The Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) might not make headlines today, but it was the first treaty negotiated under the World Health Organization—and it changed the global public health landscape forever. In this episode of the Public Health Insight Podcast, Dr. Garry Aslanyan returns to unpack the story behind this groundbreaking treaty. We explore how the FCTC was negotiated in an era before Zoom calls and WhatsApp, the political and economic tensions that shaped its development, and how it continues to influence tobacco control policies worldwide—despite evolving challenges like vaping, flavored products, and social media marketing. From legal battles with Big Tobacco to global policy coordination, we break down why this treaty still matters for local public health professionals.References for Our Discussion◼️TDR◼️Global Health Matters PodcastGuest◼️Dr Garry AslanyanHost(s) & Producer(s)◼️ Gordon Thane, BMSc, MPH, PMP®Production Notes◼️ Music from Johnny Harris x Tom Fox: The Music RoomSubscribe to the NewsletterSubscribe to The Insight newsletter so you don't miss out on the latest podcast episodes, live events, job skills, learning opportunities, and other engaging professional development content here.Leave Us Some FeedbackIf you enjoy our podcasts, be sure to subscribe and leave us a rating on Apple Podcast or Spotify, and spread the word to your friends to help us get discovered by more people. What's right: global tobacco use drop

Since 2005, global tobacco use has dropped by one-third, with 118 million fewer smokers, according to WHO research. A key driver of this progress is the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC), one of the most widely embraced UN treaties. The FCTC, in effect for 20 years, regulates both tobacco supply and demand. With 183 parties covering 90% of the global population, it has led to major policy changes. Today, 138 countries require graphic health warnings on cigarette packs, dozens enforce plain packaging, 66 ban tobacco advertising, and over 25% of the world's population benefits from smoke-free laws. Higher taxes also make tobacco less affordable while funding health initiatives. In 2018, a legal protocol was introduced to combat illicit tobacco trade, which weakens control measures and fuels crime. Despite this progress, tobacco remains the leading cause of preventable death, linked to heart disease, cancer, stroke, and more. The industry, facing declining cigarette sales, now pushes e-cigarettes—misleadingly marketed as safer—while continuing to target young people. Only 56 countries are on track to meet the goal of a 30% reduction in tobacco use by 2025. Still, cutting global smoking rates by one-third is a major public health victory.

From Crisis to Crisis - The Married Years (A Superman and Lois Podcast)

Welcome to the two hundredth and seventieth episode of From Crisis to Crisis - The Married Years: A Superman and Lois Podcast!  This podcast has a simple premise; examine just about every Superman comic published between Man of Steel #1 in 1986 to Adventures of Superman #649 in 2006 in an informative and hopefully entertaining format. The nuptials are out of the way, so it's time for Mike and Jeff to talk about Lois and Clark's honeymoon! Things start out normal enough...at least normal for Lois and Clark...with the reception followed by a trip to Hawaii in Adventures of Superman #541. Then a supposed monster starts tearing up the place and Superboy shows up and Lois lies but doesn't lie about being a member of the Special Crimes Unit. Things really go pear shaped when Clark is shot at the end of the issue and kidnapped, leaving an angry Lois behind to save the day. Then, in Action Comics #728, Clark finds that his kidnapper is none other than Mister Naga, brother to the man Lois caused to be locked up in the wedding album. It seems that Lois has something that Naga wants back. Clark thinks back to a time when he was in a similar situation as Superman, which allows the creative teams to actually have a costumed Superman with powers show up during this storyline. Finally, in Superman: The Man of Steel #63 it's Lois to the rescue as the honeymoon comes to an action packed and explosive end! From Crisis to Crisis - The Married Years (A Superman and Lois Podcast)

Welcome to the two hundredth and sixty-ninth episode of  From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast!  Actually…that's not true anymore. Welcome to the two hundredth and sixty-ninth episode of From Crisis to Crisis – The Married Years: A Superman and Lois Podcast! That's right. Now that Mike and Jeff have reached the actual, factual wedding (and now that the official feed for the show is changing) they felt that a change in title was in order. The show hasn't really changed. In fact, the numbering is the same, but something had to be done to mark that this momentous occasion has happened. This podcast still has a simple premise; examine just about every Superman comic published between Man of Steel #1 in 1986 to Adventures of Superman #649 in 2006 in an informative and hopefully entertaining format. This is it, folks! Finally…Lois and Clark get hitched! Well, not right away. First Mike and Jeff have to talk about Superman #118, which is the issue right before the wedding. Lois Lane is in on the trail of a drug dealer and meets someone that takes her on a quest that leads her to realize that maybe she still has feelings for Clark. Meanwhile, Superman still doesn't have any powers and does some tests to see why that is. During the test Superman gets a pep talk from Wonder Woman. Then, in Superman: The Wedding Album #1, the very first Triangle Era Special, Lois and Clark reunite and after a tense conversation the engagement is back on and it's all about planning the ceremony. It's an all-star effort on the creative side and the boys cover the bachelor party, the bridal dinner, Lois picking out her dress, the search for a new apartment, the rehearsal dinner, Sam Lane acting like a jerk, and then…FINALLY…the wedding ceremony itself. After that, Mike and Jeff discuss the third episode of season four of Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman titled Swear to God, This Time We're Not Kidding. It's the television wedding of Lois and Clark and the coverage of this one is much more positive than the last episodes of Lois and Clark. The boys even go easy on the “villain” of the episode. The From Crisis to Crisis love theme is by Lucian Desar. Welcome to the two hundredth and sixty-eighth episode of From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast!  This podcast has a simple premise; examine just about every Superman comic published between Man of Steel #1 in 1986 to Adventures of Superman #649 in 2006 in an informative and hopefully entertaining format. This time out Mike and Jeff look at the Superman related books that came out with a November 1996 cover date that weren't part of the Final Night event. Those books include Superman: The Man of Steel Annual #5, Superboy and the Ravers #3, Showcase '96 #10, Steel #32, and Justice League: A Midsummers Nightmare #3. After that they look at the first seven (or five, depending on how you want to look at it) episodes of Superman: The Animated Series, which premiered in September of 1996. Episodes discussed are The Last Son of Krypton Parts 1 thru 3, Fun and Games, A Little Piece of Home, Feeding Time, and The Way of All Flesh. For grins, they end their animated talk by chatting about the first issue of the tie-in comics Superman Adventures. Finally, they discuss Lord of the Flys and Battleground Earth, which are the first two episodes of Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Season 4. Mike would like to take this opportunity to apologize to those listeners that like or love the two episodes of Lois and Clark discussed in this episode. The boys talk with Mike about how he got into Superman, his early days working for Marvel, how he came to edit the Superman titles, how the Triangle method of storytelling came about, the Death and Return of Superman and so much more. Mike was very generous with his time and both Mike (the host Mike that is) and Jeff appreciate that he took the time to speak with them. Plus! Final Night concludes! And the Sun Eater causes the sun to go nova, and everyone dies. End of show. Just kidding! The road to the end of Final Night begins with Mike and Jeff looking at Superman: The Man of Steel #62, which not only focuses on Superman helping the brave workers at the Metropolis power station get said station back on line after the roof collapses but also shows Professor Hamilton viewing the holograms of Jor-El trying to save the population of Krypton during the planet's final days. There's also a sub-plot of Perry and his family heading to the Daily Planet and putting out the next edition despite the power being out and the world potentially coming to an end. Then the boys look at Flash #119, Hitman #8, and Legion of Super-Heroes #86, because those issues seem to take place before the final issue of the main series. Then the rubber meets the road in Final Night #4, where Superman makes the decision to fly the ship that's going to take the thingy to stop the Sun Eater. He doesn't get the chance when Ferro Lad kind of, sort of steals the ship but even his attempts at self-sacrifice fall through when Hal Jordan decides that he is going to be the one to save the day. Finally, the boys chat about the final three crossover issues, which come in the form of Robin #35, Takion #6, and Spectre #47. (Continuing the march towards the wedding, here is a re-upload of an episode of FCTC's coverage of Final Night! Enjoy!) Welcome to the two hundredth and sixty-fifth episode of From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast!  This podcast has a simple premise; examine just about every Superman comic published between Man of Steel #1 in 1986 to Adventures of Superman #649 in 2006 in an informative and hopefully entertaining format. Final Night continues! This time out Mike and Jeff continue their coverage of Final Night by looking at the main books and crossovers that came out during Week Three! First up is Action Comics #727, which sees Superman doing a bit of a retro thing by jumping instead of flying. He's not doing it to be cool or old school, though. Nope. His powers continue to fade away as the sun continues to be consumed by the Sun Eater. Bad guys use the chaos to steal several Special Crimes Unit battle suits, which Superman has to deal with as an unnamed man has to make his way through a snow covered Metropolis and learns about the good and bad of humanity. Mike also gives a quick history lesson in the middle of the notes where he probably gets something wrong. Then, in Final Night #3, things go from bad to apocalyptic. Ted Knight, the Golden Age Starman, does some figuring and realizes that the diameter of the sun is off. It turns out that Sun Eater's feeding cycle involves causing the star it is eating to go nova, which is great for the Sun Eater, because it propels it to the next star, but is kind of bad for all life in the system the sun provides light for. Finally, the boys look at the other crossover issues which include Final Night Parallax Emerald Night #1, Superboy #33, Aquaman #26, and Detective Comics #703! Dalam episode pertama Paper Dialogue di tahun 2023, KANOPI FEB UI berkesempatan mengundang Bapak Abdillah Ahsan, selaku kepala Lembaga Demografi FEB UI, untuk berdialog mengenai paper “FCTC Ratification, Smoking Prevalence, and GDP per capita: lessons for Indonesia and the rest of the world,” yang beliau tulis bersama dengan beberapa peneliti lainnya. Byron Bay metal maestros From Crisis To Collapse have been strangely subdued of late. Since decimating the senses of a generation of metal lovers with their album The Seventh Tree in 2019 the band has toured relentlessly on the back of that, but metal fans being the impatient and demanding people we are their loyal legion of fans were waiting - salivating even - for the release of the next chapter. Well, ladies and metalheads, the wait is almost over, with FCTC announcing the impending arrival of their latest masterpiece Needlepoint. Although not yet having a release date, the mere promise of new madness has sparked interest throughout the metal community, with vocalist Angus Carter sitting down with HEAVY to set the record straight. "It has been a little while, mate," he acknowledged. "I think we'd all sat around in hiatus a little bit once the whole climate of things shifted, just trying to figure out what was going to be the best plan of attack, like a lot of bands and musicians around, I reckon. That led to having a lot of shows called off, a lot of plans changed, so it was time to get in the studio and do some tracks." One of the perks of the job is getting to ask for advance copies of new music, for research purposes of course, and as much as I appreciate bands obliging when one comes along as good as this you have to just sit back and thank the Metal Gods. "The music video is definitely very fitting with some creepy stuff," Carter continued. "Like always, Ian brings something - as he does with most of the tracks - and Chad contributes his beautiful tones as well, Marco obviously does the drums and Unai on bass, so as always the composition of the music was left up to the musicians. I myself sit on the sidelines and watch them create. From the get go, it was always an intense song. We played around with the intro a bit, pulling it in and out of sets and stuff like that, but we kind of stuck with the way the song was first written and stayed true to that and here we are." This time around, FCTC seem more aggressive and purposeful, as though they know now they truly belong, and with that realization comes a wealth of confidence that puts a huge stamp on Needlepoint. Even Carter, who already has an intense-as-fuck stage presence, has stepped things up vocally on this track, with the vocalist nodding in agreement at the mention. "We definitely… there was a lot of, I guess, adversity and emotion in this song and some of the lyrics", he measured." "Maybe all of us in the band don't necessarily think or have to share the exact same opinion on things in life, but this subject was quite close to my heart. There was definitely some rage in there and trying to do some different things and get some intensity in the deliverance and more aggression." In the full interview, Angus talks more about Needlepoint, runs us through some of the concepts for the video clip and fan expectation around the final product, the band's sound and where it comes from, potential new music, their upcoming tour plans and more.

The Institute of Economic Affairs hosted a discussion on the Impact of COP9 on Vapers. For the first time since leaving the European Union, in November 2021, the UK will send a delegation to the World Health Organisations Conference of Parties (COP) to the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. The Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) is an international treaty under the auspices of the WHO dedicated solely to tobacco control. COP is the supreme decision-making body of the FCTC, where all parties to the FCTC meet biennially to review the implementation of the convention and adopt the new guidance. The discussion centred on who represents the UK at COP, how decisions are reached (and whether we should listen to them), the impact of these decisions on the United Kingdom's harm reduction progress, and the 2030 smoke-free target. Plus much more. Our panel of expert speakers included IEA Director General Mark Littlewood (chair), Matt Ridley (Vice-Chair of the APPG on Vaping), Christopher Snowdon ( IEA Head of Lifestyle Economics), and Louis Houlbrooke (NZ Taxpayers Union).

A little something different for your Saturday! Your humble host has been long dragging his feet on releasing the next full (12+ hour long) episode of From Claremont to Claremont: An X-Men Podcast - however, today I'm dropping the segment where Jody Yerdon (@regalfan) and I discuss the final issue of the Chris Claremont run - X-Men (vol.2) #3 (December, 1991). In addition to covering the issue itself, we also include a bit of a "hook" in that Jody (along with the rest of the FCTC hosts) will share with us the "Soundtrack of Their Life" - It's a very fun conversation - and I hope you all enjoy, and maybe even share some of the songs that would be on your own playlists! For the handful of folks who even remember that FCTC was even a "thing", I apologize for taking forever to start releasing these! -- The First Two Episodes of From Claremont to Claremont: Episode 1 https://www.podbean.com/eu/pb-5rv7d-d8251c Episode 2 https://www.podbean.com/eu/pb-cmb5r-db1878 -- @acecomics / @cosmictmill / weirdcomicshistory@gmail.com chrisandreggie.podbean.com chrisisoninfiniteearths.com facebook.com/groups/90sxmen

WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros recently said “Since it came into force 13 years ago, the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control remains one of the world's most powerful tools for promoting public health,”. But is it? That's what a to studies just published on bmj.com try and investigate - one of which pulls together all the data we have on smoking rates, from 1970 to 2015, and then a quasi-experimental study which tries to model what the effect of the FCTC has had. Steven Hoffman, and Matthieu Poirier from the Global Strategy Lab at York University join us to explain what their research means, and why it's time to double down on our attempts to reduce smoking. "It is an amalgamation of all the harder forms of metal", declared Ian Konrad, guitarist for Byron Bay metallers From Crisis To Collapse, attempting to summarise the sound of their upcoming debut EP The Seventh Tree, "like hardcore, the old street punk style, definitely a big European death metal influence and a strong mix of thrash in there as well so it's easier to put under the banner of extreme metal".For From Crisis To Collapse the lyrical content of their music is just as important as the music itself, with vocalist Angus Carter revealing the underlying theme of the album is both deeply personal and socially reflective."With the music itself being uplifting and empowering there's a lot about people really stepping into that power in the 21st century", he said. "We live in a light age where there's a lot of cool things going on but there's also a whole lot of fucked up shit going on that's being exposed everywhere and also not being expressed elsewhere and sometimes it's hard to be a normal human being in this twisted world we live in so it's just about taking abreast of power and opening your eyes up from all the bullshit and listening to some heavy metal"!In the full interview we speak with three of the members of From Crisis To Collapse, Ian, Angus, and guitarist Chad Ellis, who talk us through their upcoming single and video for 'Slow Burn' which be released exclusively through HEAVY on Friday, February 15, the meaning behind the title of debut EP The Seventh Tree, what parameters they use to gauge the success of the EP, signing an International deal and what it means for the band, finding your musical identity and more.

Cigarette pricing is an important aspect of the tobacco industry because price is an effective way to reduce global smoking prevalence, according to the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC). Don Hedley, research analyst at Euromonitor International, explains that there is an ongoing argument between tobacco companies and the FCTC regarding cigarette pricing. While the FCTC says that lower prices will reduce smokers worldwide, tobacco companies say that higher prices will increase illicit trade in the global tobacco industry. Governments can also weigh in on the issue, as taxes on tobacco products generally benefit governments. Governments can also insist that manufacturers raise prices to generate more revenue.
