Entering album number ten, the all-encompassing sonic realm inhabited by Swedish musical enigma Avatar looked set to face the band's biggest personal hurdle to date. Very much a band who have proudly proclaimed their intention to maintain musical growth from day one, Avatar were forced to confront the critical and commercial success of the wildly entertaining album Dance Devil Dance. While most bands would welcome such success, it also forced Avatar to take stock of their music and career. This is a band who have steadfastly refused to become a parody of themselves, forsaking convention and expectation in pursuit of their own musical vision from where the sonic Garden Of Eden would forever bunker down. But the temptation would surely have been there. The temptation to possibly rehash whatever winning formula was at the core of Dance Devil Dance's success and squeeze that metaphorical cash cow while the milk was still fresh and creamy. So what did they do on their recently released follow-up, Don't Go In The Forest? They did exactly what long-term fans of the band and the band themselves would have expected and basically raised their middle fingers in the air in an act of defiance to the Metal Gods, who felt they had paved the way for Avatar to continue their journey unabated to the upper layers of the global music empire. While understandably retaining certain elements of what was created on Dance Devil Dance, Avatar more took the challenge of continuing their sonic evolution, exploring new and unchartered ideas personally. Maybe not outwardly, but certainly in the dark recesses of their brain, the band vowed to stick by their word. Stick by their mantra, their fans, but most importantly themselves. What they created was pure musical genius of unrestrained creativity that is perfectly represented by the intentionally sporadic and unexpected turn taken over the very first few songs on Don't Go In the Forest and only gets more disturbed from there.HEAVY was given the opportunity to journey into the creative mind of Avatar frontman and mastermind Johannes Eckerström and relished the chance to put some sense to the engulfing madness."The first couple of weeks is transpositional in the sense that you are a writer; you're a performer, we're a bunch of stuff, right?" he more stated than asked the question. "And release, as in putting something out, that word has a double meaning. Because release also means letting go. And as far as the writer in us goes, it's done. It's gone forever. It doesn't belong to us anymore, it belongs to everybody."We mention that it must be hard to emotionally let go of a body of work that has dominated their world for such a large period of time."There's a thing I do for myself...," Johannes measured, choosing his words carefully. "Ever since going back to the Black Waltz, because that album started an... I don't know... a quarter-life crisis kind of place in our lives, at least speaking for myself and John (Alfredsson, drummer). We had a powerful moment of that around that time, which, long story short, led to us really thinking, 'okay, this is the last album. Fuck it.' And that mindset of this is the last album, fuck it, I've tried to keep that ever since. I mean, I have some kind of confidence in that we will get to do another one (laughs), but it's always that question. If this were to be the last album, would I be okay with that? Did we achieve what we want to achieve here? If the world hates it, did we do enough to be at peace with that? And yes, I am. So, yeah, I have that little mental exercise or whatever you want to call it to deal with exactly that."In the full interview, Johannes spoke deeper about the musical side of Don't Go In The Forest, including the deliberately eclectic nature of the music and the way they approached the order of the songs on the album. We discussed the singles released and the thought process that goes into their selection, and the ways in which Avatar go against usual industry practices when it comes to everything about their music.Johannes explained the creative vision of Avatar and the importance of continual progress and experimentation within their music, their place in the sonic universe, creating an all-encompassing music experience for themselves and the listener and Avatar's perpetual quest for musical enlightenment. We explored the importance and meanings behind the album title and took a look inside the theatrical nature of the band and their music, discovering even more layers and complexities in Avatar and their quest. As if we needed to go down that rabbit hole…Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Interview by Kris PetersTweed Heads rock outfit The Whiskeys are a time bomb waiting to go off. After a number of years honing their skills, mainly by playing a bunch of live shows, the double-edged sword of Benny Whiskey (guitar, vocals)and Josh Larkin (drums) are now in the final stages of getting ready to unleash their debut EP Old Soul Young Blood on the world. The EP cycle began in February 2024 when The Whiskeys premiered their very first single, Hoedown, through HEAVY, and after a highly promising start, it seemed as though the Metal Gods had claimed yet another victim when more than 12 months passed without a follow-up single. But there was much more happening behind the scenes than the band's lack of releasing more music implied.Instead of rushing things out and hoping for interest, The Whiskeys elected to play the long game, plugging away on the live circuit and fine-tuning their songs so that when they finally come out on June 20, they are given the best possible chance of invading the earholes of as many people as possible. After being privy to an advance listen, HEAVY can assure you the wait has been more than worth it, with Lankin joining us earlier this week for a chat about the past, present and future of The Whiskeys."We recorded this close to two years ago," he admitted, "and we've been sitting on it. We released one track already - Hoedown - which we're really happy with. We've got good feedback from that, and we're just ready to do the EP now. As life gets in the way and things happen and time just goes pretty fast, so we were like, we better drop this thing (laughs). We just made a decision, and the time is now, next Friday."We asked Larkin to dive into the musical nature of the EP."We wanted to pay homage to some old school vibe," he smiled. "Like a bit of old soul, young blood, which is the name of the EP. We wanted to hark back to the 70s and the 60s, Hendrix, Bob Dylan, and just all the vibe that just gives modern rock its soul. We just tried to dig deep into that and bring all our influences, which comes from the modern punk rock and hardcore era. Then we just threw it in a pot and served it up (laughs)."In the full interview, Josh shared insights into the creative process of The Whiskeys music, noting the blend of musical influences and the challenges of balancing genres while maintaining their unique sound. We reviewed the EP's tracks one at a time, highlighting the energetic Hoedown, the blues-influenced Places, and the catchy Break Away, with Josh affirming their goal of creating an engaging atmosphere. We discussed the intro and outro pieces and their intended effect, as well as upcoming shows and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
New Wave of British Heavy Metal" deutlich vorangetrieben. By 1980, Judas Priest were ready to take on all the world! Fresh off their classic live album Unleashed In The East, Priest were ready to conquer America and the world with a more pop sound. Priest hit the charts with songs like Living After Midnight and Breaking The Law and offered new anthems to the teenage set with United and Metal Gods. But they stayed true to their heavy metal roots with songs like Rapid Fire and Steeler. Rob Halford shows off his chops and range on songs like The Rage as Ian Hill offers up a fun and memorable bass line. While we don't see much of the dueling solos between KK Downing and Glenn Tipton as would come to be familiar with on most of their 80s and latter day albums, they each show off their individual styles here while doing what's best for the songs. And the addition of Dave Holland on the drums solidified the classic 80s Priest lineup that would help them conquer the US and the world. They also forayed into making videos with the help of Julien Temple, much to the delight of Beavis & Butthead. This album helped propel Judas Priest and heavy metal onto a bigger stage and laid the foundation for the band's success in the 1980s and beyond. Interview by Kris PetersPhil Cambpell was, and always will be, primarily known for being one-third of the legendary metal outfit Motorhead. For more than 30 years Campbell stood side by side on the biggest stages in the world alongside his brother Lemmy, recording 16 albums and having a major role in Motorhead classics like Orgasmatron, Killed by Death, Going to Brazil, Eat the Rich, Stone Deaf in the USA, Rock 'n' Roll and more. While the music world at large mourned Lemmy's passing, those closest to him were left with a gaping chasm in their lives; a musical and personal void which would be impossible to replace. But Campbell was lucky in the respect he had his family to fall back on and not just emotionally.Within one year of Lemmy's passing, Campbell's three boys - Todd, Tyla and Dane - had rallied around their father, uniting to form their own band aptly named Phil Campbell & The Bastard Sons.Whether the band was started to fill the void or as a form of comfort or for any other reason in the Metal Gods playbook, they are still going strong almost ten years later and are about to make their maiden voyage as a band to Australia in September for a run of shows that promises to be one of the must-see live shows of 2025.Not only will The Bastard Sons be playing material from their three albums, but Campbell has also promised an equal portion of Motorhead tunes not seen or heard in this country since before 2015. But to make sure that wasn't just a vicious rumour, HEAVY tracked Phil down to make sure things were on track.Amongst the general chit-chat we asked Phil if he is comfortable playing Motorhead songs without Lemmy there with him, in particularly how it felt the first few times he performed after Lemmy left us."It's never going to be Motorhead, obviously, without Lem," he sighed, "but we give it a good shot. It'll be the only chance for especially younger Australians to have heard some of the Motorhead stuff with a band member playing them. We get a lot of youngsters come to our shows anyway if we're playing Motörhead stuff or our own stuff. We get older Motörhead fans bringing their young children to the shows. Basically they're just turning them on to good live music because there's so much crap about these days with autotuned voices and all that. We're the real deal, which is the way it should be."We nod in agreement before asking if having his boys by his side made things easier."I spent a lot of the boy's formative years away from them when I was so busy with Motörhead," he replied. "So it's great to be able to give something back, you know, and spend time with them and still go around the world in another kick-ass rock and roll band. You know, they deserve it. They're great players. The band is as tight as hell that we have now. So they deserve it. They deserve to tread the boards. It's a lot of fun, yeah. I enjoy it."In the full interview, Phil spoke more about what we can expect from the show and coming up with a list of Motorhead songs to appease the masses. He highlighted the difficulties in choosing songs from the vast Motörhead repertoire and expressed excitement about performing with his sons. He also underscored the significance of creativity in the songwriting for Phil Campbell & The Bastard Sons, encouraging experimentation without rigid constraints.Phil spoke about his love of rock n roll and how forming The Bastards came at the perfect time for him, introduced us to the new (ish) singer Joel Peters and explained how he fits in with plans moving forward, hinted at new music and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
US rock outfit Sleeping With Sirens have made their career on a combination of honesty, music and humour. The band rose to fame early on with their song If I'm James Dean, You're Audrey Hepburn, the lead single from their debut album With Ears to See and Eyes to Hear, which was released in 2010. Their second album, Let's Cheers to This, was released in 2011 and became a breakout for the band, thanks to the popular single If You Can't Hang, which was quickly certified Gold. But as consistently good as their music has been, Sleeping With Sirens have never been ones to take themselves too seriously. In an age where many are afraid to sneeze for fear of offending someone, Sleeping With Sirens have stayed true to their convictions and whimsical nature, delivering a succession of well received albums that have played a part in the position we currently find the band.Back in Australia for their second Good Things appearance at a festival that is only three years old. HEAVY first met the rockers at Good Things 2022, facing the daunting proposition of a virtual baptism of fire when we drew them first cab off the rank for what was our first ever backstage festival round of interviews. As it was again last Friday when the Metal Gods dished up Sleeping With Sirens for us to open the day with once more. Interview by Kris PetersMortality changed the landscape of Australian heavy metal when they burst onto the local scene back in 1992.Powered by an aggressive blending of thrash, death and groove metal, the band quickly established themselves as not just a musical force, but also a devastating and brutal live act that bludgeoned every aural sense possible. The world was theirs for the taking, with their 1997 album Structure gaining universal acclaim and paving the way for international dominance. But, unfortunately, just six months later Mortality went on hiatus, unsure if or when they would return to the fold. After a one-off sold-out show at the Empire Hotel, the band returned to the darkness once more, leaving a multitude of fans and lovers of metal in general demanding - but not necessarily receiving - more. While COVID ravaged the planet, it also provided the catalyst for a rebirth of Mortality and, as whispers slowly gave way to thunder, it became evident that the Metal Gods had intervened and renewed the spark in the Sydney metal outfit.2024 is the official return of Mortality, with the band set to play a leading role in Necrosonic Festival at Brisbane's Mansfield Tavern on August 31 alongside Psycroptic, Crypt, Lo!, Misery, Bulletbelt and more.HEAVY caught up with bass player Luke Ford to find out more. We start by asking if the nerves have kicked in for Necrosonic yet."We're ready," he shot back. "We've been rehearsing for close to a year, so it's good to get out of our room (laughs) and actually see people respond to what it is that we're doing. You never really know. We thought it was good. We thought we were doing well. But until you get in front of a crowd, and you've got all the usual elements that can impact it, you don't really know. Everyone's been doing music a long time and played in various bands over the years, so it was good when we did play last week to get the reaction that we were hoping for. Not really apprehensive, more just ready to destroy, to be honest."In the full interview, Luke talks more about Necrosonic Festival and the importance such gigs have on the Australian music scene, what bands he is looking forward to catching up with, the early days of Mortality, where their sound came from, their attitude towards self-promotion and getting their name out there, the changing landscape of music that saw them shift tides leading into the 1997 album Structure, their disbandment 6 months after that album and what led to the decision, the decision to reform Mortality and how it came about, writing new music, their first live show back last weekend, future plans and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
Heavy metal will never die. But every now and then, it needs a fresh injection of passion, purity, and pomp, just in case. Returning with a new album after seven years of studio silence, Dream Evil are obviously the right men for the job. They are ‘Metal Gods', and their reign continued with the release of this new album on July 26th, 2024, via Century Media Records. An album that we summed up as: The gods of anthemic heavy metal music. Dream Evil have been making people of all ages head bang for a few decades now and though it has been a while, they don't mess with the winning formula in the slightest with this new album, Metal Gods. Dream Evil are back, doing Dream Evil stuff, and sounding energised and happy. Metal Gods isn't going to set the world alight, but it's certainly some major kindling. In the summer of 1984, Metallica were not yet the Metal Gods and household names they are now. They were a band with one record under their belt (Kill Em All, hear UAWIL #138 for our review with The Hook Rocks Jay Scott), some experience playing bigger stages as an opening act and a small but loyal following. However, their US record company didn't have the money to pay for a new album so James, Kirk, Cliff and Lars traveled to Copenhagen and crashed in the studio as producer Fleming Rasmussen helped them pull together what would become their 2nd album, Ride The Lightning. As the album turns 40, we reminisce about how we came to know this metal classic, relive hearing them play (most) of the album live and debate if this is indeed ther best ever (Master Of Puppets is neck and neck according to us). We can really hear the progress on Ride The Lightning vs. the 1st album as the songs are tight with more complexity yet more melodic. And while the lyrics are very intelligent and clear, they deal with very heavy topics like nuclear war (Fight Fire With Fire), suicide (Fade To Black), ancient plagues (Creeping Death) and the horrors of war (For Whom The Bell Tolls). Cliff Burton's psychedelic wah-wah bass is not only unique but a driver of the melody that is inherent in these thrash classics. James Hetfield's powerful riffs are among the best he's ever recorded and provides that steady crunch against which Kirk Hammett can lay everything from frantic solos to trippy fills. This album remains #1 in the heart one of your hosts from the Metallica catalog - the other is on the fence. Interview by Kris PetersAfter the disappointment at having to postpone their debut Australian tour in 2023, US death metal outfit Jungle Rot have stuck true to their promise of making it out here as soon as possible with the news they managed to find suitable dates with German black metal pioneers Rotting Christ this May.While Rotting Christ will be celebrating 35 years of servitude to the Metal Gods, Jungle Rot will be savouring the opportunity to showcase their music to a new audience, with a plan to capture the attention and support of as many of their Australian fans as possible.Frontman Dave Matrise joined HEAVY recently to discuss the rescheduled tour and more. With the tour just two weeks away we start by asking if he has already packed and readied himself for the long trip Down Under."I'm gonna start tomorrow, actually," he smiled. "We're running down the list tomorrow, and we're gonna start doing it, and I'm gonna start mentally preparing myself. That's the hardest thing, mentally preparing myself for that flight (laughs)."Once here Jungle Rot have a brutal schedule, playing the whole run without a day off, which beckons the question does someone in their booking team dislike the band for some reason?"No, that's how we like it," he grinned. "We'd rather be playing every night, man. When you're on tour you wanna be playing every night because if you're not, you're going to spend money, so we'd rather try and make some money and work every night (laughs)."In the full interview, Dave discussed the band's upcoming tour in Australia, shared details about the tour schedule and his preparations for the shows and expressed his excitement for the band's first tour in Australia. The conversation also delved into the band's preference for playing shows every night and their determination to make the most of the tour.Matrise provided insights into the band's musical style, emphasizing their old-school death metal roots and the intense, raw energy of their live performances. The chat also revolved around Jungle Rot's music and career evolution, with a focus on their songwriting process and commitment to their sound.Additionally, they talked about their 11th studio album, A Call To Arms, and outlined their plans for future tours and new music, emphasizing their continual dedication to their craft.

The new album from Saxon, "Hell, Fire and Damnation" drops on January 19th, and frontman Biff Byford was nice enough to join me to discuss it, and lots more. "It's a monster title, isn't it?" Biff asked when I brought up the title. That it is! He told me what the title meant, it goes back a long way. "I don't know why we didn't use it before". He spoke about bringing back the 80s on some aspects of the album, even going back to the beginning of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. Biff talked about how fast this album came together and why they're releasing it to start the new year, as opposed to releasing it near the end of 2024. There's a reason they decided to get it out earlier, as Biff explained. "It all came together pretty quickly" as far as the album is concerned. Biff said, "The Metal Gods were looking down on us" He spoke about the process of writing and recording the album. This album is also mixed and produced by Andy Sneap, who has worked with the band several times. "It's everything, new music. It's lifeblood." is how he responded to the question of what new music means to Saxon. He said they're always on a quest to write the perfect song/album. He also told me about the song he did with Amon Amarth, "Saxons and Vikings". He talked about meeting the guys and becoming friends with them. "I do like the song, actually...it's a great song". The style of his voice along with Johan Hegg's makes for an interesting sound. Always fun talking with Biff, a great way to close out the year!

Interview by Kris PetersTim 'Ripper' Owens name and voice is legendary in the metal scene. Not only has he sung for Judas Priest and KK's Priest among others, but he has also forged a successful solo career and travelled around the world performing songs from bands that have played a large part in his career as a musician. One of those was Metal Gods, a band that paid tribute to Judas Priest, Black Sabbath and Dio in which Owens performed with ex AC/DC and Dio drummer Simon Wright. Metal Gods toured Australia for the first time late last year to rave reviews, leaving everyone who went to one of the shows in awe at the abundance of talent Owens possesses. Now, just six months later, Owens returns Down Under for two shows only - at the Crowbar in Sydney on May 11 and at The Bendigo Hotel in Melbourne on May 12.This time he will team up with members from Frankie's World Famous House Band, Harlott and Bad Moon Born to perform an even greater variety of songs from bands that have shaped metal music in general. He is treating these two shows as a tester of sorts towards booking a national tour next year, with the onus on Sydney and Melbourne proving there is a demand for more of his solo and own material.Owens joined HEAVY this morning from Brazil to tell us more. We start by asking if he has even unpacked after his last visit here not so long ago."I've unpacked and packed and unpacked and packed," he laughed. "It's just been non-stop. I'm doing this now from South America in Brazil. I was in England working on the new videos for KK's Priest, I flew home from England after doing a week there and was home one day then I flew here and then I'm going home for one day and flying there. This was last minute I decided to come there to Australia and we're gonna test the waters and do a couple of shows - it's like a test shows - and see if we can book a full tour in the future."Last time he was out here Owens was touring with Simon Wright, but this time around he is coming out by himself."It's just me playing my songs," he affirmed. "I called Joel to see if he could get some guys together and he was all for it. He got his brother and some friends. It's gonna be a blast. The setlist is great, we're doing some songs I haven't done in a while like Diamonds And Rust and we're doing something from my new solo EP, so it's a nice set list."In the full interview Ripper talks more about what songs to expect, the response to his latest album, finding the time to write new material, how these two shows will be different from what Australian audiences saw last time, assembling a band to play the songs and learning them in a short space of time, how he approaches singing songs from iconic bands, future touring plans and more.
Interview by Kris PetersOne of the most powerful and humbling things about being a part of the global metal family is the bonds that are forged through music. Not only the out and out friendships and life changing moments, but also the subtle nuances that often go unnoticed by all except the parties directly involved. It can be a smile, a glance, a guttural scream to the face, even a wayward elbow in the mosh pit but no matter the genesis of the act the outcome is always the same.We are one, we are many, and we are united in music as in life. While every band starts out this way to an extent the trivialities and triumphs of everyday life can often skew these ideals but while physical connections may fade no one can ever take the one thing away that matters to the core. The music.Which is why many people are often left shattered and disillusioned when their favourite bands retires or makes it to the inevitable next level that elevates them beyond the reach of early fans. Music is life and life is music. Not just for metalheads, but for every person who has been touched in some way by any form of music. That may explain moments of mass hysteria when one of The Beatles appeared at a window, or when Ozzy Osbourne peered over the top of his microphone and lovingly told everyone within earshot to fuck off.Perhaps one of the more magjical components of music is its universal acceptance and maniacal obsession. Many will still remember where they were when Lemmy died or the day Cliff Williams left this realm while others around him suffered barely a scratch. It's like you have lost one of your own and unfortunately that feeling never gets easier to bear.On a less global - but still highly relevant - scale, the Brisbane, Queensland and Australian music community will mourn as one when Brisbane masters of groove and metal Massic play their last show together at The Zoo in Brisbane on Friday, March 24. The fact the band are still active to plan their exit is testament to the courage and strength of vocalist Simon Russell-White whose well publicised heart failure a mere 18 months ago almost brought a premature ending to everything. The fact he got to reunite with his Massic brothers on stage and continue to play and record is a blessing from the Metal Gods themselves and now Massic get the chance to go out on their terms. At their choosing. At their own triumphant farewell.People unfamiliar with the band might be wondering what I am waffling on about, but if you have ever heard, seen, or been welcomed into the all encompassing arms which all five band members extend willingly then you know the score.HEAVY had the honour of sitting down with Simon and bass player Rashid for what could well be Massic's final interview and despite the sense of sorrow hanging in the air we still managed to throw together a decent yarn befitting of the indelible mark the Brisbane outfit has made on the music scene.Massic has also hand picked a stellar supporting cast for their farewell, with Flaming Wreckage, The Black Swamp and From Crisis To Collapse granted the priviilege of sharing the stage with them for the final time, with Simon admitting the process of asking which band to play on the night was difficult to say the least."We were really lucky in the fact that when we got together and decided we were going to do this, which bands did we want to play with us," Simon measured. "There was a fairly decent list in our heads at least, and, like I have said previously, there was no real order. We just had three bands that we wanted to ask first and they all said yes (laughs)."As long as the list of bands was in their heads, the actual number who would have gladly offered their services to play the show was probably double."There was a weighing up there of bands we had played with recently," Rashid offered. "We kind of wanted to reach back over the entire career of Massic and bands that we have played really memorable shows with and maybe haven't had a chance to play with over the last few months to a year.""The Black Swamp we actually did our first album launch with," Simon continued, "so they were a special mention. Flaming Wreckage we met in Sydney for our first - and ultimately only - East Coast tour. We played a couple of shows with them and those boys in general are incredible. From Crisis To Collapse, they're our guys. We played 36 Crazyfists with them and a lockdown show and formed bonds with too. There's other bands that I made a point of not mentioning because they know who they are, but were obvious choices but half of those guys are coming to the show anyway. We were lucky. The first three we wanted to ask, in no particular order, said yes otherwise it was going to be a case of let's go down the line. As Rashid said, some bands that we played recently with a lot we decided let's just catalogue out.""Like Si says, they will probably be in the crowd anyway,"Rashid took over, "which also means they will probably be on stage with us as well anyway (laughs)."In the full interview, Simon and Rashid run us through the plans for Friday's show, hint at some special surprises, talk about the bond they share with their fans and the power of music, recall some of their memorable moments with the band, discuss both albums Redshift and Cognisant and which they feel is better, the main reasons behind the decision to call it a day, regrets, joys, guest performers on the night, the emotions involved and how they plan to deal with them, unfinished business and more.On behalf of everyone who loves metal boys, thanks for enriching our lives musically and personally. It's been an honour, and a pleasure. There are surprisingly still a few tickets left for Friday nights show so if you haven't booked yourself in yet, grab your tickets now from www.oztix.com.au

After Simon Wright's career with AC/DC 'blows up', he goes on to sit behind the drum kit for even more rock 'n' roll heroes, including Ronnie James Dio, Rhino Bucket, Michael Schenker & UFO, John Norum of Europe, Geoff Tate's Queensryche and Metal Gods with Tim "Ripper" Owens, the ultimate ode to Dio & Judas Priest. Through divorce, death, and decades of drumming, Simon's musical journey continues.

Talk about problematic procrastination: only twenty-three years AFTER they were first eligible to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, JUDAS PRIEST will FINALLY have their day! Few bands in the history of metal have matched the long, prosperous, and influential career of JUDAS PRIEST, who have been collectively “screaming for vengeance” and “defending the faith” (as it were) for more than ½ a century, continuously honing, evolving, and intensifying their trailblazing, twin-guitar, “rapid fire” metal sound for over 50 years. For the sake of preventing our discussion from getting out of hand and turning into a 29.5-hour “megalathon” episode, we decided to break things up by decade, starting with the first full decade of the “Metal Gods”. When Judas Priest released their classic British Steel album in 1980, it paved the way for metal music to really hit the mainstream, and is one of the reasons the band were finally given the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame induction honor. “Living After Midnight” exemplifies the greatest thing about metal to metal fans: providing an escape from the norm for a fist-pumping few powerful minutes. Get into the story behind it in the new episode of the Behind The Song podcast. Watch the video episode and subscribe to the Behind The Song Youtube channel: https://bit.ly/2DBF4wJ

The Rock and Metal Profs: The History and Philosophy of Rock and Metal
In this episode of the Rock and Metal Profs, Court and Matt take a laser-focused look at Priest's return to metal form with "Painkiller", vocalist Rob Halford leaving the band, forming "FIGHT" and coming out as a gay man, and bandmates K.K., Glen, Ian and Scott soldiering on with Tim "Ripper" Owens as front man. The Ripper years were a difficult time for Priest (just as the nineties were a difficult time for metal bands in general). Ultimately, Halford returned to the fold, and Priest went on to make some of their best music in the 2000s, including their first true concept album. This 3rd and final episode on Judas Priest is a celebration of the Metal Gods! You Got Another Thing Comin'!
The Rock and Metal Profs: The History and Philosophy of Rock and Metal
The Rock and Metal Profs are back for season 2, and we've got a titanium and steel-plated trifecta in store for listeners -- JUDAS PRIEST! In this episode Judas Priest take their rightful place alongside Black Sabbath as founding members of the heavy metal genre. Priest were a foundational band in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM), but their early history and their path to success was anything but meteoric. Hailing from the blue-collar town of Birmingham in England, JP entered the music business with an extraordinary work ethic and an iron will to succeed. Enduring multiple line-up changes in the early 70s, the band produced an incredible catalog of albums that still hold up 50 years later. Court and Matt dig in and explore the early history of Priest in part 1 of 3 episodes on the Metal Gods!
The legends...the forefathers...The Metal Gods! This was a super hard list to come up with since there's so much awesomeness, but we give you our Top 5 songs from Judas Priest, in this episode!
Death comes in a lot more than threes as Jeff and Jennifer fondly remember David Bowie, Alan Rickman, Lemmy, Natalie Cole, the Mayor from Ghostbusters, and ... Celine Dion's husband. Bad impressions, fuzzy memories, and a few apologies lie within. Also: CANCER SUCKS!
