On the docket this week are: ✨ Three fatal traffic accidents in just four days in Borgarfjörður, Berufjörður and Flúðir. We discuss road conditions and the state of the road system in general.✨A tourist was rescued by helicopter after having been stuck in a storm for three days in his tent in the middle of the Icelandic highlands. In March. In Iceland. We ask: Why?✨ The new Mayor of Reykjavík was harshly criticized by union leaders because of an extra $6000 she gets monthly for chairing the Icelandic Association of Local Authorities, which meets about twice a month. We discuss whether or not the Icelandic political class is collectively engaging in grifting.✨ The new coalition government asked the public how they thought the Icelandic state could cut costs and increase efficiency. So, kinda like an Icelandic version of DOGE just without the whiff of the extra constitutional. The tangible results from the public input were released on Friday and unsurprisingly those on the receiving end of proposed cuts were not happy. A former Mayor of Clare is urging the next representatives of Clare in Dáil Éireann to "start a conversation" around the funding of local authorities. The outgoing head of Clare County Council has described the current funding model as "piecemeal" following the adoption of the Council's almost €192 million budget for the coming year. At first glance, there appears to be little to complain about as Clare's elected councillors have agreed to adopt a Revenue Budget for 2025 of €191.9 million - an increase of €5.5 million on last year. Many present at the special meeting at Áras Contae an Chláir have sounded their discontent with the level of funding the local authority receives however, with several accusations made that county councils are being treated by the Government as "the poor relation". A standout aspect of this year's budget - and a welcome development for struggling local businesses - is that there will be no increase in commercial rates in the coming year. Council Chief Executive Pat Dowling, whose tenure comes to an end next week, doesn't think keeping rates at the same level will be tenable for long. The 2025 budget has seen Housing and Building projected expenditure soar by €3.9 million from last year, while Road Transport and Safety expenditure is up by €1.8 million and Water Services expenditure is down by almost €1.5 million. Maghera Fianna Fáil Councillor Pat Hayes insists rather than punishes traders by increasing commercial rates, more funding is needed from central government. Addressing councillors at the meeting, Chief Executive Pat Dowling said "the additional services, infrastructure and the impact of inflation over the last Council term explains the challenges we have faced and will face over the term of the new Council". Clonlara Independent Councillor Michael Begley says there doesn't seem to be any consideration for local authority funding at a national level.

The week of thanksgiving is one of the busiest times of the year. Students are returning home from college, deer hunters are heading to camp, and black Friday shopping keeps the roads busy. Since this weekend will kick off rifle deer season, Fritzi Schreffler, Safety Press Officer with District 8 Penndot suggests paying close attention to the roads and deer. “It is also mating season for the deer. So, they are off in search of love and not paying attention to what the drivers are doing, obviously. So, if you're in an area that is heavily populated by deer, you definitely want to be on the lookout in case they're running out, “said Schreffler. Lt. Adam Reed, Director of the Communications Office for the Pennsylvania State Police, says during this time of year drivers get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the holidays. “They get caught up in the rush to go see family for Thanksgiving or the shopping crush prior to Christmas. People get busy, and it's important that people take a step back and realize that their safety is the most important and the gifts could weigh the travel if it takes an extra few minutes to get to your destination. So be it. Take an extra minute, take a deep breath, and get where you're going safely, “said Reed. Reed says one of the biggest causes of crashes he sees is speeding. “Two of the biggest causes of crashes that we see, number one is speeding. And number two is follow too closely, especially when a driver is doing both of those things at once. It's a recipe for disaster, really. So even things that that might seem mundane, like don't speed, don't follow the car in front of you too closely. Going back to the last topic there, it's easy to forget about. It's easy to have that get lost in the in the rush of the holiday season. So slow down and leave some distance between your vehicle and the car in front of you, “said Reed.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

There are nearly 70,000 children in the UK who are in foster care. Foster carers main concern has to be the children they look after, including many who have experienced neglect and trauma. But they are self-employed, so there are also financial considerations, from allowances and fees, to tax returns and receipts. In this programme we'll hear from charities, foster carers and care leavers. We'll also discuss new analysis from the Fostering Network, which found foster carers face a post code lottery when it comes to fees they're paid. Foster carers are given an allowance to pay for clothes and food - but they're also usually paid extra on top to recognise their time and skills. Those fees aren't fixed though, and local authorities can each individually decide how much to award.Using freedom of information requests the charity found 60% of local authorities across the UK are paying foster carers the equivalent of less than £5 an hour based on a 40 hour week. Local Authorities are given funding from central government and the devolved nations – the told us they are reviewing support for foster carers. Pinergy, Ireland's energy transition company, announced on Thursday (26th September 2024) a three-year partnership agreement with Connacht GAA, becoming the official energy partner of the association. This landmark partnership underscores Pinergy's commitment to supporting Irish sport and promoting sustainability within the GAA community nationwide. Through this partnership, Pinergy will work closely with Connacht GAA, its clubs, and the Centre of Excellence to implement innovative energy solutions aimed at reducing energy consumption, lowering costs, and shrinking their carbon footprint. Pinergy estimates that it can help the Connacht GAA community save up to €2 million on energy costs over the next three years. Joining Pinergy and Connacht GAA at the announcement were representatives from across the province including Connor Gleeson of Galway GAA, Kathyrn Sullivan of Mayo LGFA, James Dillon of Roscommon GAA, Ciara Walsh of Sligo Camogie and Pat Carty of Ireland Wheelchair Hurling, representing the four codes across Football, Ladies Football, Hurling and Camogie. Connor Gleeson joined Galway Bay FM's Darren Kelly for a chat about Saturday's Bon Secours Senior Football semi-final against Salthill/Knocknacarra and to look back at Galway's All-Ireland championship campaign. == Throw-in at Tuam Stadium on Saturday (28th September) is 4.45pm and we'll have LIVE coverage here on Galway Bay FM. == As part of the agreement, Pinergy will install solar panels at the Connacht GAA Centre of Excellence, building upon the Centre's existing relationship with Pinergy as their supplier of green electricity and their energy measurement system, Acutrace. This installation is based on a 5-year term and will significantly reduce the Centre's reliance on traditional energy sources and serve as a shining example of sustainability for GAA clubs across the province. Speaking on the announcement, Pinergy Chief Commercial Officer Daire Keating commented: “We're incredibly excited to team up with Connacht GAA, an organization that truly embodies community spirit and sporting excellence. This partnership goes beyond simply supplying energy; it's about empowering clubs with the tools and knowledge to make smart, sustainable choices that benefit both their bottom line and the environment. CEO Connacht GAA, John Prenty shared his enthusiasm, stating, “This partnership with Pinergy is a game-changer for our clubs across the province. The potential savings from Pinergy offering supply of this 100% renewable electricity coming from Cork and the potential for solar for our clubs in the province are significant, allowing us to reinvest those funds back into what matters most – Our games, Our players and Our communities. We're also proud to be taking a leadership role in sustainability within the GAA, and we hope to inspire other counties to follow suit.” Pinergy is encouraging all Connacht GAA clubs and county boards to #OwnTheMoment and sign up for a free energy consultation to explore how they can benefit from this partnership. The county boards in Connacht will be hosting Sustainability Information evenings with key expert partners such as Pinergy, Futurefit, SEAI, Mywaste and the Local Authority experts from Climate Action Officers, Heritage and Biodiversity officers to name a few. These evenings will be commencing in mid-October and roll out in the counties across the Winter and Spring. A new website will help the public access information on over 1,000 local government services provided by the 31 local authorities. LocalGov.ie, launched by Minister of State with responsibility for Local Government and Planning, Alan Dillon, is the biggest online directory of local authority services ever developed in Ireland. The roll out of the site comes as research shows 60% of people have found it difficult to find the information they need from their local authority area. "This will change that and will act like a 'sat nav', pointing people to the exact services about which they need information in plain, accessible language," said Minister Dillon. "It is a game-changer in connecting local Government with citizens and explains the entire process of how to access services, from motor tax, dog licences and home adaptation grants to outdoor leisure amenities and library services. "Crucially, it will guide and signpost people to information which can improve their lives in a practical way, and the communities in which they live." One of the primary aims of the site is to provide a database of national grants and funding opportunities for individuals, sporting clubs and businesses - and a guide on how to access these in the users' local area. Funding, for example, is available for a wide range of activities including anti-litter and anti-graffiti initiatives, historic structures, mobility aids and vacant properties. The website also provides an advisory role - offering information on subjects including responsible dog ownership. The site, which will be regularly updated as information and legislation changes, was launched at the Local Government Management Agency (LGMA) offices in Usher's Quay. It will be continually reviewed and updated with new information and development enhancements, in line with the Digital and ICT Strategy 2030 - Digital Local Government: Working for Everyone. "Not so long ago, local authority information came in the form of newsletters, but LocalGov.ie is the new, trusted home for every local authority service available in Ireland, under one website," said Patricia Liddy, Project Board Chair of LocalGov.ie. "Research shows that many people do not associate the work that local authorities do with the Local Government sector and this site aims to transform that." The 2023 Local Government Services report revealed there is high public awareness of key services such as footpaths, street cleaning and street lighting. But just over half surveyed in the report know that local authorities are also responsible for environmental protection (55%), motor tax collection (54%), tourism and events (54%) and monitoring waterways and beaches (50%). "LocalGov.ie is aimed at everyone and designed to eliminate confusing language and out-of-date information, the goal was to make it accessible, easy-to-read and easy to navigate and will also act as an access route to the websites of all 31 Local Authorities in Ireland," added Ms Liddy. Visit the website, which is now live, at localgov.ie. More about Irish Tech News Irish Tech News are Ireland's No. 1 Online Tech Publication and often Ireland's No.1 Tech Podcast too.
