Hello, and welcome to Hall G at the first annual GOCA-CON!  We can pipe dream, can't we?  In the meantime, The Guys will live vicariously through those who were privileged to attend the 2024 version of what used to be a comic book convention, now the site of every major reveal in geek media.   The announcements were plenty: RDJr reappears with a different metal mask, Harrison Ford enters the MCU and seems to be embarrassed  (or is his face red for another reason?), and the Fantasticar flies around Hall H along with the cast of F4.  And that was just Marvel.  In other Marvel news, Jay discovers a super cooking show, Art relives his travels during the Crowdstrike pandemic, and Robbie doubles up with another Star Wars show on the horizon and a Netflix adaptation of Dragon's Lair, featuring Ryan Reynolds playing…Ryan Reynolds.   Apparently all roads lead to Marvel on this episode, since it was a marvel that Art made it home without having to rent a car.  Except the golden age superhero emblazoned with all the colors, that unfortunately gets a 3 Regrettables rating.  Every week is GOCA-CON!

Hey everyone, Marvel Studios's SDCC panel for 2024 has now come and gone… and we, of course, have tons of new details from their upcoming projects to discuss. However, most of it - I thought - was pretty superfluous and felt like a lot of information that didn't really mean much in the long run. There were some awesome details such as learning we'll be getting the Fantasticar in the upcoming Fantastic Four film, now (weirdly) titled ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps'. That's the one upcoming MCU project that has trumped all my concerns in the MCU because of how much I love those characters. Despite all the details regarding Fantastic Four, Thunderbolts* and Captain America: Brave New World that we got, the only things I really wanted to discuss here is, of course, the return of the Russo Brothers to direct Avengers 5 & 6, now titled ‘Doomsday' and ‘Secret Wars' respectively AND, more controversially, the return of Robert Downey Jr. to the MCU. However, he isn't returning as Iron Man but rather legendary Marvel Comics (normally Fantastic 4) villain, Doctor Doom. Here, I break down all the news relating to Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars so make sure to listen if you're hyped about the upcoming culmination of The Multiverse Saga.

In this episode:Mike and Ed discuss Reed Richards's invitation to speak at New York State University, where he studied many years ago. While he was giving his speech, the campus was attacked by Diablo and a robotic “Dragon Man”. Is it irresponsible to invite superheroes to public events given that they seem to be magnets for supervillains? Do superheroes have their own security like other celebrities, or is having superpowers security enough?Behind the comic:Marvel began like DC by using imaginary locations like Metropolis and Gotham, although Stan quickly pivoted to having the Fantastic Four based in New York City. But he still used imaginary locations for smaller cities, African and Eastern European countries, and in this issue, a university. We made the decision in the podcast to call Reed's alma mater “New York State University”, but in the issue Stan just calls it “State U”. The other interesting set of events that we do not talk about in the episode is Stan's use of cameo appearances. Apparently while Reed is touring the campus, so is Peter Parker, who is scouting future universities, and Charles Xavier and Scott Summers (Cyclops), who are interviewing students to find more mutants. None of these heroes get involved in the conflict. Perhaps they did not want to wait around for Reed's speech? In this issue:Fantastic Four #35The Fantastic Four land their Fantasticar at State University, as Reed has been invited to give a speech. He is warmly received. At the same time, Charles Xavier and Scott Summers are on campus, secretly looking for new mutants. Meanwhile, Diablo escapes his earthly imprisonment in Europe and heads straight to America to take his revenge on the Fantastic Four. He arrives at the university, and brings a robot that a university scientist created to life. The robot, which looks like a biped dinosaur and is nicknamed Dragon Man, battles the Four along with Diablo at the University, with the battle shifting out of town. The Four ultimately emerge victorious with the assistance of Dragon Man, who turned on Diablo and pulled him into an icy lake with him to their apparent doom.Journey into Mystery #113:Thor refuses to return to Asgard as his father, Odin, wants, as he has fallen in love with a mortal, Jane Foster. He returns to Earth and, in his Dr. Donald Blake identity, admits to Jane that he is actually Thor. Meanwhile, the Grey Gargoyle has returned and decided to search out and battle Thor. We return to Asgard, where Odin, having been manipulated somewhat by Loki, decides to depower Thor, which basically traps Thor in his Blake identity. The timing could not be worse, as Blake is unable to transform into Thor to show Jane who he really is; and because the Grey Gargoyle attacks Blake so that he can lure Thor out. Fortunately, Thor/Blake has friends in high places (Odin has secretly sent a warrior from Asgard to help his son), and he is helped out, and eventually his ability to turn into Thor is restored. He defeats the Grey Gargoyle, as Thor, and as Blake, he basically allows Jane to think he had made up the whole “I am the god of thunder” thing.Assumed before the next issue:People are starting to question the safety of being around superheroes. Oh, the irony. This episode takes place:After the Fantastic Four have defeated Diablo. This is a public episode. In this episode:Mike and Ed discuss the ramifications of another super-powered individual entering the scene. How many more are there, and where are they coming from? Are they all the result of government experiments of sending people into space? Also: when will consumers get access to flying cars?In the actual comic:The Fantastic Four are popular celebrities, and they are enjoying their status. They fly across town in their Fantasticar to take in a show by the Miracle Man, a performer who demonstrates amazing powers for the crowd - he can change size at will, turn into gas, shoot lightning from his fingertips, and take on the Thing. The Four do not know what to make of him as they fly home over the city (sidebar: when will we get flying cars?)The Miracle Man then, strangely, declares war on the human race, and the Four are called into action. They fight a giant monster that the Miracle Man has brought to life, and then take the fight to the Man himself, who snuffs the Torch's fire out with chemical foam and causes the earth to swallow the Thing.Reed thinks hard about the problem, but does not do anything. Meanwhile, the Invisible Girl locates the Miracle Man, but before she can alert her teammates, she is captured by the Miracle Man and hypnotized. He has Sue signal the rest of the team (maybe he should have just waited for Sue to do that before he hypnotized her), and when they arrive, they battle. The Fantastic Four gain the upper hand when they temporarily blind the Miracle Man. Reed then lets everyone know that he figured out that the Miracle Man did not have any magic powers - he was merely a clever hypnotist, and a master of mass illusion. We can think of many other ways the Miracle Man could have used his incredible, but not magical or miraculous, powers than picking a fight with super-powered heroes, but that is neither here nor there. In any event, Johnny Storm is unhappy with how he has been treated by his teammates (he is a teenager and a bit of a sulk), and quits the team. Assumed before the next episode:The public is likely worried that the Human Torch has left the team. This episode takes place:About a month after the events in the comic. Brutacus Is Silly But He Really Illustrates, etc. Hello, and welcome to episode 346 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four. If you had bet money against The Salem Seven (as the cover has them) returning in a story featuring Nicholas Scratch, then your wallet is now a bit lighter. Every(no)body's favourite super-villain team is back to remind us all what makes them so unique, as they seek to aid Scratch in returning to Earth, taking it over, and making his facial hair the memetic piece of graphic design that he so wants it to be. Doug Moench, Bill Sienkiewicz, Joe Sinnott, George Roussos, Jim Novak, Jim Salicrup, Bob Budiansky, and Jim Shooter present Fantastic Four #223 - That A Child May Live, featuring a rebuilt and expanded Fantasticar, an ineffective prison, a demon hunter who arouses absolutely no interest from our hosts, and a reaction you'll have to hear to believe. Face Front Hello, and welcome to episode 308 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four. To be very blunt, Marvel Two-in-One #51 is a Very Good Comic. Guest writer Peter Gillis crafts a story where The Thing has to team up with Nick Fury and some newer Avengers to defend the SHIELD Helicarrier, and on the strength of the writing, this would be a pretty good comic. But then there's the guest art from Frank Miller, at a very early stage in his career, and he takes the issue to an entirely new level. Peter Gillis, Frank Miller, Bob McLeod, Glynis Wein, Tom Orzechowski, Roger Stern, Jim Shooter, and George Perez present Marvel Two-in-One #51, with Ms Marvel, The Beast, Wonder Man, Nick Fury, a fantastic red alert, and an unstable Fantasticar. And on top of this, we also spend time with Godzilla, King Of The Monsters #22, where it turns out that dumping Godzilla through a time machine wasn't the best idea in the world, and Ben Grimm eats Doctor Doom's time platform. But before all of that, we sit down to give our very immediate thoughts on the passing of Fantastic Four co-creator and Marvel figurehead Stan Lee. Recorded within half an hour of the news of his passing breaking, we discuss our personal experiences meeting Stan, and his impact on us.
