first-degree murder and an additional count of aggravated arson with the risk of causing bodily harm. Both Richards and the injured family members were quickly transported to a nearby hospital for emergency medical treatment. Richards: The Man Behind the Accusation Richards, a key figure at the Crossroads Christian Church since August 2016, is described on the church's website as “a big kid who loves teaching little kids about Jesus.” The biography goes on to provide insights into his personal life, highlighting his marriage with Stephanie since 2003 and their five children. They uphold three cardinal family rules: 1. Love God, 2. Love People, and 3. Love Sports, with particular affection for the Jayhawks and Sporting KC. However, in the wake of these serious allegations, there's a palpable dissonance between the family-oriented, religious figure depicted in his biography and the grim charges he currently faces. Church's Response to the Incident The gravity of the situation did not go unnoticed by the senior leadership of Crossroads Christian Church. Senior Pastor Kurt Witten took to an official platform on the very day of the incident, stating, "We are aware of the situation involving our Children's Pastor, Matt Richards." He further noted the church's intention to gather more information and assured the congregation and community of a comprehensive statement in due course. Pastor Witten urged for respect considering the ongoing nature of the investigation and solicited prayers for the beleaguered Richards family. Ongoing Investigation Authorities remain committed to piecing together the exact sequence of events leading up to that fateful morning. As the investigation delves deeper, Richards is held on a $5 million bond, reflecting the severity of the accusations against him. The unfolding of these events has understandably left the Shawnee community in a state of shock. Such incidents remind us that appearances can be deceptive, and even the most unsuspecting individuals can harbor dark secrets. As the investigation progresses, the community and the church await clarity on this tragic incident, hoping for justice and healing for all those involved. In these testing times, Shawnee unites, with many focusing on supporting the Richards family and praying for their speedy recovery. It remains essential to respect the ongoing investigation, allowing authorities to carry out their duties in the pursuit of the truth. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Writer and bookseller Aimee from Burning House Books drops by to talk Pride & couches, football, accidentally getting @'d by the First Minister of Scotland and the ensuing toilet bowl of her mentions, the working class experience of reading, urban decay, financialisation, and the pure uncut diamond genius of David Wojnarowicz. We'll be back soon to continue the conversation with Aimee and probably read some bits from Wojnarowicz's titan of a book, Close to the Knives (1991). Aimee from Burning House Books joins us again in part two of our mini-series on David Wojnarowicz's rocket launcher of a memoir, Close to the Knives (1991). We read some key passages of the book aloud then talk about the AIDS crisis (in the US and UK vs. the 'other' parts of the world) and Covid, America's idea of itself as what Wojnarowicz called a 'ONE-TRIBE NATION', what the state's violent neglect of its own citizens can tell us about the rise of neoliberalism and the outsourcing of sickness and vulnerability, and finally what a revolutionary individuality might look like.
