The short version is that Ruben Amorim's Manchester United beat Lyon to progress to the Europa League semi-finals, where they will face Athletic Club. The long version... wow! Cruising at 2-0 after an hour, the team suffered not one but two implosions; the first to take the game to extra time, then another to find themselves four-two down against ten men. Strikerless, subs used, needing a miracle; Amorim got three. Casemiro won a penalty, converted by his captain (the 5,000th Utd goal at Old Trafford), and the Brazilian then laid on goals for makeshift strikers Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire, leaving the stadium, and fans watching on TV around the world, in equal measures of disbelief and rapture. Welcome in for another edition of the Morning Espresso from the SDH Network, brought to you by Oglethorpe University, Atlanta's premier undergraduate learning experience and soccer powerhouse. One of the wildest comebacks in the history of Manchester United might not just save their season, but might just save their status as an elite-level club as the Red Devils were trailing 4-2 to Lyon in extra time with less than 10 minutes to play and they came all the way back to win 5-4 on the night and 7-6 on aggregate. Non-forwards who were pressed into attacking roles Kobbie Mainoo & Harry Maguire scored the goals that leveled it and won it. Of course the Champions League final comeback win is going to be bigger, but there isn't a more shocking comeback and from a deeper position in a meaningful match that I can remember. Spurs continue on in the Europa League as well and Ange Postecoglou is enjoying sticking it to his critics after they knocked out Eintracht Frankfurt. Could it be an all-England Europa League final? Sputs have to get past Norwegian champs Bodo/Glimt while Manchester United will face Athletic Club de Bilbao. All MLS matches this weekend are tomorrow and the highlight is Columbus hosting Miami in Cleveland. Both teams are unbeaten, but Miami does have to think about Thursday's trip to Vancouver for the first leg of the Concacaf Champions Cup semifinals. Some other tasty matchups this weekend, be on the lookout for this week's MLS Six Pack later today on the SDH Network.UEFA Women's Champions League semifinals start this weekend with former Arsenal manager Joe Montemurro leading his Lyon side against the Gunners while Chelsea and Barcelona meet for the third straight year at this stage. Barcelona have won the last two, but Sonia Bompastor will continue the Quadruple-chase for the Blues. African Champions League semifinals also start this weekend as two Egyptian clubs, Al Ahly who have won 4 of the last 5 titles and Pyramids, face two South Africa clubs in Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates, respectively. First legs in South Africa this weekend, second legs next Friday in Cairo. According to Spanish reports, Jurgen Klopp has agreed to speak with Real Madrid about their coaching job that is expected to be open after the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona next weekend. Carlo Ancelotti is still in the sights of Brazil, who want him in place before the June World Cup qualifiers. More to come on this, but Georgia Impact sent the SDH Network a statement about their inclusion in WPSL Pro, the new women's second division professional league launching next year. "For too long female soccer players thought the end of the road was after 4 years in college. Now we can offer them the opportunity to live their dream by making it as a professional soccer player," said Robert Roddie, the Georgia Impact head coach. Their season at the amateur level of the WPSL starts very soon in Canton, coverage coming shortly all over the SDH Network as they start their preparations for becoming a professional club in 2026. Any sense of optimism that had been building around Ruben Amorim's team was squashed by a workmanlike Crystal Palace who, remarkably, haven't conceded a goal against Manchester United in two years. Were the wounds self-inflicted? Amorim chose to move Kobbie Mainoo, excellent in Europe as a ten, to play false nine and left out both his misfiring strikers. Overthinking, or perhaps a message to the transfer department? Danish international Patrick Dorgu has signed from Serie A's Lecce and uncertainty about Marcus Rashford's future may be coming to a head as he travels to Bodymoor Heath for a medical at Aston Villa. Complicated deal it may be, but will it free up funds for the club to bring in an attacker before Monday night's transfer deadline. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ruben Amorim deployed Kobbie Mainoo in one of the number ten positions against FCSB as Manchester United won comfortably to ease themselves through to the last 16 of this year's UEFA Europa League. A "rotated" starting XI looked like a bit of a gamble from the Portuguese manager, but a cautious approach initially followed by the introduction of more creative players at the break really paid off. The draw for the last 16 will take place later in February with four potential opponents; Galatasaray, AZ Alkmaar, Real Sociedad, or FC Midtjylland. There's at least one transfer in the offing, but even that might be held up. Meanwhile, Crystal Palace are next up in the Premier League, and United's recent record against them does not make for pretty reading. Do they qualify as a bogey team? We were sceptical clubs would come in for Marcus Rashford, but just a few days after he stated his openness to a move there are already some significant suitors. Could this actually happen? Much less likely is a transfer for either Kobbie Mainoo or Alejandro Garnacho: the two FA Youth Cup winners may not be certain starters for Amorim, but fans need not fear a fire sale... the price would have to be right. ...and with not one, but two FA Cup defences starting this weekend we catch up with the women's team, consider the merits of Arteta's Arsenal, and remember the season of no FA Cup football thanks to the inaugural FIFA club world cup. In the final episode of the series, Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes look at some of the key players in the later years of the Fergie era. They remember the first time they came up against Cristiano Ronaldo and why he used to frustrate his team-mates, how Scholesey helped persuade Wayne Rooney to sign and why it all kicked off between Patrice Evra and some of the ground staff at Chelsea. As well as players who became legends, they look at one or two who didn't live up to expectations, why it never worked out for them and how harshly players could be judged from day one at United. They also discuss the current squad and ask who are the leaders and whether there's too much pressure on the likes of Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo. Two and a half months since euphoria at Wembley, we head back under the arch. The same opponents again. A Manchester derby. Not quite a heavyweight rematch. The Community Shield rather than the FA Cup. But a game with meaning, a chance to lay down a marker, to use that old football cliché: to notch a statement victory. In this episode of the Manchester United Weekly Podcast, hosts Harry Robinson and Jack Tait preview Saturday's derby and make their predictions for the season as a whole. There's also unrivalled insight into the new crop of Academy players entering U18s football this year and our Patrons get a bonus Q&A with plenty more topics to debate. Become a Patron here, for as little as £3 per month. Plus, we have the first part of an exclusive chat with Paul Scholes, who's playing in the next Legends match on 7 September, against Celtic Legends at Old Trafford. The second part will come in a couple of weeks, with Scholes discussing Kobbie Mainoo in detail. Our Patrons get an extra 20 minutes of conversation on fixture congestion, United Women and whether there's any chance United could be involved in a title race and, if so, for how long.
