Investopedia's Caleb Silver says there were many positives in the first round of big bank earnings. He notes investment banking and a streamline of IPOs signaling bullish indicators for JPMorgan Chase (JPM) and Citigroup (C), but warns of net interest income as a bearish sign for Wells Fargo (WFC). Stock market update for July 15, 2025.
On today's podcast: 1) Nvidia surges to an all-time high on news it will resume Chip sales to China. US government officials told Nvidia they would green-light export licenses for the H20 artificial intelligence accelerator, according to the company. The move is seen as a "massive win" for Nvidia's Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang, and is also viewed positively by Vey-Sern Ling, managing director at Union Bancaire Privee, who says it is "obviously positive" for Nvidia, the AI semiconductor supply chain, and China tech platforms.2) The European Union puts out new tariff targets if it can't reach a deal with the US. The European Union has finalized a list of countermeasures to target US goods worth €72 billion, including Boeing Co. aircraft, automobiles and bourbon. The list includes US machinery products, chemicals and plastics, medical devices, electrical equipment, wines and other agricultural goods, according to a document prepared by the European Commission. The EU trade chief Maros Sefcovic says the US tariff policy is "effectively prohibitive" to transatlantic trade, and the EU insists any settlement must be mutually beneficial to both sides.3) Big bank earnings begin with JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, and Citi reporting. America’s biggest banks are heading into earnings season with tailwinds from trading and lending as they benefit from market volatility and steady borrowing costs. Investment banking may be a weak spot as sluggish closings offset a pickup in deal announcements, Bloomberg Intelligence said.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Pierre Buhler previews big bank earnings. He expects financials to continue to improve but notes an increase in bad debt. He thinks regional banks are the most exposed to risk and says to keep a close eye on their reports this earnings season. He likes JPMorgan (JPM) and Goldman Sachs (GS), citing their “focus.” He also notes Wells Fargo (WFC) becoming “very, very powerful” again after its asset cap was lifted. Carl Quintanilla, Courtney Reagan, and Mike Santoli started the hour by discussing the market trying to rebound after it suffered its worst day in about 3 weeks. Both BofA and Goldman raised their S&P 500 forecasts as well, predicting some higher gains for the index ahead. CNBC's Deirdre Bosa also joined the program to discuss Meta continuing its talent poaching spree as the company hired one of Apple's top AI researchers. Later in the show, Courtney broke down what President Trump's tariffs might mean for Amazon's Prime Day sales, which kicked off today. Also in the mix: the desk hit the bank stocks, after HSBC downgraded JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, and Bank of America ahead of their earnings next week. Squawk on the Street Disclaimer
Stocks closed mixed on a sluggish trading day, though the RUT showed signs of life with notable gains. Downgrades against JPMorgan Chase (JPM), Goldman Sachs (GS), and Bank of America (BAC) from HSBC did no favors for the session. CoreWeave (CRWV) also got several downgrades after it penned a $9 billion deal to acquire Core Scientific (CORZ). Meta Platforms (META) added a former Apple (AAPL) A.I. lead to its own "superintelligence" team. Marley Kayden takes investors through the day's biggest stories.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day.Subscribe to the Market Minute newsletter - https://schwabnetwork.com/subscribeDownload the iOS app - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/schwab-...Download the Amazon Fire Tv App - https://www.amazon.com/TD-Ameritrade-...Watch on Sling - https://watch.sling.com/1/asset/19192...Watch on Vizio - https://www.vizio.com/en/watchfreeplu...Watch on DistroTV - https://www.distro.tv/live/schwab-net...Follow us on X – / schwabnetwork Follow us on Facebook – / schwabnetwork Follow us on LinkedIn - / schwab-network About Schwab Network - https://schwabnetwork.com/about

Larry McDonald sees market shifts ahead as investors digest what he calls "Trump optimism." One of the biggest changes he says will come from banks, pointing to JPMorgan Chase (JPM) as being overbought. Larry expects a sell-off in it and other big banks while smaller counterparts reap the benefits. He sees A.I. semiconductors pulling back for similar reasons, while fossil fuels like coal and companies tied to it to grind higher.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day. Big banks like JPMorgan Chase (JPM), Goldman Sachs (GS) and Morgan Stanley (MS) boosted their dividends as they see rosier growth outlooks. Diane later notes an earnings mover in Constellation Brands (STZ), which missed expectations but still gained this morning.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day.
