How can architects redefine experience through storytelling and space? This week on Practice Disrupted, Evelyn Lee talks with Kate Aoki, architect, educator, and founding partner of Golden Egg Creative, to explore how designers can blend architecture, storytelling, and community to create immersive, intentional experiences. With a career path that's taken her through fine arts, museum design, architecture firms, and now entrepreneurship, Kate shares what it means to craft spaces not just for use, but for memory, meaning, and delight.Kate opens up about her nonlinear journey, starting with a degree in textile design, before eventually returning to her lifelong goal of becoming an architect. Along the way, she worked in galleries, lived abroad, and built a foundation in public and nonprofit spaces. Her deep love for fine art and interpretive design led her back to the Dallas Museum of Art as Head of Exhibition Design, fulfilling a long-held dream. But after four years, she realized the bureaucracy of nonprofit work wasn't a long-term fit. What came next was a leap into co-founding Golden Egg, a firm focused on designing transformative experiences rooted in cultural storytelling and visitor connection.Evelyn and Kate discuss what it takes to launch a niche practice, how to build authentic partnerships with architects and civic institutions, and why experience design is growing in relevance across sectors. Whether developing mobile exhibits for aerospace education or reimagining museum installations, Kate brings a holistic and thoughtful approach to every detail, from lighting and circulation to the words on the wall.“This felt like putting on a pair of shoes that fit perfectly. It's the kind of work I've always been meant to do - blending fine art, architecture, and storytelling into experiences that connect people to something larger than themselves.” – Kate AokiThe episode concludes with reflections on growth, creative courage, and how designers can prototype career pivots by following their curiosity and leaning into interdisciplinary collaboration.Guest:Kate Aoki, AIA, NOMA, is an architect and founding partner at Golden Egg Creative, a design firm specializing in exhibition and experience design. With a background in fine arts, architecture, and interpretive planning, Kate's work bridges storytelling, culture, and space. She previously served as Head of Exhibition Design at the Dallas Museum of Art and has over a decade of experience working across firms and institutions. Her practice centers on community engagement, accessible design, and building memorable experiences for public audiences. Is This Episode for You?This episode is for you if: ✅ You're a designer interested in museum, exhibition, or experience design ✅ You're navigating a nonlinear or interdisciplinary career path ✅ You want to integrate storytelling and interpretation into your design work ✅ You're thinking about starting a small practice aligned with your valuesWhat have you done to take action lately? What am I even doing? From meditation to rain sounds to secret societies...I'm just doing what I know I'm supposed to. Isn't that what we're supposed to do...what we're supposed to do? But how do you know what you're supposed to do? There are ways. In this episode ( I think that's what these are ) of Idiot Mystic, I talk about the Golden Egg Theory, a concept that reminds creators to honor their natural creative process rather than succumbing to the pressures of constant output. Inspired by a conversation with my friend Caldinovin (link to his youtube below), this theory uses the metaphor of a goose laying golden eggs—your ideas, your art, your content. These golden eggs represent the best of what you create, but they can't be forced. In today's unrealistically fast-paced world, driven by social media algorithms and the demand for frequent content, it's easy to feel overwhelmed by the pressure to produce more and faster. I talk about my own experience with burnout, how rushing the creative process impacts quality, and how the joy of creating can fade when the focus shifts to output rather than connection to the work. We'll also explore the science ( well a sentence ) behind creativity and how it thrives when given the necessary time to rest and recharge. Drawing inspiration from legendary animator Hayao Miyazaki, we'll look at the importance of patience in the creative process and why rushing it can lead to burnout. I'll share some apparently practical advice on how to protect your creative energy, avoid the pressure of perfectionism, and let your work flow naturally. This episode is for anyone who has ever felt the weight of content creation (even any other job) or lost touch with the joy of their craft. Also please check out my friend Caldinovin's YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@Caldinovin If this message resonates with you, feel free to share it with others who might need to hear it. And as always, I love hearing from you, so reach out anytime. Until next time, take care of your creativity and yourself. Typically, freelance musicians don't have the benefits many 9-to-5 jobs offer, like retirement accounts or health benefits. But a new group called Golden Egg, in partnership with the Experimental Sound Studio, is trying to change that through a matching grant program funded through the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events. It will select 16 artists to receive a share of $50,000 to put into a retirement fund. Reset learns more about the goals of the effort with Golden Egg's project manager Deidre Huckabay and steering committee member Adrian Ruiz. In this episode of the Inspire Create Manifest podcast, Joe Longo dives into the intriguing concept of the "Bad Apple Effect." Drawing from a study conducted in 2006, Joe explores how just one negative person can dramatically impact a team's morale and productivity through the contagion effect. But it doesn't stop there—Joe flips the script and shows how positivity can be just as contagious. Through an engaging discussion, Joe reveals how our mirror neurons, which often mirror the behaviors of those around us, can work for us or against us. He challenges us to become the "Golden Egg" in our environments, spreading light, gratitude, and positivity to counteract any negative influence. If one negative person can bring down a team, imagine what one positive person can do to uplift it. This week Chapter by Chapter returns as Harry faces off against the CLEARLY most-dangerous dragon. Join Andrew, Eric, Laura and Micah and special Slug Club guest Catherine as they tackle Chapter 20 of Goblet of Fire, “The First Task.” Welcome to the show, Slug Club guest Catherine, who is a college professor of psychology! In the news: Helena Bonham Carter was asked about Miriam Margolyes' recent, controversial remarks about adult Harry Potter fans! We discuss Helena's response. Chapter-by-Chapter continues with Goblet of Fire, Chapter 20: The First Task 7-Word Summary: Dragons are afoot inside Hogwarts' grounds AHHHHHHH Harry “does the right thing” with Cedric. What does this tell us about his character? Mad-Eye Fakey's dark detectors are going off, but not for the reason he says! Professor McGonagall is a mother figure to Harry, and we get an inkling of it in this chapter. Should the Triwizard Tournament feature four of the same dragon? Why does Ludo Bagman keep asking Harry to cheat? Harry and Ron are friends again, and we discuss what was missing in Harry's life while he was gone. Who do we think had the best solution for the First Task? Karkaroff gives Harry a FOUR. Isn't there a rubric or a better way to prevent against this absurd favoritism?! Odds and Ends touch on Poor Poppy Pomfrey, pointed caps, Trelawney nonsense, and a cool connection between books 1, 4 and 7. About DreamWorld "Dreamworld" transports us to a place far beyond imagination, where the fanciful inhabitants of bedtime stories roam free behind magic barriers. But when grief-stricken Cassidy arrives via Father Time's whims, he discovers this wonderland in peril. The villainous Sleeper has shaken Dreamworld from its slumber after the untimely death of Princess Marigold, imposing a cruel new order devoid of “happily ever after.” Yet rebel Jack and his motley crew of fairy tale renegades still fight to restore their realm's happily-ever-afters. These valiant “Redeemers” - Red Riding Hood's feisty granddaughter Scarlett, lovesick ex-pirate Bluebeard, towering gentle giant Mastodon - join Cassidy on his time-twisting quest. Fantasy and reality collide as enemies become allies, innocence turns to experience, and make-believe becomes life or death. Layering postmodern wit atop old world sublimity, “Dreamworld” casts ageless characters in a newly complex light. The big bad wolf howls with regret, Cinderella asserts her dignity under oppression, and the skin-deep hero discovers his commanding heart. By making fantasy painfully real, the creator renews its power to inspire hope. Sword fights and sorcery abound on this spirited cinematic adventure, clearly crafted with epic spectacle in mind. Yet swashbuckling showmanship belies sensitivity. When forces of evil shatter to reveal frightened souls, when a sound heart guides a wayward giant home, “Dreamworld” transcends sensation to find timeless truth. We all must wake up and battle dragons, but castles await those brave enough to dream.
