Choosing Peace Over Pride with OMB Peezy

In this episode of Perspektives with Bank, Big Bank sits down with Alabama-born rapper OMB Peezy for an honest conversation about mental health, personal growth, and choosing authenticity in an industry driven by attention and controversy. Peezy reflects on growing up in Mobile before relocating to California and eventually Atlanta, explaining how life experiences reshaped his perspective on success, responsibility, and staying out of situations that no longer serve him. He opens up about becoming what he calls a "retired crash out," learning that communication often prevents conflict, redefining boredom as peace, and why protecting his mental well-being has become more important than proving a point. The conversation also explores forgiveness, loyalty, and the pressures of fame, as Peezy discusses overcoming addiction, navigating the dangers of Xanax and Percocet dependency, and reclaiming control of his life through discipline and intentional change. Big Bank and Peezy examine the realities of today's music industry, from clout chasing and manufactured controversy to ownership, independent distribution, and building a sustainable career without sacrificing integrity. The episode closes with a preview of Peezy's upcoming album Say It Yourself and new music, delivering an inspiring conversation about resilience, accountability, and creating lasting success on your own terms. Most people think of private lending as something new. It isn't. In this episode, Ryan and Neal trace the complete history of private lending in Canada, from the handshake loans of the pre-WWI era to the creation of Mortgage Investment Corporations in the 1970s, through the mortgage broker boom of the 80s and 90s, the stress test of 2016 to 2018, and the pandemic explosion that followed. They break down how MICs were designed to democratize mortgage investing for everyday Canadians, why the structure is uniquely Canadian and doesn't exist anywhere else in the world, and how securitization let the big banks squeeze out individual lenders for decades. They also get into where things are heading: more institutional capital entering the space, tighter regulation, and AI starting to reshape how mortgage applications get processed.A must-listen if you want to understand the full arc of an industry that has been quietly solving problems banks won't touch for over 100 years.Chapters:2:39 Why We're Covering Private Lending History 6:01 Before the Big Banks: Lending Pre-WWI 7:44 The Borrower Profile That Never Changed 8:05 Banks Were More Conservative Back Then10:24 Why MICs Were Created in the 1970s 11:00 How a MIC Actually Works 14:23 MICs Are Uniquely Canadian 15:04 When Mortgage Brokers Changed the Game 17:37 When Housing Became an Asset Class 20:03 The Stress Test That Changed Everything 23:32 Was Growth Need-Driven or Lender-Driven? 26:29 The Pandemic Boom: 2020 to 2022 28:57 Private Lending Today: More Sophisticated Than Ever 33:54 Future: Institutional Capital and Regulation 34:26 AI Is Coming for the Broker Space 38:31 Where Private Lending Goes from HereResources:Keystone Capital GroupCPLP Instagram: @cplpodcastKeystone Instagram: @keycapgroupFind Neal On:Instagram: @neal.andreinoLinkedIn: Neal AndreinoFind Ryan on:LinkedIn: Ryan MacNeilE-mail: ryan@keycap.ca

In this bonus episode of Perspektives with Bank, Big Bank sits down with Houston rapper Cartel Bo for a raw and inspiring conversation about resilience, redemption, and building a new future after unimaginable adversity. Cartel Bo reflects on his upbringing in Houston's Lakewood and Myrtle Wood neighborhoods, opening up about childhood abuse, homelessness, time spent in the streets, and the experiences that ultimately led to incarceration. He shares how early momentum from records like "Hoover" attracted federal attention, the challenges of life on the run, and the harsh realities of serving time in federal prison before returning home determined to rewrite his story through music. The conversation also explores Cartel Bo's rapid rise following his release, including signing with Warner Records, navigating creative differences with the label, and betting on himself when others questioned records that would later gain traction. He discusses balancing fatherhood and public scrutiny amid ongoing custody disputes, using viral moments to grow his platform, and creating opportunities for others by employing formerly incarcerated individuals through his trucking business. From independence and entrepreneurship to loyalty, relationships, and the drive behind his latest project Hit for a Bag 3, this episode delivers an honest look at perseverance, accountability, and turning life's hardest lessons into long-term success. #202: Practical Fintech: Surviving Payment Platforms and Big Banks - Paul Hoeper

Practical Founders Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 26, 2026 56:27

Paul Hoeper founded InvoiceASAP after spotting a simple but painful problem in 2009: home service businesses couldn't easily create invoices or collect payments from the field using mobile devices. He started in New Orleans, launched during the earliest days of mobile apps, and built one of the first mobile invoicing products integrated with both Square and Clover. He also suffered through several payment platform providers who never lived up to their sales pitches. Today, InvoiceASAP serves about 23,000 paying home service businesses and roughly 400,000 total users across HVAC, plumbing, roofing, landscaping, and other field service trades. The company generates just under $5M in annual revenue with only 12 employees, growing 20–40% annually through a mix of SaaS and embedded fintech revenue. Paul shares why he shifted from a pure SaaS subscription model to embedded payments, increasing average revenue per customer from roughly $9/month to $80–$94/month. He also explains why he avoided VC funding despite operating in fintech, choosing debt financing instead to preserve control, protect optionality, and keep building on his own terms. Key Takeaways Revenue Shift — Moving from SaaS subscriptions to embedded payments increased average revenue per customer প্রায় 10x, from $9 to $80–94 monthly. Control Matters — Owning payment rails gave InvoiceASAP more margin, product flexibility, fraud control, and freedom from platform dependency. Debt Over VC — Paul chose debt instead of institutional equity to preserve board control and avoid forced exits or founder dilution. Vertical Focus — Home service businesses have highly specific cash flow needs that generic payment platforms often misunderstand or ignore. Fintech Reality — Payments infrastructure remains messy, legacy-heavy, and full of poor actors despite modern APIs and slick branding. Quote from Paul Hoeper, Founder and CEO of InvoiceASAP "Most of our competitors are on stripe.we're just exceptionally technically proficient. So we built out our own entire PayFAC infrastructure as close to the line as you can get, but where we control basically all the payment rails.  Stripe is an out-of-the-box product. So if you're looking for a different way of doing payments and billing, you just have to use whatever products Stripe gives you. That's it.  And when you build it the way that we built our product and payments platform, we can do a lot--for our customer and our business model. We have the flexibility to develop instant deposit, merchant cash advances and all different types of products." He tells us how the combined bank is embedding sustainability into its operations, culture and strategy. Christian also explains how he brings his background as a historian to the CSO role — ensuring that clients, shareholders and employees understand the long-term context for current geopolitical volatility. "I don't want to distract from the fact that there is this noise, but I also want to do a bit of a reality check," Christian says. "There are enormously positive movements that we've seen" when it comes to the transition to a low-carbon economy.  Christian also shares his takeaways from the inaugural Climate Week Zurich in May 2026, and what to expect at London Climate Action Week, which kicks off June 20 and includes a focus on climate adaptation alongside continued mitigation.  "We need to do both, and we need to do both well," Christian says.  This interview is the latest installment in our CSO Insights podcast series, where we talk to Chief Sustainability Officers around the world and across industries.
