Basudhara and I finished our conversation at 10 pm. One hour forty-three minutes. And my heart was full. We'd started off thinking we should aim for a thirty to forty five minutes talk. I'm just glad it wasn't to be.There is something reassuring about Basudhara. Because she speaks with conviction, of being completely honest to the moment. Thoughts, images, opinions, all, take shape like a building which is linear, with stark lines, but a place you know is warm and welcoming. Her latest book 'A Blur of a Woman' is the one I will be gifting the most this year, and possibly beyond. The poems are tender and hard, heartbreaking and life-affirming, as she bleeds her heart to open our souls. In this fabulous conversation, which I wished hadn't ended, she talks, amongst a million other things, of her provincial life, of how poetry improves on marination, how a poem can be obstinate to change, how illnesses define trajectories, and how Keki Daruwalla showed her why greatness is nothing but grace in ordinary things. Basudhara says writing is "a struggle to keep affirming life's movement, its open-endedness, its journey of becoming as well as its right and necessity to become". Basudhara teaches English at Karim City College in Jamshedpur. Creatively and academically drawn to themes of gender, mythology and ecology, her five published books include a monograph and three collections of poems - Moon in My Teacup, Stitching a Home and Inhabiting. Her work has featured widely in anthologies and magazines, including Chandrabhaga, The Punch MAgazine, Yearbook of Indian Poetry in English, Helter Skelter Anthology of New Writing, The Dhaka Tribune, EPW, and Madras Courier, among others. Co-editor of two poetry anthologies and a firm believer in the therapeutic power of verse, she writes, reviews, and sporadically curates adn translates poetry from Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, India.Catch her muse, reflect, recite in this first episode of the second season of 'Uncut Poetry presents Red River Sessions'.In Red River Sessions, we talk to published poets about their poetry, their craft, and what haunts them. It is brought to you by Red River, which is the premier independent publisher of poetry and curated prose, and Uncut Poetry, which is a much-loved weekly podcast of original poetry. fWotD Episode 2804: Gerald Durrell Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Tuesday, 7 January 2025 is Gerald Durrell.Gerald Malcolm Durrell (7 January 1925 – 30 January 1995) was a British naturalist, writer, zookeeper, conservationist, and television presenter. He was born in Jamshedpur in British India, and moved to England when his father died in 1928. In 1935 the family moved to Corfu, and stayed there for four years, before the outbreak of World War II forced them to return to the UK. In 1946 he received an inheritance from his father's will that he used to fund animal-collecting trips to the British Cameroons and British Guiana. He married Jacquie Rasen in 1951; they had very little money, and she persuaded him to write an account of his first trip to the Cameroons. The result, titled The Overloaded Ark, sold well, and he began writing accounts of his other trips. An expedition to Argentina and Paraguay followed in 1953, and three years later he published My Family and Other Animals, an account of his years in Corfu. It became a bestseller. In the late 1950s he decided to found his own zoo. He visited the Cameroons for the third time, and on his return attempted to persuade Bournemouth and Poole town councils to start local zoos. These plans came to nothing but he finally found a suitable site on the island of Jersey, and leased the property in late 1959. He envisaged the Jersey Zoo as an institution for the study of animals and for captive breeding, rather than a showcase for the public. In 1963 control of the zoo was turned over to the Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust. The zoo repeatedly came close to bankruptcy over the next few years, and Durrell raised money for it by his writing and by fundraising appeals. The site for the zoo was leased, and to guarantee the zoo's future, Durrell launched a successful appeal in 1970 for funds to purchase the property. He wrote about his further expeditions, and the zoo, and his own experiences in Corfu and after the war.Durrell was an alcoholic and had repeated problems caused by his drinking. In 1976 he separated from his wife; they were divorced in 1979, and Durrell remarried, to Lee McGeorge, an American zoologist. He and Lee made several television documentaries in the 1980s, including Durrell in Russia and Ark on the Move. They co-authored The Amateur Naturalist, which was intended for amateurs who wanted to know more about the natural history of the world around them, though it also had sections about each of the world's major ecosystems. This book became his most successful, selling well over a million copies; a television series was made from it.Durrell became an OBE in 1982. In 1984 he founded the Durrell Conservation Academy, to train conservationists in captive breeding. The institution has been very influential: its thousands of graduates included a director of London Zoo, an organisation which was once opposed to Durrell's work. He was diagnosed with liver cancer and cirrhosis in 1994, and received a liver transplant, but died the following January. He was cremated, and his ashes were buried at Jersey Zoo.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:12 UTC on Tuesday, 7 January 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Gerald Durrell on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Olivia.

The "philosophy", invented by French writer Alfred Jarry, is marking its 150th anniversary this year.“Pataphysics has a taste for beauty and for the impossible made possible,” according to Philippe Starck. “This science is in the image of life, allowing serious things to be taken lightly, and light things seriously.”In addition to the quiz question, there was the bonus question, suggested by Muhammad Saleem Akhtar, president of the RFI Seven Stars Radio Listeners Club in District Chiniot, Pakistan. His question was: “What is the one piece of advice you would like to give to your fellow humans?”The winners are: RFI Listeners Club member Tasneem Saleh from Nilphamari, Bangladesh. The Entrance by Gerald Durrell Gerald Durrell was born in Jamshedpur which was then part of British India, in 1925 and died in St Hellier, Jersey in 1995, aged 70. This story, The Entrance was published in his collection The Picnic and Suchlike Pandemonium in 1979. This title was renamed The Picnic and Other Inimitable Stories though I suspect that someone who didn't understand the word pandemonium would struggle with inimitable too. But that's marketing for you. His family's life has been the subject of a popular TV series “My Family & Other Animals” taken from the title of one of his books. He was a prolific writer, usually of light, comic fiction and autobiography and a life-long animal lover who set up the Jersey Zoo. Those of you who read these notes will probably predict offended comments about animals being hurt in The Entrance and how zoos are bad. My only comments are: it's fiction. There were no animals, and; attitudes change over times. I don't think he set up a zoo because he was a wicked man who wanted to hurt animals. Zoos were uncontroversial once. Those who don't make comments on videos expressing their hurt and offence probably won't read the notes. Durrell's famous siblings is the author and poet Lawrence Durrell. In his early years, as his family were middle class and British, he had an Indian nurse called an ayah. He ascribes his lifelong love of animals to a visit to a zoo when he was small in India. The family moved to the Crystal Palace area of London (with its concrete dinosaurs) and he avoided going to school by pretending to be ill. In 1939 the family moved to Corfu, Grreece and Durrell began to build his menagerie. This period of his life was an inspiration of his many books. Because of the Second World War, the family moved back to England and he ended up working in an aquarium and a pet store. He was not medically fit to be a soldier but ended up working on a farm. After the war he went to work at Whipsnade Zoo. After that, he got a job collecting animals for zoos by visiting Africa and South America. He was known for treating his animals well, which caused him financial difficulties . He founded his own zoo in Jersey in 1959. The EntranceThe Entrance was recommended to me by Alison Waddell. It is a frame story and thus hearkens back to the classic ghost story tales which are often told as frames and often feature old, occult manuscripts. Gerald Durrell goes to meet his charming, slightly comic friends in Provence. They hand him a manuscript they found in Marseilles that belonged to a strange man called Dr Le Pitre. Dr Le Pitre is another layer to the story that seems quite unnecessary to me, but I might be missing something. The manuscript dated as March 16th 1901 features a lengthy set up of a Victorian (the old queen died on 22 January 1901, but her influence lingered a few months at least) antiquarian book dealer (very M R James) who is stalked by a strange foreigner on a foggy night in London (so far so trope, and I suspect that Durrell was doing this to play with the genre). He gets a mysterious warning from his friend about the family, but becomes great mates with this aristocratic frenchman. Ultimately we see that this was a grift and Durrell drops a few ominous sentences along the lines of “If I knew then what I know now”. “That was my gravest mistake” which sort of spoilt the surprise of the twist at the end. But it's full Gothic. Alone in an ancient chateau in terrible weather, cut off by snow with a lurking monster in the mirrors. Instead of strange old servitors he has some friendly animals. Again he can't help himself intruding the comic parrot and friendly cat and dog. The canaries don't get a speaking part. I wondered how such a monster kept such happy pets? In fact we have pea soup fog in London, thunder and lightning in Provence and heavy snow in Gorge du Tarn. Classic stuff. I am guessing that young Gideon resisted...

Coming-of-age Indian movies about childhood have mostly focused on issues that adults believe children deal with. But there have also been sensitive films such as Rockford and Taare Zameen Par that closely followed adolescent life, with all its challenges and joys. And today's Lost and Found, which is Sanjivan Lal's Bubble Gum, is surely a lesser-known gem that makes for a telling portrait of childhood. Set in '80s Jamshedpur, the film introduces us to an average group of pre-teens running through the emotions synonymous with their age group. Negotiating jealousy, competitiveness and even fondness for a significant other which is based on nothing, in particular, are just some of the themes this film ventures into. It also carves some very reasonable and liberal onscreen parents played with considerable heft by Sachin Khedekar and Tanvi Azmi. In fact, one of the better lines in the film also happens to be on parenting. It goes, “Humein pata hona chahiye, ki patang mein kab dheel chodni hain aur kab kaatni.” This loosely translates as “[As parents], we must know when to crack down on our children and when to cut them loose.”Bubble Gum also delves into the many innocent fears, pleasant realisations and silly delights that tickled us as children. It also presents how these fears sometimes trigger minors to consider desperate measures as it seems like the only way out. Aside from delivering as a comforting slice of life watch and a mood-lifter, Bubble Gum also offers some unique parenting pointers to chew on. If you haven't watched this flick yet then do so on Eros Now , Google Play and Youtube. That's the OTTplay Lost and Found for today's podcast. I shall be back again with another critically acclaimed film but lesser-known. This Is your host Nikhil signing out for now.

“Being the first woman in every single job I have done means, I get to see just what it means to be in a job that feels built for someone else. I always say, ‘We're all in the same storm, we're not in the same boat'” This is what Unilever's chief human resources officer or CHRO Leena Nair said in an interview to Harper's Bazaar last month. It was before she was announced the head of Chanel. This response of hers fits perfectly in her situation today. The 52-year-old was on Tuesday appointed the new global CEO of French fashion house Chanel. She will be based in London for her new role. As an India-born woman of colour, Nair's appointment at the helm of Chanel is certainly an outlier. Chanel has for long been a tightly-controlled family fashion house. More importantly, unlike other India-born CEOs of global companies --- most recently Parag Agrawal who took charge of Twitter earlier this month --- Nair's educational and professional credentials are for the most part, ‘Made in India'. She completed her schooling in Maharashtra's Kolhapur before earning a degree in electronics engineering from Walchand College of Engineering in Maharashtra's Sangli. Nair went on to complete her MBA from the Xavier School of Management in Jamshedpur where she was a gold medallist. She joined Hindustan Unilever in 1992 as a management trainee. Nair was among the few women employees to opt for a factory role. It took her to different factories of HUL in Kolkata, Tamil Nadu's Ambattur and Maharashtra's Taloja. In her 30 years at HUL, she rose through the ranks and held posts such as the employee relations manager, HR manager and executive director HR. After three years as head of leadership and organisational development in London, she was appointed as chief human resources officer or CHRO in 2016, with responsibility for the company's 1,50,000 people across more than 100 countries globally. Nair was also made a member of the Unilever Leadership Executive. She became the first woman, first Asian and youngest ever CHRO at Unilever and member of the Unilever Leadership Executive. At HUL, over a period of 10 years starting 2010, she helped the company achieve a 50/50 gender balance across global leadership. Her agenda at HUL also included a commitment to pay the living wage across its whole suppl

Veal describes the association's new perspective and new definition of what makes specialty tea special. and then to northern India where Aravinda Anantharaman visits a tea café with heart.Differentiating Specialty TeaA rigid definition of what makes tea special has eluded the industry. After 45 years of competitions there is consensus on the qualities that make an outstanding oolong as judged by the Lugu Tea Farmers' in Taiwan. In France, the AVPA has demonstrated skill in determining the gastronomic qualities in tea that please the local palate. The International Specialty Tea Association posts a set of universal standards such as pluck and leaf quality. Consumers mainly differentiate by price. This week the European Speciality Tea Association announced a definition that is more aspirational that dogmatic. ESTA Executive Director David Veal joins us to explain how the association adopted this approach and why it will prove helpful. For the Love of TeaLa Gravitea Cafe is a remarkable tea café with hundreds of selections of fine teas inspired by the travels of founder Avinash Dugar but aside from specialty teas, what make LaGravitea special is that the young staff are hard-working graduates of the local school for the hearing-impaired.

In this episode, Vikram Sharma, Director of Human Resources at Marriott International talks to Springworks' Head of Marketing, Abhash Kumar. They discuss major challenges that the hospitality industry, one of the worst hit by the pandemic, had to tackle and how the industry revamped its strategies to bounce back.Vikram is a self-motivated and vibrant leader who started his expedition in hospitality career after graduating from The Institute of Hotel Management Catering Technology and Applied Nutrition and lucratively completing a prestigious degree of Masters in Leadership from XLRI, Jamshedpur. He started his career with Hyatt Hotels & Resorts and later got associated with Marriott International.Hospitality industry is driven more by emotions.Vikram shares that the simplest way to distinguish the hospitality industry from the tech industry is that tech is driven by data and hospitality by emotions. People in this industry need to work with a lot of guidelines. There are processes in place, but ultimately, the goal is to satisfy guests. and organizations in this industry consider their employees to be equivalent to their guests, and they call them the internal guests. Seeing his friends working in different industries( FMCG, technology, banking and more), he realizes that every industry has its own norms. However, he explains how the hospitality industry demands a lot of collaboration between the teams. He does not negate the fact that it's not relevant in other industries. But, in hospitality, it is certainly a notch up.Patience is one skill that is required at the workplace post-pandemicVikram shares that through an HR leader's perspective, he has learned the significance of being patient over the years. With tech grabbing its place in almost all the industries, workspaces have started moving faster. Patience is one competency that will be required to deal with the younger generation. He also added that the industries are constantly changing. There is a remarkable change in the way things were operating a decade back and the way we operate now. While the basics have still managed to remain intact, the way we do things have certainly changed. Hence, industries should be open to that change, and probably, that is the reason they are now open to do things digitally.Virtual training is the new way Vikram mentions that the whole idea is that all training, which was done in person, has been shifted to virtual platforms. This has increased participation as it requires no travel and is extremely convenient for people. for the person. So the core training programmes have moved on to a virtual platform. That's a very significant change that he observed in the training field. To cover his second point, he highlighted a comparison between the virtual training calls that took place in April 2020 with the ones that take place now.. Previously they had to repeatedly request people to switch on the cameras and interact. Nowadays, people are much more comfortable switching their cameras on and being a part of it. Virtual platforms for hospitality have changed from a process perspective. However, their workflow still cannot work from home because guests still need to be checked in to the hotel, food is still required to be cooked and served to them, etc.Produced by: Priya BhattPodcast host: Abhash Kumar

Today's episode is the third in our series on women's participation in the workforce in India. Every year, class XII grades show girls outperforming boys in science subjects. A McKinsey study, shows that in India women make up 43% of those graduating but only 25% of those in entry level jobs. That is a huge drop. There are many explanations including marriage, childbirth, care for elders, being the trailing spouse, safety, and all of this compounds as you go higher in the career ladder. The burden of childcare and elder care almost entirely falls on women. The effect shows on the labor participation rate. At an effective 11% participation in manufacturing and services, we trail many mature and emerging countries. For some time now, I've brought you individual stories of guests with outsized abilities and wisdom. So, in a break from tradition, today, I bring you a panel discussion with 3 leaders, who have the unique distinction of being able to shape the participation of women at work in India and with a different perspective and background. Joining me are Hema Hattangady, former CEO of Conzerv, an Indian family-owned enterprise acquired by Schneider Electric, who sits on the board of multiple companies and an alumnus of IIM Calcutta, Dr. Murali Padmanabhan, Senior VP for Global Talent & OD at Virtusa, leadership coach and a PhD in Applied Mathematics from the University of Hyderabad and Shonalie Gupta, Senior Director Organization Development at Indegene, diversity and inclusion coach and an alumnus of XLRI, Jamshedpur. In this episode, we discuss awareness of India's dismal female participation, societal stereotypes, and challenges. But that is not all. We go further and give you practical, tested, tips and ideas on how to have the conversation around increasing female labor participation, beginning with small changes at an individual level to large scale organization impact. To cap it off, each of the panelists include their wish list of how they see corporate India 20 years from now. Go on, grab a cuppa joe, a note pad and tune in. In a bid to revive the economy in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic, several state governments issued ordinances with respect to labour reforms that have further skewed the dynamics of labour-capital relations in India. NUGGET CONTEXT Mouli talks about the context behind writing the book which is a combination of him finding time across multiple flights to Singapore to pen down his thoughts given a Regional role and a desire to take a break and take stock of life. He also discusses how he wanted to contribute to social impact in a way that leverages his skills rather than do on-ground field work where he may not have any distinctive value to add. GUEST Chandramouli Venkatesan (Mouli) has a strong corporate track record of over 25 years. He is an alumnus of XLRI, Jamshedpur and spent his initial years in Sales and Marketing in Asian Paints, GE Capital and Onida. He worked with Cadbury’s from 2005 till 2016. Over that time Cadbury metamorphosed to Kraft Foods and Mondelez and his last role there was Managing Director for India. In his decade-plus time there, he has worked across areas including Strategy, Marketing, HR and General Management across India and Asia Pacific. He now works with Pidilite Industries as CEO, Special Projects with the mission to create and set up a new business for them. Mouli recently authored the book - Catalyst which was published by Penguin RandomHouse. It is a synthesis of his reflections around how leaders should think about the two questions - Where to go & How to grow - as they go through their respective journeys. In this podcast conversation, Mouli talks about the notion of TMRR for leaders to turbocharge their personal growth, the concept of learning cycles when it comes to thinking about experiences, sowing the seeds for the second half in the first half, decoupling a quit decision and a join decision, impact of life on work and the role of values in personal growth and leadership. NUGGET CONTEXT Mouli talks the fact that the time people put in a job is not an appropriate indication of the experience they have gained. He outlines TMRR (Target, Measure, Review and Reflect) as a process through which people could derive a lot more experience than what the average person might get in that time period. He also talks about how people can build in the habit so that they practice it on a regular basis.
