His 25 year career as a photojournalist came to an abrupt end after having been misdiagnosed with a disc herniation for minor hip pain in 2001. Unfortunately this led to a calamity of errors resulting in two subdural epidural steroid injections using Pfizer's DepoMedrol, an off-label, unapproved application of particulate steroid suspensions. He suffered progressive irreparable harm to his brain, spinal cord and eyes. His efforts at the FDA resulted in new warnings & revisions for all injectable steroids worldwide. We are Donnell Cannon and Jenny O'Meara, two passionate educators. Welcome to Season 2 of The Hummingbird Stories! This season, we're asking the question: What does an extraordinary education look like for every student? We're hosting conversations with the most innovative, equity-minded leaders in education from all across the country — and that includes young people. In our sixth episode, we're exploring learning differences. We all learn differently, yet school is largely designed with the assumption that there can be a standardized way of teaching. That's the model Joann Blumenfeld is trying to disrupt. She's a former North Carolina public school teacher who runs two programs at N.C. State's Science House, where she works with students with learning differences and offers them hands-on STEM experience. Her programs are aimed at increasing post-secondary attainment for students with learning differences and promoting interest in the STEM fields. She was recognized by Time Magazine this Summer as a 2022 Innovative Teacher of the Year. This episode features an interview with Blumenfeld by EdNC.org's Rupen Fofaria. Rupen joins us in the studio to unpack issues confronting students with learning differences. We don't just want to hear from guests on our show. We want to hear from you, too. In every episode on this season of The Hummingbird Stories, we'll pose a question and ask you to weigh in through our Telbee. This week's question asks you to think about a time that you knew you could do something, but you couldn't do it the way you were being asked to do it. What did that look like? What did that feel like? If you could go back, how would you redesign that experience for yourself? Visit sayhi.chat/hummingbird to chime in. We know a lot of “Hummingbirds” who are no longer waiting for change in a system on fire, but rather choosing to do something. We hope they'll inspire you to take real action, no matter how small, toward redesigning schools. An extraordinary education for all young people is possible. But it's going to take all of us to make it happen.

Rupen Fofaria is a storyteller at EDNC.org, where he examines how education policy shows up in classrooms and impacts teachers, students, and families. Rupen has invested much of his time since 2019 reporting stories about literacy instruction in North Carolina.  His stories about the body of research on how kids learn to read take readers inside classrooms, advance student and family narratives, explore challenges for early reading teachers, and study best practices in colleges of education. Prior to joining EdNC, Rupen was an attorney in Raleigh and Chicago, practicing start-up and intellectual property law.  In his (much) younger days, he was a sports writer for ESPN.com, the Raleigh News and Observer, and the Orlando Sentinel. Today’s show starts in an unusual place. With a question: why do bad things happen to good people? The writers of the Bible were probably the first to try to answer that question on paper – in the story of Job. In 1981, Rabbi Harold Kushner wrote a best-selling book about the question. He called it, not surprisingly, “When Bad Things Happen to Good People.” Others have followed. In 2003, I wrote my own play on the subject. My conclusion was probably much the same as others. We don’t—and we can’t—know why these things happen. But an equally important question for all of us is what do we do AFTER bad things happen? What do we do NEXT? Today’s guest, Nation Hahn, faced down the worst kind of tragedy. In today’s episode, he talks about how he is getting through that pain, and finding hope for our state’s future. Nation Hahn is the Board President and Co-Founder of the Jamie Kirk Hahn Foundation, the Chief Growth Officer for EdNC.org, and Digital Director for Blueprint for Athletes. This installment of First in Future is part of a special TV series produced in collaboration with UNC-TV, and recorded in UNC-TV’s Legislative Studio in downtown Raleigh.
