Nina Robinson (Soundtruism Media Productions) and Ninna Makrinov (The Fat Psychologist podcast) join Flixwatcher to review Nina's choice Scoop. Scoop (2024) is a dramatisation of the jaw dropping 2019 BBC Newsnight interview with Prince Andrew. It is based on the book Scoops by former Newsnight editor Sam McAlister. Directed by Philip (The Crown) Martin, it stars Gillian Anderson as Newsnight host Emily Maitlis, Keeley Hawes as Amanda Thirsk, Prince Andrew's private secretary, Billie Piper as Sam McAlister and Rufus Sewell as Prince Andrew. Following the publication of images of Prince Andrew walking with child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein the Prince's PR team suggest some friendly press opportunities will help rebuild his image. After negotiations Sam Manages to secure an interview with Prince Andrew at Buckingham Palace for Newsnight. While filming the interview it becomes apparent that Prince Andrew has no self awareness and the Newsnight crew realise they have secured the interview of the decade. Scoop is the most made for TV film of recent years. It attempts to build drama around the negotiation of the interview and give a small glimpse into the lives of the major players. Recommendability and small screen scores were pretty high but lower engagement scores give an overall rating of 3.29. My guest today is Louise Doughty, the woman behind some of the knottiest thrillers to grace our bookshelves and TV screens in recent years. Her bestseller, Apple Tree Yard about a sensible middle aged woman who makes a very unsensible decision (involving sex in the house of commons!) sold over half a million copies and was turned into a smash hit BBC series starring Emily Watson. She was also the brains behind the breathtaking BBC drama Crossfire that starred Keeley Hawes. Of course What you don't hear, is that Apple Tree Yard was Louise's 7th novel, catapulting her to “the big time” at the age of 50. Her latest book, A Bird In Winter, looks set to continue that trajectory. Think The 39 steps if the lead was an extremely resourceful 50something woman on the run. Louise joined me to talk about how her “overnight” success at 50” transformed her life (mainly she finally started a pension!) And why it's still considered controversial when middle aged women have sex! We also discussed surviving the menopause-puberty collision, the unrealised fury - and potential - of the middle aged woman and the power and importance of realising you're not for everyone. And that's fine. Note: apologies for the occasionally disrupted sound quality at the start of this episode. * You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including A Bird in Winter by Louise Doughty and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me. * If you enjoyed this episode and you fancy buying me a coffee, pop over to my page on buymeacoffee.com. • And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com • The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Juliette Nicholls @ Pineapple Audio Production. Desperate for a new series to binge-watch or heading to the cinema for date night? Gayle Edmunds shares her top picks of things to watch on the big and small screen. This week we're watching: SCOOP (Netflix) Cast: Gillian Anderson, Keeley Hawes, Billie Piper, Rufus SewellPlot: An insider account of how the women of "Newsnight" secured Prince Andrew's infamous 2019 interview about his friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey EpsteinSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This week, Jacki and Lyle are back with a follow-up to their preview of the Netflix film, Scoop, starring Gillian Anderson, Billie Piper and Rufus Sewell. Based on the book of the same name by Sam McAlister, played by Piper, this Netflix drama did not disappoint as it recreated the story of one of the most notorious television interviews in history - Emily Maitlis and her interview with Prince Andrew regarding his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein and allegations of sexual abuse towards young women being trafficked by Epstein. Jacki and Lyle both praise the fantastic performances of the central cast, with Anderson as Maitlis, Piper as McAlister, Sewell as Prince Andrew and Keeley Hawes as Andrew's private secretary Amanda Thirsk all drawing particular acclaim. Jacki asks for Lyle's opinion on how Maitlis' character was depicted in the film, before assessing how Andrew represents what many in the PR industry would describe as a 'problematic client', with reference to his insistence on going about things his own way rather than listen to experts around him. Lyle draws comparisons between how it would appear McAlister obtained this interview and how Martin Bashir secured his interview with Diana, with the former seemingly working with Andrew's team to help them towards what they felt was the best course of action, and the latter having recently been found to have used manipulative tactics to coerce the then Princess of Wales into being interviewed. Jacki ultimately questions, with reference to the Netflix drama, why the Palace elected to press ahead with the Newsnight interview with little to none of their own conditions put in place, with Lyle asking whether this can be considered a turning point in securing the future of the programme itself.Artwork by DimosoMusic by Lyle FultonGet in touch via lyle@dimoso.com or info@dimoso.comMore information at www.dimoso.com and www.therestispr.comFollow us on Twitter - @TheRestIsPR Hosted on Acast. On this episode of Nerd's Talking The Podcast, we delve into the intriguing world of journalism and scandal with our review of the new Netflix film, "Scoop." Directed by Philip Martin, this British biographical drama takes us behind the scenes of one of the most controversial interviews in recent memory. "Scoop" stars an impressive cast including Gillian Anderson, Keeley Hawes, Billie Piper, and Rufus Sewell. The film tells the gripping story of how the women of "Newsnight" secured Prince Andrew's infamous 2019 interview about his friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The screenplay by Peter Moffat and Geoff Bussetil is adapted from the 2022 book "Scoops: Behind the Scenes of the BBC's Most Shocking Interviews" by former Newsnight editor Sam McAlister. The interview, described as the "scoop of the decade," became the public catalyst for the downfall of Prince Andrew. It focused on Andrew's relationship with Epstein and allegations of sexual assault of a minor. The film provides a dramatic retelling of the negotiation process between the women of "Newsnight" and Buckingham Palace, highlighting the challenges they faced in securing the interview. Described as more than just a car crash but "a plane crashing into an oil tanker, causing a tsunami, triggering a nuclear explosion," the interview had far-reaching implications for the royal family and the British monarchy. Join us as we discuss the performances, the storytelling, and the impact of "Scoop" in this episode of Nerd's Talking The Podcast. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/nerdstalking/support

Caroline Goode served for 33 years in the Metropolitan Police in London. She retired as a Detective Superintendent in the Counter-Terrorism Command after spending ten years leading more than 100 complex murder investigations. One of those investigations, the so-called honour killing of a young Iraqi Kurdish woman by her family, was to become a life changer for Caroline. This investigation, which began as a simple missing person's report, was particularly challenging and complex. After the Banaz case, she trained thousands of police officers nationally and internationally in Honour Based Violence Awareness and was awarded the Queens Policing Medal for her work in 2012. Caroline joins me today to detail the damage that honour-based violence still does to women in the UK and explains her role in the shocking murder of 20-year-old Banaz Mahmod, which was subsequently dramatised in the TV series Honour starring Keeley Hawes. She shares her experience of joining the Metropolitan Police as an 18-year-old woman and some of the challenges she faced at the start of her career. Caroline also discusses why she looked to progress her career in the Metropolitan Police in complex investigative work and why she has always preferred to work in teams that support victims. "We need to keep raising awareness of honour-based violence about it in whichever format we can - there needs to be a wholly consistent approach, or we're going to end up in a situation where these murders continue to happen ." - Caroline Goode Today on The Community Safety Podcast: How Caroline's interest in becoming a detective began with a traumatic experience Why she fought to get maternity regulations changed in the Metropolitan Police Caroline's first role as a Senior Investigating Officer and the investigation that changed her life The story of Caroline's involvement in the horrific Banaz Mahmod case and the eureka moment that eventually helped her team to bring her murderers to justice The difficulty of extraditing two of Banaz's killers from Iraqui Kurdistan and how Caroline made legal history during the process

Actor & executive producer Matthew Macfadyen, actors Kevin R. McNally & Emer Heatley, director & executive producer Jon S. Baird and writer & executive producer John Preston The life and times of disgraced Labour minister John Stonehouse are dramatised in this series starring Matthew Macfadyen and co-starring Keeley Hawes. The series relates how Stonehouse, a high-flying member of Harold Wilson's government, vanished from the beach of a large luxury hotel in Florida in November 1974, leaving a neatly folded pile of clothes as he swam into the sea with the intent of faking his own death. However, it became apparent that his reputation masked some very dark secrets.

Writer/director Dean Craig's film career took off in 2007 when he wrote the hit UK comedy, Death at a Funeral, starring Matthew Macfadyen, Keeley Hawes and Peter Dinklage, and directed by Frank Oz. The film won several audience awards for Best Film, and was remade in the US starring Chris Rock, Zoe Saldana, Martin Lawrence, and Tracy Morgan. In 2020, Craig turned his attention to directing as well as writing, with his debut film Love, Wedding, Repeat. Craig went on to write and directed The Honeymoon, with Maria Bakalova and Asim Chaudhry, and The Estate, starring Toni Collette, Anna Faris, Kathleen Turner and David Duchovny.Craig's other writing producing credits include the feature films Caffeine, A Few Best Men as well as creating the comedy series, Off the Hook with Jonathan Bailey, and Hit the Road, starring Jason Alexander. "So, you have my rhythm on the page, and then David Duchovny brings his rhythm and his attributes. And then you get this sort of hopefully wonderful collaboration between writer and director and actor. The Estate is the film that I directed most recently, and that's with Toni Colette, Anna Faris, David Duchovny, Kathleen Turner, Rosemarie DeWitt, Ron Livingston, Keyla Monterroso Mejia. Some really wonderful actors and I think a very fun ensemble that we were able to do there. I had a very strange year where I got to do The Honeymoon and The Estate pretty much back to back with no break in between, which was challenging, but also amazing to be one minute in Venice with these fantastic actors. Really, I can't tell you how much I loved working with Maria and Pico and Asim and Lucas. They were all totally different people and personalities, but all fantastic in their own way. And then I jumped onto the set and had those fantastic actors to work with. So it's been quite a year, I have to say."www.imdb.com/name/nm1918877/?ref_=tt_ov_dr www.creativeprocess.infowww.oneplanetpodcast.orgInstagram @creativeprocesspodcast

"What I tend to do is I write for the character and then the actor will come onboard. I've had some incredible talent that I've been very lucky to have been sort of collaborating with, and they'll often bring their own rhythm and their own style, and sometimes their own words to the role. So it's a collaboration, especially when you've got talent, as you mentioned, Rebel Wilson. She's so specific in the way that she does her comedy and the way she plays her role. So she brought a lot of herself to the part that we did in A Few Best Men. And David Duchovny in The Estate also did that. He came with a lot of ideas, a lot of suggestions, a lot of funny things that he wanted to do and try out.So, you have my rhythm on the page, and then David Duchovny brings his rhythm and his attributes. Caroline Goode QPM Caroline Goode served for 33 years in the Metropolitan Police in London. "We need to keep raising awareness of honour-based violence about it in whichever format we can - there needs to be a wholly consistent approach, or we're going to end up in a situation where these murders continue to happen ." - Caroline Goode Today on The Community Safety Podcast: How Caroline's interest in becoming a detective began with a traumatic experience Why she fought to get maternity regulations changed in the Metropolitan Police Caroline's first role as a Senior Investigating Officer and the investigation that changed her life The story of Caroline's involvement in the horrific Banaz Mahmod case and the eureka moment that eventually helped her team to bring her murderers to justice The difficulty of extraditing two of Banaz's killers from Iraqui Kurdistan and how Caroline made legal history during the process Connect with Caroline Goode: Honour: Achieving Justice for Banaz Mahmod by Caroline Goode Caroline Goode Website Caroline Goode on Twitter Connect with The Community Safety Podcast: The Community Safety Podcast Website The Community Safety Podcast on Facebook The Community Safety Podcast on Twitter

It was a sheer delight to welcome actor and musician, Max Beesley onto The Paul Weller Fan Podcast. What a talent! - piano, vibes, drums and percussion - song-writing - production - and a successful TV & movie acting career to boot!. The Paul Weller Movement kicks off... Even though he was just 18 at the time, Max played a key part in those early days of Paul's solo career with The Paul Weller Movement. He performed live as part of the band across the UK and Europe in 1990/91. Surely I'm not the only one who managed to wear out a VHS copy of the Brixton Academy show because I played it so often?!. I've posted a link to that gig below as it's so very special to me - amazing songs and performances all round. Funky as hell too!. It was recorded on 20th April 1991, a whole year before Paul's first solo album was released in Japan (18 months in the UK). The gig features Steve White on drums, Jacko Peake on saxophone and flute, Henry Thomas on bass and Max Beesley on keys and vibes. Into Tomorrow, Kosmos & playing on the Wild Wood LP Cast your mind back to 6th May 1991. The first solo single… Into Tomorrow was released - and Paul was back!. Recorded at Solid Bond in February, this absolute banger has Weller on vocals, bass, guitars and percussion. Steve White is on drums, Dr. Robert (The Blow Monkeys) on guitar (and BV) with Max on the organ. He also mentions on the podcast about recording Kosmos during that session too. Next time you are digging in to your Weller albums - check out Wild Wood to hear Max performing extra vocals with Marco Nelson on Has My Fire Really Gone Out? and playing wurlitzer on Moon on Your Pyjamas (a song that Paul wrote for his eldest son, Nat). New Music - Song for Sabrina + Omar + Weller Solo? As you'll hear during our chat, Max has been working with Paul again in recent years. We hear about a very special collaboration called Song for Sabrina on his own soon-to-be-released solo album - The Groove Spectrum, working with his old Guildhall mate (and previous podcast guest) Omar in Paul's studio for his new LP and even recording some late night grooves with Paul at Black Barn that will hopefully turn up in the future. What a Roll Call... As a session musician, Max played, toured or recorded with the likes of Incognito, Jamiroquai, Robbie Williams, Omar, Brand New Heavies, George Benson, Stevie Wonder, The JB's and Zero7. As an actor, he has starred in many hugely successful TV series - The History of Tom Jones, Bodies, Hotel Babylon, Mad Dogs, Jamestown and The Outsider. In 2022, you'll be able to see Max starring alongside Keeley Hawes in Sky TV sci-fi thriller The Midwich Cuckoos and in Guy Ritchie's new movie Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre with Hugh Grant, Jason Statham, Aubrey Plaza and Josh Hartnett. Spoiler alert, you can also see Max on screen during the Paul Weller video On Sunset - with a little cameo appearance at the end on the promo film.
