Police have been called in to investigate the circumstances surrounding the felling of an ancient oak tree in North London. Reports were made to Enfield Council on the 3rd April that the tree, in Whitewebbs Park, had been damaged, sparking local outrage and immediate concerns by the council. Local business owner and campaigner for woodland protection, Lawrence Thor Stephen, from Thors Trees, joins us to explain the ecological significance of the tree, the impact its felling will have on local wildlife, and the community's response to the incident. Plus, the American TV network, HBO, has confirmed the names of the actors taking on the iconic roles of Dumbledore, Hagrid and Snape in their forthcoming TV adaptation of the Harry Potter books. It has already scored the efforts of Enfield Council and placed it below average. With the help of may councillors and council officers they have developed a Climate Action Explorer that collects UK Council Climate Action Plans in a single database, alongside some data on area emissions estimates within the scope of influence of councils. It's being developed by Climate Emergency UK and mySociety, with input from a range of council climate officers, climate specialists, researchers, and journalists. In this Podcast we interview Paul Everitt the former head of arts and culture at Enfield Council. 

Paul is a well respected character across the London Borough of Enfield and beyond and is well know in art and entertainment circles and in this webinar we will interview him about his past job, the manner of his leaving and his hopes and plans for the future. The Enfield Dispatch reported that,

 “Paul's redundancy from the council was made as part of an internal restructure, with his job role made obsolete. He was placed on gardening leave in the summer prior to his official redundancy in October. The civic centre restructure included a shake-up of council arts venues and the way they are managed, which Paul had opposed and voiced concerns about.
Talking about some of the issues he dealt with at the council prior to his departure, Paul described a “toxic culture” of “bullying and intimidation” and said: “When you are working in that toxic culture you are in a state of fear, you don't trust every part of the organisation and it closes in around you. There is nowhere to go. A survival instinct kicks in.”

 Paul said that although other roles were being made available within the council it became clear “they wanted me out of the organisation” and that being put on gardening leave “meant there was no proper transfer” to the council's new culture team. He added: “My whole career is about culture, so being in charge of street cleaning didn't really appeal to me.”

Thames21 aims to transform neglected waterways into areas that everyone can use and enjoy, by using innovative and tailored community approaches. They have developed projects in Enfield where London's first beaver reintroduction is taking place at Forty Hall. They are also part of Enfield Council's Restoration of Enfield Chase project to help create one of London's newest woodlands and at Pymmes Park they will be managing habitat to make sure the wetlands are functioning as they should. We will discuss this with them and also their work around climate change. Wetland restoration and rewinding are a part of their mission to create natural regeneration as well as resilience. Jackie faced abuse when she chaired a meeting of Handforth Parish Council and then shot to national fame through the manner in which she dealt with it. It has made her start a campaign for civility in local government. Here in Enfield we have seen the Leader in breach of the Council Code of Conduct on two occasions and Council meetings have descended into chaos with filibustering and heckling to prevent some Councillors making their voice heard. The Enfield Council chamber has become a bedlam rather than a deliberative chamber. Other local authorities have also behaved in a way that is partisan, hectoring and that shows little respect to rational debate. Yemi Morgan-Raiwe is an experienced strategic project manager with a background in engineering. After relocating from Nigeria to the UK in 2001, Yemi moved into economic development and built a fulfilling career working in regeneration. She took a 5 year career break to look after an elderly relative and to foster, and also took the opportunity whilst on her career break to set up her own organic food manufacturing business! But after a few years, she realised that as good as she was at making food, her sales skills did not match up, and the time was right to look to return to her former career. However, Yemi found that the gap on her CV had become a barrier to finding work, and after a number of months out of work, found that this had began to take a real toll on her mental health. And then by chance, Yemi came across an e-newsletter from Enfield Council where she learned of their Returner Programme, and happily Yemi's return to work journey began to take shape. When she saw the role offered, she felt that “It was everything that I wanted to do, everything that I like to do and everything that I was good at doing”. Four years later, and Yemi is flourishing back at work at Enfield Council, managing a project to build 10,000 homes for people to live and thrive. A local community group in North London has been raising awareness  around the lack of regulation at private cemeteries and their campaign  has caught the imagination of the Ministry of Justice amongst others. A number of MPs are also involved in the campaign and this episode  brings their voices together to explain why it really is important for  the law to change when it comes to private burials and private  cemeteries. Some of the information on this episode may be of an  upsetting nature. Joining me in this special episode is Baroness Meral Ece-Hussein who is  spear-heading the Tottenham Park Cemetery Action Group, Nesil Caliskan  leader of Enfield Council and Sam Johnson founder of the Matchgirls1888  Memorial campaign. In this Podcast we discuss with Cllr Derek Levy ( a former Labour Party member) if the scrutiny and overview of Enfield Council is working properly and whether it is independent and robust. Derek is in a strong position to discuss this as he is a previous chair of the Overview and Scrutiny committee. In 2018 the Leader of Enfield Council Nesil Caliskan was found to have breached the Council code of conduct after suggesting that Cllr Levy. should meet with her regularly to ensure he was “more closely aligned to key decisions” on Labour Group priorities. The overview and scrutiny committee’s role is to hold the council’s decision-makers to account. It is supposed to remain independent of the cabinet and it was felt that this was an attempt to compromise that independence Derek will discuss with us whether that situation has improved or whether Enfield Council is lacking in the proper scrutiny of its affairs - a scrutiny especially needed in times of crisis. In this Podcast we discuss if there is a deficit of democracy on Enfield Council. Democratic discussion, scrutiny and accountability of Government both national and local, are important at all times and especially at times of crisis. During the War, Winston Churchill always respected the House of Commons and made himself available for criticism through the darkest hours. But there are some who believe that this is not happening in Enfield. The Leader of the Council is not following the Churchillian model of holding herself to account. The Cabinet has not met and no attempt has been made to have online digital sessions where accountability can take place - and at a time when there have been questions that need answering. This is a feeling held by a large section of the Labour Party, the Greens, the Lib Dems and the Conservatives. So we have invited representatives of those Parties to discuss this on a Webinar and Joanne Laban for the Conservatives, Rob Wilson for the Lib Dems and David Flint of the Greens have all accepted. We have also written to the Labour Group but have had no answer.. In this Podcast we we will be discussing with Emma Rigby and Adam Mcgibbon how they think civil society can contribute at such a time of crisis Emma mobilised her local community in Enfield almost immediately the corona virus went global and within days she had assembled 600 volunteers. She has also mobilised volunteers to run community safety patrols around schools where students had been mugged. Adam also organised volunteers to help those in need because of the corona crisis in his local are. As well he has run a campaign with others to get Enfield Council to divest from fossil fuels. So how important will this type of mobilisation be as the climate change crisis unfolds on us and how can the community become involved. Originally named Mini-Hollands, Liveable Neighbourhoods was an ambitious project created under Boris Johnson's tenure to encourage active mobility in outer London. Mini-Hollands launched in 2012 as competition for outer London boroughs to win a grant in order to boost cycling and walking in their towns with ideas taken from the Dutch approach to urban design. Three boroughs were awarded £30 million each to transform their town centres and high streets into more livable places. Transport expert and sociology professor Rachel Aldred, who has been researching the impact of the Mini-Hollands programme in one of the three awarded boroughs, Waltham Forest, tell us about the early impact of the scheme. In the second part of the episode, we talk to Sarah Cary, head of Place at Enfield Council, another Mini-Holland grant recipient, about what the programme is achieving for Enfield citizens and her learnings so far.

In the 1980s, Right to Buy was one of the landmark successes of Margaret Thatcher's government, enabling millions of council tenants to buy their own home at a discounted price. The policy changed the financial fortunes of a generation. Since coming to power in 2010, David Cameron's government has reinvigorated the totemic Tory policy, by reinstating big discounts previously withdrawn under Labour - today, some tenants can get over £100,000 off the price of their home. There are some changes to the policy, too: for the first time, the government has pledged to replace homes sold under Right to Buy on a one-for-one basis - but is this target being met? Councils and housing associations tell The Report they don't have the funds to replace homes quickly enough. The programme also hears allegations that opportunist investors are taking advantage of the big discounts now on offer. Not everyone is happy with the revival of Right to Buy - in Scotland, MSPs have voted in favour of bringing Right to Buy to an end, and in North London, Enfield Council has devised a scheme to opt out of selling its newly-acquired housing stock. Meanwhile, the government has plans to make it even easier for tenants to buy their home, adamant that the policy is a vital tool in enabling low-income families to to fulfil their economic aspirations - but with 1.8m households on the social housing waiting list, can the UK afford to keep selling off valuable social housing stock off on the cheap? John Keats was a romantic poet of the early nineteenth century. He was, perhaps, even more "romantic" than the other three giants of the era: Wordsworth, Coleridge, and Shelley. This poem really embodies the exuberance and feeling that is present in all of his best work. It speaks of his wonder after reading the first complete English translation of Homer, by George Chapman. Chapman's version, from around the time of Shakespeare, had long been replaced by the more polished versions of Dryden and Pope; but Chapman's "vigorous and earthy paraphrase"* often does a better job of capturing the feeling of the original Greek. Much have I travelled in the realms of gold, And many goodly states and kingdoms seen; Round many western islands have I been Which bards in fealty to Apollo hold. Oft of one wide expanse had I been told That deep-browed Homer ruled as his demesne; Yet did I never breathe its pure serene Till I heard Chapman speak out loud and bold: Then felt I like some watcher of the skies When a new planet swims into his ken; Or like stout Cortez when with eagle eyes He stared at the Pacific -and all his men Looked at each other with a wild surmise - Silent, upon a peak in Darien. realms of gold - books, with edge of their pages painted gold. Apollo - the god of poetry, wisdom, and song. demesne - domain, property, estate. ken - sight; here it could even mean lens. Cortez - It was, of course, Balboa that discovered the Pacific. Keats was immediately informed of this error, but chose to leave it in. Why he did this is open to speculation: he may have just liked the sound of it better. surmise - An idea formed in the mind (and, often, expressed) that something may be true, but without certainty and on very slight evidence, or with no evidence; a conjecture.
