In this powerful Memorial Day episode of American Potential, host David From is joined by Marine Corps veteran Adam Jahnke, now a Strategic Director at Concerned Veterans for America, to reflect on the true meaning of the holiday through the stories of those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Adam shares deeply personal memories of his fellow Marines—Corporal René Martinez, Lance Corporal Donald Chaplain, and others—who were killed while serving in Iraq. He also talks candidly about the realities of combat, the emotional toll of survivor's guilt, and his journey of recovery after being wounded in 2006. This conversation goes beyond the headlines and ceremonies. It's a sobering, heartfelt reminder that Memorial Day is not just a time for relaxation—it's a time to honor lives lost, to tell their stories, and to recognize the lasting impact on those who served alongside them. Adam challenges us to rethink how we observe Memorial Day—not just with gratitude, but with intention: by reaching out, listening, and ensuring that the sacrifices of our fallen heroes are never forgotten.

What would you sacrifice for freedom? For Monet Bacs, Strategic Director at the LIBRE Initiative in Arizona, her father's answer was clear—everything. In this moving episode, host David From sits down with Monet to explore the legacy of her father, who fled Guatemala in search of opportunity, safety, and a future he couldn't find at home. Arriving in the U.S. as a teenage exchange student who spoke no English, Monet's father built a life rooted in hard work, sacrifice, and unwavering belief in the American Dream. “I'd rather be homeless in America than live under tyranny,” he once said—and he lived those words, choosing struggle in freedom over comfort in oppression. Monet also opens up about her grandfather's horrifying experience in communist Cuba and how her father's heartbreaking death during COVID, amid a broken healthcare system, ignited her passion for meaningful policy reform. Today, she works through the LIBRE Initiative to empower Hispanic communities with access to economic opportunity, education, and better healthcare—carrying forward the legacy of sacrifice and service passed down by her father. It's a powerful story of resilience, purpose, and what it truly means to honor freedom.

The Government wants to see tourism numbers increase as part of its economic growth push. As part of that push, the existing visitor visa scheme will be tweaked to include welcoming ‘digital nomads’. That will allow tourists from visa waiver countries up to nine months to travel around New Zealand while still working for their overseas employer. The scheme has already been greeted with expressions of interest from overseas, but the introduction of digital nomad visas in some countries has contributed to a local backlash against tourism. Today on The Front Page, Strategic Director of the Hotel Council Aotearoa, James Doolan, joins us to discuss the state of tourism in this country, and Spanish journalist Marta Bausells discusses the issues faced in Barcelona as a result of the scheme. Follow The Front Page on iHeartRadio, Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts. Tina Amper, Strategic Director of Geeks on a Beach, and Jeremy Au discussed: 1. Burnout to Community Leader: Tina shared her experience of migrating from the Philippines with an engineering degree from the University of San Carlos to California's booming tech industry in the 1990s. She excelled in product marketing and business development roles, but ultimately burned out after years of travel and high-intensity work. By 2010, her mother's declining health prompted her to take a sabbatical and return to her hometown Cebu, which was being transformed by the growing business process outsourcing (BPO) industry. This proved to be fertile ground for her exploration and cultivation of a thriving local tech community. 2. Geeks on a Beach: Geeks on a Beach (GOAB) launched in 2013 and started as a casual idea between Earl Valencia, cofounder of IdeaSpace and QBO, and Paul Pajo, a Filipino tech evangelist, to create a tech conference blending work and leisure on the beach. With participants ranging from 400-500 people annually, GOAB has become a key platform for fostering collaborations between startups, investors, and business leaders. Tina emphasized the importance of support from government bodies like the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT). 3. 12M Filipino Diaspora Reverse Culture Shock: Tina's return to her motherland after living in the US involved overcoming reverse culture shock while also reconnecting with her roots. She shared her advice for the 12 million strong Filipino diaspora considering a return home. She discussed how she personally found her purpose by contributing to the local tech community through initiatives like TechTalks.ph. Jeremy and Tina also explored various community archetypes of lurkers vs. champions, paid membership communities vs. casual tech meetups and financial sustainability strategies. Sales is the lifeblood of every business. It's almost impossible to scale your recruitment company without a consistent flow of new business. Yet many recruitment agencies are lacking an effective and repeatable sales process. My next guest, Alex Elliott, has designed an effective client acquisition system that yields consistent, predictable results. It enables him and his team to focus their efforts on the right things, optimize the customer experience, and make data-driven decisions to drive revenue growth and business success. However, designing and executing an effective business development system is easier said than done! In this episode, Alex reveals how they designed their client acquisition funnel around four core sales processes. Alex also shared best practices and tips on how to consistently share value-adding LinkedIn posts, and how to structure your business for scale. This is Alex's second time on the show. The last time was way back in December 2019, before the pandemic. He shared the story of co-founding Liquid Personnel with Jonathan Coxon and how they scaled to a 100M revenue business and became the number one market leader in their space before exiting via a sale to Private Equity. Alex is now an investor and Strategic Advisor with Strive, headquartered in Manchester. Strive provides Go To Market professionals for disruptive VC-backed tech startups and scaleups across EMEA and the US. Episode Outline and Highlights [03:46] The three steps to consistently post good LinkedIn content. [10:30] How to structure an effective LinkedIn post using the AIDA formula. [14:18] Mark and Alex share perspectives on LinkedIn posts' return on effort. [19:15] Why Alex invested in Strive Recruitment. [23:30] Alex discusses how they structure their business for scale. [36:15] The four core sales processes to design an effective client acquisition system. [44:53] How to use Sales KPIs the right way to get better results. [55:18] Core marketing channels that Alex's team focuses on. Consistently Sharing Value-Adding Linked Content with a Strong Opening Hook Posting on LinkedIn consistently can build your professional brand, expand your network, attract top talent, engage with your audience, and promote your organization. If you are a recruitment business leader, you should set an example for your team. Alex shared his thought process on why he consistently posts: “I think because I've gone into the SaaS space … one of the things I noticed early on sort of going into that industry, a lot of the leaders, the sales leaders, the go-to-market leaders, and also just the CEOs within that space take personal responsibility for building their own brand. Which in turn has a huge, potentially huge positive impact on the business's brand. So I think I saw that and I was kind of motivated to see whether we could do the same.” Alex revealed his three steps to be consistent in creating good LinkedIn posts: Decide to make posting on LinkedIn a habit. Create a workflow. For example Alex writes all his LinkedIn content for the week on Sunday afternoon. Bank your ideas. Alex has a note on his phone where he captures ideas throughout the week. Then when he sits down to create content, he can bang out multiple high-quality posts quite quickly. He elaborated on how he formulates his content using the AIDA (attention, interest, desire, action) principle. We also talked about our perspectives on the return on effort on LinkedIn posting. How to Structure Your Recruitment Agency for Scale with Career Pathways “We have multiple career pathways… If you want to scale a recruitment business, you can't just keep adding heads and heads and heads. You have to build some of the infrastructure which is going to support that growth. One of those things is career pathways.” I am 100% aligned with Alex regarding the importance of creating a well defined career path for your team members. For Strive - it is about ensuring that a framework or path is in place for their new joiners. Specifically, they design these paths to ensure that they work on their team's strengths, rather than the usual progression of biller to manager. Alex shared the career path layout for their team members covering delivery, business development, account management, technical, and management routes. We also discussed how the 360, 270, or 180 models fit their organization. How to Design an Effective Sales Strategy and Funnel Another topic that I love in this conversation is how Strive have designed their client acquisition and sales funnel. With degrees in design, gerontology, environmental psychology, and community planning, Esther Greenhouse brings a unique perspective to housing and communities. Learn about Silver to Gold's Enabling Design Approach that eases the staffing crisis by creating environments that support independence and allow people of all ages to flourish. About Esther Esther Greenhouse, CEO of Silver to Gold Strategic Consulting, is a strategist and environmental gerontologist bringing a unique constellation of experience and expertise in design, gerontology, environmental psychology, and planning, to help organizations and communities excel at meeting the needs of those 50+ and enable them to THRIVE! Her unique Enabling Design Approach informed AARP International's Equity by Design initiative, as well as the design of the nation's first elder-focused Emergency Room at the request of Dr. Bill Thomas. Esther co-authored the American Planning Association's Aging in Community Policy Guide, is an industry scholar for the Cornell Institute for Healthy Futures and served as the Strategic Director for one of the nation's first Age-Friendly Centers for Excellence. The International Well Building Institute has appointed Esther to their newly formed Investing for Health Advisory. For 10 years she was the primary caregiver for her mother. Key Takeaways Environments impact the functioning and well-being of older adults, for better or worse. An optimal fit between the person and environment allows the highest level of independence. “Environmental press” (poor fit) pushes people to an artificially lower level of functioning that causes “forced frailty” and is costly to society. Status quo environments are designed for a small subset of the population—the average height male between the ages of 20 and 40. We design for the highest physical cognitive and sensory abilities; everybody else has to adapt. In 2010 we had approximately seven potential caregivers for every older adult. By 2050, it will be less than three. Enabling Design leverages the built environment to reduce demand for long-term care.

“How can we keep pace?,” asks Josh Wheeler, Strategic Director, Customer Service and Experience Portfolio, Reuters Events. Wheeler argues that customers compare their experiences, not only with direct competitors but with all the companies they do business with, from airlines to insurance companies. The benchmark is set across a huge number of interactions, where those who are not looking at the whole horizon will fall behind. With that in mind, Wheeler tells us about four keys to service and experience and how these four keys will be among the things explored at the upcoming Customer Service & Experience West 2023 to be held in San Diego, May 10-11, 2023. In this podcast, Wheeler discusses the four keys: mature your data-driven strategy, redefine the agent experience, scale support with innovative technology and enshrine CX at the heart of the business. The event promises to bring new ideas and perspective to professionals charged with delivering CX. We learn the that the conference will look directly at where and how to automate, and to deliver a successful digital transformation. https://events.reutersevents.com/customer-service/customer-service-san-diego
Why Investment in CX is Even More Important this Year Shep Hyken interviews Josh Wheeler, Strategic Director for Reuters Events Customer Service & Experience. He shares findings from the 2023 State of Experience & Service Report and what businesses should prioritize in CX and EX to remain competitive. Top Takeaways: · Learn from outside of your industry. You will commoditize what you offer if you only learn the best practices and strategies within your industry. If you learn from the best across all industries, you can go from being the best in the industry to becoming world-class. · Your customers don't compare you to your direct competitors. They are comparing you to the best experience they receive from anywhere, from any type of company, and bringing those insights back to what's happening with their relationship with your business. For example, they compare the convenience of online e-commerce companies with their healthcare provider and expect the same quality of experience. · According to the State of Experience & Service Report, here are the most important customer-centric objectives for 2023: 1. Analyzing and using customer feedback. 42% of respondents see “translating insights into action” as their biggest concern when it comes to data management. 2. Improving the quality of customer support experiences. 3. Creating frictionless experiences, especially across different channels. Take every opportunity to remove friction. The easier company to do business with is going to win. · Meet your customers where they are. Communicate with them using the channels that they prefer. For example, if your customers are from older generations who prefer to use the phone over other channels, going fully digital will have a negative impact on customer experience and loyalty. Companies need to teach their customers the easiest and most frictionless way to get the answers they're looking for. · Plus, Josh shares more stats and insights from the 2023 State of Experience & Service Report including how perks and compensation ranked in what makes employees happy. Tune in! Quote: "Your customers aren't confined to one industry. They interact with dozens of organizations and will compare their best experiences in any industry to their experiences with you." He leads the end-to-end development and production of in-person conferences, virtual events, and thought leadership content for customer service & experience professionals across North America. Today I interview my friend Tori Boats who is an executive coach and keynote speaker. We discuss:How Tori got clarity on her coaching niche and how she discovered this after not having fun anymore in her prior job.How she re-wrote the rules of success for herself and how she decided to move into something new and scary. How coaching is different and how it can help leaders grow when they have so much on their plate already. How to more realistically define success when your “money demon” mindset gets in the way.How to have fun, take aligned action and detach yourself from the outcome when there is a lot of cash involved and there is so much on the line.Tori explains the model she uses in coaching so you can grow your business while still finding meaning, feeling happy, and being creative. As a 25-year tech founder turned executive coach and keynote speaker, Tori Boats uses the visionary advantage system to help business owners of rapidly growing companies rewrite their own rules for success & move forward with unshakable confidence so they can crush their next big milestone without missing out on life. As a serial entrepreneur with a Masters in Business Administration and a Masters in Computer Science from Johns Hopkins University, Tori built a successful 8-figure software development and hardware engineering business serving the U.S. Intelligence Community and was the VP and Strategic Director of $1.5B in business opportunities for a Fortune 250 company. And when chasing her 'money demon' nearly killed her, she learned that thriving as an entrepreneur takes much more than ambition, especially with the unique demands as a female owner in a male-dominated field while raising 3 young kids. That's why she's dedicated her latest venture to helping business owners grow companies they actually like and build positive support networks, because you don't have to choose between creating wealth or being happy. When she's not creating fun experiences & retreats for her CEO clients, she can be found driving her mom-taxi around West Friendship, MD, binging the latest supernatural tv-series, and baring her soul writing songs - very therapeutic!Come challenge your own thinking about how to grow a successful business at https://ToriBoats.com/You can find Tori's videos on LinkedIn at https://LinkedIn.com/in/ToriboatsShe posts on IG & everywhere @ToriBoatsConnect with Jennifer to get more Clarity & Confidence in your Biz!Website: www.jenniferjakobsenlifecoaching.comInstagram: @jjakobsenlifecoachJoin my free Facebook group: Clarity to Cash for Female Coaches and Entrepreneurs10 Journal prompts to more clarity and more cashJoin my weekly Coffee Chat every Thursday at 12pm PST by signing up for free HERE.Join my weekly Coffee Chat every Thursday at 12pm PST by signing up for free HERE.

In Episode 91 of the Charity Charge Show, Stephen talks to David Street, Strategic Director Next Gen Organizing of Bread for the World, whose mission is to be a collective Christian voice urging our nation's leaders to end hunger at home and abroad. Stephen and David Street talk about the mission of Bread for the World, Street's work with adolescence and social media through his nonprofit P.E.N. (Promote, Enrich and Nurture) DMV, and the process of setting up a new nonprofit. David Street is a native of Washington, D.C. and has over 13 years of grassroots organizing and engagement experience. He also serves as the Strategic Director of Next Gen Leadership for Bread for the World. Outside of his work in the organizing space, Street also serves as the Executive Director for P.E.N. (Promote, Enrich and Nurture) DMV, a non-profit that specializes in mentoring and social media training with high school students and aspiring leaders living in Washington, D.C. Street received his Bachelors in Political Science from North Carolina A & T State University and holds a Masters in Theology from Wesley Theological Seminary. David Street on starting a nonprofit: It took me about a year to get my nonprofit off the ground; because I interviewed people who had already set up nonprofits, who were already in a similar space, and I just asked a whole bunch of questions. I did about 8-10 interviews with people who had small to medium sized nonprofits. I've been working in nonprofits all my life so I was able to tap into the vast set of knowledge that my colleagues have. I also did other types of research, along with bringing people together and asking questions. After this year of research, we then filed the paperwork and all the other legal aspects. Since we took the time beforehand we already knew what our mission was going to be and who from that advisory board during the planning process would transfer into the board of directors. In that time we also had acquired seed funding, so it wasn't just like we only existed on paper, we had actually acquired some funding from a couple of local churches. I would advise others to do their homework, reach out to people and don't just jump in there; figure out if you have a niche and if there isn't a niche, create one.
