Marc Ernst, founder and director of HRMinfo.eu, talks in Dutch & French or about 48 minutes with Guido Perremans the CEO of Armonea. Mrs Perremans  also switches continuously and fluently between the language of Vondel and that of Voltaire. With over 60 residential care centres, service flats and residences, Armonea is the largest independent provider of senior care in Belgium. It employs over 6000 people. Armonea is part of the international Colisee group which, in addition to Belgium, is also active in France, Spain, Italy and China and employs over 19,000 people worldwide.Mr Perremans is a former HR director and worked as an HR professional for companies including Alcatel, Attentia and Atalian. At the latter he was European HR director and later became CEO for Belgium and regional manager for the Benelux. He is one of the few, rather rare HR professionals to have made it to CEO. This phenomenon is not typical for Belgium, by the way, but worldwide. Why this happens and what to do about it: that's one of the many themes that were discussed in this new episode of HR Talks, the podcast for those who really have something to say and to tell in the HR field. In addition, the following topics were also discussed - amongst others:is 'HR = Finance = Business'? - The title of Chris Burggraeve's presentation/webinar (Guido Perremans' answer is a resounding YES: according to him, HR should concern itself more with figures (P&Ls & KPIs) and with the business. More than that: if it doesn't make a demonstrable contribution to the business, HR is implausible and actually superfluous because it has no added value). How can HR present itself as an effective business partner and, with good reason, be part of the management committee? (The latter is the exception rather than the rule in smaller and medium-sized companies, and even in 20% of large companies it is not the case)What should be the 'output' of HR ? (According to Guido Perremans, this should be, more than is usually the case today, in the area of ESG: Ecology, Social and Governance. All too often HR limits itself to process-oriented output). This edition of HR Talks is special because it is completely bilingual: Marc Ernst, founder & director of BizInfo/HRMinfo, alternates between Dutch and French with his podcast guest who also switches continuously and fluently between the language of Vondel and that of Voltaire.Sponsors:  MobieTrain, SD Worx, FlowsparksTechnical partner: ThePodcastFactory.org

We are turning back the clock to the very beginning of New York City history with this special two-part episode, looking at the very beginnings of European settlement in the area and the first significant Dutch presence on the island known as Manhattan. The Dutch were drawn to the New World not because of its beauty, but because of its beavers. Beaver pelts were all the rage in European fashion, and European explorers like Henry Hudson reported back that this unexplored land was filled with the animals and their beautiful coats. Of course, people were already living here -- the tribes of the Lenape -- and the first settlers sent by the Dutch -- French-speaking Walloons -- encountered them in the mid 1620s. But relations were relatively good between the two parties at the beginning. Could the native Munsee-speaking people and the first Dutch settlers get along? In this episode, we walk you through the first two decades of life in the settlement of New Amsterdam, confined to the southern tip of Manhattan. What was the island like back then? How did people live and work in a region so entirely unknown to its European inhabitants? boweryboyshistory.com Support the show.

Your loved one pops into the local gas station for some cold drinks. Time passes and they don't return. Panic falls upon you as you frantically search. Years pass and that search for answers has not ceased. The Vanishing is about loss, obsession, and the banality of evil. The original 1988 Dutch/French, suspense, thriller by director George Sluizer was remade in English for American audiences in 1993 by the very same director with very different results. The remake sports an all-star cast with Jeff Bridges, Kiefer Sutherland, Nancy Travis, and Sandra Bullock, but does it measure up to the original starring Bernard-Pierre Donnadieu, Gene Bervoets, Johanna ter Steege, and Gwen Eckhaus? My guest for this month is Herb van der Poll, and he’s joined me to discuss the film I chose for him, the 1988 Dutch–French film The Vanishing. You can follow the show on Twitter @cinemagadfly. Show notes: The director, George Sluizer, didn’t really direct much else besides this film and its remake The soundtrack definitely has a Tears for Fears vibe to it, which is 100% ok with me Herb checked with his Dutch parents to make sure we pronounced Spoorloos correctly Bernard-Pierre Donnadieu is basically perfect as the villain in this film If you enjoy this film, you’d probably also love Alfred Hitchock’s The Lady Vanishes The actress who plays the second girlfriend Lieneke, Gwen Eckhaus, was randomly in a television series in the Netherlands called Spoorloos verdwenen, which I assume is unrelated Getting a compliment on your film from Stanley Kubrick is a big deal to me The first girlfriend, Saskia, is played by Johanna ter Steege. I think I would have enjoyed her in a Kubrick film I want to be very clear that this film is a billion times better than The Blair Witch Project Apparently Curious George is alternately called “Slimme Sjors” and “Nieuwsgierig Aapje” in the Netherlands This film is really nothing like Requiem for a Dream or Audition Seriously, please don’t watch the remake, it’s not even fun ironically I don’t know how much we can blame the remake on the adapted screenplay by Todd Graff, but I would hazard a guess that it’s a lot A more subtle mistake was the changing of cinematographers from the sublime work of Toni Kuhn to the mediocre adaptation by Peter Suschitzky The changes go way, way beyond those of Brazil’s Love Conquers All cut. Also, at least that one includes the entire original film to enjoy Jeff Bridges is usually pretty good, so I’m not sure what happened here. I tend to believe Herb’s Silence of the Lambs theory Milton from Office Space was played by the incomparable Stephen Root R.I.P.D. is really an underrated example of good acting in a terrible film Jeff Bridges is truly terrible here, while Kiefer Sutherland and Sandra Bullock are just really bad This film was two years before The Net, but a year after Love Potion No. 9, so I’m not sure how famous Bullock was Nancy Travis is terrible as well, but her character does provide a lot of the unintentional comedy, so I mind less The award Blood Simple got was the Mel Novikoff award Peter Becker and Jonathon Turell didn’t start the Criterion Collection, but they do run it today To my mind, the Coen Brothers, Barry Sonnenfeld, and Blood Simple definitely belong in the collection I am irrationally excited for the arrival of FilmStruck, and just wish it was here already Rent or buy the film from Amazon Rent or buy the film on iTunes Watch the film on Hulu

Face2Face with David Peck

Listen to with David Verbeek and actor Gregoire Colin talk about their new film Full Contact, our disconnect from reality, how silence can be instructive and PTSD.Film SynopsisTrailer hereIMDBA drone operator tries to deal with his guilt after an air strike gone wrong, in this enigmatic drama from Dutch director David Verbeek. The hypnotic new psychological thriller from director David Verbeek is a startling and extremely unsettling look at a modern man caught in a puzzle that may or may not be of his own making. Verbeek presents the audience with a veritable Rubik’s Cube of a movie that is destined to be the subject of much analysis due to its form of storytelling. Each viewer’s response is bound to be different.Full Contact drills into the world — and deep into the psyche — of a drone navigator who, from his base in the Nevada desert, conducts surgical missile strikes against targets in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Maintaining a distance from his targets that is psychological as well as geographic, Ivan (Grégoire Colin) walks away from these daily missions and spends his off-hours in strip clubs. Until, one day, he hits the wrong location, triggering within him a wave of guilt that sends him reeling into the arms of both a military psychologist and a Vegas stripper. But this is just the start of a psychic odyssey that is unpredictable, moving, and illuminating. There’s a force and authority to Full Contact: it’s wonderfully constructed, with vivid photography and impressive, Lynchian transitions that provoke new trains of thought. The filmmaker’s control is of the essence here. Verbeek captures the robotic, depersonalized behaviour of a man who kills people from the safety of a control centre 12,000 kilometres away, which is a challenge in itself. To deconstruct that character’s personality is an even bigger challenge, and Ivan’s mind, his very existence, is brilliantly broken down for us to reassemble in our interpretations. This is an ingenious, provocative work.BiographyGraduated in Directing from Amsterdam’s Film Academy, in 2005. During his second year there, he directed the feature film Beat with a budget of only 500 euro’s. It was selected for the International Film Festival Rotterdam, as well being released on DVD and nationwide in theatres. The following year, he was asked to direct a television film for the VPRO, resulting in the critically acclaimed Yu-Lan.After graduating he left for China, returning three years later with his second feature film Shanghai Trance; a cinematic portrait of Shanghai that depicts a generation of young Chinese, bedazzled by a city that is changing faster than they can grow up. The film was selected for the Tiger Award Competition at the International Film Festival Rotterdam as well as numerous international festivals. It was released in China in over 250 cinemas and in late 2008, David made the front page of the Volkskrant newspaper for being the first Dutch director to achieve this.He shot third feature film in Taiwan, a Dutch/French/co-production. “r u There” is a multi-dimensional experience that comprises 20% Second Life images. It is an exploration of the virtual world in which the younger generation is so deeply immersed. The film got selected to Un Certain Regard in Cannes.
