The Guys are well over 300 episodes into Season 1 of this podcast, which begs the question: at what point does it become, “Guys of a Certain Age, Born Again?”  The bigger question may be: is the world even ready for that?  (See show notes around episode 400 for details.)   This episode begins, as usual, with exciting news from the world of geekdom.  You heard it here second. Superman is ever closer with a tremendous trailer released, with some subtle changes and fodder for a product tie-in you might not have expected.  MAX seems to be channeling Prince and his identity crisis.  One iconic hero may get an extended cut, while another planned trilogy seems destined for a duology. There's a lot going on this week.   And not long ago, Daredevil: Born Again, Season 1 completed its run, and that's what The Guys hash out today.  Reviews are mixed among the gentlemen co-hosts, but no thumbs were down.  Even with a bit of “it was fine” in the air, there's still hope for Season 2, "Born Again Anew.” Please listen to this episode, then again.

It's another episode of Guys of a Certain Age*, soon to be known across the continents (or at least Antarctica) as The Old Offenders.  The studio could hardly contain all the excitement as The Void released Robbie, Art, and Jay long enough not just to go to the movie together, and not just talk about said movie together in a podcast episode, but to pay even less for said movie than the seasoned citizen rate.  Triple win.   Ditto with the Geeks of the Week: Robbie expands the Andor universe for all, Jay takes an imaginary joy ride through the forests of Endor, and Art contemplates the director of the next Thor movie, “Love and Thunderbolts*"  Then it's time to go to the movie.  It's time to grab the popcorn and the super serum and watch The New Avengers Formerly Known As Thunderbolts*.  The Guys agreed that Marvel is getting its groove back.  Strong characters (though largely unknown and apparently not actual comic Thunderbolts), meaningful plot dealing with actual current issues, plenty of action, a little darkness, and just enough humor.  Listen for all the details and spoilers and name changes (and it's not just the new pope.)

    The Regretful Regrettables

Play Episode Listen Later May 16, 2025 38:27

It's another fully regrettable episode.  Wait, who writes this stuff??  It's actually a full and complete episode made entirely of Jay's Regrettable Segments, where he pulls a semi-obscure (depending on who's listening) superhero from the archives of Jon Morris's book, The League of Regrettable Superheroes, then tells the story after a brief “brought to you by” ad from Art the Announcer Guy.  Said (or sad) superheroes are then rated as Regrettable, Redeemable, or Not Regrettable (super original, right?)   In this segment of segments, The Silver Age closes out with Spyman, then the heroes enter the Bronze and/or Modern Age, depending on how you define it, with Adam-X the X-treme, Holo-Man, and The Outsiders (probably not the ones you're thinking about.)  And like the Super Bowl, even if the heroes are regrettable, this one's worth listening to just for the ads.

The Guys are back!  And that means all three of them in the same room: the room where it happens, where they're not gonna give away their shot, and where (hopefully) they won't be shot in a duel of any kind.   That's right, Robbie himself went to see the broadway musical Hamilton with Jay, Robbie, and all the GOCA wives, with very little arm-twisting.  And Art sings a couple of lines with royal gusto (on the episode, not in the theater.)  Did it live up to the hype?  Was live better than Memorex? All these questions and more will be answered.   DC characters get a little love (or they will in 2026) in Geeks of the Week, but most of the action takes place in the Star Wars universe, or in Yaban, depending on how you say it.  One might say it's a Star Wars celebration.  Perhaps Lin-Manuel will write a song about it!

We've got another week without the full complement of Guys, but plenty of Geeks. Robbie and Art remember beloved game show host, Wink Martindale, share news of a Star Trek Red Alert experience at Universal Hollywood, and resurrect DC Deathwatch as Art cancels his DC Universe subscription.  The Guys also humbly bundle a series of random nerdy news notes, before hearing from Robbie about his recent trip to NAB in Vegas. Find out what he saw and his thoughts on why this annual broadcaster's convention has less of an impact than in years past and some thoughts on what the future may hold. Hopefully an episode with all three Guys!

One might say Robbie had leavin' on his mind for this episode, because there were definitely not 3 cigarettes in the (proverbial) ashtray on this episode.  Robbie went to Vegas, leaving Art and Jay to reminisce about their shared role in musical community theater.  It was almost crazy how these last minute roles in “Always, Patsy Cline” came about.  Let's just say it pays to know Art's cousin, as well as one of the Golden Triangle's favorite actresses.   Jessica Horton and Madeline Golden (not to mention the Silver Eagle Band) put on a stellar performance, and also allowed these two Guys to dance their way into regional stardom.  On this episode, they talk about their experience, with a little country music trivia thrown in just for fun.  And there were Geeks of the Week a'plenty.   Lots of trailers for big movies dropped this week, a well-done insurance commercial makes the cut, and there is news of fictional fantastic new life juxtaposed with the actual passing of some big stars with geek cred.  If you're walkin' after midnight under the blue moon of Kentucky, and need a podcast to keep you from falling to pieces, this is the one.

These Guys are of such a Certain Age, they could be called “Vinyl.”  But just like vinyl records, they are timeless, have a nostalgic sound, and will hopefully, one day, make a comeback.  From what?  Who knows.  In this episode, it's a two-fer again, as Art went in the wrong door of the building an hour late and missed the recording.   Jay and Robbie carried on, though, to talk about vinyl, turntables, and other forms of musical recordings that have whispers of comebacks.  Robbie helps Jay figure out how to get his newly refurbished turntable to a state of listenability, they discuss their current (and growing) collections, and talk about an app that keeps Robbie from buying 3 copies of the same LP.  With Art gone, Geeks of the Week had to be bolstered a bit, but has that ever been a problem?   Here's the more-eclectic-than-usual lineup: new Oscar stunts, Pattinson's geek potential, Game of Clones, pizza with Yoda and friends, and an anniversary.  A little something for everyone.  You're welcome!  (And thanks for listening.)

The Guys are hungry this week, so hungry in fact that Art skipped recording to eat lunch.  Or was he replaced with a food-service robot?  Only dedicated listeners will be able to discern.   Jay kicks things off in Geeks of the Week with some of the new crazy food items available at MLB ballparks this summer, inspired by a story of his own childhood that took place only steps from the GOCA studio.  Robbie has news from the world of Dollar Twenty-Five Tree and delivers a tidbit from FedEx.  And of course, there is news from The Tardis, aka the Dr. Who delivery service.  In the second half, Robbie tells the tale of a robot who served him cookies and milk in Vegas, and we're not talking about his son, Mark the Chef.  That leads to a thoughtful discussion on robotics in the world of food, and where it might lead, from cake decorating to perfectly designed salads.  There's even one for the home.   But not to worry, there are no podcasting robots here.  That's their story, and they are sticking to the story they were programmed to tell.

It's Doomsday for the Guys this week! But Robbie and Art decided to do a podcast anyway. Geeks of the Week include rumors of a David Ayer director's cut of Suicide Squad. This is the first one with Will Smith. Could a Chris Rock scene be included? Netflix looking at a live action series of a Scooby Doo origin story. Ruh-roh. On a serious note, there's an update on beloved poster artist Drew Struzan's health. As the final geek, we look at Apple using a Lumen-Terminal-Pro to tout the use of their hardware in editing Severance. However, they didn't use Apple's software, so it may also be Terminal-Pro.    Our main segment recaps the list of Marvel stars added to the roster of the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie. The list of who didn't is as interesting as who made the cut, and we talk about both. We didn't do the recap in a 5-hour live stream as the names were originally revealed. It only feels that way.

It was a scary day in the Guys of a Certain Age studio, and it wasn't just because Art was on hiatus.  Jay led off with his Geek of the Week, reporting on the legit Star Wars droids that made their debut at a recent Nvidia conference, giving Robbie flashbacks from Terminator.  But these droids are cuter.  Then Robbie told of the upset AppleTV+ cart and how much they were losing every year - and it's not a small number.   But as long as they keep pumping out the content, The Guys will keep watching, and today the focus was on Severance, Season 2.  The finale..finally…and Jay watched it almost as soon as it was dropped.  That's news right there, right?  Spoilers abound in the episode, but not in these lines.  Suffice it to say that Jay and Robbie have high praise for it, and it's not just because of the soundtrack - but that certainly played a role.  And a drum. And a trombone.  And…well, we'll stop here before that “no spoiler” promise is spoiled.  Look for fascinating transitions in the characters' lives, a significant color scheme variant, and an ending that may or may not surprise you.   If you're severed, you won't remember it tomorrow, anyway.

Is it Wolfs or Wolves?  Mrs. Reed and the grammar police would use the “v” but AppleTv+ begs to differ in the title to its Clooney-PItt buddy movie, Wolfs.  Robbie and Art give it two howls while Jay makes it reluctantly unanimous.  Perhaps Jay should have just watched the movie without reading all the plot descriptions first.   But as a whole, The Guys agree that it's fun, it shows the classic talents of George and Brad, and also shows promise to a newish actor known primarily as “the kid”.   And this week, for the first time, the Geek of the Week segment has an international correspondent reporting in, which means…they have a listener!  Jay might just take a hypersonic flight to Australia so he can also report from afar.  Social media critics pan Superman's dog in Gunn's DCU, and a Star Wars museum of galactic proportions is in the works.  Jay's Regrettable Segment tells of another Fab Four that are neither fantastic nor musical.   Be sure to listen to the Fab Three on this episode of the best buddy podcast of all!

Welcome to Guys of a Certain Age's audio children's book: Jay and Robbie go to the Emmy Awards.  And like everything else the Guys talk about on this podcast, this trip was only in their imagination.  In fact, the bar began pretty low: they didn't expect to have watched many of the shows that won awards, thus the extreme lack of hurry in getting this episode onto the interwebs.  But as it turned out, they were a little bit wrong (also like many things discussed on this podcast…), because The Bear won just about every category it was nominated in, including some of the categories that only Robbie understands.  And they watched that one.   Meanwhile, as Art was out of range this week, Jay picked up the slack and followed up on his pretzel-fume reporting from a few episodes back, and wish-listed a trip to Australia for a Venom collab with Pizza Hut.  Robbie shone his green lantern on some casting announcements for the DCU, or whatever we're calling it this week.  And an old character rises from the grave, more or less, to appear in Jay's Regrettable segment - looks like a bat, acts like a bat, but it's not who you think.

We share "Good Times" and other memories of a beloved actor, and cover the bases with a "should-be" Hall of Famer. We also look back at the magical career of one of our favorite Dames.   Make sure to listen to this episode with the biggest speakers you can find.

Once in a while, The Guys will talk about Emmy and Oscar winners, but it's not often they get to interview one.   This episode is no exception: Donna Cutting hasn't won either of those awards, but she at least has attended the ceremonies, which is a lot closer than any of The Guys have been.  Donna has also been an extra in a major motion picture, and in a scene that wasn't cut, to boot!  She's an author, a speaker, a seat-filler, and may just be the one person that can convince Robbie of the value of musical theater.   It's time to pull your McLego race car to the curb for a moment, pour a cuppa Earl Grey as if you were captain Picard, and light up one of many green lanterns, to set the mood for this soon-to-be Tony award nominated podcast episode.  Roll out the red carpet and experience one of The Guys' favorite new guests.

They say that boys never grow up, they just get bigger toys.  They also say that guys of a certain age never grow up and may or may not still have lots of the old toys they played with before they grew older. At the very least, they remember them fondly.   And that's the subject of today's episode: the Toy Hall of Fame inductees at the Strong Museum in Rochester, NY.  The nominees and past inductees run the gamut, from sticks and cardboard boxes to Dungeons & Dragons, and everything in between.  The only surprises may be the toys that haven't yet made the cut.  In the Geeks of the Week segment, DC features strongly in this one, with the debut of the Christopher Reeves documentary and Batman's newest accolade on the eve of yet another National Batman Day.   This episode was not recorded on an iPhone, but Robbie tells of a movie coming to theaters that was filmed with one.  Or maybe more than one.  Pretend to pop a bowl of popcorn with the 2023 hall of fame inductee, the Fisher Price rolling corn popper - or have your kid roll it around while you listen under a 2011 winner, the blanket.

Imagine this line in the deepest voice possible: This…is Guys of a Certain Age. (GNN sounds better but Guys, Nerds and Nitwits doesn't quite hold up.)  If only the Guys could have had James Earl Jones voice the intro, surely the ad revenue would have moved into double digits.  Alas, the voice of Darth Vader and one of the most memorable actors of our day has passed, and the first half of the episode is dedicated to remembering the life and career of Mississippi native James Earl Jones.   No geeks.  No regrettables.  Just one of the coolest voices on the planet being discussed by three less cool, but highly respectful, voices.  And one of the highest GOCA Geek Index scores yet.   After the break, the mood changes a bit to a celebration of 85 years of Marvel.  Art, Jay and Robbie give their top moments of those 85 years, from the comics pages to the big screen, with a few plot twists thrown in to make it interesting.  Listen to this one as if JEJ was speaking it…and marvel.

Just because this episode is about “last things” doesn't mean it's the last episode.  In fact, it could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship - or of 100 more episodes.  And just like Casablanca, Guys of a Certain Age is destined to be a classic.   In this episode, Jay quizzes Art and Robbie to test their knowledge on famous last lines of movies, stretching back to near 100 years of movie making.  Then they turned the discussion to what was important about movie closings compared to book openings, whether or not end-credit scenes upset the balance, and why Art knew all the answers.   In this week's Geeks, Jay found the perfect cologne for the food court crowd, Art says “see you later, T.Wai-tator,” and Robbie orders a new set of Blu-Rays to watch on his way to Universal Studios Hollywood.  Listen to this one and remember: it's the stuff dreams are made of.

The Guys have hit the big time.  It's Episode #300!   Who would have thought they would go from a meat-and-three lunch to a meat-and-three-hundred conversations about … well, almost everything?  Who knew that a “certain age” would be 300? And who guessed that the people at Comic Code (aka Mrs. Reed) would let them keep rambling for that long?  Probably nobody.   But with episode 301 already in the proverbial can, there's a good chance they'll keep going at least a week or two.  Very little chance, however, that Jay will start going by another name, like Michael Keaton is doing.  Nor will Art be a guest on the ManningCast (but negotiations are underway for a host swap).   And Robbie won't likely be considered for the role of Green Lantern, but let's get that rumor started anyway, shall we?  Listeners to this episode will get a chance to vote regrettable or redeemable for a record 4 comic superheroes of the gold and silver ages.  Plus, you can decide which of The Guys is most likely to play the role of Brain Boy, Zippo, Brother Power the Geek, or Bee-Man.  Be sure to vote “redeemable” for the podcast, and stick around for 100 more episodes!

Are there any movie remakes better than the originals?  Are there any podcast episodes better than this one?  Let's stick to the first question and plead the fifth on the second, shall we?   The Guys look at a legion of movies that, to some degree or another, are remakes of movies made anywhere from 10 to many years before, and some were remade multiple times.  Some got a definite nod (hello, Dune) while others perhaps should have left very well enough alone and waxed off.  That makes this The Guys' incomplete guide to movies that should or should not have been tried and tried again.   In this week's Geeks, Robbie gets into presidential mode with a new book on the way, Jay rethinks clicking that he's read and agrees to all those terms and conditions, and Art heads for the borderlands.  Leave a five star review, or face the possibility that this episode could be remade.

It's the podcast that's rated SM-R (Sorry, Mrs. Reed) but has still managed to avoid that pesky explicit rating - It's Guys of a Certain Age!   Also the podcast that's made approximately $27.50 in advertising over almost 300 episodes - they have a ways to catch up to Deadpool and Wolverine, which is shattering box office records one after the other.  And that doesn't even include the 116 F-bombs and the special edition chimichanga at Disneyland.  It had all the surprise cameos, all the easter eggs, all the cultural references, all the Reynolds/Lively family, all the Deadpools and all the Wolverines from all the universes (or is it universi?), and did we mention, all the F-bombs?  The Guys agreed it was quite the spectacle, but still hit all the buttons of great superhero action, plot twists, tear potential, comic fan service, and fourth wall interaction.   Mrs. Reed is unlikely to see it in theaters or anywhere else, but The Guys are ready to see it again.  Spoilers abound, so beware!

It's not a rom-com, but it has both rom and com with an extra-large side of Twister fries. Twisters, the movie, is the surprise hit of the summer, and also of note: The Guys all saw it in the theater, with their wives, and within a few days of being in the theater for another film.  But this one didn't star Ryan Reynolds.  In fact, perhaps the biggest name in this tornado-flick-sans-sharks was an amazing singer who didn't get to sing.  The plot line was pleasantly predictable, but hey - so is this podcast.  The Guys recommend this one 100% and especially in the theater, but if you can't do that, at least find a large TV with a surround sound system, and turn the ceiling fan on high.   Geeks this week include: The US Mint does a cross-over with DC and you can help! Batman Caped Crusader has made it to Prime!  And if you live near enough to an IMAX theater, Interstellar is celebrating 10 years with a re-release in those big, tall, round theaters.  Not the Globe… not the Sphere…the other ones.  In fact, you should listen to this episode in an IMAX ear theater.
