Episode 74 - Moon Knight - City of the Dead This week we are continue our look at recent Moon Knight series. First up we dive into issues number 21-24 of the currently Moon Knight comic, and then its on to the 5-issue limited series City of the Dead, where we see the comic debut of a character fans of the TV show are already very familiar with. This Week's Stack Moon Knight (2021-2023) #21-24 Moon Knight: City of the Dead (2023) #1-5 Issue Recaps and Discussion Topics Moon Knight (2021-2023) #21-24 21 - The Reese issue (with a Jake cameo) 22 - Follow the money 22 - This is when he's happy 23 - Resolution through non-violence 24 - Morpheus enters The Big Sleep courtesy of Black Spectre 24 – He tries to give Mark, Steven and Jake some peace before he goes Moon Knight: City of the Dead (2023) #1-5 Cross-pollination – New characters starting in TV or movies and then making the jump to comics is still unusual, but is happening more. This feels very much like something Doug Moench might have written. Reminds me a bit of Vol 3's “The Resurrection War.” See our PotMK episode entitled “It Turns Out He Was Only Mostly Dead” for more on that. A lot of character narration over the action. Characters introduced themselves every issue. Do all faiths end up in the Duat in the Marvel universe? This I do not understand. It also seems weird that there are cars and modern cities. This is a bit of a “greatest hits” album, bringing back almost all of MKs old foes – or at least the truly villainous ones. No Scarlett, for instance. Legion of the Unliving is quite the name. It's always Randall when you least expect it! We have a Khonshu sighting Also is a bit weird, in that it finishes with Layla saying “Be Seeing you, Marc.” Will she?? On Earth? Or back in the Duat? I think Lyla is back on earth. Resurrected for her help defeating Jackal Knight Randall What's up with him just completely forgetting about the fact he has a girlfriend? Greer deserves better than this guy. Final Thoughts What's Next Moon Knight (2021-2023) #25-30 Signoff Questions or comments We'd love to hear from you! Episode 05 Moon Knight After Moench and Sienkiewicz This week we are going to dig into the final issues of Moon Knight Volume 1, which were published in 1983 and 1984. This week sees both Bill Sienkiewicz and Doug Moench move on from the title, after which a rotating cast of writers and artists bring Moon Knight's first volume to a close. Our hero faces off against bad cops, teen hoodlums, and a homicidal teenage ballerina, and then flies off into the sunset (temporarily) as volume one winds down. Along the way we talk about team-ups, EC Comics, and what it means when a comic you enjoy is cancelled. The Stack for this week includes: Moon Knight Vol. 1, Issues #27-38 These comics are available online through Marvel Unlimited as well as in collected print editions. Questions or comments We'd love to hear from you! Email us at questions@phasesofthemoonknight.com or find us on Twitter @phasesofmk.

I am excited to welcome Eliot Borenstein to the podcast today to discuss his new monograph, Marvel Comics in the 1970s: The World Inside Your Head, published through Cornell University Press in 2023. Eliot is Professor of Russian and Slavic Studies at New York University. He has published a number of books: Soviet-Self-Hatred: The Secret Identities of Postsocialism (Cornell University Press, 2023); Plots against Russia: Conspiracy and Fantasy after Socialism (Cornell University Press, 2019); Men without Women: Masculinity and Revolution in Russian Fiction, 1917-1929 (Cornell University Press, 2000); and Overkill: Sex Violence, and Russian Popular Culture after 1991 (Cornell University Press, 2008). Marvel Comics in the 1970s focuses on five writers, all born between 1945 and 1948, and their iconic takes on characters and titles: Steve Engelhart's Shang-Chi and Doctor Strange; Doug Moench's Master of Kung Fu; Marv Wolfman's Tomb of Dracula; Don McGregor's Black Panther and Luke Cage; and Steve Gerber's Howard the Duck. In particular, the book explores how subjectivity and the self are expressed through the unique medium and genre constraints of 1970s-era Marvel comics. John Yargo is Visiting Assistant Professor of English at Boston College. He earned a PhD in English literature from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, specializing in the environmental humanities and early modern culture. In 2023, his dissertation won the J. Leeds Barroll Prize, given by the Shakespeare Association of America. His peer-reviewed articles have been published or are forthcoming in the Journal for Early Modern Culture Studies, Early Theatre, Studies in Philology, and Shakespeare Studies. He Is Styggor, And He Is Not Important Hello, and welcome to episode 364 of The Fantasticast. Each episode, Steve Lacey guides you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four. The end has arrived, and, well, it's probably about time. The creative team are departing the book to make way for a fresh start, but they've got some unfinished business to take care of. The Baxter Building and the surrounding city block are stuck in the Negative Zone, and Lorrie Melton is missing her boo. Can the Fantastic Four overcome civilian insurrection, and the least important villain see in the Fantastic Four to date, and make it back home to Franklin? Doug Moench, Roger Stern, Bill Sienkiewicz, Joe Sinnott, And Moore (but actually Al Milgrom and Frank Giacoia), George Roussos, Jim Novak, Bob Budiansky, Jim Salicrup, and Jim Shooter present Fantastic Four #231 - In All The Gathered Gloom. Featuring someone who is a gangster and not a Wolverine writer, someone who is not Magneto, someone who is not Jim Shooter, someone who is not Jerome Moore, and wouldn't you know it? Bill Sienkiewicz is inking, and he wants you to know it! Send in your feedback to fantastic4podcast@gmail.com, leave your comments at the libsyn site, or at www.TheFantasticast.com. Hello, and welcome to episode 362 of The Fantasticast. Each episode, Steve Lacey guides you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four. This time on the Fantasticast, we discover what happens after an all-action issue. Yes, it's the inevitable exposition, and there's plenty of it. From decaying cultures in the far future to the inside of a black hole, this issue is not short of great concepts, but can they be spun into an engaging story that stands alongside it's predecessor? Uh... Doug Moench, Bill Sienkiewicz, Joe Sinnott, George Roussos, Jim Novak, Bob Budiansky, Jim Salicrup, and Jim Shooter present Fantastic Four #230: Firefrost and the Ebon Seeker. Featuring lots of blatant rip-offs of recent science fiction films, a gratuitous Avengers appearance, and an astonishingly awful UK Number One single. Well, that bit isn't in the comic itself, but after last week, you do deserve a bit of warning. We're joined by Ben M., the inventor of our official S02 cocktail The Romita Alteration, to discuss Moon Knight #29. Moench & Sienkiewicz spin the dark, lyrical tale of a Jack Russell who's been hounded (no pun intended) across the world by a Satanic cult who want to use his wolf self to signal the End of Times. In desperation, he turns to old foe-cum-ally, Moon Knight.

Reed Richards: Master of Ethics Hello, and welcome to episode 358 of The Fantasticast. Each episode, Steve Lacey guides you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four. This time on the Fantasticast, we must, we must uncover the mysteries of Franklin's powers, by dressing him up as Professor X (with handy replica Cerebro) and hoping that he isn't too unhappy about a burger. And if this doesn't sound too great, don't worry - someone's read some 'science' and is oh-so-eager to show off their 'research'... Doug Moench, Bill Sienkiewicz, Joe Sinnott, George Roussos, Jim Novak, Gaspar Saladino, Bob Budiansky, Jim Salicrup, and Jim Shooter present Fantastic Four #228 - Ego-Spawn. Featuring a long look at the medical and scientific ethics at play, the worst way to manipulate your family so you can get your own way, and a prick in a vest.
