Woah! What a week it was. Firstly, we are both traveling, and in between all the time zones, we managed to watch, review, and bring this to youFriday Night Plan on @netflix was sooooooo coool. I loved the simple movie with no specific agenda, and Babil Khan shines through and through. Freelancer on @hulu / Hotstar was intense - with only four episodes released so far- we are looking forward to continuing the story of how a girl called Aliya gets kidnapped to be trained by ISIS in Syria by her own husband's brainwashed family.Hansal Mehta strikes hard with another series that hits it out of the park. With intense storytelling and a lead actor who makes us believe he is real- Scam 2003- The Telgi Story is a series to watch despite the snafus on SonyLiv's Sling channel with episodes. So - here it is - enjoy our podcast this week.LoveTeam Desis.Desislive podcast delivers the latest movie and show reviews to your devices. Hansal Mehta joins us for a chat on two of his early films, Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar and Chhal. One's a black comedy about end of innocence. The other's a sharp action drama centered around betrayal. Both films had compelling story lines, terrific cast, great music and both attempted something new in their technique. Two films I wish more people would watch. Why? I make my case on the episode. In this episode, Dhruv and Aryan invite returning guest Ashwani Kumar Tiwari to discuss Anubhav Sinha's COVID-backdropped social issues drama "Bheed." Before that, however, Sanjeet joins them to talk about two other films directed by filmmakers frequently appearing in the "Special Thanks" section of every Sinha film -- Anurag Kashyap and Hansal Mehta. These three films -- "Almost Pyaar with DJ Mohabbat," "Faraaz," & "Bheed" -- together reflect a specific type of leftist didacticism that exists in opposition to the right-wing films raking in cash at the box office nowadays. We discuss the merits and limitations of this brand of cinema, the divergent specificities with which each filmmaker utilizes them in thier films, and if some approaches work better than others. Afwaah (starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Bhumi Pednekar and Sumeet Vyas), similar to Anubhav's recent Bheed or Hansal Mehta's Faraaz, is a part of Bollywood's dissenting cinema. While it is crucial to have such films, they often assume a morally superior stance, neglecting the importance of narrating a captivating story, which can itself drive change. As the renowned late American critic Roger Ebert once said, movies are the most influential aid to empathy among all arts, and excellent films can transform us into better individuals. To know more about the film, listen to the full review by Anupama Chopra.

Shahid is a 2013 biopic on the life of human rights lawyer Shahid Azmi who was assassinated in 2010. Directed by Hansal Mehta and co-produced by Anurag Kashyap and UTV Spotboy, the film is headlined by Rajkummar Rao who plays the eponymous lawyer who invested his life for the lesser-privileged and stood up for those who had been wronged. This underrated gem won two National Awards (Best Actor and Best Director) and is a compelling account of a man who served selflessly for those who had been failed by the legal system. The film borrows from real events and also depicts the fate of those who are routinely profiled on account of their faith and wrongly accused of being involved in acts of terror. That many of them happen to belong to modest homes and don't have the means to afford a counsel to defend themselves, makes them even more vulnerable to the system and this film elaborately depicts their predicament. Shahid is a heart-breaking and gut-wrenching watch but it's also an unfiltered account of those who are routinely rounded up and accused of crimes they've not committed. If you haven't watched Shahid yet, it's streaming on Amazon Prime Video, Itunes, SonyLIV and youtube.Alright, that's the lost and found film for today's podcast. I shall be back again with another film or show that turned out to be a hidden gem. Until next time, it's your host Nikhil outta here.
Hansal Mehta's Aligarh is based on the real-life story of the Aligarh University professor who was persecuted and laid-off for his sexual orientation and translates as a heart-breaking story of discrimination. When a local news channel manages to shoot this professor allegedly having sex with a rickshaw puller, he's singled out and ostracised and eventually, compelled to consider extreme measures.Headlined by Manoj Bajpayee, who plays the wronged academic and Rajkummar Rao, who plays a journalist hopeful of getting to the bottom of the affair, Aligarh is a telling portrait of homophobia and a society that is blatantly intolerant of sexual minorities. The film also draws a compelling account of loneliness and how those who must fend for themselves get by with little help or support. But what really shines through in this film is Bajpayee's ability to slip into his character with such immersion that you can weigh in on his thoughts and feelings in almost every single frame. Mehta's immersive narrative and style of storytelling allow us a ringside view of the proceedings without manipulating how we process or accept this story. Aligarh is surely one of Mehta's most compelling works, along with Citylight and Shahid. Some may feel that this film speaks for those who are routinely marginalised on account of their sexuality and makes a case for being more inclusive. But Aligarh also documents a man's struggle to survive and be accepted for who he is, at a point when his right to have a private life has been violated. If you haven't watched this gem do so now on OTT. It is streaming now on Eros Now, Zee5, Aitel tv, JioAlright, that's the end of this podcast OTTplay Lost and Found, I shall be back again with a brand new film critically acclaimed but lesser-known, until then it's your host Nikhil signing out.
This special episode is a conversation between Deval and Hansal Mehta that took place earlier this year at Dasra Philanthropy Week. Listen in as Hansal speaks to Deval about his perspectives on philanthropy, what he believes is real impact, and his lockdown beard. Hansal Mehta is a well-known National Award winning filmmaker, director, and writer. Some of his well-known films are Shahid, City Lights, and more recently, the web series Scam 1992. Hansal is a longtime friend of the development sector. His wife Safeena Husain is a social worker and the founder of the non-profit, Educate Girls in Mumbai. (14:27) "I think it's really important for us not to look at a metric of I'm giving 1% or 0.1% or 0.03%. It needs to be about what is the problem in front of me that we need to solve? And I think that's critical. And so for me, I guess it really starts with that. Which is, are we trying to really move people out of poverty and enable them to thrive? Or are we complacent when they survive? And I say this because many of the metrics that globally are looked at in terms of poverty are really mortality rates - is somebody living or dying? Literacy is defined by whether you could read or write your name, not whether or not you can read and write enough to gain an education, which leads to some sort of employment or that you can sign documents that you ensure are not cheating you, or that you can read even what's available to you with various government schemes and take action. And so I think the bar unfortunately is so low in terms of survival versus thriving societies." The interview and the Q and A that followed have been edited. Storytelling (on film) occurs in three stages: on paper (writing), on sets (direction) and in the editing room. Apurva Asrani has had the experience of wearing all three hats. Abhinandan and Rajyasree talk about Raazi, Mother's Day ads, and Rajyasree talks to Abhinandan about the celebrity wedding and engagement that flooded everyone's social media feed, and lots more. The podcast starts with Abhinandan interviewing Meghna Gulzar, where she talks about her new film as a Director and Writer, Raazi. On being asked about the kind of positive reviews the film is getting and does it matter to her, Meghna says: "They will never not matter because you're creating something to put out there for the people to opine on. That opinion will always be relevant and important. So yes, it is overwhelming because there's been complete approval across the board barring one or two here and there. The numbers, the way the film is performing at the theatre, are still really growing so there's a word of mouth. There's an acceptance from the people. Then you come across messages which people are sending and forwarding, which say we were watching it in this theatre, the audience stood up and clapped at the end. That is my biggest payoff."Then she goes on to talk about her first film Filhaal, problems during the shoot of Raazi, nepotism and more.Abhinandan and Rajyasree then discuss the film that stars Alia Bhatt. While Rajyasree says “I didn't think Alia acted well”, she also adds, “All the actors were very well cast… I just find it really nice that a mother and daughter played a mother and daughter on celluloid also”.Abhinandan, in agreement with Rajyasree, says, “All the reviews had built it up so much for me” and adds that “I really liked its politics… it kept me hooked throughout”. Rajyasree shares trivia about Hansal Mehta's films Shahid and Omerta before moving on to the trailer of The Spy Who Dumped Me. Rajyasree says “the plot revolves around the Supreme Court order against the age-old tradition of not allowing widows in Vrindavan to play Holi”, which was apparently not obvious in the trailer. She feels the trailer was more of an ad for “Exotic India” and the movie is “highly avoidable”. Abhinandan says the “film is going to be below average”.Rajyasree talks about the “weddings we virtually attended” - of Sonam Kapoor with Anand Ahuja and the engagement of Isha Ambani to the “Piramal boy”. Rajyasree talks about the “romantic” engagement in the temple and Abhinandan talks about how these weddings and engagements went viral on social media.“Every third thing on that day was ‘watch the viral video of Nita Ambani dancing',” he says. Abhinandan, however, calls it “too goody, goody nice acting”.Rajyasree confirms “they are very loving, these mothers I have to say… nobody has a natural reaction”. Abhinandan adds “there should be some reality to these ads”.The Google Assistant ad is the last on the agenda. Rajyasree talks about what is happening and “technology which makes you think you're talking to a human” and how this feature may be the “beginning of the end of humanity”. There seem to be some really good humour points”.Rajyasree doesn't seem too impressed by Veere Di Wedding starring Kareena Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, Swara Bhaskar and Shikha Talsania. Abhinandan says “it seems like a more fun version of Angry Indian Goddesses”. He talks about the “first-half comedy and second-half tragedy” approach used in Bollywood. The controversy was triggered by a documentary released by Hari Kondavola addressing the issue.Rajyasree says: “Priyanka Chopra is doing the rounds of the talk shows and so on” for her upcoming season of Quantico. She talks about the actress coming from a privileged background and feels “her trauma is something I have not been able to wrap my head around".Abhinandan dwells more on stereotypes reinforced in Bollywood and the extent of political correctness. And then comes the advice that everyone should take into consideration – “If you're so offended by Apu, then get a life”. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
