On this episode of the Club + Resort Talks podcast, Rob Thomas speaks with Patricio Misitrano, Co-Founder of The Sports Haus in Norwalk, Conn. The Sports Haus is an indoor club with padel, pickleball and golf sims—the first club to have these three sports under one roof IN THE WORLD! Misitrano, who formerly directed three platinum clubs, talks about padel and how most clubs are not getting ready for what's coming. It happened to a lot of clubs with pickleball and it will happen again with padel if GMs, Boards and Directors don't act proactively. He also peers into his crystal ball, looking 5-10 years in the future to forecast what's on the horizon. Rob and Club + Resort Business Senior Editor Phil Keren discussed projects happening at three different resorts, as well as a club paying tribute to a legendary golfer. Here is an overview of the three projects Rob and Phil reviewed: • Grand Geneva Resort & Spa in Lake Geneva, Wisc., is marking its 30th anniversary with the opening of fully renovated banquet space and meeting rooms. Overall, the resort offers five large ballrooms, four boardrooms, the ballroom foyer, and public restrooms. The rooms are equipped with modern technology and contemporary designs, while all meeting and event spaces are now open and available for meetings and events. • Canyon Ranch Austin, in Spicewood, Texas, will begin construction this summer on a 223,739-sq.-ft. resort. The new resort will have guest lodging, a spa, fitness and dining facilities, a medical clinic, and various administrative and support functions. The Spicewood location will be the fifth Canyon Ranch location to open in the U.S. • Later this year, Horseshoe Bay (Texas) Resort will open a new 3,000 sq. ft. instructional facility called Cap Rock Golf Academy. It will have two indoor bays with Trackman and Toptracer technology, club-fitting services, a club repair room, and a demonstration area with shafts, grips and clubheads. Phil and Rob concluded their conversation by spotlighting an article written by PMQ Pizza magazine Senior Editor Charlie Pogacar (PMQ is owned by the same company as CRB, WTWH Media). Charlie's piece shared the story of how Mill Creek Golf Course, a semi-private club in Mebane, N.C., pays tribute to legendary golfer and two-time U.S. Open champion, Payne Stewart. Stewart died in an airplane accident in October 1999, four months after sinking a par putt on the final hole to win his second U.S. Open title. Pogacar's piece talks about an event that happened shortly after Stewart's victory, which connects the late golfer with Mill Creek. Rob and Phil shared their memories of Stewart, who was known for his unique attire, a brash personality and a fluid swing. Stewart's bravado softened over time and culminated with him congratulating a young Phil Mickelson on becoming a new father just moments after Stewart sank his winning putt at the 1999 U.S. Open.

Keron McHugh may have seemed like just another black-market bad boy when the Feds arrested him in 2010, but they never could have guessed that incarceration would actually be the change that Keron needed to find in himself. In his seven years behind the wall, Keron not only read over 1,000 books (to self-educate) but was encouraged by his cell-mates to pursue the art of tattooing with only the rawest of materials available, due to his incredible ability to not just draw, but create breathtaking artwork. That trajectory gave Keron the grit he needed to sketch out his future as he served out his time, and followed Keron through his release from prison in 2017 and into what is now, an extremely successful skin art business in Mebane, North Carolina, The Cardinal Skin Art and Gallery.

News GILDAN ANNOUNCES CLOSING OF MEBANE DISTRIBUTION CENTER - In an announcement that was made earlier this month, Gildan Activewear stated its plans to close its Mebane, North Carolina distribution center by June 30th. It's a move that will affect 128 local employees but won't necessarily leave them out of a job. According to a press release shared on The Times News, a WARN Act notice filed with the North Carolina Department of Commerce on Feb. 16th said the distribution center would permanently close by June 30, 2022. That specific facility houses the company's unbranded wholesale activewear apparel.Dad Joke: What noise does a witch's vehicle make?Broom Broom 2022 Apparel Trends Jay: Let's introduce our guests today! I hope this isn't too weird for you Aaron but I'm going to be one of the guests too! Am I breaking the rules? I hope so! But the good news is I invited some friends. Adrienne Palmer is editor-in-chief of Screen Printing and BIG Picture magazines. And Jeremy Picker is Creative Director and Founder at AMB3R Creative. Hey guys - what's going on?Aaron: You are breaking the rules, Jay, but I think we can make an exception. When I think of 2022 Apparel trends I think of Styles, Colors and even decorating techniques. Jay: You nailed it Aaron!! It is all three of those things and even the words that we choose to describe the styles, colors and decoration techniques. I was reminded of this when Vicki Ostrom, Futurist and Trend Analyst at SanMar and founder of Trendependent was sharing her wisdom on an education session for PromoKitchen. She shared a reference that I later looked up which was from Adobe called Creative Trends 2022. In that report, Adobe mentions, “The seriousness of life during the pandemic has taken its toll. Tired of the mundane and familiar, people are more carefree, high-spirited, and joyful as they seek re-connection, escape from boredom, and positivity in the new year.”Aaron: Carefree, joyful and seeking re-connection - those all make sense to me! What other trends are likely to have an impact on apparel Jay?Jay: Being active and getting outside has always been important. Studies have found people report a higher level of vitality, enthusiasm, pleasure, and self esteem, and a lower level of tension, depression and fatigue after they have walked outside! I'm sure that's why research revealed exercising outdoors was the most popular fitness trend in 2021. That takes us to 2 very powerful trends that have carried over into 2022: to be outside AND to be active, walking and more involved in fitness. For specific examples of this, ASI recently released an apparel study (last month). The study is based on data that was analyzed in late 2021 using surveys of nearly 40,000 consumers. That data was presented in a collection of the most popular promo products in the U.S. and identifies which states and regions they're most influential in. Outerwear & Performance wear were number 1 and number 2 in every region!
