There are films that touch a necessary nerve and there are those that furnish reality so elaborately that we find it too overwhelming to process. Today's Lost and Found, Rakhee Sandilya's Ribbon is one such film. Starring India's first web series star Sumeet Vyas (of Permanent Roommates fame) and Kalki Koechlin in the lead, Ribbon shows the mirror to the debilitating world we live in today. From being downsized at work to the precarious position of being a parent to an adolescent child, it's all there and it's all pretty bleak. The film revolves around a young couple grappling with job loss, the inevitable derailing of one's career following maternity, and how the lead pair manage to pull through as a couple while dealing with a major personal setback. Ribbon apprises us of several present-day challenges in one's personal and professional life. For instance, opting for maternity leave is depicted as the easiest way to terminate one's career or at least set it back by a few years. Then, the daunting idea of not being able to protect one's child from society's predators can make any parent feel like a failure. But the overarching message that we can get by as long as we have each other's back is reassuring and offers some hope in the face of adversity. Before you add this one to your playlist, here's a disclaimer: Ribbon may not be suitable for those who find subjects such as child abuse non-palatable or offensive, and viewer discretion is advised. This flick is currently streaming for you to watch on Eros Now, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ Hotstar, Jio, Google Play.Well that's the OTTplay Lost and Found film Ribbon for today, I shall be back again tomorrow with another critically acclaimed , yet lesser-known film. This is your host Nikhil out of here for now.
Coming-of-age Indian movies about childhood have mostly focused on issues that adults believe children deal with. But there have also been sensitive films such as Rockford and Taare Zameen Par that closely followed adolescent life, with all its challenges and joys. And today's Lost and Found, which is Sanjivan Lal's Bubble Gum, is surely a lesser-known gem that makes for a telling portrait of childhood. Set in '80s Jamshedpur, the film introduces us to an average group of pre-teens running through the emotions synonymous with their age group. Negotiating jealousy, competitiveness and even fondness for a significant other which is based on nothing, in particular, are just some of the themes this film ventures into. It also carves some very reasonable and liberal onscreen parents played with considerable heft by Sachin Khedekar and Tanvi Azmi. In fact, one of the better lines in the film also happens to be on parenting. It goes, “Humein pata hona chahiye, ki patang mein kab dheel chodni hain aur kab kaatni.” This loosely translates as “[As parents], we must know when to crack down on our children and when to cut them loose.”Bubble Gum also delves into the many innocent fears, pleasant realisations and silly delights that tickled us as children. It also presents how these fears sometimes trigger minors to consider desperate measures as it seems like the only way out. Aside from delivering as a comforting slice of life watch and a mood-lifter, Bubble Gum also offers some unique parenting pointers to chew on. If you haven't watched this flick yet then do so on Eros Now , Google Play and Youtube. That's the OTTplay Lost and Found for today's podcast. I shall be back again with another critically acclaimed film but lesser-known. This Is your host Nikhil signing out for now.
Hansal Mehta's Aligarh is based on the real-life story of the Aligarh University professor who was persecuted and laid-off for his sexual orientation and translates as a heart-breaking story of discrimination. When a local news channel manages to shoot this professor allegedly having sex with a rickshaw puller, he's singled out and ostracised and eventually, compelled to consider extreme measures.Headlined by Manoj Bajpayee, who plays the wronged academic and Rajkummar Rao, who plays a journalist hopeful of getting to the bottom of the affair, Aligarh is a telling portrait of homophobia and a society that is blatantly intolerant of sexual minorities. The film also draws a compelling account of loneliness and how those who must fend for themselves get by with little help or support. But what really shines through in this film is Bajpayee's ability to slip into his character with such immersion that you can weigh in on his thoughts and feelings in almost every single frame. Mehta's immersive narrative and style of storytelling allow us a ringside view of the proceedings without manipulating how we process or accept this story. Aligarh is surely one of Mehta's most compelling works, along with Citylight and Shahid. Some may feel that this film speaks for those who are routinely marginalised on account of their sexuality and makes a case for being more inclusive. But Aligarh also documents a man's struggle to survive and be accepted for who he is, at a point when his right to have a private life has been violated. If you haven't watched this gem do so now on OTT. It is streaming now on Eros Now, Zee5, Aitel tv, JioAlright, that's the end of this podcast OTTplay Lost and Found, I shall be back again with a brand new film critically acclaimed but lesser-known, until then it's your host Nikhil signing out.

Talking about Mirzapur Season 2:Rajyasree: Munna's character is very important because… Abhinandan: Because he has no character.Rajyasree: He really has no character, he's a horrible character.Abhinandan: That's why it was funny. You don't have to justify my joke, it was implicit in the joke.Rajyasree: No, no, you have to explain. Hindi cinema has taught me.Abhinandan: Making a joke in front of you is really like “Bhains ke aage been bajana”.Rajyasree: Now you're calling me a bhains? I've told you don't fat-shame all the time.Abhinandan: It's a muhawra in Hindi.Rajyasree: Either you're calling me black or you're calling me fat, it's so shameful to do this to a person.Abhinandan: Can we move on?Rajyasree: Obviously, because I'll start crying otherwise.Rajyasree and Abhinandan burst out laughing. This and a whole lot of other stuff awful and awesome as Abhinandan Sekhri and Rajyasree Sen discuss the films Rebecca and Borat Subsequent Moviefilm; the web series The Queen's Gambit and Mirzapur Season 2; and Eros Now's controversial Navratri ad campaign.Tune in!Timecodes00:08: Introduction01:51: Borat 215:00: Letters from listeners17:27: Rebecca29:15: Eros Now controversy32:36: Mirzapur Season 244:28: Letters from listeners47:33: The Queen's Gambit See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In this week’s podcast, Abhinandan Sekhri is joined by Anand Vardhan and Manisha Pande. Also joining them is political journalist and author of Politics of Jugaad: The Coalition Handbook, Saba Naqvi. The discussion kicks off with Saba’s new book. Saba also briefly describes the farmers' coalitions and the constant splitting of party members from the Congress that kept it at an unstable position in UP. “Most of us who follow politics seem to believe the change happened with Mandal and Mandir…[however] The history of this [coalitions]… goes back to the late sixties,” she says.Abhinandan asks Anand whether coalitions can form a “stable government”. He also asks him about Bihar politics. “Coalitions depend on the reciprocity of interest,” responds Anand, and further mentions that politicians must embody reciprocal interests in case situations for a coalition arise. He also mentions that the only benefit with “stable governments” is that the policies for different stakeholders are kept constant and that these stakeholders know what to expect from the Budget.Anand also talks about the “dramatic stage in Lalu’s family”—sibling rivalry between brothers Tej Pratap Yadav and Tejashwi Yadav. Saba seeks Anand’s opinion on Kanhaiya Kumar contesting from Begusarai. He thinks Kanhaiya Kumar has a chance and remarks: “Anyone who comes from Bihar in his twenties is a careerist.” He also mentions the demographic factors, political history of Begusarai and determinants of other contestants like Giriraj Singh and Tanveer Hasan.Further, Abhinandan asks Saba about the election campaign in UP. She responds: “there is no one campaign …the demographics are changing seat by seat." She lists a few unexpected elements that have happened like the SP and BSP coalition, Priyanka Gandhi’s arrival, Muzaffarnagar’s muslim vote turn-out and the likes. The panel discusses the spread of propaganda through popular culture like Eros Now’s series Modi: Journey of a Common Man and Omung Kumar’s movie, PM Narendra Modi. Manisha says: “EC’s model code of conduct applies to the Government that it cannot use Doordarshan to propagate Narendra Modi’s speeches,” as that uses taxpayer’s money. However in the case of such movies, “…These are private citizens who can launch a movie whenever they want to.”“The role of propaganda or any form of political communication can be of a force multiplier…it cannot win you elections,” remarks Anand. He believes that the consumptions of news and the influence it exerts on the voting decisions of people is not directly correlated. Saba, however, disagrees. “There is too much data to the contrary to show that television slants and propaganda influence voters,” says Abhinandan. With reference to Congress’ manifesto on AFSPA, Manisha tells us that it reads: “they will remove immunity for enforced disappearance, sexual violence and torture,” and the panel believes it to be “absolutely reasonable”. Anand mentions that the manifestos are majorly for electoral significance and academic value, however, with the proliferation of media there has been many discussions on the issues that gives various undertones to it.Other topics broadly discussed in this podcast include NaMo TV, Vivek Oberoi’s appearance in news interviews, a few election speeches made by different politicians, references made to various historical events in the politics of UP and Bihar, Mayawati’s affidavit and many passing anecdotes given by our NL gang. In its 90th episode, The Awful and Awesome Entertainment Wrap takes you on an entertaining ride of some of the worst and best developments of the week. Our hosts Abhinandan Sekhri and Rajyasree Sen talk about two novels, latest shows on Netflix and an awful short film recommended for the mufatkhors! The Twice-Born: Life and Death on the Ganges is a novel written by Aatish Taseer whom Abhinandan calls one of the finest writers of his time. The book is about the Brahmin mind, Benaras, and modern politics. Another book discussed in this episode is Red Birds by Mohammed Hanif. The book is about America's war politics and its victims. Both books are highly recommended by our hosts.Taking a dive from a very highbrow discussion, Rajyasree takes us to Eros Now's latest drama series Smoke. A drama set in Goa and revolving around drugs, Rajyasree says Smoke is one of the most well-shot series and has a Narcos feel to it. The cast of this crime drama includes Tom Alter, Gulshan Devaiah, Kalki Koechlin and Jim Sarbh. Sen also thinks the series is as good as Sacred Games and has an Anurag Kashyap vibe to it.Moving on, we discuss Hasan Minhaj's latest series on Netflix, Patriot Act. Abhinandan and Rajyasree believe Hasan's style of stand-up comedy is different but quite predictable, unlike comedians like Stephen Colbert. With only two episodes out, maybe it's too early to judge what Patriot Act has in store but it's a remarkable feat for an American-Indian to have his own show on Netflix.Another recommendation coming from Netflix is BBC series Bodyguard starring Richard Madden and Keeley Hawes. They also discuss the latest trailer of Kedarnath starring Sara Ali Khan and Sushant Singh Rajput and how it was successful in piquing viewers' interest. The podcast also talks about a short film, The Playboy Mr Sawhney, which turned out to be a torturous watch. Our surprise at why Rock On 2 has been met with such a spectacular critical and commercial failure, and why we think the movie is still worth watching. Why 'Baar Baar Dekho' is in fact a one-time watch - but still deserves at least that one watch. While the acting and script leaves a lot to be desired, the overall concept and message - plus the cinematography - deserves to be applauded. A big reason for that is the performances of Abhay Deol, Jimmy Sheirgill, Piyush Mishra - pretty much the entire case barring Diana Penty, who does tend to overact. 3. In a year littered with disappointments, Dishoom might be amongst the worst. Despite Varun Dhawan's best efforts, a hapless script and low-quality graphics make Dishoom largely unwatchable. Why TE3N was an overall pulsating, if slightly slow film - extremely well made but let down by a poorly executed climax. We also take aim at the CBFC, and celebrate sense prevailing in the case of #UdtaPahlaj Follow us on: FB: www.facebook.com/ticmediaproductions/ TW: twitter.com/productions_tic SC: soundcloud.com/tic-productions/ www.ticproductionsindia.com All clips used in the podcast belong to Eros Now and/or the original copyright owners, and are used here for non-commercial purposes only.
