In this special episode of the podcast, Mike is joined by TJ Stukes from Squid Game to discuss what they liked and what could have been improved about the first Captain America movie starring Sam Wilson, including its ramifications (if any) with respect to the Multiverse Saga and the overall future of the MCU.
Captain America: Brave New World marks the beginning of the second half of The Multiverse Saga. This installment weaves long-dangling threads from 2008's Incredible Hulk, events from Captain America: Civil War, and a world-shifting revelation from Eternals into an action-forward political thriller. In keeping with early Captain America storylines, Brave New World blends its “state of the sociopolitical landscape” level-set into a plot driven by high-stakes mission and a changing of the political guard. If you're coming into Captain America: Brave New World off of a (re)watch of The Falcon and the Winter Solider series, temper those expectations. In director Julius Onah's (Luce) film, Wilson may no longer be conflicted about assuming the mantle of Captain America; but he is wrestling with his role in the US military industrial complex, the pressure to be an unassailable Black hero, and taking repeated hits to his sense of self in an anti-Black system. It's a subtle (often too subtle), but intentional, schism at play throughout the entire movie. But it pays to remember, Sam Wilson's tenure as Captain America has just begun. This is not the moment he shakes off the fetters of respectability. Just like in the comics, Wilson's path forward is a more measured and pragmatic approach to combating inequity and defending against evil; seeming to operate within the realm of current reality rather than aggressively rejecting and dismantling oppressive ideologies and their attendant institutions. As a veteran and counselor (who specialized in helping other veterans suffering from PTSD) he openly advocated for the necessity of harm mitigation while carving out sustainable solutions. He still believes that despite the obstacles and judgment that we (society) can do better. Think John Lewis, not Stokely Carmichael. And that fact alone will be reason enough for some viewers to bounce off Brave New World. Hello and welcome to Bill vs the MCU! Each month your hosts Pop Break Podcasting Director Alex Marcus and Pop Break Editor in Chief Bill Bodkin are taking another step into the wider Marvel Multiverse as the MCU dives deeper into their Multiverse Saga. Bill & Alex spent all of 2022 rewatching the first four phases of the MCU, and they just spent 2023 covering the first phase of Netflix's The Defenders Saga and the first four seasons of ABC's Agents of SHIELD. This year, they journeyed into Fox's X-Verse with their X-Treme X-Watch. Now they are back with their Defenders Disassembled miniseries, where they take a tour through all the final seasons of every Marvel Netflix series as they get ready for the triumphant return of Matt, Karen, Foggy, and Frank in Daredevil: Born Again this spring. First, Bill & Alex won't be doing a proper MCU check in episode until January, when they review Echo and Agatha All Along after they've wrapped up their Defenders coverage, but, recently Marvel Studios released a full rundown of everything to expect from Marvel on Disney Plus in 2025 and released a few new film trailers at their D23 event in Brazil. The 2025 slate of projects include three animated series, three live action series, and, over on the big screen, three feature films, for a total of nine Marvel projects over the next twelve months, and Bill & Alex decided to rank how hyped they are for each. After that, stick around for an in depth discussion of the third and final season of Marvel's Daredevil. The season pays off the cliffhanger that ended The Defenders, answering the question just how Matt survived an entire skyscraper falling on him and only to wake up being tended to by nuns. It also brings back Vincent D'Onofrio's Wilson Fisk and sets up a showdown between Matt and a new foe with killer aim who may or may not be the comic character known as Bullseye. Watch along with us! Hey everyone, Marvel Studios's SDCC panel for 2024 has now come and gone… and we, of course, have tons of new details from their upcoming projects to discuss. However, most of it - I thought - was pretty superfluous and felt like a lot of information that didn't really mean much in the long run. There were some awesome details such as learning we'll be getting the Fantasticar in the upcoming Fantastic Four film, now (weirdly) titled ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps'. That's the one upcoming MCU project that has trumped all my concerns in the MCU because of how much I love those characters. Despite all the details regarding Fantastic Four, Thunderbolts* and Captain America: Brave New World that we got, the only things I really wanted to discuss here is, of course, the return of the Russo Brothers to direct Avengers 5 & 6, now titled ‘Doomsday' and ‘Secret Wars' respectively AND, more controversially, the return of Robert Downey Jr. to the MCU. However, he isn't returning as Iron Man but rather legendary Marvel Comics (normally Fantastic 4) villain, Doctor Doom. It's a light news week, so we're entertaining a bit of an unsubstantiated rumor coming from reputable insider Daniel Richtman, who suggested that Wesley Snipes could reprise his role as Blade ‘at some point in the MCU's Multiverse Saga. Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy is making its way back to the big screen this summer; as Warner Bros and Fathom Events re-releases the films in theaters beginning with The Fellowship of the Ring on June 8, then The Two Towers on June 9, followed by The Return of the King on June 10. The animated film The War of the Rohirrim also hits theaters in December and Amazon it's expected to air the second season of The Rings of Power sometime in the fall or winter. During his new profile with Vanity Fair, Chris Hemsworth reflected on his career and his work on Thor: Love & Thunder, specifically. The actor described his performance as ‘too silly' and opined that he had become a parody of himself. Hemsworth said he feels he owes fans another Thor film to make up for Love & Thunder's failings and described his upcoming role in Furiosa as something starkly contrasting his most popular roles. Directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland, the film marks the return of the original team, with Cillian Murphy serving as executive producer, aiming to expand the franchise into a trilogy. Julia Garner, known for her Emmy-winning role in Ozark, is set to star opposite Josh Brolin in the upcoming horror film Weapons from director Zach Cregger. Garner's rising star continues to shine as she lands major roles, including playing the Silver Surfer in Marvel's upcoming Fantastic Four. Independent distributor Vertical released a trailer for The Exorcism starring Russell Crowe as a troubled actor who begins to unravel while working on a supernatural horror film. Sony has moved Kraven the Hunter to the prime winter spot of Dec. 13, 2024 (back from Aug. 30, 2024). Kraven steps into a date that was occupied by fellow Sony pic The Karate Kid, a crossover event movie starring Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan. Karate Kid now moves to May 30, 2025 In an IP rights deal with game company Hasbro, Sony has gained the exclusive TV and film rights to the board game Clue.
